How many of you play fantasy ball? How many teams do you run in a season? Do you draft on straight value, or do you try to get as many Cowboys players as possible? Do you think the blog should cover this topic?

I freakin love fantasy footbal and I run about 2 to 3 teams a season. I think fantasy football makes watching the NFL a heck of alot funner, because on top of following your favorite team; your also following the rest of the NFL. Get a bunch of friends to join a league, put up a entrance fee, play the season out. It will change the way you watch football, especially if you have the Sunday ticket!!!
Go Cowboys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 12-4 NFC East champs!!!!!
P.S. Crossing my fingers for Chavous
And hell yea the blog should cover this topic!
last one I promise…
As long as this blog isn’t flooded with FF stuff. Perhaps you could cover just the Dallas Cowboys players in relation to Fantasy Football. I would like this to remain my Dallas Cowboys home.
Connor,
I’m ambivalent on the two, because they really are apples and oranges, IMO. If you focus on FF, they you have to go there, whole hog. OTOH, people do play it. I just want to see how people use the team in their fandom.
I’ve been playing since the 1993 season and the number of leagues I participate in varies year-to-year, last year just two plus a Yahoo! pick ‘em league. I usually play in three or four and it has been as many as six (plus pick ‘em). My buds play in about that many still, a couple still with a notebook and box scores. I forsook those with the proliferation of the Internet.
My very first draft was Cowboys heavy because they were all I knew intimately. I drew first pick in that twelve-man league and selected Emmitt and several Cowboys thereafter. I finished last as I recall. It taught me to learn and to trust players from almost every team and I’ve won several league championships as a result. But, I tend to go with high prospects for the set-up I’m playing in and relish those picks where I think Cowboys fit in well with the scoring scheme. Last year I drafted Witten and Julius and won both leagues. The only player I’ve never had and refuse to take is TO, despite his numbers.
I think it would be cool if fantasy was a topic of discussion, I don’t know that I’d want it to dominate the coversation though. I think it would way cool if you and Raul had the capability to produce and facilitate a fantasy game for the bloggers here. If you do, let me know, I may be able to help out with some ideas and stuff.
by the way, what does IMO and OTOH mean???
IMO - In My opinion
OTOH - On The Other Hand
I usually run 2 teams a year. I have finished in the top 2 with every team for the last 3 years. I follow these simple instructions:
Draft no Eagles, Redskins, or Giants players. No matter how tempting, don’t do it. I left TO on the board last year with my 2nd pick. Everyone thought I was crazy, sure he wil score a lot of points, but I don’t want to root for that SOB. So, draft players you like using a liitle common sense. I can’t wait to actually draft a cowboy this year. We haven’t exactly had a lot of candidates over the last few years. Go witten.
It doesnt have to flood the blog, but we could have an whos, hot whos not, and also discuss the value of the fantasy worthy cowboys like, JJ, J witten, keyshawn, glenn, Morgan (hopefully a sleeper). And could be an intresting topic for many fans, when there is nothing to report on or write about.
Go Boyz
All the mainstream sites are covering it and hosting it. Why not.
I have not competed in a Fantasy League. Although I pick games at CBS Sportsline among friends with a prize at the end of the year. You have to beat the spread which makes it very interesting.
I would have a hard time rooting for players that did not have stars on their helmets but like Josh’s plan of never picking a Giant, Redskin or Eagle. Fantasy football is all the rage though, and all the usual spots where I enjoy a Cowboys Game and a beer or two have leagues and drafts and sponsor several Fantasy Leagues……….Football Leagues….i do not hear much talk of any others.
WITTEN OR JJ ARE THE TOP PICKUPS FROM DALLAS. THEY ARE STARTERS IN ANY LEAGUE. Witten singlehandedly beat the top ranked undefeated team in my leage last year after being down by 30pts. 30pts for a TE is crazy!
MADDEN on Playstation takes up most of my time.
Go Cowboys!! Other teams will be scared of us in the PLAYOFFS next year.
And GO SPURS!!!
McQuarters was released by Bears………can play CB and S…….interesting prospect. Not sure what kind of money he would cost.
Hey Rafael,
I want to commend you on a great site. This place is absolutely fantastic for Cowboys fans!
