Pick Your Starters — Nickel Formations

Posted: May 21, 2005 @ 11:32 am

When Blog reader Don Swalinksi caught up to former LB Bryan Cox last month, Cox predicted Dallas might spend a high pick on a cornerback, reasoning that NFL teams needed three corners in this day of spread offenses in order to be effective.

The Cowboys did follow Cox’ advice, though they used free agency to stock their secondary, signing CB Anthony Henry in March and CB Aaron Glenn one week after the draft, when Glenn was cut by the Texans. The cornerbacks solve the Cowboys most glaring defensive hole from 2004, when the team was unable to field a sound base secondary, much less one that could produce in passing situations.

That does not mean the secondary is whole. Free safety remains an enigma, with the Cowboys closely watching the waiver wire for any late veteran cuts. However, the players already on the roster give us a chance to fill out the rest of the positions.

Base defense:

  • Left corner — Terrence Newman
  • Strong safety — Roy Williams
  • Free safety — Lynn Scott
  • Right corner — Anthony Henry
  • Darren Woodson’s back injury just a week before camp least season devastated this unit. The secondary thrived in ‘03 with a combination of Williams at SS and Woodson at FS and Newman and Mario Edwards at the corners. Woodson’s skill at coverage let Williams play in the box, where his playmaking skills came to the fore. Just as important, Woodson provided cover for Edwards and Newman, who could play aggressive man coverage, allowing DC Mike Zimmer to blitz, which was a necessity given the anemic rush generated by the front four.

Woodson’s injury, which ended his career, caused a domino effect that weakened the entire defense. With no dependable free safety on the roster, Zimmer moved Williams to the free. Coverage is not Williams’ forte, and he struggled. Furthermore, when he had to play fifteen yards off the line of scrimmage, he could not be used as a blitzer. Tony Dixon replaced Williams in the box but could not hold the job.

With the safety positons so unsettled, Zimmer softened his coverage. Newman did not adjust to the more passive scheme and his play regressed. He was uncertain of when to attack the ball and when to back off. Teams identified his tentativeness and attacked him mercilessly. His play improved at mid-season, when Zimmer finally moved Williams back to SS and began blitzing again, but he never found consistency.

Up front, the lack of blitz support exposed how thin the Dallas rush really was; aside from LaRoi Glover and Greg Ellis, nobody else up front could bring heat on a regular basis. Henry’s addition means the Cowboys should play more of the press coverage we saw in ‘03, rather than the half-hearted zones of ‘04. Williams will start at his natural strong safety postion, and his play should respond.

    Nickel packages
    4-2-5

  • LE — Greg Ellis
  • LT — Marcus Spears
  • RT — LaRoi Glover
  • RE — Demarcus Ware
  • LB — Dat Nguyen
  • LB — Kevin Burnett
  • LCB — Terrence Newman
  • SlotCB — Anthony Henry
  • RCB — Aaron Glenn
  • SS — Roy Williams
  • FS — Pete Hunter
  • The 4-2-5 package has been the Cowboys base nickel set for years, though they do mix in some 3-3-5 looks from time to time. The objective up front is to put your best four pass rushers in the game, regardless of position. Keep an eye on 7th rounder Jay Ratliff, a DE with some speed. If he shows good rush skills inside, he could line up next to Glover inside. Or, he could line up wide, with Ellis moving to tackle, as he has in the past.

    3-3-5

  • LE — Marcus Spears
  • NT — LaRoi Glover
  • RE — Greg Ellis
  • OLB — Kevin Burnett
  • MLB — Dat Nguyen
  • OLB — Demarcus Ware
  • LCB — Terrence Newman
  • SlotCB — Anthony Henry
  • RCB — Aaron Glenn
  • SS — Roy Williams
  • FS — Pete Hunter
  • In the secondary, the question is which corner will line up in the slot. Since many offenses place their best receiver in the slot in three WR sets, defenses now put their best cover corner at that position. Tampa Bay, for example has used Ronde Barber there for years. If the corner is a good rusher, and if his team has a FS who can cover, he can also be used effectively as a corner blitzer. Glenn played LC at Houston, so do not be surprised if Newman gets the call inside. However, my guess is that Henry will get this task and that Glenn will line up on the right side. Henry has experience as a nickel corner and racked up ten interceptions as a rookie playing inside.

      Rafael,

I disagree with your 3-3-5 formation, if the boys do decide to use that formation would it not make for sense to play there biggest NT in Ferguson rather than playing Glover who is undersized.

