Glenn Still in Limbo
Posted: April 27, 2005 @ 9:09 am
The odds of Aaron Glenn becoming a Cowboy are good, but don’t pencil him onto the depth chart just yet. The newly released CB is also drawing attention from the Jets, Patriots and Bucs. Glenn did tell the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram that the chance to play for Bill Parcells again has him leaning towards Dallas.
The Dallas Morning News reports that the Cowboys are doing their homework on free agent FS Brock Marion but are not inclined to offer him a deal at this time. The team prefers to give its young players first crack at filling the free safety spot.
Update: The Patriots no longer have interest in Glenn, having signed free agent CB and former Steeler Chad Scott yesterday. The Globe indicated that it was Glenn’s agent who initiated contact between Glenn and the team, but that he is almost certain to land in Dallas.
Done Deal: The Cowboys this afternoon signed Glenn to a two year contract for an undisclosed amount.

I think the Pats dropped out of the running for Glenn with the signing of Scott.
Dallas may also be looking at Hakim from Detroit as a slot/returner.
There’s been BS talk about Charles Rogers being traded to the Cowboys on some talk sites but I’m not buying it. I don’t think Dallas would take a chance on him at the moment.
Rafael,
An answer to a previous thread.
that is the “triple option” from the wishbone formation 1968 Emory Bellard (I think was his name) up until Bellard the T formation became the bone when one of the backs (usually the FB) went in motion. Bellard moved the FB foward permanantly and also really was the first guy to make the FB the biggest back.
I could have said a motion T formation but I did not think everyone would know what I meant so I simplfied it by saying wishbone but it was in fact the same thing albeit the name did not come till later.
Josh,
Fair enough. As I said, I was picking nits.
i still think the AG to dallas is a done deal. i think we get hakim too! if for nothing else as a third receiver/return specialist.
now aren’t we glad that dallas didn’t get howard or pryce.
i wonder what the limbo is about. we are not after marion. that might be a smoke screen
I don’t see us taking a shot at Marion. Signing Glenn would help but don’t forget about Quincy Morgan. Parcells has said that he has looked great and is working hard in the offseason. He also had that hamstring injury so we didn’t see the true Morgan last year. Also, I think we should give Keith Davis a shot at FS. The guys earns it every year with his exceptional play on specail teams. With our new pass rush, we dont need that great a FS back there, and Parcells knows that.
Glenn would be the ideal nickel corner. He can teach our young corners, with his experience. Lets also remember how many times the cowboys were in a nickle scheme last year. I also think that safety we drafted in the six round should provide enough competition with davis, scott, and dantzler. comments??
Lou - what does signing Glenn have to do with Morgan?
Lou–Doesn’t have a clue
DONE -

DallasCowboys.com website has just announced that Glenn has officially signed!!! GO COWBOYS!
Jack be nimble. Jack be quick.
Aaron went under the limbo stick.
Lets go Cowboys!!!
Oh by the way,I’m new and hello to everyone!Great website!
Does this mean Pete Hunter’s definitely gone? Or at least he’ll be playing safety if he stays? Why isn’t Glenn a candidate to move to FS?
GG - Glenn’s too short for FS.
And why the hurry to escort Hunter out? Let the best players stay on the roster. I’d not trade Hunter for anything less than a 4th round in 2006 — and no one will give us even a shiny nickle for him — so he should stay put.
Parcells closes another FA acquisition. Other GMs and Coaches must hate the loyalty he inspires in his players.
A whole heck of a lot of players sure seem to love to play for this guy!!!
i sure everyone has heard about players taking pay cuts to play for a winner, and a chance to win the super bowl. we are about to be that way; plus players wants to play for bp again. i have no problem in that.
I’m looking forward to seeing what they paid Glenn to play.
And I’m on the record with Carioca. Hunter isn’t going any where for now. Let him show what he has in training camp. If he’s one of the best keep him around, if he sucks, cut him.
On why Glenn doesn’t play FS, he’s too small (although as Spag’s rightly pointed out a guy named Thomas Evert played the position quite nicely).