I’ve been playing in a fantasy league since 1996. I’ve learned the hard way not to draft Cowboys too early (unless they warrant it). I always pick up some Cowboys near the end of the draft–hey, all other things being equal! I really dont’ think you could talk very much fantasy here without diluting the site, except for how Cowboys might do in each week’s upcoming games. That actually could be interesting and fun for Cowboys fans!
One quick addendum: when I say discuss how Cowboys might do as fantasy players, I mean maybe you and others giving a stats projection for the Cowboys players. Could be interesting to see who is most accurate…
On a downside of Fantasy Football. I have met fans with no Team, just players. They root for the player regardless of the outcome of the team or the game. This is probably the biggest downfall of Fantasy Football based on STATS.
Often times the stats do not tell the whole story. There have been
a few players in all sports that were Statistical wonders but were duds when it came to crunch time or winning…….or their teammates.
For this example I will use Baseball and Wade Boggs, who sat out the final few games of the season to win a batting title. If he sat, there was no statistical way for his opponent to win, Don Mattingly……….meanwhile Mattingly played regardless of his stats or a title. While Boggs was a great player, his sitting out to win a title left a bad taste with me and many others. What kind of title comes at the expense of your team winning games. I mean this is baseball not football where resting into the playoffs might benefit the team.
I mentioned in a previous post the formula to my fantasy success. I did leave out one very important detail. I never draft players from the other NFC East teams. I will also never start any player who is against the cowboys that week. My league mates think I’m nuts, but it has worked very well. Never upset the Cowboy gods! I have benched the likes of Manning, Harrison, Moss, and Duece over the years.
Josh,
I like your philosophy, and while I have not played FF in about three years, I did really well running a variant of what you said. I would not draft players from teams I didn’t like. In the
mid and late ’90s that also meant passing up a lot of ‘Niners, but what the hey, when its your team, you have to be able to love it.
Thanks for a great fan site!!Fantasy Football can be great fun, but it also can be dissapointing if you bias twoards other teams…I would never suggest having too many players from the same position on the same team… Like for instance drafting Terry Glenn and KJ and starting them both.. One will most likely outshine the other and it will cost you points… I never bias teams, not even other’s in the NFC East! I am a die Hard Cowboys fan since I was in diapers..TTOTMIT! In fantasy football, points are points no matter, who you hate or what teams you dislike, pick the player that you know is going to produce no matter from which team… winning is winning and in fantasy football picking the best will benefit you greatly… that is untill the playoffs and the good starters are on the bench that week…. try to get good players for both starters, and backup. I think the Blog should continue to cover this topic, it is always good to know our competition!
Rafael,
What do you mean by asking if the blog should cover this topic? Do you want to know if we consider it worth general conversation, as in this thread, or to serve as a prospectus for fantasy play? If the former then I say yes while times are slow. If the latter, you would also have to discuss every other team in the league to be of any value. I love the focus of this site, the Cowboys, about whom information is already in free exchange. It would be up to the fantasy player to determine its reliability for fantasy gaming.
If during the season your intention is to discuss the Cowboys’ upcoming games, head-to-head match ups or certain player’s potential for a breakout performance, then that will be all the discussion necessary. You should devote your resources to fantasy advice only if you also intend to have a fantasy game component to this site. And I would dislike it if all conversations dwindled down to posts like: “Dude, should I start Peyton Manning this week against New England or Drew Bledsoe against Philly?â€Â
I have been playing FF for as long as it has been out remember the old Miller Lite football handbooks back around 1989 or so. I too drafted heavily on Cowboys that 1st year and lost. But I have learned to balance things out between being a big Cowboy fan and drafting the best player on the board the that is not from the NFC east or B.O. ( TO ). That being said I have done very well in a 8-15 player league year after year. Fastany Football is great but I like the blog the way it is other than given Cowboy player status.
off topic, but the boys should definitely work out McQuarters and find out his asking price.
FF topics would be great. I’d love to read your insight into the world of FF. I generally run three or more teams, and I’ve been killed by Dallas heavy drafts in the beginning, as well.
As much love as I have for my ‘Boys, I’m an NFL junkie in general. FF is just another excuse to follow what’s going on around the league and keep my finger on the pulse of all things not Cowboys related. And I have to agree wholeheartedly with an earlier poster that said playing FF makes NFL Sunday Ticket much more enjoyable/worthwhile.