      Matt,

You would use a 3-3-5 on passing downs. Who would you rather have rushing the passer on 3rd and 8, Ferguson or Glover? It’s no contest.

This is off topic but I was wondering why we would need a vet at ORT.
We have plenty of potential there and we will improove just on the fact that there will be a veteran and solid ORG, Rivera, and a great blocking TE, Campbell. With these two players at the bookends of whoever plays ORT will make that player seem better and make the right side far stronger.

Back to D althogh I like your alignment, Rafael, what about Canty? I heard he could be ready by the start of the season. If that happens will he be taking Ellis’s job in the 3-4 or in the nickel or will he just sit on the bench. Because according to alot of scouts this guy had the skill and size to be a 1st rounder. If we would have drafted him there Ellis would be gone so what to do with Ellis if Canty does step up along with Spears on the other end. Will this be the last season for Ellis in Dallas? Or will they keep him as insurance.

What about Canty indeed? He should be a lock in passing situations, looking to crush the pocket or distrupt the passing lanes with his height/reach and swat some balls down. Canty will play as billed and it’s appropraite he dons #74!

matt i think you bring the best argument against Ellis. This may be the reason why alot of people make the argument that Ellis’s days are numbered here in Big “D”. I think if Canty can be healthy that he will be spelling Ellis from some snaps. Especially in the allignmenst when we go 3 up front. I think on passing downs our front 3 would be Canty,Glover,Spears. I have a feeling this will be Ellis’s last year even though I have the most respect for him since he has been one of the most consistent if not the most consistent player on our D. Even with an anemic rush. I say next year he could be dealt to somebody for a high round pick or even for a playmaking WR. The only way this happens is if our 2 1st round picks pan out along with Canty.

No I do not see us dealing Glover OR Ellis.
Rotation, Rotarion, Rotation along the Dline keeps everybody fresh and mean!! Y’all did watch the boys from ‘92 - ‘96 right?
The back ups finally went other places and started.
That is what makes for sacks in the 4th quarter without blitzing.

what is wonderful about all this is that we actually have guys good enough to argue about putting in the game.

While it was wishful thinking of drafting Antrel Rolle to address our awful secondary. The additions of Henry and Glenn are great. Glenn might be the best cover guy we have and is only 2 years removed from a pro bowl. His experience will be great in getting Newman back on track. From a salary cap standpoint Glenn is great insurance and cheap for a Corner with his level of experience. If Newman or Henry struggle then you can bench em or switch them to nickel and let Glenn start, he can still cover. Any injury to our starters and Hunter gets another shot at Corner along with guys that should improve like Frazier and Reeves.

I think Roy will also bounce back, the better coverage of Henry an improved Newman and Glenn will allow Roy to bring it once again. While we are yet to see him, perhaps Beirault gets some time on the field as well………although it might be better on earlier downs…….you could rotate him and Hunter at FS………Beirault on 1 and 2nd or short yardage situations and Hunter in on passing downs. You would have fresh legs to play as a coverage FS which is a zone for the Cowboys. Zimmer has never had the kind of talent he has right now in the secondary. Newman, Henry, Glenn add in Roy and the FS while still important should not be the glaring hole that is was last year. Newman could also rotate back or Henry in the FS position. Those guys might have some good picks with their ball skills……….maybe you put a bigger stronger Hunter on a guy like TO to rough him up a bit and have Newman or Henry as an FS……..Frazier should continue to improve along with the other Sophomore Committee at Corner……Reeves and Frazier should still see some playing time. Personally, I think Pete Hunter could be a good FS, if speed and size and coverage. If his head is screwed on right he might find himself starting.

The loss of a Darren Woodson was tremendous a former LB that hit like a LB and could cover extremely well with his 4.4 speed. Another guy that should be bound for the HOF.

Chris Canty when healthy could well be our best pass rushing DE. He has played end in both 3-4 and 4-3 at UVA. He has a nice combination of height strenghth and speed. Don’t be surprised if he is batting down some passes and remind us all of Too Tall. If this kid puts on 20lbs of muscle over the next 2 years he could be scary. While I am normally not too excited about Jerry Jones pounding on the table for a player, Canty goes in 2nd round or higher if not for the beer bottle incident. Again we have something we have not had since Jimmy Johnson era……….depth.