This is shaping up as a very nice off season. A right tackle, a solid WR to go with what we have, and a FS to compete with the rook and I’ll call this one perfect.
the dallascowboys.com says it’s a done deal
no more limbo for AG. he is a dallas cowboy now
I think alot of the players can see an emerging winner and are eager to jump on the bandwagon….okay with me!!! GO COWBOYS!!!
This is gonna be one stout defense!
Now all we need is a good OT and lookout!
any predictions on our record this year? I’m gonna say 11-5…playoffs
Like Carioca said, Glenn’s too short for FS (and not “built like a brick wall” as Mickey also points out about Thomas Everett), and if anyone, myself included, is speculating about a CB switch to FS, they should first consider the player’s height (and build). A quick scan of the Cowboys roster reveals the only safety listed under six feet is Dantzler, which only fuels doubt about him at that position. The only CB’s listed at or above 6-0 is Henry at 6-1 and Hunter at 6-2 and we already know Henry’s being paid the CB money.
Hunter’s signed, so one can only hope Glenn’s professionalism rubs off on him and Pete buckles his chin strap and fights for a job at any position. I’m still sympathetic to his situation, I wouldn’t willingly want to move to a position lower on the pay scale whether it’s for the Cowboys or McDonald’s. That’s just business and CB’s are getting paid in this business. But if he responds well to this new adversity, it could pay big dividends later for both him and the Cowboys.
And as Mickey Spags also notes, despite the relative upside to signing Hakim, “Bring in Hakim, and Crayton immediately gets buried.” Meaning, I presume, that Hakim becomes the fourth wideout.
I don’t know if that would be the case automatically, but I do know that I don’t want to see either Crayton or Copper miss out on opportunities to develop. I like what little I’ve seen from each, Mick described it as their “promise”, and we need to know about that promise this year. Williams too. If Morgan rebounds nicely, the future Cowboys receiving corps could already be waiting in the wings. And if Rector’s game translates to the NFL, it could be one of the best units in the league.
So, if Hakim signing means diminished playing time for the team’s young receivers, I’d be disenchanted in it.
One of the things I’ve noticed that BP likes to do, is bring in quality veterans at every position who understand what he is all about. “Obviously” you say, but lets look at it more carefully. We had no leader in the secondary last year with no Woodson (Roy-Will is good, but not a leader out there, yet). Glenn will solve that problem even if he isn’t on the field all of the time. BP wants younger players to look up to a guy at their position who he thinks will be role models for them as hard workers and whatnot. At LB, BP seems content with Dat and Al as the leaders/role models there. On the line, BP added Fergusen to the list of veterans that includes Glover and Ellis. On the offense line, Rivera is the leader there (I know LA is one of the best ever at Guard, but like all of the other dominating lineman we had in the early 90s he has had some issues). Ritchie Anderson at RB (George was JJ (Jerry)’s idea). And then two positions where we really saw results. Look what Campbell’s presence has done for Witten. And at WR–you may say, “but we have no young guys who have really developed”. Correct, though Copper and Crayton may fill that role eventually. What I’m talking about however, is the “leader” of the WR’s before BP got his man KJ. That’s right, look what happened under Joey G: Bryant, a guy that looked like he could be great, did not develop good work habits and reacted violently at his coach (I know it was only a jersey, but he’s the fricken coach–he’s runnin the show). He’s now gone. Glenn just seems to follow BP around (BP didn’t want to draft Glenn, which was part of his reason for leaving the Patriots). Alright–I’m sure I forgot something, but there it is. I hope this helps some of y’all to understand the ‘Boys approach to free agency and whatnot (because im obviously and expert…heh…well, as expert as a 17 yr old kid living 2000 miles from his birthplace–home o the ‘Boys). I love my team–GO COWBOYS!!
Oh yea, the point i forgot to make was, at positions where we already have “leaders”, we won’t be bringin in any big name/older veteran free agents. This is of course all opinion, but that is why BP probably will try to bring in young guys like UFA’s instead of getting players like Marion and that guy people have been saying we should sign at RT (cant remember his name, maybe chris something??). Yep–cause when you look at places BP has been, and teams that have continued his philosophy (NE’s secondary for example, with Harrison they were able to win SB with a UFA starting CB and other young guys there), it has proven successful. And there’s my two cents.
