Safety Watch

If actions speak louder than words, the Cowboys will sign a veteran free safety at some point before the season starts, no matter how good they might feel about rookie draftee Justin Beriault. The team hosted former Falcons FS Corey Hall this past week, but declined to offer him a contract. The also snuck in former Seahawks FS Damien Robinson for a look-see, but also declined to offer him a deal.
The Cowboys may be keeping an eye on Tennessee, where FS Lance Shulters could be a June 1st salary cap cut. Shulters will meet with Titans GM Floyd Reese this week to discuss his high cap number and his role on the team.

We’re hearing now that Pete Hunter has changed his mind and decided to play at FS. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for that. I think he could do well at the position. If it’s true, that should solve the Cowboys problem of searching for a replacement, at least, for now. We’ll wait for the announcement.
Rob, where did you hear that?
Interesting news Rob,he certainly has the speed and size and I understand he played it in college. Our draft pick Justin B. is more of a run support guy and we need a center fielder back there,I hope Hunter makes the switch and that we also keep our ear to the ground for other upgrades at that position, which I think we will since they are looking at free agent FS already.Good info…thanks Rob!
I would rather have Pete Hunter playing at FS than a vet. If we get schulters, we will be burning cap room for a possible OT. And if Hunter does start he will be very good(you can quote me on that), he has the size(added some weight over the offseason) , the speed, coverage skills(as he was a CB), and the most important thing for a FS is he has the natural instinct. If he decides to play FS this Defence will be set and we should look a guy like Turley to help the O-line. Also you guys have to stop complaining about WR, we aren’t that weak there. We have speed, vets, and a crazy guy in Keyshawn who is underated for his balls to go up the gut and make tough catches.
rob2 - Interesting and reasonable news. Seems to be Hunter’s best likelyhood of getting on the field and increasing his future FA value. Can you site a source?
(off topic) Someone else previously commented on this: from the NFL rumor mill on SI:
“Quarterback Billy Volek and center Justin Hartwig are leaving their agents and signing with Drew Rosenhaus, according to the Nashville Tennessean. Rosenhaus has reportedly doubled his client list in the last season or two”
This really sucks. I’m sad to mod-boss Rosenhaus getting clients. I suppose he’s promissing the moon to his players. Cheers to Lurie for not renegotiating. I’m hoping TO is not on the field and that this issue highlights and separates stupid, all-me, all-the-time agents like rosenhaus from the thoughtful agents out there.
Rosenhaus may be an ass but he gets the work done, thats why everyone sings with him.
I got it from a post in the last topic. I’ll repost what he said shortly.
This is the post sent up by a guy named Ray. I just hope it’s true.

NEWS FLASH THIS JUST IN
NO NEED TO WORRY ABOUT FS ANY LONGER…IT HAS JUST BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT PETE HUNTER IS THE STARTER FOR SURE…I HAVE INSIDE COWBOY SOURCES THAT HAVE TOLD ME THEY HAVE HAD A CONVERSATION WITH PETE HUNTER HIMSELF AND HE WILL BE THE STARTER…THIS INFO WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON BY THE COWBOYS CAMP…I AM PROUD TO BE THE FIRST ONE TO REVEAL THIS INFORMATION ON THIS GREAT COWBOYS WEBSITE…..WE WILL BE THE BEST DEFENSE THIS YEAR BY FAR…..IF NOW I CAN ONLY GET INFO ON A TOP WR TO PICK UP………SO FELLAS SCRATCH OFF THE FS DRAMA ….BIG P. HUNTER HAS SAID HE WILL BE THE CHOSEN ONE….
More on the subject from Ray. Just an FYI, but I thought it was worth re-posting since FS is the topic.
