Cowboys Complete Second Day Signings

Posted: July 29, 2005 @ 12:42 am

Dallas signed fourth round selections Marion Barber and Chris Canty on Thursday, meaning all five second day draft picks are now under contract.

The organization must feel some relief in signing Canty. The DL from Virginia had first round grades before he injured a knee last season. It was thought his agent might demand more than fourth round compensation.

Dallas still has not signed first day picks Demarcus Ware, Marcus Spears and Kevin Burnett.

This is probably not good. Spears going out to CA overweight and planning on explaining to Bill why the assigned weight is not reasonable.

    Uh oh.

Target weight “294 lbs”. Hopes to be approved for 300 or 305#
He’s “weak and sluggish at lower weight”.

Once again J. J. has brought up the “representation” of Merriman!

Any confirmation that Dan Campbell had an appendectomy and will miss 2 weeks? I thought I heard it on the Ticket.

I’ve always thought Spears would be better at 300 or so because of where he’s going to line up in the 3-4. I ain’t the coach, but I wouldn’t mind an explanation of BP’s reasoning here.

I knew we would not have all of our rooks report on time. Lo and behold, Ware did not accompany the team to Oxnard. He stayed at home in Atlanta. Hopefully we can get him signed by first practice.

I read somewhere that Cambell was sidelined with apendicitis.

Also, if that post about Campbell is true, that would just be “GREAT” news wouldn’t it? (please notice the sarcasm)

Its true, cambell out about two weeks. Do worry guys he will be back unless he turns in to Woodson, but i doubt it.

I don’t think Campbell will need many rep’s to knock the rust off.

The one that is gonna need all they practice they can get is Zimmer.

Book learning (tapes) about the 3-4 is not the same as having been there/done that.

Can’t wait! Just want to say “Go Cowboys”.

On Campbell - it sucks, but he’s an accomplished veteran who knows the offense and has the trust of the head coach. he’ll be fine.

On Ware - not good news. He needs the practice. He needs to bulk-up. He needs to play. I’m worried about how he’ll learn the outside LB position and how offenses will scheme to confuse him and take advantage of rookie mistakes.

On Spears - I’d love to know how conversations such as the one he’s planning to have with Bill generally play out. I can’t imagine Bill listens much nor does much other than tell hiim to shut-up and do as he’s told. Hopefully he’ll not pull a Manny Wright on the field.

On Burnett - don’t care. He’s not big enough for the 3-4, so I don’t even know why we drafted him… 2 time captain? So what. He’ll be no better than a steady player which isn’t an upgrade. I’d love to be more optimistic about Burnett, but won’t be until he shows something on game day.

I stand corrected, Ware did fly out to Oxnard separately, with his agent. This is a good sign that he WILL be signed before the first practice.

Update about Canty. On Dallas news .com It says they have agreed to terms with canty, but he hasn’t signed the contract yet. It’s in the article about Bill parcells having something to prove.

    Eric R on July 29th, 2005 7:43 pm

Did you all hear? ESPN is reporting that Parcells has expressed that he believes this team can go to the Super Bowl …. this year. Carl Banks has told ESPN that his old ball coach has told him such.

Parcells also stated that he has never said that the 3-4 would be used exclusively. DallasCowboys.com and most media outlets have been reporting that the Cowboys will play the majority of their defensive snaps in the 3-4, and have sure made it sound that the 4-3 is a thing of the past. Parcells made it very clear that both sets will be used. So remember every play in the 4-3 is one less play for Ellis and Glover in the 3-4.

