“You’re Not Winning Now…So You Suck”
Posted: April 30, 2005 @ 2:06 am
Bill Parcells admitted that fear of failure has driven him this offseason, but expressed satisfaction with the Cowboys organization, his coaching staff, and his draft. He was also guardedly optimistic about the progress he has noted in his veterans this offseason.
In a 35-minute press conference Friday afternoon, Parcells dropped subtle hints about rookies who interest him and revealed that the key veterans who were injured this past season are healed a full two months before training camp.
Perhaps the most revealing portion of the session was Parcells’ admission that it was last year’s failure that has driven him this offseason. “It’s a tremendous fear that I have, and I’ve always had it…I don’t care how many games you’ve won. You’re not winning now, so you suck…. I’ve always believed in this game that success is never final, but failure can be.”
Despite the poor performance in ‘04, Parcells believes the organization is stronger than at any time in his tenure. He cited uniformity in the scouting department, stating, “I couldn’t ask for anything better [from them]. After three years, they’re trying to bring me players I know I’ll like.” Parcells also cited satisfaction so far with his new coaches. He admitted that his distance from the college game made it harder for him to locate up-and-coming assistants, but again credited a scouting staff that now has the responsibility of locating promsing young coaches, in addition to players.
Parcells also credited Stephen and Jerry Jones for the job they accomplished in signing key free agents. He defended his practice of bringing in former players like Drew Bledsoe and Aaron Glenn, citing their professionalism. “You know what Aaron is going to do,” he said. “He’s going to be ready. He’s a pro. That’s why he’s a 5′8″ guy who’s played eight years.”
Parcells then gave a position by position assessment of his club. Here are some key excerpts from the rundown:
On the offensive line: Parcells cited the current depth the team lacked in years past. He praised Flozell Adams and Larry Allen for their conditioning, noting that Adams has lost a lot of weight and is “darn near ready to go.” Andre Gurode has been moved to center, where he will battle starters Al Johnson and Tyson Walter for playing time. Parcells made the move because Gurode no longer has a chance to start at right guard. This indicates optimism that the recently-signed Marco Rivera will be healthy for camp.
The move also suggests that second year men Stephen Peterman and Ben Noll could be ready to challenge for playing time. Though Parcells did not single out any linemen for praise, he did say he had some second year linemen who were much farther along in their development. He mentioned that Peterman looks healthy, after suffering multiple ligament tears in a knee last preseason.
The right tackle position will be the focus of the upcoming preseason, but Dallas does appear to have options. Parcells did note that he was intrigued by sixth round pick Rob Petitti, who in his words, “has got potential to play.”
At safety Parcells said it was too early to know if one of the youngsters could handle the job and that he would have a much better idea after camp closed on Sunday. He did mention that Dallas was prepared to work out a couple of veteran safeties before training camp, though he did not offer any names.
At running back Parcells cited backup running back as a key need entering the offseason and reiterated that Marion Barber was an important pickup for the club last weekend. Parcells dropped a second hint about a rookie, saying that undrafted free agent Tyson Thompson has a chance to stick, if he can get his mind around the pro game.
At receiver Terry Glenn is apparently healthy. Parcells said he was confident in the talent of his corps and attacked the notion that the Cowboys lacked speed. Glenn, Quincy Morgan and Terrence Copper were all players Parcells cited as being “fast enough.”
On the defensive front seven Parcells made it clear that Marcus Spears was not drafted to play tackle, even though he has the body to do so. Spears’ responsibilities as a rookie will be at end. His biggest task right now is losing weight. Parcells joked that he would not play “Chubby Checker” at end, and that Spears needs to get back to his college playing weight.
As for top pick Demarcus Ware, Parcells confirmed much of the conjecture on this board, that Ware will play some at end and some at outside linebacker. Ware in fact lined up as an OLB when Dallas practiced to 3-4 sets. Ware will also get some time as a 4-3 DE, but will be limited in this role, probably to sure passing downs. Parcells mentioned that he learned with Willie McGinest that 250 lb. players don’t hold up well playing every down against 300 lb. tackles.

i just heard on ESPN that OWENS is saying that if we dont get a contract, that it isnt outrageous to consider him not playing at all in 2005.
that would be nice now having to worry bout TO
I want his sorry but on the Field so when we BEAT they Eagles they don’t have any excuses!!!!!
