We are less than two weeks from the June 1st cuts, which constitute the last major player swaps before training camps open. Just as importantly from a fan’s perspective, June marks the beginning of the pre-season annual rollouts. Lindy’s, Althon’s, The Sporting News, Pro Football Weekly and others will offer their takes on the upcoming season.
I’d like to canvass the community and learn what annual or annuals you buy? Which of these do you find useful and which are larded with hype? I’d like to create a database of player values, using these annuals as a guide. From this, we can make our own assessments as to how far the Cowboys have improved, based solely on the upgrade in talent. We will consider coaching value at a later date.

the cowboys upgraded on many positions, practically every position except safety and tackle, but if pete hunter decides to play safety, the defense is officially a ROCK, ok and i think the addition of marco rivera brings experience to the line, and we should be fine along the line. the only downside(which isnt very bad) is the recieving corps, but with keyshawn terry and quincy morgan i aint too worried………… GO COWBOYS
L.J. Shelton just hit the cutting room floor already today. I dont want the Boys to spend any more money, but he would be worth it.
sporting news is always decent and pro football weekly’s is good. ill buy all of them though.
Sorry, got a little excited about L.J. —SportsWeekly
I want Lance Shulters
Should come for about 2 year 3.5 mill
Lance Schulters would be a nice addition, depending on the price. I remember that he was pretty good when he was on the 49ers, but I haven’t heard too much of him since, so I’d be cautious. Hunter may still be the man, but if not, then Davis or Scott. Beriault would be a surprise, but he seems more suited to back up Williams at SS.
Oh, Sporting News……..
i dont understand what this thread is about…can someone explain it to me
I have always read The Sporting News, but in recent years I have not been completely satisfied with their accuracy or timeliness. Cannot speak for the other pubs.
One thing to consider about Bierault……..if he develops into a good Safety, Woodson and Williams were both basically strong Safety types……but Woodson had 4.4 coverage speed as well as the ability to hit and tackle. Williams has shown some weakness at coverage but definitely has the ability to Hit. Bierault could be ok as long as he can keep the play in front of him.
If Beirault developed and Henry and Newman play to their potential as well as the Nickel Corner of Aaron Glenn……….three truly good cover guys and Two Hard Hitting Safeties may not be a bad thing. Roy can cover somewhat, but he was overtasked last year. He had to take over play calling the secondary and move over to SS his natural position, yet he was forced to help in coverage all the time due to our endless rotation at CB.
I am all for a FS that can COVER, and produce some picks as well as make tackles. As far as run stuffing I hope to see our front seven take on the task, and maybe have Roy coming on a blitz occassionally. Hunter seems the most obvious choice potential wise, if he is in fact going to compete for FS. I still doubt he is a long term solution, as he was only signed for one year and would probably jump ship to get another shot at corner from anybody……….which in these market conditions some team would probably give him.
Those voices on this blog, and our Head Coach calling for improvement in the front seven have certainly seen their wish come true. Ratliff, Canty, Ware, Burnett, Spears, and the FA Jason Ferguson……….plus a few more rookie FAs………we should see a dramatic increase in our front seven qb pressure and hopefully run stuffing too………that Green Bay game still kills me when they ran all over us. If only have of our recent additons play up to their potential we will have more pressure on the QB. The better our Coverage with Newman, Henry and Glenn…….the more often Parcells and Zimmer will use the Blitz…….something they got beat on almost every time they tried it last year.
I really believe this team is going to gel this year and put together a run at finishing off some good teams, and just beating up on some marginal teams. Something we never did last year. With ball control offense of Witten, Johnson, Glenn and Bledsoe with Jones, Thomas, and Barber carrying the load………oh la la. Look for us to rule the time of possession. Which is the key to any and every football game.
FA………maybe a veteran FS but we already looked at 2. I think the guy has to be significantly better than the ones we have on staff. Jerry said he was not looking for any Offensive Lineman, but then again you never know who might be cut so that could change.