    Eric Richard Says:

    July 12th, 2005 at 12:36 pm
He (Ellis) is too small!! He is too slow!! … Can any one tell me who has led the Cowboys in sacks 4 straight years? Just about every year he has played, he has led the team’s defensive linemen in tackles. …. Ellis’ size and speed should be a non issue, but for the fact that the Cowboys are switching to the 3-4 defense. He has been productive in the 4-3. It’s been the other players around him that have failed miserably. Ellis is absolutely too small to play every down in a 3-4 scheme, but Nick Eatman is feeding you all mumbo jumbo when he says Ellis is “undersized” for the 4-3. That would make half the DEs in the league undersized, including some of the better DEs like Berry, Kerney, Rice, Freeney, and KGB. ….. Like I had posted earlier, I doubt Dallas will go with a predominate 3-4 defense, but will use their flexability to match up against teams. Expect Ellis to play mostly in the 4-3 sets and Ware to come in and play in the 3-4 sets. Then Ware will at times relieve Spears in the 4-3, and Ellis will at times relieve Glover (at the DE spot) in the 3-4 sets. Do the math!! It will get all of his players the amount of playing time Parcells wants. But most of all it will allow Parcells to play to his players strengths!! Carson can give Ferguson a break, and then Canty will work into the rotation too.

    James on July 29th, 2005 7:46 pm

    Eric R,
You are right on that Eatman is full of crap. Ellis will probably be too small for the 3-4. But NOT too small for the 4-3. As you said: “who has led in sacks the last 4 year?”

    Cash on July 29th, 2005 8:10 pm

Eric if you think Ware is going to be playing DE in a 3-4 set you are more retarded than I first thought.

  21. 21
    Eric R on July 29th, 2005 8:54 pm

    Cash,

Learn to read! Where do I say Ware will play DE in the 3-4? .. he obviously will play LB. Replacing Ellis (DE) at the 4-3 with Ware (LB) in the 3-4, remember you lose 1 down lineman and gain a LB in the switch.

    mike on July 29th, 2005 9:52 pm

duuring parcells press conference he says that the 3-4 is the primary defense but if its not working he will not hesitate to go back to the 4-3. he knows if something isnt working to change it, so im not worried about to small stuff.

Yes, Eric, I’ve been saying that for a long time now… I think that every scheme, be it 4-3, 3-4, 4-6 and nickel packages, is vulnerable to good coaching and preparation, and right now, with every team being more aware and knowledgable of the things they need to do in this salary cap era, because arguable there’s better coaching going on now than before… So what right now functions is what the Pats do, the team that’s against them see so many different things that they can do on Offense and preparation becomes difficult and they might end seeing something else (Like Brad Childress Offensive Coord of the Beagles, I guess he wasn’t prepared to see the 2-5 Defense that Belichik and Crennel prepared). I guess that’s what Parcells tries to make and many sport writers are short sighted and can’t see that, he wants to have the luxury of having a Defense with many faces. When Zimmer says that his Defense is a 3-4, he’s saying what everyone wants to hear, that he’s going against his previous teachings because The ruler Tuna ruled so. Reality is, if they want to have different faces on Defense, his Defense needs to know how to play the 3-4, something that the majority of the staff hasn’t experienced. The 4-3 will come in his due time…

    Chandus,

I have been trying to convey the same point, but I have been critisized a bit. Ellis playing LB is a good possibility, because it gets Dallas’ best “football players” on the field. We all have to look for other things too. Perhaps Parcells with throw a curve ball with 3 safeties, 3 CBs, 2 LB, and 3 down linemen against a team that likes to use 3 and 4 WR sets. Davis could ball hawk the middle of the field and Beriault and Roy can sit back and punish crossing receivers. … The thing is, Parcells has the personel to change things up, and the luxury of staying with what is working. .. I have said for a while now that the two defenses will probably split about 50-50, because it will play to the players’ strengths, and get Parcells the percentages he wants for each player. Eventually, I do think that Parcells will go with the 3-4 more of the time, especially if he finds a roll for Ellis. That is exactly why TRYING Ellis at OLB or ILB during training camp would make a lot of sense. If Ellis can get a comfortable position in the 3-4, then and only then will Dallas have their 7 best, front line defenders on the field at the same time and Demarcus Ware lined up outside the OT. I think Parcells fully knows that if he can find a way to get Ware, Ellis, Glover, Ferguson, Spears, and Dat on the field together, all playing to their strengths, then that defense has the ability to be really good.