Success for so long and no Super Bowls……..is the Dynasty that never was about to crumble…………also TO has only said in public what everybody in the locker room was thinking……….what happened to McNabb in the 4th Quarter? He should not air it in the media…….but hey it is the truth. Congratulations Philly you finally got yourself the WR you were looking for…………..Holdouts………Media Outburst………Flamboyant Celebrations……….yep………what a great pickup!!!!
McNabb taking a few shots back at Owens…..
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/3541206
Moss and Owens, the clowns of the NFL.
Does anyone forsee issues at the right cornerback spot… Henry got the big contract, but Glenn has a lot of gas in his tank. With Parcell’s rule of playing the best player, it is not out of the question that Glenn may take over Henry’s spot. Either way, this is a great problem to have after last season!
I think we will have a good enough team to make some noise with or without Owens scoring against us. If he wants to hold out…. let the idiot do so….it’s none of our business.
Be thankfull we have Parcells and Keyshawn (with the big mouth…yeah right?) and not that selfish moron. Bring me 1 team player and not 5 selfish idiots such as that one.
Plan and simple Owens is a cancer on and off the field!
i think we could win 10 games tops this year but the future is alot like 1990-1991 and so on with the talent we have now on offense and the youngsters and talent on defense i still think we are a good 06 draft from being super bowl contendors, hope im wrong and we are ready now but im trying to be realistic here. if we go 10-6 make the wild card would that be a good season to you guys???
As far as TO is concerned,he called his teamates”a bunch of babies” in college, caused a major rukus in San Francisco levelling charges that Jeff Garcia was gay and useless, gave Baltimore the cold shoulder, and now this….All I can say is GO TO!!!! Ruin THEIR teams!!! lol…Seriously,he is a cancer….
I was having a beer yesterday at a Cowboys bar in Virginia Beach. The owner an I both agreed we thought we were headed for a 10 win season. Maybe a couple more hopefully not a couple less.
Good ananolgy of the 90-91 team. We got better faster than people expected us too. Also who really knew just how good Emmit, Aikman, Irvin and the rest of our team was. Aikman went from spending all his time on back his rookie season to winning the Super Bowl pretty quick.
One thing about next year. We have a coach that will prepare his team for every game. We have players that are competitive. I think Bledsoe has something to prove, after all he could easily be the 3 Super Bowl victor instead of Brady. I think our team is going to come together late in the year with the rookies no longer being rookies…….and that could be just the right time.
I like our new depth on Defense……..Parcells mentioned Reeves and Hunter as possible FS players on Passing downs. He is going to have our best coverage guys on the field when he knows the ball is in the air. Glen is an immediate starter at Nickel or maybe corner……..who knows…….let Newman and Henry earn their jobs like everybody ELSE. Plenty of competition along the D Line and Linebackers……….that is only going to make this team more competitive.
Watch out NFC East……..The Boys are BACk……….the boys are back!!!!
Kerry,
Plain and simple Terrell Owens was THE best player on the field on Super Bowl Sunday. Now I don’t nessesarily agree with some of his antics, but the guy busted his butt just to get on the field, and then outplayed everyone, including Mr. McNabb, who hurt the Eagles more than he helped them.
… I’ll take him on my team any day.
Don’t get me wrong,TO has loads of talent…..it’s just that he always detroys a team from the inside.Let’s see how many times he’s open as opposed to someone else and gets the ball.He just shot himself in the foot. And when he doesn’t get the ball, then he’ll start the San Fran stuff again…..As a Cowboys fan,it’ll be fun to watch that situation explode!
I hear what you’re saying. Owens is the most talented offensive player in the league including Manning.
But I want to actually like the players on my favorite team. I hate Owens.
He represents everything that I hate about rich celebrities — notice that I didn’t say football player. To me, he isn’t a football player. Owens cares about Owens. I would be pissed if we landed Owens. Its better to win without him.
Philly can win without him too.
Come on now, Im no T.O. fan either, but you cant say he’s not a football player. He’s one of the top 4-5 players in the league. Yeah he alienates his teammates and shows off but you cant deny his production. And who cares what he does on the field, you act like we never had #21 actin a fool out there for us, and we loved it. The only thing that bothers me about T.O. is the off the field stuff, like bringing up Ray Lewis’s court case, and the comments he made about Jeff Garcia, and Donovan McNabb. As far as what goes on in between the white lines, I’d take him in a second.
