To Terry or Not to Terry?

Posted: March 29, 2005 @ 7:23 pm

“The Cowboys might keep an eye on recently-released Chris Terry, who started all eight games he played in last year with the Seahawks. The six-year veteran who has 80 career starts has been injury-prone, missing half the season in 2004 and 11 total games in the past two years.

But at 6-5, 295 and experience at right tackle, signing Terry could serve as a nice insurance policy if either Tucker, Vollers, or even Rogers doesn’t cut it on the right side.”
–Cowboys Still Looking to Upgrade at Right Tackle
dallascowboys.com, March 26, 2005

“…If he can stay out of trouble and play with intensity consistently, Terry is capable of developing into a Pro Bowl caliber player.”
– Scouts Inc. 2004 report on Chris Terry

“Terry was suspended for four games in 2003 because of a repeat violation of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. He was also fined an additional five game checks that year for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.”
–Len Pasquarelli, ESPN.com, March 19, 2005

“Athletic and steady with good footwork.”
– Pro Football Weekly 2004 Preview review of Terry

“Terry, who came to the Seahawks after being released by the Carolina Panthers in the wake of a misdemeanor charge of assaulting his wife and a subsequent missed court date, started 23 of the 25 games he played for Seattle.”

i think terry would be great and oh dont you worry im sure parcells could shape him up pretty well…and if he works out, great, cuz then rogers and the others could just get better from them right?

    rafael,

i had a question on players bein undrafted. how exactly does that work? i mean do they just come up and get to pick a team? im confused on all of that, could you help me out please? wasnt copper undrafted? hes not too bad. who else, that have been undrafted, have turned out to be great players?

    Ryan,

Players who are undrafted are free agents. Any team can sign them. The recruiting that goes on for these guys after the draft can get intense. Teams do offer some undrafted free agents decent bonuses to sign, but it often comes down to the player picking the team that he feels has the most need for him; these guys are undrafted. They just want to make the NFL — anywhere.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn’t darius had a franchise tag on him. SO it would cost a team like 2 first rounders to get him, dallas aint gonna pay that. Plus we don’t need another wood man, we got that in williams, we need a cover guy.

    your absolutely right

    Stewart on March 29th, 2005 9:53 pm

Not only do I want us to get someone that can cover but also someone that can bring the WOOD. I’m all for striking fear in anyone coming across the middle of the field.

Oh I agree someone who can mess up the opposing offensive players would be nice. But I would much rather have a guy that can stop that guy from making a catch or even intercept the pass, then a guy that can hit. Unless of course pretty much every game he hits the guys so hard they become injured and can no longer play. But thats not likely. So as I said, give me someone who can cover, if he can bring the wood, all the better. But it doesn’t matter how hard a guy can tackle if he can’t cover well enough to be near the guy for a tackle.

    Terry,
Give me a break!! What are the two things that parcells hates? Injuries, and drug abuse. Terry is out In fact he is never in. He and Carter should pass the ball around, they would be a great duo, until theyare expected to carry responceability. No Thanks!!!

    Rafael,

    Again, nice stuff!

I think at some point the Cowboys have to take a shot at one of these “loose cannons”. Risk versus reward, and Terry has huge upside. Parcells usually brings in his ex-players, and they seem to be somewhat of a support system to young players, but also to players who haven’t quite fit in on other teams, and Terry may benefit coming here. Kinda like the “ugly duckling”, where he never feels like he is part of anything, then he finds his “family” where he is excepted and then flourishes. Didn’t Parcells do it with Brian Cox?

It’s cut and paste. The amazing part is that its emanating from Valley
Ranch. I’m wondering how intense the debates are over him and which
side Jerry and Bill are on.

stewart my man i like the way you think.i think d.d can work with the cowboys D.B’s coach.but i dont think it would cost that much to get him in dallas.dont you guys think if the cowboys get a good D.E in the draft and not address the safety issue in the draft then they might belooking to bring in some veteran leadership into this secondary of ours come june 1????some one shine the light.

I say Chris Terry is a “no” to be in a Cowboy uniform. While it would be great for them to strike gold on a player that they could grab for less than market value, Parcells doesn’t go for these kind of troublesome players. The guy has too many problems and I don’t think they go away just by changing teams. 90% of the time…once a problem, always a problem.

    Jon on March 30th, 2005 12:43 pm

uh……….didn’t we cut our QB in training camp due to………..what neither Parcells or Jones would admit………..DRUGS………..didn’t that same guy abandon his team the Jets in the playoffs with Chad hurting? Imagine had he been our guy and we were in the playoffs……..and then here comes Vinny our saviour………

Bill and Jerry are not going to sign this guy. This aint 1985………Coaches and Owners were more responsible for the drug problem back then. Bill knew about LT and he sent him to numerous rehabs and help. With the leagues policy you cannot afford to have an athelete making millions of dollar that is abusing Alcohol or Drugs……….Drugs and Alcohol eventually catch up to a player………just like in society you get away with it for so long but eventually it bites you in the ass…….i am all for working with a guy and giving him second chances which they did with Carter………but to bring a guy in knowing he is abusing drugs………why bother……..

Now after they retire if they want to rent a minivan and haul a ton of marijuana across the Mexico Border………well that is a ok……..

Has anybody read Chris Mortensen’s article on ESPN today regarding Matt Jones? Does anyone out there think the Cowboys may draft him as a WR? Trade down from the #20 spot and grab him instead of some of the other highly touted WRs. After all, he did play for McNutt at Arkansas and we all know how tight he is with Jerry Jones.