Sporting News is nice for always having a piece of info on the Cowboys every week. Most of the paper is old news these days so I no longer subscribe to any of it. The Cowboys website and this blog are great information. I had the ranch report for a while, and it was good but it got repetititve after a while. Rafael writes better pieces with more research than most anything I have seen. His pre draft History on Parcells and how he fared and how he drafted was really insightful, and gave us all a pretty good look at what to expect.
Here’s an idea, why not play Beriault as an OLB. In the 3-4 scheme your OLB need coverage skills and a nose for the ball. In Beriault’s collegiate career he had over 100 tackles each year. That sounds like an active LB. The upside on him is that he plays well close to the line, sounds like an LB.
Matt you bring up a good point with Beriault. I think this guy can be our FS, especially since I have read many articles from you fellow bloggers stating that anyone can be the FS in this defense. Why not a rookie? But I do have one question about him to all of you guys that read this awesome blog. When I was watching the draft and we selected Beriault, every NFL analist kept saying that he was such a good pickup because he should have gone in the 2nd to 3rd round. Here is my question. Had we picked him up in the 2nd or 3rd round what would you guys be expecting of him? I’m pretty sure you guys would expect him to be our guy at FS. Why not have the same mentality towards him even if he was selected in the 6th round. Remember Parcells history with 6th round picks. Maybe he’s this years 6th round pick that is going to blossom.
Also I pretty much subscribe to alot of different places. I feel that ESPN insider isn’t that great because you could get all of the insider information from other places for free, but the magazine has good articles. Fox Sports has pretty good updates about what is going on in the NFL and our Boys.
I don’t buy any of them (I like free info), but I sometimes thumb through most of the ones mentioned in “Beat the Press”. I don’t put a lot of stock in their projections and think they are generally hype with high-percentage guessing and a smattering of skillful insights.
I don’t know what kffl.com offers in the way of analysis, but I am impressed with their breaking news or “Hot off the Wire” page. If it’s any indication of what else they do, they may be a source to consider here.
I would be interested in seeing a comparison between them and a track record of their accuracies or lack thereof.
if we put Beriault at LB. we could play jason, and spears on the line and play the rest with LB’s and DB’s on sure passing downs.
and as far as hunter getting a better contract from somewhere else. what is on his resume that would be apealling to someone else. he was hurt last year. his head coach paid a FA a $10 million signing bonus, and signed another FA db for insurance. how is that suppose to make someone feel about signing him when it looks like his own coach doesn’t believe in him at CB.
who is to say Burnett or Nguyen cannot cover from the LB spot……..
There is going to be plenty of competition at LB from Ware, Nguyen, Singleton, Thornton, James, and others………….
in a Nickel situation you want some guys out there that can cover……but we want Linebackers at LB that is why Bill Parcells has drafted all these big LBs……….we let Dexter Coakley go……he was great in coverage……..
we want LBs that are going to HIT and PUNISH and beat up TEs, RBs, and QBs……..
Matt, Matt, Matt…….
Beriault is a safety, not a Linebacker. He weighs 205 lbs and that is far too small to play linebacker in the NFL.Yes, he has a nose for the ball and thats what you want in a free safety, but also this guy is a smart player, another tangilble you look for in a free safety. When a safety leads your college team every year in tackles, well that tell me that your front seven wasn’t any good and a reason he had to play more close to the line. Beriault’s job this year will be to play special teams and learn the position at free safety which with his intelligence, he may be starting in San Diego week one.
From KFFL.com:
Jean-Jacques Taylor, reports for the Dallas Morning News, the Dallas Cowboys are working on a multi-year contract with exclusive rights free agent QB Tony Romo and that is why he has not signed his one-year tender offer.
and
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he’s disappointed OL Tyson Walter (hand) has not been cleared by doctors to participate fully in the team’s upcoming minicamp. Walter is recovering from a hand injury.
What’s up with Walter’s hand? I don’t recall hearing anything about it.