These new additions to our Defense……….remind me a lot of Jeffcoat and Hennings the landry leftovers and then we started getting the youth movement and of course Charles Haley(speaking of why isn’t he in the HOF as a 49er and a Cowboy) Ellis and Glover will also have something they got very little of the last few years………….REST!!!!! It may add years to two veterans that are going to continue to be Cowboys……….

while I think Bill will run a lot of 3-4 in training camp and preseason………Dallas regular season will still employ a lot of 4-3……..but the players already know how to play it……….so do the coaches……..so BP wants Zimmer and the old Boys and the new kids on the block to get a lot of time in the 3-4 and figure out who plays where and when. You don’t trade guys like Ellis and Glover they are too hard to find.

      matt,

i love your take on the OT position. i am in TOAL AGREEMENT with you….BUt a VET OT will be nice if CHEAP because it could provide even more help at that specific position for our youngins than RIVER could.

      cowboycarlos,

i like your idea too. i have been with that for so long now…ROTATION is key. we finally have it and its with very good players. why throw it away ya know? ill jsut be sad in a few years if our young guys get very good and wanna stop the rotating and go on to full time places elsewhere, cuz that would suck. BUT its nice to know that these young guys, in a few years when they may want to leave for starting spots elsewhere, will be just taking over for the spots of our old guys now (glover, ellis, ferguson) so maybe it wouldnt be all too bad cuz they could get the starting roles here.

OH MY GOSH!!!! im dying for september to be here!!! SD you betta watch out!!!

      Jon,

The fact that players like Ellis and Glover are hard to find, are the reason why we should trade them sooner rather than later. Now I agree to keep them for this year as they will be important for the devellopment of the rookies and key factors in the 4-3 alignment. However in the long run when the 3-4 becomes the big majority of our alignment, those two will be undersized for us but good additions anywhere else, which gives us a chance to get a high draft pick out of them. Although i agree rotation is good, but lets get guys who can fit in the system for years to come.

      Mat:

You can’t be serious when you talk of Glover and Ellis walking out of the Ranch, they are too good to be let go……. You need to remember that Spears, Ware, Canty and even Ratliff are rookies and Ferguson is above 30. In a 3-4, in the 2006 season, who would you play to spare Ferguson? Carson? At times looked unable to break the pocket, and that being covered by one Oliner, you mean he’s going to break it with a 2 Oliners coverage? Yeah, I don’t think so……. Glover has taken double coverage almost every game in the past 3 seasons and playing like 30 snaps a game, he’s going to be a nightmare to cover……… and Ellis is in the same page, in almost every game he faces the RT and TE, and can make things happen, again play him 30 snaps a game and you’ll be very happy.

      Jon:

I guess that the Cowboys will take to the field a 4-3 almost the same quantity of snaps as a 3-4, there’s just too much talent on the line to be on the bench, the only idea of playing Glover along Ferguson inside, sounds a lot like “you’ve got to run to the outside, there is a wall inside…..”. You would see a 3-4 when Bill wants to hide the hot LB or the S named Roy.

this is way off topic but i had to bring it up. did anyone listen to the huddle on ESPN radio today? much to my surprise darren woodson made his debut today! and woody had some interesting things to say about dallas. for starters, when asked about the free safety competion he said he felt keith davis and pete hunter would both be in the mix there. the fact that he mentioned hunter made me think he knows something that we don’t. also, when asked about drew henson he said he did not agree with parcell’s decision to keep henson on the bench late last year when the team was out of contention. he said hneson can make all the throws in practice but he really wanted to see what he would do in a game when the bullets were flying. very interesting stuff…. the comment about henson was something he surely couldn’t say while on the team last year.

      Rafael:

The only thing that makes me think twice of your nickel formations, is the running lanes that could be open with a good OL, especially with the 3-3-5, I think that you could compensate that with Dat and Roy playing close to the line, but I think that Singleton is the best run stopper the Cowboys have at OLB.

      Ryan:

I can’t speak for the guys before him, but I know exactly why Erik Williams is on that list… he was a VICIOUS offensive linemen and used literally all means at his disposal to stop defenders from getting by him… he would rip them down by their helmet, give them a forearm to the ear-hole, knee ‘em in the groin… pretty much any dirty tactic you can think of, he used.

And as far as the Cory Chavous thing is concerned, I know a guy on the inside who has heard that Chavous’ contract isn’t something the Cowboys would be interested in paying. He would be leaving Minny because they aren’t paying him enough, so naturally the Cowboys aren’t going to want to fork over all that cash after they spent so much money already. He told me there’s about a 5% chance of Chavous playing in Dallas next year.