Too short? How can he be too short for FS, but he’s still tall enough to play man-to-man at CB against every 6-4 wideout in the league and make the Pro Bowl twice?
The 4 best DBs will be on the field and heighth won’t be a factor. Roy at SS is the only sure thing. AG will be on the field. The question is whether he will be at FS or will he push Henry or Newman over there by beating them out? I don’t think he was signed to be a nickle back when he could have done that in the city he grew up in and is still worshipped in. No one down here in Houston is happy about the move because of the character concerns over Buchanon.
My money is still on FS. I don’t think the younger, faster guys will be moved.
dave
I’m just calling it as I see it on the Cowboys roster and for good measure, I checked on the Texans roster too. No FS under six feet there either (there was a SS). No one is saying it can’t be done, just pointing out the apparent prototypical size.
Hey I just wanted to ring in on this rumor that Dallas is sending Glover to Detroit for Charles Rogers. Now the initial whispers were that the deal was being discussed as Detroit was on the clock with the 10th overall selection. As I have pointed out on this site, teams have leap frogged Dallas the two previous years and grabbed players that the Boys were targeting. Last year Philly moved ahead of the Cowboys and drafted Shawn Andrews. The prior year the Jets used two 1st round selections to aquire the 3rd pick overall to select Dewayne Robertson. Both players Dallas was said to have strong interest in. I’d say there is truth to the rumor of trade talks with Detroit, and also the Merriman promise. But did Bill and Jerry have any reservations of making this move? …. probably not. Poker …. a good game of poker, that’s all it was. Why not give Detroit a trade offer that they have to consider? … as precious seconds tick off the clock. For every minute Detroit’s front office pondered trading with Dallas and talked with Dallas’ brain trust about a trade, meant that much less time to talk with other teams looking to leap frog in front of us. Even if other teams would trade up to jump over Dallas at 11, it would be to snatch the guy they knew the Boys were going to draft …. Merriman? Well that’s what they thought.
Dave
i think the name of the tackle you are talking about is chris terry. i live in seattle and he played for the seahawks last year. he does a good job but there some non football related stuff with him. i’m not completely sure of the details but i don’t think BP would bring him because he’s said he’s too old to coach hoodlums and thugs. i don’t know if terry falls into that category but he left carolina and seattle for a reason and they didn’t try to hard to make him stay.
So AG is officially a cowboy. the more depth the better. i thought they might try him at safety but who knows. i can’t wait for august i’ve got to go build my new roster in nfl 2k5 and start playing now.
i think that the hold up on AG signing with the cowboys was to let AG know that he is coming in as a FS. so he had to take some time to decide how bad he wanted to stay in texas with the cowboys and play with a winner. i still think that bill will bring in guys just to let them compete and let the best one play. he has alway been like that. that is how he make everyone earn their star so to speak. that is how you build a winner. with a combination of young studs with veterans trying to prove that they still have what it take.
i read earlier that people was afraid that jerry and bp might bump head and bill leaves the cowboys. i think that jerry learned his lessen with jimmy johnson. if you have a good thing; don’t go and trying to put his name on it and him trying to fix what isn’t broke. i think he knows he has a good thing and wants to keep it. letting bp draft the way he wanted (buying his own groceries, and cooking too) just lets me know that jerry wants bp to stick around for longer than just a couple of years. when is the last time that jerry didn’t pick a guy when he wanted. “NEVER” THAT SHOULD SAY SOMETHING. i say good job jj for letting bp do a good job. And as always: GO COWBOYS!!!!
First off ….welcome Andy J…
Dallas in o5 will be 11-5..
Why not put henry in the FS and put Glenn out on the island, where he is very comfortable??? thoughts
GLover for Rogers, scares me, we don’t have enough depth at tackle unless we are a true 3-4 defense.. It could be a steal, I say go for it, only if we are a 3-4 for good!
Isn’t the 4-3 a Cowboys tradition because it was devised by Tom Landry while the Giants defensive coordinator to defend against Jim Brown?
Hey, be careful–I’m not dave, I’m david. there’s two different people–but thanks for that.
remember–David with the capital D, and dave with the little d, are two completely different people.
but i forgive you, cause i’m pretty new to this website–but I love it already–now i just have to read it less and get back to my studying.