Good point Carl,it’s the off field comments that will ultimately do him in.I mean he just basically stabbed his quarterback in the back in public,NOT a smart move….
Who care about terrell owens? I know things are slow right now but this is a place to discuss all things Cowboys, not that punk.
I bet he wouldnt be a punk with a star on his helmet.
The “only thing” that bothers you? Of course that’s what bothers you — its the reason that makes him a jackass.
Who wants a player that denigrates his teammates to the media?
Or what about when he went on 60 Minutes crying about his financial problems. Remember the comment about “people don’t know what goes on behind the scenes…sob, sob, sob.”
I can sympathize of course. After all, he’s trying to get by on only $50 million over 7 years.
Should we also forget that this time last year he was begging an arbitrator to let him have that contract when it looked like he would be playing for Baltimore.
And besides, I acknowledged his ability. I said he is the most talented offensive player in the league. What else can I say about that. I just wouldn’t want that prim donna on my team.
I don’t remember Deon ever crying about not having enough for his family or going on the air about how awful Aikman was. Nothing should surprise us about TO. He did the same thing in SF. And now he’s doing it in Philly. He’s more trouble than he’s worth and that’s saying a lot because his offense makes him worth a lot.
I agree. Let’s talk Cowboys. I got a bit carried away.
T.O. is a good player, and Moss is a good player, but they are NOT great players! The GREAT players know when to shut up and play. Favre, Montana, Emmitt, Payton, Rice, Barry Sanders, Staubach, Bradshaw……… Great players not only have the talent, but they also are smart enough and respect the game enough to know not to mouth off, unless it is needed for the betterment of the TEAM.
I really like our chances this year to make the play-offs. 10-6 is not out of the question, especially when you see how much better this team looks on paper compared to 2003, when the defense took us there! Other than Coakley, Woodson’s absence will be felt. The personnel is there, with this draft, but who will fill Woodson’s big shoes as the QB of the defense? I sure hope Roy Williams can.
I love the turmoil on the OTHER NFC East teams, cuz we seem so focused this year!BP doesn’t like to lose and it shows by his shoring up the team to win now.I agree that you must develope younger talent but it’s all about winning. And the bunch he’s assembling gives us the power to do that!Washington seems lost in space,NY has basically a rookie QB(jury still out) and internal issues, and Philly has numerous holdouts and lots of in-fighting.My point is that the Cowboys are the only team in the division that seem focused on the task at hand and have a chip on their shoulder(out for blood) so lookout NFC! Da Boy’s are in town!
if to was on the boys team and doing what hes doing now hed be a punk. emmitt went through a similar thing back in i think 93, remember. we are deffinetely heading in the right direction i hope bill finishes out his contract and maybe stay on for a year or 2 and keep helping out…
Deion never put down Aikman, but we never saw Aikman choking like McNabb did either. We did see Troy, Emmitt, and Michael put all the responsibility on themselves after loosing to San Fran in the NFC Championship, only to refocus themselves and come into training camp the next year in tip top shape. They publicly called out their teamates on that Cowboys’ squad, but were the first ones to put themselves into that bowl too, and the first ones to take action in correcting it. Like I have stated, I am not defending T.O.’s antics, BUT with his physical condition and all the things he had to do to prepare for the Super Bowl, he sure looked more prepared than his QB.
i know this is a cowboys site, and i am a true cowboys fans. but i have to say that i hate TO also. i would not piss on him if he was to catch on fire!
TO is a cancer plain and simple, i would never want soemone like that to even put a star on his helmet he doesnt deserve that kinda privliage. let him tear apart philly it works for us in the end.thats good team unity they have there……..jackasses! but until that happens i hope roy knocks him out of another couple of months this season. THE D IS BACK IN DALLAS
I heard Michael Irvin say on ESPN about the TO McNabb incident during the season……not the Super Bowl……..remember this is not his first attack on McNabb the other was before a live audience.