HEY D
IT JUST SO HAPPEN P. HUNTER IS FROM ATLANTIC CITY, NJ…I HAVE A FEW FRIENDS FROM THEIR AND I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH A PARTNER OF MINE WHO SAID HE SPOKE TO PETE….I THOUGHT I WAS THE BIGGEST COWBOY FAN AROUND BUT MY PARTNER MAN HE AS BIG OF DIEHARD THAN I AM….HE SAID HE WAS AT THIS GATHERING TO SEE THIS WEEKENDS FIGHT WHEN IN COME WALKING HUNTER…HE ALMOST FELL OUT OF HIS CHAIR….HE COULDNT WAIT TO CALL ME TO LET ME KNOW….THE MAIN THING IS HUNTER SAID HE IS REALLY EXCITED ABOUT BEING AT FS….WHICH IS A BIG SWITCH TO WHAT WE HEARD….
i agree with matt. i hope that hunter does change over to fs. and i have been wondering about kyle turley myself. i really like him. he will go to war for his qb. he doesn’t play with a mean streak. he is a mean streak!!
i also agree that we are not in as bad of a shape at wr than people say we are. sure we had some injuries, but that was a bad year. injuries kicked our butt last year worst than a lot of teams did. this year will be different.
GO BOYS!!!!
if this news about hunter accepting the FS role is true then i am psyched!!!! hunter is an IDEAL FS. he has all the tools. i had my doubts he could be a starting CB but if he’s recovered from the injury, which it sounds like he is, then our defense is set. beriault can back him up…. no need to sign schulters in my opinion. let’s save the cap room.
scott
this is awesome news!!! now this is why i love this site so much. thanks fellas.
i was watching nflel and the shawn mayer from the hamburg sea devils look good to, but i would take hunter in a heartbeat over him. even though he had 3 or 4 picks this weekend. i believe hunter could be a pro-bowl type player with big roy back there. i do honestly believe that our defense will be one of the best if not the best this year.
this would be great news if its true. he has the size just added 8-10 lbs great speed. this was an obvious choice from the git-go. hopefully hes not listening to his agent anymore, otherwise he couldve been this years antonio bryant.
This is the best news I could have wanted to hear. P Hunter agrees to play FS. What a defence !!!!
Look out Philly !!! I hope BO ( TO ) sets out this year. Philly may get a little respect from this COWBOY fan.
Hey guys,
I don’t want to spoil anyone’s fun, but I just want to caution you that I got this information about Pete Hunter from a guy, who talked to a guy, who supposedly talked to Pete directly. I don’t know who Ray is, and I certainly don’t have any reason to not believe what he says. I would hate to think that a fellow Cowboy fan would make something like that up, so I choose to believe him. To me, it makes sense, so I’m pretty comfortable with what he is saying.
With that having been said, how cool is this news? I love the fact that you guys are as happy about this as I am. I think Hunter can give us exactly what we need back there.
it would be good news…I just dont think it’s true. We would’ve seen something out of Spagnola or Rumors in foxsports.com….I mean there’s no reason to keep that as a secret.
Does anybody know the 40 times for all the cowboys wr’s?
Does it matter what Pete Hunter says.
I thought I understood Parcells to have no intention of playing him there.
yea. i mean i love the news but i wont believe it til i see the TRUTH right before my eyes from dallas’ site or another truthful one. ray has never been here before it seems. so to come here and say something like that….im not bein fooled. if your right then whatever but i need to see it before my eyes first….sorry.
yea. i mean i love the news but i wont believe it til i see the TRUTH right before my eyes from dallas’ site or another truthful one. ray has never been here before it seems. so to come here and say something like that….im not bein fooled. if your right then whatever but i need to see it before my eyes first….sorry.
sorry……that was my friend don
Understood. This is why I wanted to caution you guys about it. My choice to believe it is nothing more than that . . . my choice. You guys should absolutely make up your mind for yourselves. I too will feel a lot better hearing it from one of the “official” sites, but it won’t hurt me to enjoy the idea without confirmation. As soon as I do get official confirmation, I’ll be right back here with it, so stay tuned.
when the official message comes out I will be thrilled, but Ray did say that the news was to be released soon by the Cowboys officially. I can’t wait to read as truth more than rumor.
I am not a Pete Hunter fan at the corner but as a FS he should be fine. He has a few years experience and should be able to fit in. I do like the aspect of saving cap room for an OT or WR. Only time will tell. Minicamps are right around the corner.
I honestly think that the Cowboys will have 4 viable pro bowlers in the secondary. If Henry and Newman show the potential that they have they could some of the elite CB in the game. Roy is one of if not the best Safety in the game, and Hunter has all the attributes, if he does stay healthy I have no problem picturing him as a pro bowler.
Do we all think that Turley is the answer at RT? I sure do, imagine that line Adams, Allen, Johnson, Rivera, Turley.