      * the Eric Williams rule — no hands to the facemask by offensive linemen.
      * the Mel Renfro rule — allows a “double touch” by the offense. Enacted in 1978.
      * the Michael Irvin rules — (1) no taunting. (2) offensive pass interference: prohibiting WR’s to push off CB’s, is also often called “the Michael Irvin rule.”

Haley isn’t in the hall as a Cowboy OR 49er. Why wouldn’t a DE like Hlaey who has 5 SB rings be in the hall? Had he won those last 3 with someone other than the Cowboys, say NY Giants, we all know he would be in.

      Josh on May 21st, 2005 9:26 pm

It is nice to argue about the D-Line, however, lets not get to far ahead of ourselves. We have basically penciled in 4 rookies on defense without even a preseason game. Ellis and Glover should go nowhere until we find out what we actually have. I am just as excited as anyone, but they have to prove themselves first. I hope spears, ware, burnett, and canty can all be contributors, but realistically, that will probably not happen. The odds are not in favor of a half rookie defense. I hope they prove me wrong.

i agree with josh, i just dont see 4 rookies stepping up to be starters. its takes a year or two to play at the level of the nfl. i hope im wrong, and they all play great, but realistically it isnt going to happen.

    21. 21
Rafael Vela on May 21st, 2005 10:09 pm

      Josh,

Speaking only for myself, I would only pencil in two rookies as starters, those being Spears and Burnett. One of the end positions is wide open and if Spears can’t beat out Erik Ogbagu or Kenyon Coleman, something is very wrong with him. In the linebacking corps, I’m going on a hunch and putting Burnett ahead of Bradie James. Now, you’ve been less than impressed with Bradie yourself, if memory serves me correctly. Somebody has to fill in for Dexter Coakley.

I’ve got Ware as a situational rusher, which makes the most sense given his previous level of talent. Hey, this defense was pretty stinky last year. Four rookies may seem high, but I’m going to be far more concerned if the rookie numbers in this unit are low. Positions are hiring, as they say.

    22. 22
Rafael Vela on May 21st, 2005 10:11 pm

That line on Ware should read “previous level of competition.”

    23. 23
      Jon on May 22nd, 2005 12:12 am

If Ware is the Kind of PLAYER Parcells thinks………he is going to be on the field a LOT, and probably full time in a 3-4 alignment. Parcells has mentioned not throwing him out there all the time in a 4-3 as a DE so he wont face tackles every down.

      Mat,
Ellis and Glover are both getting up there in age. Ellis is 9 years I think and Glover over 10. While there would be some interest for quality players and especially a Pro Bowl DT like Glover, there will be considerably less for their age and time served.

We are better off keeping both of those guys in Stars, and letting our youth develop around them . Then you add the likes of Ware, Spears, Canty, Burnett, Ratliff in the mix. After we sign all these agents we are still under the cap. We could afford a WR other than Horn, Owens or Harrison.

I want a young WR, especially considering the youth at RB and QB to develop along with those guys. However, not at the expense of Glover and Ellis……those guys are too good to let go. Watch the year they both have this year, with the help Parcells got around them. Ferguson, Canty, Spears, Ware, Burnett, Ratliff the guys that will benefit the most are going to be Glover and Ellis………..my bet is Ellis is going to get 13 sacks and take a trip to Honolulu……..Glover goes every year anyway.

      Raul,

You forgoet one the 2005 Roy Williams RUle………….the Horse Collar Tackle…….or you might call it the TO out of the playoffs we better ban that tackling rule……….but the Roy Rule works for me.

It is very easy to get pumped about this year, and I am a fan of letting our huge rookie core play. However, we must remember there are always busts and from i’ve heard is those bust will likely not be from the draft exluding maybe Pettiti and Ratliff. The guy I worry the most about being a bust is actually Henry. Since his rookie season he hasn’t been that affective. I think if he struggles at CB he would be a nice fit at FS where he has the size and we move Glenn into the starting role at CB.

Back to the original post. If you have Hunter at FS in the nickel package why would he refuse to play in all formations and play in that one. And even if he does decide to play FS will he. Davis seems to be on the good side with BP, and if thats the case would he not have the best chance at the vacant FS position.

I’m very excited about the Cowboys prospects on defense this year, but I’m a little worried about the receiving core. Keyshawn is an excellent possession reciever, but that’s about it. Glenn is injury prone and Morgan so far is inconsistent and a #2 at best. The wildcards of the bunch have to be Crayton and Copper. Crayton showed the ability to get deep last year and both he and Copper were decent when coming in on 3, 4 and 5 reciever sets. However with both Keyshawn and Glenn out of the lineup, the passing game suffered. J.J. and Whitten will take the pressure off of the wideouts though and Bledsoe should be a major upgrade over Vinny.