Thanks for the info on the site(KFFL.com) StarStruck……i checked it out, lots of news and NFL tidbits……..thanks!
GO SPURS!!!
No subscribing for me…those guys are informative but when it comes to predictions for dallas they are usually wrong….Here is my new place of subscription right here…As far as talent we hit on all cylinders, and why would’nt we be with that Jerzy guy leading us back to the glory days…WR is upmost important at this point…Free agent Reciever’s know we have a true gun slinger in Bledsoe and that is a seller for us as guys workout deals with teams after June 1st…Now that I thing about we never had a true down the field thrower like Bledsoe…He said in an interview that he cant throw 80 yrds anymore but that he can throw at least 77 ……Damn what an arm…even Roger the dodger couldnt compete with that…Certainly not Aikman…Do you guys understand what a QB like Bledsoe can accomplish when great hands are around him…..the QB position was the BIGGEST by far need and for that I grade us with an A+…..Watch Bledsoe have an MVP year…..Lets look at this for a moment…..Bledsoe is back with the same coach he went to the Superbowl with but now he is smarter, poised, and want to win like no other…WE have given him new life after Brady took all the credit for winning the SB with the patriots and now a unproven rookie with a broken leg who never played an NFL game rain on you…………..Boys we have a diamond about to get polished up to bring the shine back to the star……..
Ray,
While I agree Bledsoe could have a stellar year. I hope it is not because he can throw the ball 80 yards, but rather because Julius, Thomas, Barber and Thompson have hammered out 300 yards rushing and we pass for 200 a game. The best friend of QB is a running attack, and Drew can do the Play Action…….he will be an improvement at QB. And he has some great Arm Strenght………….Troy Aikman and Roger the Dodger could both CHUCK it. What is the accuracy of 80 yard passes? Roger was the Hail Mary Man in his career. I am a beliver in Bledsoe and glad we signed him, but Aikman and Roger could chuck the ball. The also usually put the ball on the spot, Aikman was deadly accurate and Roger hit Drew, Tony and Mike in Stride. I think Bledsoe can have a great season, but there is no reason to knock the arm strength of Troy or Roger.
I also remember an Old Randall Cunningham as a back up that saw some playing time. Randall could flat out chuck the football too.
I also agree and have stated similar comments about Bledsoe wanting to win the SB with Bill……….and wouldn’t they both love to beat Little Bill in the big Bowl……..oh la la…….
It would be like Obi Wan whopping up on Darth Vader Annakin Skywalker………come here boy…….let me show you a thing or TWO.
WHO IS YOUR MASTER? Take that lil Bill………
Go Sonics!!!!!
ESPN displays this list alphabetically by team, so, I copied it into Excel and resorted it. I thought this was much more interesting this way.

Amazing the three biggest players in FA, arguably, all have the most left under the cap. Although we really only signed 3 players. I guess you could say Denver and maybe Oakland were bigger players.
Make that 4 we signed Anthony too.
Those cap #’s are old. After the 5.6M rookie pool we only have about 2.3M left, and we need to leave 1M for early releases, training camp fodder (Star Wars this week), and injury settlements.
Now, onto another subject.
Did anyone hear the Ranch Report on DC.com today featuring our new QB Drew Bledsoe?
I am very impressed with him. I know that we all wanted to see Henson last year, and he is the “future” at QB right now.
But then I got to thinking, “What’s the upside to Bledsoe?”
He is the first quarterback we have who has won a playoff game since Aikman.
He is the first quarterback we have who has won a conference championship since Aikman.
He is the first quarterback we have had who has at least played in a Super Bowl since Aikman.
SO, Great - we have a name.
Now, Bledsoe did pretty well last year once he had a running game, and we have that. We also have better receivers, better TE’s, a better D, and a better coach.
I think Bledsoe in his prime is not quite Aikman in his prime, but I also think Bledsoe is at least 85% of what he was in the 90’s, which will be better than Vinny, better than Quincy, and better than Hutch.
I’m excited that we will have the best QB play since ‘98.
What do you think?