Who’s Turley?
kudos to rob2 for qualifying his info. source about Pete.
Turley is a mean RT who plays with St. Louis, but he and Martz don’t seem to see eye to eye.
Matt,
Nice dreamin’ man!!! may G-d, Jerry and Bill read your thoughts!.
Why are we so worried about WR? Keyshawn and Glenn are at least B+ as receivers…..Morgan, Copper and Crayton are fine backup’s with upside potential. Who do you want? TO???
Is Turley a FA? What about a back injury, has that healed? He IS getting a little older at 29, but if the back is ok should have a few years left in him.
Turley is not an FA but is expected to get cut around the June 1st cuts. Then he will be a FA. His back may not be in great shape but he should be ok by the start of the year. As for his age 29 for a o-linemen is not that old, Rivera, allen and Adams(i think) are older than he is.
sweet, thanks for the 411.
btw DO IT PETE!!!! lol
kyle turley. he use to play for the saints, and the rams.
If both lines are solid this year I htink we could contend for the NFC West, if not even come out of the NFC, because Philly seems to be a mess, Minnesota seems to be next in line to take the NFC.
kyle doesn’t play with a mean streak. he is a mean streak!!!
i think we ok at wr also. and getting turley. well, that would make me happy. i watched him jerk someone helmet off and throw it in the stands because they grabbed brooks face mask and pulled.. that is what type of player we need protecting bledsoe.
i think turley is a parcells guy talk about someone who plays with a mean streak would be an ok decision id be worried about injuries with him.
pete hunter, i think he might be a antonio bryant of last year where a deal might be worked out later maybe during the season like bryant if he keeps his baby acting up.
wr we are fine in that position.
fs lance shulters from tennessee is the player i think we should go after june 1 IF he gets cut. hes not real old good size. downside was hurt most of last year though
matt
nfc east i think you mean…
if we get hunter to FS and turley then we are dominant. i have a pen right here lets start the paper work, i would love for both of them to finish there careers as cowboys. LETS GO DALLAS
why is eveybody convinced Pete Hunter will make a such a great FS.
He played some safety in college. Started all of 3 or 4 games at CB in the NFL before being hurt. Has been on the team a few years now and could not beat out the likes of Mario Edwards at CB.
While I do hope he agrees to play FS, he will have to compete and prove he is the best FS on our Team………which I am not sold on that just yet. If he is then fine, and let him play it for the year, but he may not be a long term Cowboy anyway………he seems to be upset by the Anthony Henry and Aaron Glenn signings………..need a thicker skin to be an NFL player than that.
Well if we remember a while back when hunter was playing FS in college he was a two time all american with a set of wheels on him. And he can also cover. The thing is we dont need and D Woodson back there. It will be highly unlikely we will be getting another one anytime soon. With all the crap going on in front of him at AL, and LB and all the other DB’s surronding him, he would REALLY have to suck to not be able to do his job.
I generally agree with your take on it Jon. Let him win the spot before we ship him off to the pro bowl. I hope he’s a long-term answer, like everyone, but let him play the part first.
My only counterpoint is that his post-Edwards potential was the reason the Cowboys did not pursue a big-time free agent CB early last season–that and the desire not to spend big-time money. I think Edwards being from a Division I school and having played the position at both levels is what slowed Pete’s transition to the spot. I don’t agree that it was necessarily a talent issue.
yeah, people are gettin’ a bit carried away with sending hunter to the pro bowl!! i like hunter and i think he has skills but he never really seemed to play CB as well as i thought he could. i think he could be a very good FS but i certainly don’t think we should be putting the guy in the pro bowl yet!!!! he needs to win the job first and then prove something…. THEN we can talk pro bowl.
scott
I wasn’t sending him to the pro bowl, I just said with his potential and a strong supporting cast why not?
lets wait til we AT LEAST hear if this jumbo is true. i would love for it but like i said before, i need the real proof ya know?
DREW PEARSON says we’ll go 12-4…..i like that. maybe we could get him to be a WR coach or something, that’s be sweet
Hey Guys
Yes, It is true about what my partner said about talking to Pete Hunter himself on being the new FS…Of course I am on the envy side but he himself is a true cowboys fan so I cant be mad…..I would never want to Lie to true Cowboys fans about our team….I take my boys serious and sometimes too much….but hey I grew up loving the star and thats the way it is…..My partner wouldnt lie to me so Im putting my rep news on the line….Pete told him he will be the starter so I jumped for joy……..If this info turns out to be a untruth I will apologize to the fullest degree to all Cowboys fans…….I would hate to get excited about something thats not real….