Irvin said no matter what Troy Aikman did, he never said anything negative to Troy. Did he ask for the ball more……..sure…….but he would never say anything negative to the QB……..to Troy or any QB……he said the ego of a QB is fragile……..you never mess with it. Amazing Irvin certainly had a flair for the dramatic celebration himself…….but when it came to being a Teammate TO can’t carry his Jock Strap!!!!
TO and for that matter Randy Moss are both Great Football players. No doubt about it. But at some point the player showing no regard for his teammate or his coach is not to be tolerated. Does anybody see TO like celebrations out of Parcells coached guys? Cell phone and sharpies in the end Zone?
Bill Parcells……….vs. Mike Tice and Andy Reid……….Bill Hands down……that stuff is as much a coaching issue as it is the player.
…. ahhh Keyshawn Johnson??
People (other team’s fans) hated Michael Irvin, and in some ways he was the first coming of Owens. Trust me!! …. I mean trust me when I tell you that if Troy had lost the Boys their first Super Bowl by throwing 3 INTs, and missing wide opened recievers like McNabb did …. we would have heard about it. Yes from the “Playmaker” himself!! Donavan wasn’t prepared, plain and simple. He missed Westbrook wide open in the flat twice, when Westbrook had only green in front of him. Now if McNabb would have studied the tape of New England’s AFC Championship game against Pittsburgh, he would have seen that they rolled their defense a couple times there too. The ROOKIE QB Rothelsberger had a habit of using only one side of the field, but for McNabb to miss it twice is inexcusable! Again, I am not defending Owens, but he came in ready to play. If it were T.O., Michael, or any of you … if you busted your behind to not only be ready to play after a major injury, but be the best player on the field, and you give it your all and leave nothing on the field, but loose because your QB can’t run a two minute drill!!
… how would you feel?
Michael Irvin certainly had his moments. But most of em occurred with a naked stripper and little vial with white powder in it. In the offseason.
On the field, in the locker room, and when you needed help Michael Irvin was the heart and Soul of the Dallas Cowboys. Ask Troy or Emmit? You hear over and over again how much he motivated the team, and how tough he was. You also saw the collective wind fall from their sails when he went down in Philly.
Jimmy Johnson said there was a fight in the locker room between two teammates. He heard Michael Irvin was involved with a Defensive lineman this is the Miami Hurricane years. He goes in there figuring he is going to have to save Michael. It was the other way around. Irvin was one tough customer………and despite a few antics mostly off the field………He was one heck of a teamate. He was definitely a competitor and a playmaker.
He carried that over on the playing field. You know you make a good point, about TO spouting off after they LOST. Luckily for guys like Emmit, Irvin, and Troy………they won a lot more than they LOST.
Jon,
Like I said, I am not defending Owens. Although he is a lot like our Michael Irvin. There is nothing more inspirational than what T.O. did last Febuary!! Alah Willis Reed and the Knicks!! …… Let’s think about it in real life terms. O.K. you are sick as a dog, but a huge $$$$ business deal that you dreamed about is at your door step. No one even expects you to to be ready. Yet although being sick, you prepare and prepare, in between the runs to the bathroom and resting, you research and study, you practice your closing to nail the deal. When you go to work you shine, you fought through the pain and exaust to be even better prepared than your coworkers. But one of your coworkers is so unprepared and looks so confused that your perspective buyer passes on the deal. How would you feel? …… Owens did everything asked of him as a football player!! ….. If you ask me he is kind of like that friend that we all have. The one that talks a lot and when he is upset at you, he will speak his mind and insult you, sometimes in a condisending way. But heck if you ever need anything he is the first person to get up to help you, not just offer, but do it. He delivered on Super Bowl Sunday, and McNabb didn’t … just that simple.
How dare we even discuss this idot TO and give him air time. The guy is a cancer palin and simple. Let’s focus and stay on point. Cowboys, Cowboys and nothing but Cowboys. I like the direction we are heading…and that seems to be supebowl bound. Smile.
darrell, very good point we are gonna be so damn competitive this season.lets go Dallas
I agree with Darrell. Enough about T.O. Let’s not forget what he did on OUR 50 yard line a few years ago. I just wish George Teague did a better job of laying him out, but Roy Williams finished the job last year. However, as bad as McNabb played, I don’t think a healthy T.O. would have made any difference. Philly is still 0-2 in the Super Bowl, and I like our future chance of getting #6 soon, if our defense is as good as it looks on paper.