The Fantasy-Ticket connection is true! Keeping a pulse on the whole league makes the NFL a much more enjoyable product and heightens my appreciation for the game. Plus, being more knowledgeable about players entering free agency makes following the off season and the prospects for the Cowboys, more exciting.
Vinny bailed me out of a few tough fantasy spots over the years, so I was glad when we got him. It didn’t work out the way I’d hoped, but it wasn’t his fault entirely. I’ve had Anthony Henry before too. I’m glad he’s on our team and I’m eager for him to flourish under the Star. I felt the same with Glover, still do. I could go on. Fantasy participation has only bolstered my devotion to the Cowboys, it has not diminished it in any way.
StarStruck speaks the truth, and he hits on all my points, but he has a better way with words.
does anybody know of any free FF sites. i have been looking to get into it, but im not a real bug fan of paying for stuff like this, i just wanna have fun and winning money isnt my priority. i kno this isnt ther best philosophy, but hey… any suggestions??
Yahoo! has free and pay leagues. I too prefer free games because I usually play so many and it’s not about money or prizes for me either. The free games have limitations, obviously, but Yahoo’s offer pretty flexible set-ups and scoring parameters compared to some other sites, like cbs sportsline. Yahoo! is my favorite so far. I would like to hear about other free sites, I haven’t looked for them in a long time now.
That is a very interesting take on FF, I never really thought about it much. Generally watching and concentrating on the Cowboys and then whatever other game might be on later, with much less attention to the teams and the players. I knew very little about Henry, until he was an FA. I can see where Fantasy would definitely make you look all over the league. I also do not really know as much about the college game except for local teams in Virginia, and the ACC. I watch the big bowl games but often times that does not give you a true picture of the teams. Obviously, OU was blown out by USC. However, the NFL called OU Players Early and Often in the Draft. After the draft, I lose track of most unless I have been watching a kid locally or in college like a Michael Vick, Ronald Curry, Dre Bly or any of the other talent coming out of Hampton Roads.
Jon,
Which HS did Dre Bly go to? I know he went to UNC, but either I was unaware or forgot that he was from the Hampton area. I’ve been looking to ask someone, what are you guys putting in the water down there? The Vicks, Curry, Shawn Moore, Allen Iverson, Bruce Smith, the beat goes on…
FF is really fun stuff, in my first league last year and didn’t know what to expect by the end of it I was looking for more and was a much better student of the game because of it. Had one of my backs bust “Q griffin” out of Denver, someone cut Julius and he was just sitting in the pool signed him up three games before the ravens, and got him in there just in time, he carried me through the playoffs, him and alexander carried the load for my team, especially j.j. in that seattle game chicago game and giants game. sweet stuff,
I will take him as soon as possible if available only this time I don’t think I’ll be as lucky to find him in the FA pool
ESPN will also have free FF this year
I love FF but lets keep this site about the actual football team.
Starstruck,
Yeah not sure if it is in the water or not. The number of super star atheletes that have come out of Hampton Roads is unbelievable.
Dre Bly is from Chesapeake, Deep Creek.
Look out for a whole bunch of talent from Landstown, at the beach they are just head shoulders above everybody else. Hampton is a perennial power house and USA TODAY loves them. I hate their Coach, but respect their record.
Hampton Roads is significantly larger than Richmond area. We are over 1.5 million now from Williamsburg to Va Beach. Lots of talent on the Peninsula with Curry, Vick, Iverson, Kirby, Slade, Al Toon, Dwight Stephenson, Larry Bethea, and a bunch more………Curry got all the press in High School but lots of folks were saying Vick was the better QB. I think Ronald messed up by going to UNC. He would have done better at UVA. They have a better offense for a QB, he wanted to go to Jordan’s school and play hoops. But UVA let Kirby play both, and other players. They just make you commit to one or the other. Then get on the court for basketball later. Ronald Curry can absolutely chuck the ball and has speed. He just never stayed healthy or had support at UNC. I mean the guy is playing WR for the Raiders. He is obviously a phenomenal athelete. I am surprised Norv Turner does not look at him at QB. He is just raw, he never had any coaching to play QB. He would have done better at UVA. I am not a big Cavaliers Fan, but always pull for our state teams. Still they have produced some pretty good QBs. Matt Blundin, Schuab, and that kid in NO which surprised me. I was never all that impressed with him in College. Of course the book is still out on him.
