Parcells Appears the Happiest Camper

Posted: July 30, 2005 @ 11:58 am

“I felt like I had to increase my energy level a lot. That’s what I attempted to do physically.” “I want to be able to stay on their ass every day. That’s the best way I can put it.”

– Bill Parcells at Friday’s press conference

When your head coach puts himself through a minicamp to prepare for the season you better not come with any lame excuses about your weight. Are you listening, Marcus Spears?

Bill Parcells greeted the press at Oxnard yesterday in perhaps the best shape of his coaching career, certainly of his time in Dallas. The coach has been running diligently and has lost weight. This should further diminish the talk we heard last January that Parcells was looking for a retirement seat at Saratoga racetrack. Big Bill looked at the disappointment of 2004 and included himself among the failures. He’s rededicated himself to the project at hand, and looks as eager as any rookie.

This is going to be fun, folks.

i seen where he signed too! he has some catching up to do. he needs to be in camp early. my understanding is that he is already there. and spears is in calf. as well. only ware is not in calf. i figure he will sign today. he is looking for the same kind of contract as roethlisberger got.

I read Burnett got a 5 year deal that could void to 4 years, with a signing bonus of 1.8 million. Also I read too that Larry missed the first practice and was the only Cowboy to fail the conditioning test. It said that he may be put on the PUP list, but it doesnt sound serious.

Not really. ESPN.com has an article hinting this could be the end of Allen’s career. I have no idea what really happened, but went to ESPN and the headline said “End of the Line? Cowboy’s Allen put on PUP”. I hope it is nothing this drastic and Larry will be back in a couple of days or a week or something. He is a huge part of our plan this year and I would be devestated if he lost him. I just dont understand how he go from being in the best shape of his life and maybe even moving to Tackle to not being able to pass a physical or conditioning test.

    Mike,

calm down bro, take a breath. LA is fine, he’ll be back on the field soon. Sounds like he got lazy over the last month. If Parcells isn’t concerned then neither am I.

The PUP works like this: Anyone can be put on it and removed from it at anytime up to August 30. After that, if they remain on PUP they MUST miss the first 6 weeks of the season. Before August 30, the team can put a guy on PUP and replace his roster spot with another player while still retaining the PUP player’s rights.

I also read the ESPN article. Consider the source. Let it go in one ear and out the other! LA will be fine.

I don’t know why every bodies flipping, It sounds like the boys might hit superbowl this year, you should be gearing up for a booty kicking season. Only one player out with a hundred more. So just love it up, I can’t wait to see us the superbowl!!!!! I’m confident about the roster this year, as long as they have a push forward offense and a wall for defense they will be awesome!!!!
    cowboys lover out

    James,

You are close on your description of the PUP, but I believe that getting placed on it is somewhat more restrictive. If I remember correctly, a player can only be placed on the PUP (Active) list at the start of training camp. That’s it. He can be removed at any time. If a player is still on PUP at the final cutdown, a decision must be made. If the player is healthy, of course, he can be placed on the final roster or cut. Otherwise, he can either be placed on PUP (Inactive) or IR. If placed on PUP (Inactive) the player must stay out for at least (I believe) 6 weeks. Of course, if he goes to IR, he is lost for the year.

That is what happened to Woodson last year. He was placed on PUP (Active) at the start of training camp. Then, at the final cutdown, he was placed on PUP (Inactive). Since he never got healthy enough to return to the field, he was placed on IR.

If a player could be placed on PUP at any time during training camp, you would see it used a lot more often to avoid losing a player for the entire year. The sole purpose of PUP is to protect teams who have players who were injured before camp started. Players who have already begun camp and become injured either have to remain on the roster until they are healthy or placed on IR. For instance, Sean Ryan is NOT eligible for placement on the PUP list. We are currently keeping his roster slot open. We have a couple of available roster slots, since Allen is on PUP and Campbell is on NFI (Non-Football Injury), which is similar to PUP. We just signed a camp body TE to take up one of those slots.

Got something to say?