By the way–we definitely aren’t gettin any compensatory picks next year–not that it will matter too much, but I just can’t get the fact that this has been such a good offseason out of my head.
That sounds right Star–cause it was the base to the flex defense. Though I’m not sure it was that much more effective against Brown (but no body effectively stopped Brown).
Landry is credited with the 4-3 scheme.
I do not expect Dallas to leave the 4-3 entirely………that is why everybody is talking about the tweener……the guy that can play DE or OLB in a 3-4.
Somebody ealier had written a good thread about the 3-4 also. I had read some stuff about Parcells tweaking it as a chess match against Bill Walsh. Interesting Stuff.
the contract for glenn is 2 years for 2.76million, not bad for a perennial pro bowler….
i’ve ben a cowboys fan for many, many years…..I truely beleive this team as it is has grown leaps and bounds from where it was three months ago!In the NFL,a quarterback generally has 3 to 7 seconds(don’t bring up the 15 second thing from last year, aint gonna happen with this bunch)to finish the play. With Newman,Henry,Glenn covering,Williams Ware and Burnett blitzing, and Spears,Ellis,Glover putting pressure up the middle, look for more mistakes by the opposing team and alot more takeaways! Can’t wait!~ GO COWBOYS!!!
pretty cheap for a possible starter at CB……..and a definite contributor at Nickel………
Personally, I think Terrance Newman will be back this year with a vengance. He is big enough and strong enough to jam a WR in the first 5 yards. I also think he is a competitive guy that struggled with new rules and some confidence. Not to mention no help from anybody else in the secondary covering anybody anyway. Let’s call it the Sophomore Jinx………besides the addition of Henry and a Pro Bowl Veteran like Glenn………he gets better………or he is the Nickel Back.
On another note, anybody that read my earlier threads pre draft know I wanted a guy like Rolle on our team. For the amount of money we are paying Glenn…….and the 2nd Year Committee of guys………..and the Ware, Spears, Canty, Burnett, Ratliff, Beirault DRAFT………..I am more than happy with a Secondary newman, henry, williams, glenn……..and who ever at fs
http://www.dallascowboys.com
theres an interview with glenn you can listen to, please hurry up and get baseball done with so we can watch the beloved…
he did say he would play fs in the interview, but he also said hed play center if they needed him to, so…
From the cnnsi obit on Tom Landry:
“At 29, he became a player-coach in charge of the defense, a job now known as the defensive coordinator. He changed the front seven of the Umbrella from a 5-2 to a 4-3, essentially creating the middle linebacker position for Sam Huff. The system became such a success that Landry later had to devise the multiple offense to counter it. Both alignments remain standards at all levels of football, from Pee Wee to pros.”
Aaron Glenn is not moving to FS. It’s not like playing Madden were you can just plug in a corner at safety and he’s a baller. It just doesnt work like that. Besides, he’s tiny. He’s a great pickup for depth, and to play the nickel. The starting FS will either be Beriault, Davis, Dantzler, Finley, or a June 1st surprise cut.
Here is the breakdown and a very good read about the Glenn signing.
http://www.dallascowboys.com/news.cfm?id=85F13A28-C878-A11F-5A7519B87C2FA01A
Rogers for Glover, what a great smoke screen on the part ob BP and JJ to duke Detroit. Just think…man we are talking about Glover, one of the most productive tackles over the last ten years and not to mention the umteen probowls. With all the addtions to with free agents and drafts, the other o/c and quarerbacks should be loosing plenty of sleep.
AG WILL PROVE MORE VALUABLE AS A LEADER TO THE SECONDARY THAN JUST A NICKLE CORNER. HE MAY EVEN BE THE STARTER BECAUSE BP HAS ALWAYS SAID THAT THE BEST PLAYER WILL PLAY AND HE MIGHT EVEN BE A BETTER PLAYER AT THIS POINT THAN HENRY OR NEWMAN. I DONT SEE HIM COVERING THE SLOT RECIVER IN THE NICKLE PACKAGE ANYWAYS. I WOULD PUT HIM ON THE THE OUTSIDE WHERE HE HAS THE EXPERIENCE AND PUT NEWMAN ON THE QUICK SLOT RECIVER WHERE HE HAS A BETTER MATCH UP. HE GOT BEAT SO BAD LAST YEAR I THOUGHT BILL WAS GOING TO HAVE TO CALL SOCIAL SERVICES. YOU CAN’T PUT A PRICETAG ON LEADERSHIP AND THAT IS THE MAIN THING HE BRINGS TO THE TABLE.