Please no. Pretty please, no fantasy football.
There is entirely too much available in other forums. Keep it Cowboys!
No FF unless its in its own section of the site.I am personally sick of the impact
FF has had on the ticker that runs on the screen…..it takes hours just to get a
friggin score after all the stats go by.You guys got where you are because
you keep it simple…. just about them Boys!!
i agree with you who are against it….100%
I’m a newbie to this blog but it’s one of the best with some of the most interesting posts of any. Of course, it has to be given that the everyone involved is a Cowboys fan. Regarding FF, I have enjoyed it for the past few years. I too like it because it improves my appreciation of the NFL in general and gives you more of the mindset of a coach. Because of FF, I know more about the strengths and weaknesses of all the teams, who is injured, bench strength, etc. One other point: it is easy not to draft other NFC east team members also, because they all stink anyway.
Becker, you probably dont play FF do you. if you did you wouldnt say your sick of the ticker, you would be happy with it. Have patience cause your stuck with it. I cant wait till June 1st and the next blog posting. Go Boyzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
I love this blog because its about the cowboys. I’d strongly prefer that blog talk stay out of the blog.
I played FF last year and will do so again this year.
I have played for the last 5 out of 7 years. Every Year I played I was the commish!
Looking for one in the Phoeinix area ??????
05-06
Cowboys number 4th ranked Defense - Williams will be a mad man 8 to 9 sacks!!
Cowboys number 7th ranked Offense - Keyshawn will earn his star and reputation as a STAR PLAYER
OHH yeah :-)
Jon
Hampton and Phoebus are both powerhouses, I watched Phoebus win the state championship game a couple of seasons ago and they were impressive. NFLHS.com ranks “Hampton, VA” 18th in the nation with 671 all-time wins (1920-2003). I am aware of Landstown, Oscar Smith and Deep Creek too. All strong programs.
I don’t know about the water either, but apparently one gene pool is athletically endowed. As memory serves, aren’t Shawn Moore and Iverson cousins who battled one another as QBs for rival schools? And I think Aaron Brooks is a cousin of theirs too. I’m not sure if or how the Vicks or Curry fits in there, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they did.
I was angry that Curry snubbed UVA for UNC, and I wished ill upon him each time they played one another. The mistake for him was in the way it went down (making a verbal commitment) and ultimately, where he went. George Welsh put a good, winning program in place in Charlottesville, it’s hard to say how Curry would have done there, but hopes were high until he reneged. Now, I wish the guy all the best luck. He really impressed me last season playing WR (although, I drafted Jerry Porter on my FF team as the break-out Raider, not Ronald–a little karmic expression there, I guess). He might be too far removed from QB mechanics to go back but it would be an interesting experiment. I doubt he would want to considering he can immediately start at, albeit third, WR. He would be a project at QB and for the immediate future, a back up. Which, as I recall, is a part of the UVA story.
As far as populations, it’s an odd comparison between Richmond Metro and Tidewater. Richmond is probably counted by the Census Bureau as the city and the two counties immediately surrounding it, for around 720k people. Tidewater, as you point out, encompasses a larger area, not quite to Williamsburg according to the CB, but: VA Beach, Norfolk, Hampton, Newport News and Portsmouth. The latter four at about 670k, are a close comparison to the Richmond area population. When you add VA Beach though, forget about it, that pushes the region’s number to well over one million. I wouldn’t be surprised if your 1.5 mark is on target. For this discussion, I’d include Chesapeake.
The Richmond area produces some talent too, currently: James Farrior, Darren Sharper, Jamie Sharper, Shawn Barber, William Henderson, Rudi Johnson, Zuriel Smith, WR David Terrell, and a few others. Interestingly (probably only to us or just me), last season Tidewater had 15 players in the NFL, including one from Toano, and Richmond Metro (which I’ll expand to include nearby Ashland, Petersburg & Hopewell) had 13, the rest of the state had 18, for 46 in all, two were Cowboys (Julius and Devone Claybrooks). For comparison the entire state of New York had 31, NYC’s eight-million people (vs. VA’s seven) producing about 15 of them. 1.5 mil to 8 mil: You sure it’s not the water?