Yeah lets wait until anyone from the Cowboys staff says he will play FS. He should come to his senses sooner or later and see that playing FS will help him in alot of ways. I really want to see Keith Davis try in training camp tho, does anyone deserve it more than him?
Good point with Davis as he worked hard on the special teams. But I still think that the Cowboys will play Hunter for his pure talent.
And by the way just to clear the record of my appeareance on this site ….I just found out about this site right before the draft happened…..Truly happy to be here and respond as often as I can to great stories by Rafeal….Hats off to you guy for a true conversation piece for Cowboy listeners…
SORRY RAFAEL FOR SPELLING YOUR NAME WRONG….MY BAD
i dont think anyone is shipping hunter to the pro bowl yet, i think its just with his size speed and covering he makes the most sense, obviously. and your right we dont another d. woodsen back there we just need someone who will not make alot of mistakes is all, doesnt have to be a pro bowler.
SORRY RAFAEL FOR SPELLING YOUR NAME WRONG…MY BAD….
Guys, I would love to see Pete Hunter at FS. If that happens, our defense will be superb!
Ray, I truly hope it’s true, and next time you talk to your friend, ask him to tell Pete that Ronnie Lott switched to from CB to FS, and the rest as they say, IS HISTORY! Rod Woodson did the same thing later in his career. If you’re a player, you’re a player, no matter where you play.
Darren Woodson was a linebacker in college, and I think he turned out pretty good switching to safety, don’t you think? Oh, Steve Young was used as a running back in the USFL, and he turned out to be a pretty good QB as well.
To everybody talkin this Turley talk, did you see the short thing about him on ESPN where they said he was down to 240 lbs? He wont be ready this season if ever.
Ray,
Glad to see you in this post. I relayed the message, but I’m not the one who had the conversations. You stepping up in this segment adds some credibility to what told the guys here. As I said, I didn’t think you’d just offer us a lie, so I remain optimistic. Besides, what’s the worst that could happen? Pete decides not to go for the FS position? Hell, that’s where we were before we heard from you, so it’s great if it’s true, but no skin off mine if it’s not.
Kokopelli,
Thanks for the acknowledgement. I’m just trying to make sure all my Cowboy loving bretheren are aware of any tidbits on the team.
Carl, you’re absolutely correct about Turley. He has loss a tremendous amount of weight and more than likely is not going to play this year (even if he miraculously patched things up with Martz). I think Rogers/Petiti/Tuckers or maybe even Vollers will rotate at RT until a starter emerges. I’m pulling for Davis to be our FS. However, I’ve been hearing rumors of Corey Chavous being a potential cap casualty on June 1st with the Vikings. I think he’d be cheaper than Schulters and considerably healthier. I like Pete Hunter, but I seriously doubt Parcells trusts him just yet, especially with that diva stunt over the off-season. Should be interesting to see. I can’t wait for the season.
Maybe the Cowboys scheduale Hall and the FS from SEA and then recieve word that Hunter will play FS, and they don’t sign them. Just a thought.
And it’s nice to see the Cowboys finally getting some respect. ESPN.com rated them 26th to end the season, but they jumped up to 12th. The analysis says with the additions of offense and defense and with a weak NFC the Cowboys should be back into contention for a playoff spot. June 7th is a review of our team and our offseason.
onepaniolo:
I don’t think Young ever went from RB to QB. He was touted as being the #1 overall pick in the 1984 NFL Draft but signed a deal with the LA Express (USFL) because he’d have a better chance to start there than in the NFL. He did play one game as a RB. The league folded in 1985 and hs signed with the Bucs.
I think the discussion is about a player being at one position, then switching to another. Young was a QB in college, came out as a QB, played one game as a RB but went back to QB.
Raul V.,
I didn’t say he was a RB, I said he was used as a RB in the USFL, but I didn’t know it was for just one game. My bad on that one.
The point I was trying to make, was the fact that Steve Young was willing to be used as a RB, which IS a player switching positions for the good of the team, even if it’s just for one game. A better example of that would be Troy Brown, who primarily played DB last season for the Patriots, although he is a WR. Those were not permanent switches in position, but it is still a switch for the good of The TEAM, and I’m just hoping Hunter gets the message, or he’ll be out of a job.