Big jim - unfortunately, the only game I saw Drew (bledsoe) play was the game against the patriots. during that game, I was elated to see Drew miss receivers, run around like a little girl, drop the ball, look confused, and basically provide zero confidence in his abilities. During that game I was thinking the Bill’s first pick would end up a top 5 pick for sure. Perhaps top 3 — specially with Bledsoe — a shadow of his former self - at the helm.
Obviously my forecast was wrong. But I never saw him play well. I know Lee Evans caught a few good passes so someone must have been throwing the ball to him.
As far as team assessment goes - I’d say our running game is hopefully on par with the Bill’s. They have two terrific backs and we have one, no great blocker and a probable strong change of game back in the A-train.
Don’t know much about their D. I thought they played pretty well at times. Ours? We’ll we’re better than last year because of the free agents but we’re nothing to fear unless 2 or 3 of the rookies prove they can play. I’d say we have reasons to believe we’re top 10 material. But certainly no lock for top 5.
While our TEs are hot (hard to beat the combination), I’m pretty sour on our WRs. I was of the thinking that we needed to draft a WR to seriously push our starters. Key is old and while he makes the tough catch, he’s not a legit #1 receive any longer. Ok - that’s debatable - I concede - but its a legit statement. Glenn was hot last year but he’s coming off a serious injury. Quincy might as well not be playing. I really expect nothing from the guy. Average at best. And last year’s rookies? Well, I’d put them as long shots to become anything but 4th and 5th receivers throughout their careers.
Big Jim and Car,
I agree I think Bledsoe still has tread on his tires, and can chuck the ball. He is a pure pocket passer, but as long as the Offensive Line improves and Julius Jones is as good as he was in our last 8 games last year………Drew Bledsoe will be lethal. A pocket passer who can execute the play action with two good tight ends………he is going to remind us a lot of Aikman back in the day hooking up with Novacek on those 20 yard passes up the middle of the wide open field when the LBs commit to the run. I think Defenses are going to concentrate on stopping Julius, the old book on Dallas was stop Emmit and make Troy and the WRs beat us. Well, that never worked out very well for those defenses. First they had a hard time stopping our running game, but when they overloaded the line of scrimmage they got burned by Troy hitting Novacek, Irvin, Kevin Williams, or Moose or Emmit out of the backfield. Add in the Draw and Screen Play along with a play action pass and the Dallas Offense could be formidable indeed. Bledsoe basically is a younger version of Vinny, hopefullly without the interceptions. Vinny had not started in a couple of years and was not brought in to start, Drew has always been a starter except when injury got Tom Brady on the field. Still it was Drew Bledsoe in the playoffs that put them in the Super Bowl. You know that three rings on Brady’s fingers are gnawing at Drew. He went to the Bowl with Bill and Lost to Favre, Reggie White, Desmond Howard and Andre Rison. Unfortunately Drew had 4 interceptions and was Reggie sacked him 3 times. However, that was a tough GB Defense. Farve was in his prime, and Desmond Howard finally lived up to some of his hype albeit on special teams. Pats made a game out of it, but were outplayed by a better team. Bledsoe had Terry Glenn and Ben Coates………now he has Terry Glen and Jason Witten………not bad. The guy that was throwing all those Ben Coates yards and TDs was Bledsoe. Jason will love this guy. While we all remember our Dallas Teams of the Nineties we are actually looking more like those Patriots than our own Cowboys or the Jets………with Bledsoe and Glenn……..and then a lot of youth on Defense……….Parcells had a young corp of linebackers many of whom have now won 3 Super Bowls with the Pats.
Car,
I agree we need a Young Stud at WR. For a couple of reasons. One Key and Glenn both showed age with injury last year, however young players get hurt too. But really the reason I want a WR is for the long term Development of Drew Henson. Troy Aikman talked about the timing of Irvin, Novacke and how impressed he was with Owens and McNabb last year as far as timing went. He said it takes years and talked about Marvin Harrison and Peyton or Torry Holt at the Rams……….all working with the same QB over and over.