Check it out @ http://www.nflhs.com/News/HometownReports/summary.asp?chrStateID=VA&playerType=ProPlayers&position=All
everybody on the rosterwill be better than last year so who cares! its easy to pick players’ now pick the team. Im asking it now, so nuckle up if ur ready…Whats the 05 record? I SAY, 10 AND 6
Please tell me im not on an island here. I love my boys and have since i was a toddler( im 32 ) i have loved watching ur comments, but im bored so lets hear some predicts, lets cut the bs here and cut to the chase i wanna hear some early predictions ( again 10 and 6 )
I think we start 2-4 with wins against washington and SF then beat Seatle and Arizona to go 4-4 into the bye week. I think we can beat the eagles in our second meating coming out of a bye to go 5-4 taking our next loss against the chiefs and washington back to back to go 8-6 then we beat the panthers to go 9-6 and lose to the rams to end at 9-7.
I’m counting on a slow start with our defense being so young with the rookies and losing coakley but think they will step it up before the bye week gets here. Bledsoe will do great but also feel he will take a week or two of real game time to get in the groove, asuming they don’t play him much in the pre-season. I generally try to look at all the games objectively even though I’m a die hard cowboys fan so thats another reason I called a few loses in their I think will be close.
My other prediction is the Eagles barely winning the division at 10-6 for their last year in the limelight cause here come the boys.
Feel free to flame I know I have us losing some very winnable teams while beating some harder teams, but I feel we will have a hard time stopping certain players with some young guys on defense until they have a year under their belt.
I don’t know guys, I was looking at the schedule and I think we can go 11-5 which will win the NFC east
Alds,
I have played FF and I have no problem with it or people who do .I just think
for this blog as it is set up , it is not a good idea. These threads tend to get off topic now imagine during the season and with FF it will be a mess.If FF has a separate premanent threadin this blog I think it would be fine.
As for the ticker… the scores yes but spare me the Rb stats in the 1st Qtr ok?
It is not revelant even for FF until the gun sounds!!
Star,
Aaron Brooks and Mike Vick are first cousins, both went to Warwick.
Hampton is the perennial powerhouse in the entire state, and country, but the coach recruits kids when they are 8,9 and 10. Tells their parents to move in the Hampton High area. However, he has a great record on the field, his off field and antics are more than most around here care to take. Including his own Alumni. He once had his players taunting an injured player. That is unacceptable at any level, but should have been punished at the High School level.
Shawn Moore I honestly do not remember, the UVA QB I thought he was older. I remember Moore to Moore, that about the Kirby Slade era wasn’t it. Allen Iverson went to Bethel until Jail……..He won Football and Basketball state Championships in the same year and was thought better on the football field than basketball. Starred at QB and DB, and I project him as a CB in the NFL. With his speed, and tenacity he would have been a pro bowl corner.
I watched a lot of Kirby and Slade when they were both at Tabb High. A AA School that beat Hampton a AAA that year. Although Hampton won the AAA State Championship that year, Tabb could not win the AA. Funny, Kirby and Slade were the best High School Football players I have ever seen. Kirby won High School, Football, and Basketball honors. He was a phenomenal athelete. Neither one of them ever left the field in a High School Game. Kirby played RB, S, Slade was a TE, DE. If you are a UVA fan, you will probably agree Kirby was a Heisman hopeful before the broken leg. Slade was a Parcells pick in NE. My high school produced Qwame Lassiter, a CB for Arizona I think he is still playing somewhere, and Al Toon earlier. Toon was cut short by concussions, he did not even play High School football til his Junior Year. Was a Track Star at Wisconsin also. Great Athelete. Kirby had some good years as a pro, but never really found a team to fit him in as either a feature back or that utility guy. He could do it all.
I grew up on the Peninsula. Williamsburg is always included in the word Peninsula but gets left out of some of the Hampton Roads talk. The long stretch between Williamsburg and Richmond usually leaves Williamsburg in the Hampton Roads Region, but the snoots up there sometimes think of themselves as exclusive. However, our regional fairs and festivals include them, and their High School plays in the Peninsula District, or at least it did. Lafayette which is where Lawrence Taylor went to High School.
I went to a bunch of UR games last year. A family friend was a 5th year Senior. He managed a TD against W&M in a loss to Lang Campbell. Who I think is an NFL player one day. Which is why I am hopeful on ROMO also. Lang played the likes of UVA, Maryland, NC State in his career and lit them all up. Despite their having a much better overall team than his own. He can chuck it. There a quite a few kids playing on both those teams from the state as well.