  18. 18
    Jon on March 30th, 2005 3:07 pm

yeah i read it……..Jones a former QB maybe with pick 42 is he that good? Can play right away? We need an impact WR, he definitely has the size and speed. Cannot imagine to many corners taking the ball out of his hands, maybe he has that Randy Moss like ability in the End Zone, but he would have that word I hate…………POTENTIAL…….and Developing………and future Star……….

    Chandus on March 30th, 2005 3:16 pm

And Mike Mamula is a name we need to remember when a player shows great numbers in the combines and pro days, tape is the most important evidence to draft a player, and there’s none evidence whatsoever about Jones at wide, so drafting him before the 3rd round would be a coin toss, and considering that we don’t have a 3rd rounder if he’s there for the 4th rounder let’s take him, Key and Glenn could tutor him.

  20. 20
    Jon on March 30th, 2005 3:29 pm

There are several WR available in this draft that are an upgrade from our current 3rd guy………Morgan or whoever…….I would like an impact guy that can play right away…….and eventually replace key as the main go to guy……..Johnson and Glenn ain’t getting younger and showed wear and tear last year both finished the season on IR

  21. 21
    Chandus on March 30th, 2005 5:18 pm

Yes, and I’m up for it, the Cowboys don’t have a deep threat, but that’s not all, they also need a wide that can break a long gain out of a 10 yard pass, something neither Glenn nor Key have in them anymore.

  22. 22
    Jon on March 30th, 2005 5:59 pm

nope and they ain’t getting any faster…..the both fall in that possesion reciever category…..Glenn still had some gas in his tank speed wise last year……….but a fast WR that scares the opponents DBs is got to be in the cards…….

  23. 23
    Chadd on March 30th, 2005 6:12 pm

We do work a long deal contract W/ DD. He is a decent cover and a hard hitter. We leave darren alone. We get Williamson at #11 (just way to talented) We get Spears @ #20 (I truly believe he’ll be there) and we get..you guessed it Nugent with our 2nd round pick… :-)

  24. 24
    Jon on March 30th, 2005 6:26 pm

Chad………you do not pick a Kicker…….in the 2nd round…….geez this ain’t a soccer team…….you want a kicker……..Billy is fine………we need DE, DT, WR, CB, FS……..OT…..and you want a freakin kicker…….a KICKER…………a %$#(*#%(*& KICKER……..are you KIDDIN ME………we aint getting no KICKER………kickers are walk on soccer players or 7th rounders……….you never ever pay for a kicker………look at the Raiders………whats his name………the date rape guy………give me a break……you never pick a kicker before the 5th round…….i do not care what his name is or what school he played at………kickers………..kickers suck………..when i play madden or NCAA i fire my kickers and always go for TWO……….kickers…….

  25. 25
    Mike on March 30th, 2005 7:04 pm

Jon, while I don’t think we will be drafting a kicker with the 42nd pick. Kickers do not suck. When I play football video games, I go big time defense with a heck of a kicker. That way I am practiclly guarenteed 3 points every time my offense is on the field. Hey if they manage a touchdown, thats even better.

You can’t say someobody that coudl singlehandily score more points then may other offensive players on the team sucks. Again I am not disagreeing with you in the fact that kicker is the least of our worries. But they do not suck, especially not nugent. I know many people think nugent is a late second round early thrid round, and maybe he will. But he isn’t quite as good on the kickoffs as he is with the feidl goals and extra points, so maybe he will fall. Now its unlikely he would fall this far. But if by some chance he is still on the board when I 2 sixth round compensatory picks come up, then I don’t see any reason to pass on him. I know we have other areas to fill, but he is a mad kicker. Plus you also have to remember that Cundiff has not yet signed his tender with the boys for this year. SO as of right now we have no kicker.

But as someone else mentioned earlier I would rather have a kicker that was a pretty sure thing inside 40, that can also put at least averagly, thus opening another roster spot for a real player. But I see no reason to pass on nugent if we have pretty much filled most of our other holes. But again I doubt we will.

    Jon on March 30th, 2005 7:23 pm

video games……..hech i never punt in the video games………and i never go for a single extra point……..i got a play that gets me a deuce 66% of the time……..that is high enough for me to play the averages……

as kickers go Nugent may well be good…….as football players go……..kickers barely qualify…….we need some 300 lb………DEs and DTs and some 4.3 WRs…….and a FS…….another good cover CB……..and a linebacker or two………not to mention a tackle……….

Kickers only matter when you need em…….and then for that short moment they better make IT………and yes with Parity a good kicker could be a deciding factor……..I am sure the Patriots and Vinateri would disagree with my sentiments about Kickers……….personally I do not even like mentioning Kicker in the same sentence as DRAFT PICKS………….in High School our Football coach went over to the soccer coach……..told him to send over 5 of his best………..we tried em out til we found one Punter and one Kicker……..sometimes it was the same guy sometimes not………he got a letter in Football and never got dirty……….never got hit……..and yes scored more points than just about anybody else on the squad………

it hardly seems fair…………kickers are walk ons……free agents………or at best a late late round draft pick………..

Name all the kickers we have had since……….say Rafael Septian? My point exactly………who knows who they are ………line up kick the ball…….they only matter when they make it or miss it…….

    Scott Norwood anyone?

Got something to say?