THE TRADE FOR ROGERS WOULD BE COMPLETELY INSANE. YOU CANT TRADE A PROBOWL PLAYER FOR A GUY WHO HAS SHOWN ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING AT THE NFL LEVEL. YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT EVERYONE ONE IN THE NFL WAS A GREAT COLLEGE PLAYER AND MOST CANT SEEM TO MAKE THE ADJUSTMENT. I REALIZE THAT INJURIES PLAY A PART OF HIS LACK OF PRODUCTION BUT GREAT FOOTBALL PLAYERS MANAGE TO KEEP THEMSELVES OFF THE INJURED RESERVE LIST AND THAT IS WHERE HE HAS SPENT HIS NFL CAREER.
for all of you Newman lovers that are convinced he still should start reguardless of his inconsistancy at corner better wake-up just like Newman did today…My man Parcells is a no-nonsence type coach that just sent a message loud and clear to all corners but especially Terrance Newman……without saying a word…….The message is This year you will be challenged or ride the sideline…This is what I love because any person who’s game is suspect will now find out what his true capabilities are when you see a 11 year all-pro veteran ready to fill in and make it look easy….
No longer will I have to watch us get BURNTTTT…for an easy 7..Bill is a Master at getting the most out of his players….Glenn could have signed with 3 other teams probably for more money and start…..But where is he!!!!!!!Sorry guys but right now I’m like a kid in a candy store…
Hey did you guys here Bill’s clip on what he said about our Defense coordinator Mike Zimmer….He said there will be no debates on what we are going to do anymore on D……In essense its my way or start shopping for another team……Damn I Love this guy…and not because im from Jersey either….Well you guys know nobody can get players to believe in his way like Parcells…….
Ray,
Slow down, there is only one CB I have ever seen that could cover a WR for more than 10 seconds ….. Deion!! Besides Newman won’t have to do that anymore. Judging a corner without a pass rush is a lot like judging a RB with a bad offensive line, almost impossible to do.
Glover for a broken down college all-star at wr? Darrell’s right. That would be insane. It should never happen / could never happen. And unless our team owner is crazy, won’t ever happen. Honestly, if I thought that were possible, I’d be worried. Glover will be critical to our defensive performance. But its impossible, so there’s nothing to worry about.
Eric,
Im a little disappointed in some of my fellow cowboy comrads thinking Newman is a good corner….Yeah he’s still a baby in the game but whether you cover a guy for 10 seconds or 20 …When a QB picks on you all day not just in that game but other QB in diffrent games and you consistantly get beat….Im sorry E, the CB is the issue more than the line……It’s a pattern the offense see’s ….Dont get me wrong I really hope and believe Newman will be great…It’s just right now with Glenn watching over CB shoulders every move cats like Newman will find this fact out sooner rather then later………..
I just quickly glanced at the highlights over the last few hours I’ve missed and to quickly dismiss AG as the FS is shortsighted. Bill will put the best four DBs on the field even if that means Glenn is at FS. The only argument I’ve seen here for him not playing it something along the lines of being too short and something about questioning anyone who thinks differently has been playing too much Madden. First, I don’t own Madden or anything similar. It may have been responded to, but I still haven’t seen anyone respond to the fact tha AG was tall enough to be a pro bowl CB going against Marvin Harrison and others 2 years ago. At 5-8 or whatever he is, he was still a shut down corner meaning he could take care of his side of the field without always needing a safety helping him out. So, apparently, he plays a little taller than being credited for. I’m not saying he’ll definitely be the FS, but the guys you mentioned have had their shot and none have produced. Beriault gets a pass for being a rookie this year, but you’ll mainly see him on special teams unless he really comes from out of nowhere. None on the roster have proven they are better AG even though they’ve already played the position. By the way, Roy is tall and how did he do in coverage? He hasn’t exactly been the best guy in coverage when he had to play FS. Hell of a SS, but we can’t blame his heighth.