This area is also a wrestling, soccer, and on the womens side field hockey mecca. Most of my high schools best atheletes were wrestlers. Great Bridge, Cox and Menchville high school are perennial power houses. The number of players that fill up UVA and VA Tech rosters is incredible. Unfortunately some escape to Miami, FSU and UNC to name a few.
Patrick Henry up there is always tough. I saw them beat up a pretty good deep creek team ten years ago or so for states. They have the big offensive and defensive corn fed farm boys that we lack down here. That is the one missing ingredient in our mix. We rarely have those big lineman. Although Brandon Noble is a First Colonial grad. We seem to produce a lot of speed skill guys though on both sides of the ball.
Redskins sign Cory Hall….GREAT! I hope BP makes a mental note of that and remembers that Hall ran a pitifull 4.8 4.9 (Lineman 40’s) when we play them this year and sends Terry Glenn (4.38) right past old leadfoot…:)
I just recently stumbled onto this blog and think it is great. You have a lot of well-informed, positive articulate blogsters talking about exactly the thing that interest me the most–the fate of the Cowboys. I just moved to Ohio from Dallas and have been wandering in a football-info arid wasteland for lo these past months. Can you believe that people up here actually care about what happens to the Browns and the Bengals:)
Anyway, as I said, the content and structure of this blog are first class. The focus is completely on Da Boys. Fantacy Football fans are entitled to a forum where they can exchange info related to their interests—BUT (you could see that but coming from a mile away couldn’t you)–I would hate to see the focus diluted from the core concentration that makes this a great site. I say start another blog dedicated to FF if such a forum is desired. That way both groups of fans are able to communicate on their primary thread of interest.
Bonzer
I know there are a couple regulars on here from Columbus.
You will find Cowboys fans all over. I visit Ohio regularly and yeah mostly Browns fans, but a few Bengals fan. But give em credit in Ohio, FOOTBALL is KING!!!!
Love it can’t get enough of it…3 teams a year. Live drafts a must. Hopefully Yahoo will still offer a free games.
Ps, Would you consider adding http://www.cowboys-forum.com to your related Cowboys links?
Im glad to hear the predicts im hearing, they fall in line w/what im thinking. Ten and sixish. Nine and seven if they are slow starting, eleven and five if things go well.
Fantasy Football = cocaine addiction.
Just say “no” to the crackpipe.
derrick, you pick your poison, I’ll pick mine…but thanks for your concern.
Jon
Upon further review, Shawn Moore did precede Allen Iverson by four years and the rivalry I was thinking of was between A.I. and Brooks (who is second cousins with Vick according to his bio). Shawn Moore is in fact from Martinsville, far from your water source. My bad.
Shawn Moore & Herman Moore led UVA to their only national #1 ranking during the 1990 season, the high-water mark of the Welsh era. Kirby and Slade were sophomores on that team as I recall. I had season tickets but it’s all a blur now. Shawn set several records which stand today except those broken or matched by Brooks. Shawn was drafted by Denver in the 11th round of the 19991 draft and he spent a couple of years backing up Elway but never really materialized in the NFL. Detroit made Herman the 10th selection, also making him the prime beneficiary of the Moore-to-Moore connection.
Keeping it Cowboys, Dallas selected Russell Maryland and Alvin Harper 1st and 12th respectively in that draft. And for fantasy, imagine if the Lions had taken Harper instead, allowing Herman to slip to the Cowboys’ at 12. We may have had two HOF receivers in that dynasty. If Jerry could have afforded keeping them.
Just a quick update. Cory Hall, who signed with the skins 2 days ago, requested he be released. The skins released the guy.
Star,
I was very familiar with Kirby and Slade. I graduated the same year as they did, albeit from another High School on the peninsula. I had cousins and friends that went to Tabb and York. They both should have been sophomores. They were both playing quite a bit too. Moore to Moore was sweet. But UVA choked. They definitely had the most talented team in the country that year. They just could not finish it. I remember Shawn Moore had an hand injury, but still they should have gone undefeated. There was a lot of talent on both sides of that football team. I had rooted for both UVA and Tech growing up in Va, but while in College at ODU went to Blacksburg a lot more. I still pull for both teams in Bowls, but prefer Tech.