While Drew Henson is throwing 6000 passes in the offseason he is throwing them to Quincy Morgan. A guy I have very little faith in long term as a solution at WR, plus Morgan is older than A Bryant was………so adding some youth at WR that have the time to work and develop with Henson would be the equivalent of having AAA team getting ready to go to the big leagues. When they step up they all make it together.
Crayton and Cooper showed promise. I have not heard if those two worked at the Ranch or not……….maybe so. While I do not think you have to draft a WR in the 1st round to find a player, I would like a guy that has the size and some speed along with physical skills to be a threat at WR for our team.
Terry Glenn was amazing last year before injury, and Keyshawn was pretty consistent. Those two are great players, but their age is an issue. When Irvin went down, we took gambles on Ismail, Galloway and others. I think getting a young WR in next years draft with a 2nd or 3rd pick or a 1st if a player warrants it……….could work. Bill Parcells has not drafted WRs very high. Nonetheless he has had success with guys like Troy Brown and Terry Glenn(although he didnt want Glenn in draft)……….still i would like to see some YOUTH at WR for the future of the franchise and Henson and Romo to work with.
Carioca
Now that we have signed A train, I think our running game compares favorably to Buffalo, and hopefully, with Rivera, our protection will be better for Bledsoe. I’m keeping my fingers crossed until Bledsoe gives me reason not to trust him.
I am a little curious as to why you have so little faith in our WRs. I know everyone seems to be saying that we need a burner to stretch the field, but I’m not ready to throw in the towel on these guys yet. We didn’t have a “possession” receiver until Key got here, and clearly we needed that. I think he’s playing his role very well. Terry proved last year that he could stretch the field before he got hurt, and I know of no reason to believe he can’t do it again now that he’s healthy. Also, don’t forget about Copper and Crayton. Both have seemingly made significant improvements over last year from what I’ve read. We haven’t even seen what Crowder can do, and all reports are that he can move.
If they turn out to be no more than you predict, you can bet we’ll be looking at some of the burners in next year’s draft.
To get back to the original point of this post….
The print “annuals” are an anachronism, absolutely useless in the Internet age. When I was a kid in the 1980s, they were much anticipated. But they ceased being relevant about 10 years ago.
Who cares about Street & Smith when I have “Cowboys Blog”!!!!
i agree with you on that we are not in a real bad need at WR. i think we can address that problem in the next couple of drafts unless or younger guys show something. and that might be what bp is doing. my main concern right now is FS, and ORT. i have read on “here” that hunter is moving to FS. if so, that would be wonderful. the only thing is. that there is no word of it on dallascowboys.com. and something that important would be headlines concedering the news is scarous around the ranch. that would be something to report. i am also wondering if kyle turley get booted from the rams; if we might look at him. and going back to FS. i wonder who hard it would be to get a FS that play in the nflel. there is a kid by the name of shawn mayer that plays for hamburg sea devils that is pretty good. what does everyone think of him or does anyone know who i am talking about.
Jon
I thought I read somewhere (I’m looking for the source) that the recipients of Henson’s and Romo’s numerous passes this off season were Crayton and Copper.
Its just me but why not put Romo as the backup QB, he has the skills, he has far more experience then Henson and played far better in preseason last year. Why does Henson have to be the face of the future, why not Romo?
Jon,
I read the same thing, so I’ll look for the source also.
StarStruck
Sorry, I was answering your post. Not Jons
I hope so, they both showed promise Crayton and Cooper.
Randal Williams was another disappointment at WR, he h
he had size and speed but never seemed to catch anything…….it appears WR is as difficult a position to fill as QB and DE………plenty of first round bust at WR out there as well.
Parcells seems to put higher value on the TE than a WR. So at least he spent a good pick on Witten. He sure looks like the real deal. In a lot of respects a good TE can be more difficult to cover.