Eric,
I have pointed out what a stud TO was on the field. I do not argue what he did was short of miraculous. He is a vegetarian, does not drink, does not do drugs, and is as physical a specimen as there is in any sport at any position.
However, he is a DUD in front of a camera. Would I take him in a Cowboys uniform……..SURE……….cuz i would love to see Bill Parcells straighten him OUT………..you would not see sharpies and pompoms……no matter how many TDs TO had……..that is a matter for the coach to handle and neither Andy Reid or Steve Mariucci handled it very well. What he pointed out about McNabb was true, however he should never air his laundry in public. He signs a contract and then wants a redo after one year and hires Rosenhaus………who ruined the career or Rhett in TB. TO has BO, and he stinks up team chemistry. Eagles will not give him a raise, they will trade him before they do that.
There is no question about Moss or TO on the Field. But I would say their coaches……..and Norv Tuner will not be an exception have failed to handle these gifted atheletes and turn them into gifted teammates. That is the difference between an Andy Reid, Norv Turner, Mike Tice………and an old school guy like Bill Parcells.
“Hey Ware, I hate orange gatorade. So all year long you bring me a cup of nice ice cold Water. You got it Rook?” BP to his new Rookie…….who will not be a primadonna!!!!
The sign of a true champion is not how he acts in victory, but how he also acts in defeat. Everything was fine in Philly til they lost the Super Bowl, and now? Enuff Said!!!!
Jon,
Speaking of celebrations, we had our own. I thought it was rediculous that the NFL instituded the “Emmitt” rule, when guys up in Green Bay could do jump into the crowd without any circumstances. I mean celebrating TDs was fine until the NFL decided to encourage some and penalize others. Joe Horn and others have been flat out stupid, but come on now T.O. is creative. You can’t tell me that you didn’t crack a smile when he was doing that Ray Lewis thing. Remember we had Deion doing his dance, Emmitt taking off his helmet, Alvin spiking the ball in between the goal posts, and Michael singaling first down … and I always felt if other teams didn’t like it, shut your mouths, and stop them then. Admittedly, T.O. takes it to another level, the NFL shouldn’t allow a player to disrespect a team or an opposing player, but celebrations we had ours and enjoyed watching Alvin spike the ball through the goal post and Deion do his funky lil’ dance. …. But getting back to that “Emmitt” rule, that is simply jealousy that the rest of the league seems to have when it comes to the Cowboys. Like I said the Packers did the “Lambeau leap”, and the Rams would do their huddle dance, but Emmitt couldn’t take off his helmet!! Just like Lyn Swan is a Hall of Famer and Irvin has to wait another year!! (go look at their stats, or how Michael’s compares to other Hall of Fame WRs) Teams have actually appealled to the NFL to take away the Thanksgiving game away from the Boys. There is nothing more American than the Dallas Cowboys and turkey dinner on Thanksgiving.
In most of his TDs Emmit was congratulated by the likes of Troy, Moose, Novacek and the lineman………i do remember an occassional spike……but Emmit preferred to collect the football and save it. He was pretty tame compared to the Icky Shuffle or many others. Yes I remember him removing his helmet after a particular touchdown, but all in all he was not very flamboyant. After all he was getting there over 20 times a season. He acted like he had been there……..and he would be there again.
Irvin was famous for the first down, and I do remember Alvin dunking a football a few times. Back in the day we had Butch Johnson and his six shooters……..but that is before your time.
TO doing Ray Rays dance? All I can say is watch out TO? I would not want to irritate Ray. I think players ought to act like they been there and they will be again. Perhaps Barry Sanders did it best…….just handed the ball to the ref. I do not think fans pay to see touchdown celebrations…..at least i do not. Touchdowns sure, but let a Joe Horn pull a cell phone on a Bill Parcells coached team and see what happens. TO would not be dancing the Ray Lewis dirty bird on a Parcells coached team. Ain’t going to happen. It shows a lack of discipline and respect, and you really think Andy Reid Likes it? It shows he has little control over TO. Perhaps that is why he is only been to one Super and lost 3 NFC championships.
Success is often envied. Irvin might have been snubbed for his off field issues. They let LT in, Irvin gets in too. Probably this year.