Both teams continue to have great players from all over our state. I was always disappointed with ODU not having football. Although they still talk about it. You could stock a top 20 College Football team, just from the Hampton Roads area. If all the talent from the state went to one school for three or four years straight they could win a National Championship.
Josh
KFFL.com reported recently that Hall had an opportunity to take a coaching position prior to signing in D.C. and then that he retired to pursue it. Either way, he’s off the radar.
Jon
Ouch! You cut me to the quick with your talk of collapses past and Tech preferences. I thought we had a kinship going on here and then you say something like that!
It’s cool. UVA has always been a coulda-shoulda story and that collapse epitomizes it. I remember vividly the deflation at the loss to GA Tech; Scottt Stadium went from roar to a whisper and so did the season. Kirby and Slade were very productive to the successes of that team and went on as you know, to have solid pro careers. They were the real deal, as was Herman.
I have friends and some (distant) family that went to Tech, it makes for great rivalry and I’m glad the schools represent the state well. My immediate family is UVA and I’m true to blue & orange. Al Groh will take them to the next level and bring home a national championship. I hope to see more UVA alumni earning stars in the coming years! Keep an eye on LB Ahmad Brooks and OT D’Brickashaw Ferguson this season, both promise to be first-round picks in the 2006 draft. While I would hope the Cowboys will not be in contention to take Brooks, who will rank highly if he come out as a junior, they may still have a need and a shot at Ferguson in the latter part of the round, if he slips that far. Notice how I expect Dallas to be picking in the bottom of the round?
Your ODU dream makes for good fantasy too! I often wonder why VCU doesn’t begin a football program. I know the start-up costs must be staggering but there’s a lot of revenue to be generated from it too. That school is taking over the city and is sinking tons of money into new facilitiesâ€â€a beautiful building for basketball, and revitalizing areas of urban blight. Maybe it is on the horizon but first things first. I’ve alway liked ODU’s logo!
Star,
No offense meant. I was rooting hard for the Cavs that year. Again, had Kirby not broken his leg, he was a legitimate Heisman Candidate. I feel kind of bad he never found a team in the pros that he was utilized properly. He could have been something special. Slade had a good career, I understand both are back in the area now and working with kids in football.
Didn’t Ga Tech with Bobby Ross go on to share National Title that year? I cannot remember. Moore to Moore was great, I think today Shawn Moore would get a longer look. I think there was still a stigma around black qbs back then. At least it looked like it. Moore sure knew how to throw it to Herman.
Since I hurt your feelings, I will remind you of my fondest UVA memory. Mike Groh at QB and the Cavaliers being the first ACC team to beat the Florida State Seminole. What a great game that was. And FSU was still a much better team. Wish Michael Vick could have worked a little more magic and beat them as well.
ODU started a football collection when I arrived on campus and I paid 100 bucks every semester for a team til the Title 9 or some other stupid NCAA Rule killed it. The funny thing is ODU has awesome womens teams, Field Hockey and Basketball have both won national championships. Women Sailing team, soccer and just about every other sport. It would be difficult for the University to put in a program as big or expensive as football. What a shame. Georgetown and VCU were other schools talked about as adding teams and playing each other. Meanwhile Christopher Newport managed to add football. It just depends on what you prioritize and athletics really are never the priority at ODU. We will be good in basketball again. Alex Loughton is the real deal. I think he makes it in the NBA. We lost to MSU but played them well and then they went a long way into the tourney. We could have had a nice run if we got past them. They were extremely athletic.
Having attended several UR games last year, there is little money in small football programs but the tailgating is just as fun!!!! Blacksburg and Charlottesville are a lot of fun to watch football. I used to attend the UVA games with a friend who had UNC Season tickets. I would wear blue and orange in a sea of carolina blue. It was more fun in Charlottesville, and nice of him to take me even though I rooted for VA. Back then UNC was the better team, but UVA still managed to win a few. George Welsh had just taken over the team. And was starting to turn them around. Thinking about it, UNC had Lawrence Taylor but I was not really paying attention to them.
Also very classy of UVA to get Va Tech in ACC. I know they were a big part of them moving in. It makes sense, too bad for the Big East to lose two powerful Football Teams like Tech and BC.