That is the interesting prospect of a guy like Mike Williams from USC. He is going to be deadly in the red zone. I do not see him being a Randy Moss or TO, but he might catch more TDs than either of them. Who is going to cover him? He is faster than a LB and so much bigger and stronger than any Corner in the league……..he is going to win a lot of jump balls……….no matter where he lines up.
matt,
if you remember last season Henson was demoted and did not dress a game or two late in the season.
everytime the media approaches jerry jones he says…….do not forget about Romo. I think Parcells and Jones see something in Romo they like. Although he is from a small school, he played well. I watched another Payton award winner Lang Campbell, at William and Mary, he is with the Browns, I think he will be an NFL QB one day. He put up yards against ACC schools and torched most of the competition.
I think Romo, like Henson was also kept at the ranch for a reason. While Henson, has a letter better height size and speed, Romo threw a hech of a lot of yards in college. While Henson has the Michigan Pedigree and the size and all the athletic prowess……….if Romo has the Heart………Bill Parcells will play the best player to win the football game……..if that is Romo, Henson, Bledsoe………or Woody Dantzler at QB……….remember Jones had written off and benched Carter………and Bill named him the starter cuz he was the best qb on the roster at the time…….
Did access to the site stop for anyone one else? I had to go on cached version of it. if anyone knows what this is about please tell me.
spagnola just posted a short article on ROMO on Dallascowboys.com
As I read the blog I realize that I’m the pessimist Cowboys fan. Well, its a role I welcome.
about our WRs: I really see our WRs are a plebian group. Key can be a possession WR and that’s good, but he’s not going to cause fear to the defensive coordinator. Glenn is getting older and is coming off a significant injury. Behind them we’ve got nothing better than any other marginal team’s WR candidates.
about Henson and Romo: I live in SF so I depend on nationally televised preseason games (Direct TV Sunday ticket does not carry preseason). The only game I recall seeing from Drew Henson was actually pretty good. I just recall his passes being sharp and on the money. The only action I saw from Romo was pittiful. His come back against the raiders happened after several of his drives fizzled. And perhaps I’m wrong, but I recall him just looking lost in the backfield. I also saw Henson in Oxnard (it was a great trip). Even with my pessimistic nature I couldn’t help but to be excited. Henson excuted quite well in the afternoon drills.
I am not impressed with Morgan. Key and Glenn are good recievers and would be starters on any NFL team other than the Raiders……….but they are getting old quick……….
my fear at WR is one of those two gets hurt again and then we have only youth. Fortunately Parcells prefers to Run the Ball, and use 2 TE set, so Campbell and Witten……..will get plenty of action……….with Witten being more of a recieving TE…………..
However if you look at the youth along both sides of the ball……….we have good mix…………and have high draft picks at most of our key positiions………..except WR………..A Bryant is the guy that really was supposed to develop into that special Wideout……….and I just do not get the feeling Quincy Morgan has it either………i know he was hurt last year………but he was nothing special in cleveland…………ever……….
Of course we never really had much depth at WR other than Irvin and Harper. Obviously we did not know Jimmy Smith was what he turned out to be………we always seemed to have a role playing 3rd wr that played clutch when we needed it……….
I too use KFFL…..very usefull. I rank in order of being the best after this blog is Cowboys website. Cowboys Plus. But truthfully I think the one guy that knows his Cowboys is Mickey Spagnola. I have always been a big fan.
Barring injury, I think our WRs are good enough to win with, because our running game will take control, especially with the addition of Rivera, Barber and A-Train, plus Witten’s emergence and the return of Campbell.
However, I do agree that we will need to address the need for a young stud WR in next year’s draft, or FA. We’ll see what transpires after June 1, if we can bolster the RT, FS and WR positions. Regardless, I still see this team doing great things this season.
The Patriots are the model team of excellence, and can anyone name their WR’s? All our WR’s need to do is stay healthy and do their roles, particulary in blocking, because Witten is our best reciever. A real good running game (Jones, Thomas, Barber) will lighten the load for our WR and open the passing game. Our WR’s will be fine.