We all need to realize tho that everyone is acting like all the rookies are going to be good. You NEVER have a situation where every single rookie pans out for your team. Its never happened. At least one will not be as good as we hype him up to be. Maybe its Canty, Beruilt, or Ratliff. But trading Ellis and Glover? Forget about it, we need to keep our proven talent UNTIL these rookies prove to us they can play. Glover is still the premeire DT in the NFL, and Ellis has been one of our most consistent players who have absolutely NO help. I think we hang onto these guys for years to come.

Few rookies will be able to step in and be all stars just yet. But even with no rookies taking up starting spots, we are much better this year. With that in mind, we can look at the regular 4-3 and 3-4 D from last year and make a new line-up for this year. In the 4-3 you have Ellis, Glover, Ferguson on line , with a hole at DE that can be filled by any of the four Rookies(I’m sure one of them will be able to do better right out of training camp than Marcellus Wiley did), Then you have the LB’s, Dat in the middle, Singelton, James. The CB’s are Newman and Henry or Glenn. With Roy at S along with Davis or Hunter. The 3-4 consists of DEs ellis and Glover NT ferguson, OLBs singelton and somebody new with james and Dat in the middle. The DBs are the same as the 4-3.

I believe(and history shows) that we can’t count on rookies stepping up big just yet, but even without rookies stepping up we have already upgraded our def. mightly. The only holes that aren’t deffintly filled by returning starters or proven vets, are one FS, one DE and one OLB. And you can’t tell me one of those three or four DEs wont step up for the DE spot.

So without even factoring in a rookie with a breakout season, we can still look at a formidable def. with no glaring holes, maybe weak spots(FS, OLB) but no holes. And that is sooo sweet.

Agreed, Glover is a stud and Ellis has made do with crappy teamates. As for the rest, READ my post! Nothing is a done deal TODAY.

      well said Charlie…..

Practice and Training Camp are going to see a LOT of 3-4 preseason games too…….but BP is still going to use a lot of 4-3 this year especially………..remember we are transitioning……..not there yet…..

Rotation Rotation……..Formation Formation……..for the first time in a while at least we have some options……

Love the last post from Lou.

That’s what I’ve been saying all along. We cannot deal Ellis or Glover, at least not now. While there is great reason for excitement, we still don’t know what these guys are going to do when they take the field. Hell, we don’t know if some of these guys are going to be overwhelmed by the NFL experience. Some of them may very well become busts. We don’t even know for sure that all of these guys will make the team. Getting rid of one or two of your best defensiive players is not a smart thing to do.

Like I said before folks, we are pinning our hopes on a bunch of puppies right now. I want to see them when they’ve grown some teeth before I would even consider trading either of those guys. If they’ve lost their value by then, so be it.

One last thing guys, we were decimated by injuries last year. This is the NFL, and people do get hurt.

Let’s just say for the sake of argument, that all of the rookies start playing the type of football we all hope they will. Let’s also say that we get four starters out of this draft class. Someone’s gonna get hurt at some point during the season. Wouldn’t you love to have a Glover or Ellis to turn to when it does?

Even if we’re lucky and no one gets hurt, they WILL get tired. Again, Glover and/or Ellis would be great as replacements. That’s all I’m saying.

Why don’t you have Jason Fergueson in either situation? I guess i could see him being left out of the 4-2-5 defense, because it’s a defense with smaller lineman, but why the 3-3-5? If you use him in the 3-4 defense, why not use him in the 3-3-5? There’s nothing diferent with line in the two defenses.

A 4-3 def. or a 3-4 def you only have 4 def. backs in the game. In a 3-3-5 def. you got 5 def. backs in the game meaning there is a better chance of a passing play. I would think they would want their best penatrating down linemen in the game with that def. called. That would include Glover.

      Jam,

While I agree Glover as the NT in pass rushing is a must. He could also see time at DE in a 3-4 front.

Regardless the guy is on the team and better remain there until our Rookies MAN UP and show what they got. Enough of this talk of trade Ellis and Glover……….we finally got some high draft picks from a guy that knows the front seven named Parcells……..but no reason to scuttle the ship in the middle of the atlantic…….lets make it to the BOWL first.

Dead on again, Jon. No need for me to say anything else on the topic.

    Got something to say?