Can we get out of the past!!!! Lets move on to what’s going on for next season. Is there a Gurode trade in the future now that Parcells has moved him over to center… what’s the word on the minicamp that concludes today…Emmitt, Aikman, and Irvin are gone, lets embrace who we have now!
Anybody know much about Reggie Harrel…..a rookie FA WR.
Rated as a top 10 reciever by some, and was a track and football star at TCU. I never heard of the guy, but do not get to see a lot of texas football. Anyway he is 6′3″ WR………we do not have a whole lot of height at WR.
Our defense is just stacked this year. We have so much more depth than we have been use to, it looks like this year could be a great year for dallas fans everywhere. We have gotten better at multiple positions. Im wondering why though BP payed Anthony Henry so much money to come here, anyone else thinks thats kind of a desperate move? Don’t get me wrong, he’s an upgrade at the right corner spot but I don’t get why so much was spent on him.
Jon,
I couldn’t disagree with you more. Celebrating is a show of emotion, and Barry didn’t do it best. Football is an emotional game, and letting it out at your highest point is a good thing. I love the Lambeau Leap!! In fact I love seeing clips of John Elway and Bret Favre because they wore their emotions on their sleeves. What I don’t like is singling out a few players for the way they show their emotions. …. Now, again, players like Gastineau and Owens go to far. I don’t like the orchestrated celebrations, but living in the moment with your teammates and your fans … well that’s what it is all about!!
Paul,
Henry is supposedly a good cover corner who can also tackle and help out in run support. He had 10 picks his rookie year as a Nickle Back but not as many picks at the starting CB position. Looks like a good character guy, and did not have the media attention of Smoot, Rolle, Woodson, and Law……..but appears to be in that class on the football field. They also had the coach from the Browns come over for the secondary, that probably had more to do with it than anybody. Coach says look at this kid Henry already knows character and work ethic.
Eric,
If the NFL did not do something about the celebrations……..they would never stop. In my opinion the lambeau leap is fine………but the pom poms……..the sharpies……..the cell phones……….it is a gimmick……..these guys are just showing off for the Camera…….not celebrating with their teammates over the joy of catching a touchdown……..I mean it is one thing to sack a guy and then have a chop or motion that appeals to the crowd……..it is something else to dance around like you are in an MTV video………….i am all for celbrating with fans and fellow teammates. In fact, the offensive lineman ought to be the guys the RB goes over and thanks on every touchdown………
Football is played with emotion, and it comes out on the field. If we let the end zones celebrations go on there will be no end to the antics………
Like I said……..Act like you been there before, and you will be there again!!!!
paul,
henry is a good not pro bowl but good corner, hes young fast, and big. the going rate for corners isnt cheap thats why he received that big a sb from the cowboys.
ronnie.
i doubt they are gonna trade gurode, just because he moved positions doesnt mean anything, he has experience at center and rg spot is taken by rivera, so instead of letting gurode know he has no chance of winning a spot they moved him to center where he can compete for a starting position.
Jon,
Right on! The sharpies and the pom poms are silly, and selfish. Just as Gastineau’s 2 minute sack dance, just selfish, a display besides his teammates, not with them. ….. But Barry Sanders lack of emotion .. I’ll say it like this … There was a guy who played here. When his team was loosing, or you just felt the moment swinging to the opponents, Emmitt Smith’s heart shined … like the sun on a hot summer’s day. I could remember plenty of times were #22 went back to the huddle after a big run screaming at his teammates. …. You could feel the emotion lifting his teammates. The little guy who “would never make it in the NFL” carried the Dallas Cowboys many times with his heart and conviction. In his finest hours, I loved to see him celebrate!! … couldn’t imagine him any other way!! … never should he have just handed the ball to the ref …
celebration is fine as long as its not someone signing autographs and stupid stuff like that. back in the 80’s the icky shuffle, dumb but cool. falcons dance few years ago dumb but ok, broncos salute ok, what im trying to say is this is a game, do good people celebrate as long as its not out of control fine by me. i hope we get alot of chances to do the same this year…
Eric,
Emmit always acted with Class. He always acted like I described, he had been there before and he would be there again. Yes Emmit often fired up his teammates as did Michael Irvin. I am not against emotion, just selfish celebrations to grab another Sportscenter Highlights………..