Again, AG didn’t leave his hometown to play the same nickle back he was offered with to stay home. I think there’s no way he beats out the young CBs. Possible, but I doubt it. There is no way this guy is just a backup and a nickel. He has too much left in the tank - at least for a year or two - to be an insurance policy.
Ray, in defense of the “Newman lovers out there”, can you tell us how often he was left out there by himself every week? Last year, he had zero help. You can’t go by last year for the same reason some of the others in this thread are annointing the same old guys to play FS. The poor play at safety and the fact we had my grandma playing at the other corner means he was left to one-on-one nearly every play so that the weaker players could double-team. I guarantee with help this year, Newman becomes better than the player he was in year 1.
I’m not trying to be the Aaron Glenn fan club, but I have yet to see a reasonable argument why he won’t play FS. Saying he’s too short is a week argument. He may have slowed down as a CB, but he would still be a quick-footed, fast FS and speed and the ability to get some air makes up for being short.
Unless he just loves BP so much he agreed to a backup role, I don’t see it shaking down that way.
Guys OUR SECONDARY SUCKED………last year…….so did our FRONT SEVEN.
The way I see it Henry, Glenn, Beirault are all great additions……..to the Secondary……….2nd Year guys……Frazier, Reeves, Thornton, Jones…….weed out the best of those 4………cut the worst. Hunter either shuts up and competes or finds himself out of football.
Terrence Newman will be better. If he ain’t Aaron Glenn will be the starting CB. I think you will see Aaron Glenn on the field a lot. The SS is the guy that is supposed to play closer to the line of scrimmage and give more run support. That guy is Roy Williams. Lets say we are in a nickel and we have Newman, Henry, Glenn, Williams and maybe Frazier…..or perhaps Hunter…….either way that ain’t a bad secondary. Henry and Glenn are better additions than the rookie committee we drafted last year. The three best CBs in this draft went by pick 11……..Pac Man, Rolle, and Rogers………we have good number of experienced and youth in the defensive backfield. I think it will markedly improved. It has been a long time since Zimmer has had anything of this quality to WORK WITH. We had the best pass defense with Woodson, Edwards, Williams and the Rookie Newman………Mario Edwards………who doesn’t think Henry and Glenn are upgrades. Adding Ware, Spears, Ferguson along with Burnett and who knows maybe Ratliff makes it too……..that could be sick. Just sick. Ware has potential to be a sackmaster in the NFL something we have not had since Charles Haley back went out………and the great rotation we all fondly remember. Personally I think paying Glenn less than 3 million for 2 years, getting Henry and the rest of the DBs on the team…….we got an improved secondary. If that was all we did I would be a bit pessimistic, but we got some weight up front too. Watch out no more McNabbed again………..not this year.
We got two pretty good corners……..albeit both of them struggled at times last year. Henry too. However was there any position in football that had as radical a rule change as the Defensive Backs faced last year? The Peyton Manning Whining RULE……….and they still lost to the Pats…….without Ty Law………..amazing……….maybe the NFL will make a few more rule changes for Peyton. Imagine had they done that for Dan Marino……….he would have been sick with the six hundred yard games he would have tossed.
Have any of you heard about this? Cowboys-forum.com is saying that Dallas is looking into trading Peter Hunter for 32 year old Ray Mickens from…you guessed it, the Jets. Does that make any sense to anyone?
Correction. That’s Cowboys Plus.com
I JUST HOPE THAT WE KEEP PETE HUNTER AND CONVINCE HIM THAT HE IS BETTER SUITED TO PLAY FREE SAFETY WHERE HE MIGHT POSSIBLY BE ONE OF THE BEST TO PLAY THE POSITION NEXT SEASON. CONSIDERING HIS SIZE AND SPEED AND HIS MODERATE COVERAGE SKILLS,HE HAS THE CHANCE TO BECOME GOOD,EVEN VERY GOOD AT THE FREE SAFETY SPOT. THEN WE WON’T HAVE TO WONDER WHO WE SHOULD GET OR PUT AT THAT SPOT.
