What is a DE Worth?

As Cowboys fans scan the wires for any news on Darren Howard and John Abraham, the New York and New Orleans papers ponder what they are each worth in trade. New York Post writer Dave Blezow suggests that Jets end John Abraham is probably worth a first rounder and a mid-round pick — if the Jets are lucky.

Meanwhile, the Saints are apparently keeping a close eye on the Eagles and the Ravens. Those teams are exchanging trade offers for Philadelphia’s franchised DT Corey Simon. The Ravens have given the Eagles a choice of a 2nd rounder this year and a 3rd rounder in 2006 or a 3rd this year and a 2nd rounder in 2006. The Eagles have not decided whether to accept the deal.

New Orleans, which is shopping DE Darren Howard, hopes a Simon deal would set a trade value for Howard. New Orleans sees Howard as a more valuable player than Simon, and would ask for at least as much as the Ravens are willing to give for the tackle. The Saints asked the Cowboys last month for MLB Dat Nguyen as part of a package for Howard, but the Cowboys declined. At the league meetings in Hawaii last month, Saints’ head coach Jim Haslett told the press that the Saints and Cowboys have yet to have “serious discussions” about Howard’s worth.