TBrown is an excellent example - I agree with you there.
Robert Thomas made the switch a few years back when he would not make the team as a LB. He switched to FB and did an adequate job, since all they wanted him to do is block someone. He did get a few receptions as well…
Hunter has more experience at safety than people are reporting. He was a 3-year starter at Virginia Union. He played one year at CB, played SS his junior year and FS his senior year. That means he played safety 2 of his 3 years in college.
Sure, he wants to play corner. That’s where the money is. But he’s not going to beat out the other CBs on the field and, given the discussion about “team”, his best bet is to go back to his college position.
As for Ray’s comment about his friend talking to Hunter - there is some credibility to the sighting, as Hunter resides in Atlantic City.
Raul,
Great info on Hunter. I didn’t know he played mostly at safety in college. It makes even more sense to put him at safety, and really explains why BP and Jerry want him to move there. I truly hope what Ray says is true, because it will really solidify the DB. We can’t fault him for wanting to stay at CB, because of the money, but there are three people ahead of him in the depth chart. If he wants to play regularly, he’ll have to make the switch.
This is truly the best place for info on the Cowboys. Thanks Raul!
I heard that Stueesie from Tampa Bay may be cut on June 1, solely for money reasons, he might be a good one to two year fit at tackle untill the other guys develope
Hunter has a lot of potential, given his size he looks more the part of FS. I hope he makes that transition, and helps out the Cowboys.
Unfortunately, he has been on the team a few years now and has failed to produce at any starting position. He played pretty good last year in a few games prior to injury.
Was all the DIVA press releases through Pete or his agent? If it is just his agent saying something in the press that is one thing, but when you hear Parcells and Jones saying he will not be a Safety………after initially saying he would compete at Safety……..you wonder what the hech is going on.
Hunter is making a pretty good sum of money for a guy 4 years out of Virginia Union, he should call some of his fellow classmates and ask them if that is better than they are doing. I don’t know too many college grads pulling down that kinda dough before the age of 30.
Put on pads shut up and play football……..there have been a lot of players that played different postions in the Secondary………Hunter should take a look at what Ed Reed, Donovan Darius, or Sean Taylor are gettting paid. That ain’t chump change. A few of the high priced Corners like Woodson and Law got very little Free Agency Interest…….I think Law is going to have to settle for a lot less money than he wants. His injury leaves to big a question mark. He is a proven guy on the field, and is not drawing interest due to his injury. Hunter is unproven, and wants a big time payoff after finally being named a starter……..and then getting injured. I have also seen the way Jerry Jones treats these kids. In that HBO special, you saw Jerry calling Parents and agents when a kid got hurt. Some owners do not even know the name of these kids, much less care. While Jones attracts a lot of media attention, some of it warranted……..he is a classy guy. Talking to each player when releasing them, and making calls around the league for guys to get on with other teams.
Hunter should be thankful he is blessed to be in a class organization, with good coaches like Parcells and Zimmer………an Owner that cares and wants to win………..and any competitive athelete responds well to the challenge of additional talent on the squad. Just ask Drew Brees, that is the way you respond to a challenge at your position……..you go out and compete and show you are the best man to play the position. If asked to slide over to FS from CB you do it……..that is just what success in the NFL is about these days.
From what I’ve heard Kieth Davis needs a good look, can somebody tell me more about him, why he seems to be overlooked. Also whats lynn scott story. Its seems to me that any FA safety pick-up would have to be good and cheap, not likely. With that in mind and the fact that we don’t really know whats going on with P. Hunter, shouldn’t there be more thought to how those two guys will work out as FS. I’m really just wondering whats the lowdown on them.
I WISH THE BOYS CONVINCE MR. HUNTER THAT HIS BEST CHANCE TO BECOME A STAR IN THIS LEAGUE IS AT THE SAFETY POSITION HE HAS THE SIZE THE SPEED AND GOOD ENOUGH COVERAGE SKILLS TO BECOME ONE OF THE BEST AT THAT POSITION. ONLY IF HE COMES OFF OF THAT DIVA ACT AND DECIDES TO PUT ALL HIS ENERGY ON FOOTBALL.
