Line Items

The most encouraging news from camp after three days appears to be on the offensive line. Depth appears to be emerging. Word after Monday’s early practice is that LG Larry Allen will don pads and join the team Monday afternoon. The Cowboys will not require Allen to retake the test. The coaching staff feels Allen has lost enough excess weight and has improved his cardiovascular conditioning enough to practice. Allen’s absence gave Stephen Peterman three days of uninterrupted work at LG. The coaches praised Peterman’s work during the mini camps. His emergence was one reason Allen has been discussed as an option at RT, a position he has not played since 1994.

Allen will return to his recent spot at left guard. The Cowboys will continue to rotate players at RT. This morning Jacob Rogers got his turn there with the first team. We probably won’t know until the first preseason game if Dallas has somebody who can play right tackle with confidence.

Andre Gurode may be working his way out of Parcells’ doghouse. The former RG played his way out of the starting lineup last year and Parcells admitted the talented Gurode was an “enigma” whom he could not motivate easily. Today Parcells said that Gurode “is playing much better at center than he did at guard.” Gurode got a turn in the pivot with the first team, ahead of Al Johnson.

If there is one thing that makes me think that this team can go a long ways this year is that it is becoming a deep team. There is a lot of talent in this group. The Oline, Dline, Linebackers, running backs, even the secondary are pretty deep.

The biggest question marks are with the QB, the receivers, and now possibly the TEs. They are one or two injuries away from being a problem. If Bledsoe goes down, I am not confident that either Henson or Romo can hold the reigns. If we have the injuries to Johnson or Glenn then we’re hurting.

This might be a no brainer, because it is probably the same thing for most every team, but, I believe the success for the boys is based on avoiding the injury bug because the talent is there.

I personally think we are going to go toe-to-toe with Philly this year. It’s just too bad Roy cannot horsecollar a few more of their players this year. (I’m still bitter about the Michael Irvin injury :-) ) Philly deserves a good but kickin. I’d love to see the Cowboys become the more physical team, starting this year.

Kevin, I wouldnt go so far and say the secondary has depth. One or two injuries there and we could be in deep something.

    Cash:

Well, there’s much to read… that takes time, and I guess that some of us are busy doing non football related things so…

Other than that, I guess the two names that have called for my attention aren’t big names, there’s one that I’ve been defending for now some time, Thompson, his speed kills, if he learns the Offense and can pass protect he will be in the lineup, I wouldn’t believe Parcells passing on him if he can do those things. The other is Kenyon Coleman, the guy might not make a sack in the 3-4, but it sure sounds like he hasn’t been pushed back, and that’s a plus, the OLB can make the sacks if he isn’t pushed…

Other than that, the receivers do as we should expect… In the OLine and DLine everything looks like a depth that we haven’t had for a long time and I hope Beriault keeps doing what he’s been doing and we have the FS we obviously need.

Gentlemen, we don’t live in a perfect world, hence, the CBs will have to make due with what is on the roster. Having said that, we will be find at WR, CB, QB and all other positions as well. Starting with the end of last season, BP committed his self and his action to a winning game plan. Take a hard look at the roster and compare it to last year and quite frankly any other team. Yes I know, “good on paper”. Trust me when I tell you this paper will translate to on field actions. Let’s not cry wolf just yet and give BP the opp he so richly deserves. He will right this ship.

Oh yeah, I have fifty yard tickets for the MNF on sep 11 against the skins. My first game ever. Was too busy in the military (20 years and yes retired). I am so excited, so MIKE I know how you feel. I hope your game is a game to remember.

Rafael, we are fortunate you will be in Oxnard to give us some real reports. For example, The Ranch Report, Cowboys Plus, NFL, ESPN, Football.com, Dallas Cowboys MVN, The Cowboy Roundup, Foxsports.com, and etc etc etc. They all are reporting on the same thing, spin information from BP’s press conferences. How many ways can they say the same thing? With the monies these columnists are making you think they’re do a better job.

    Go Rafael.

    Cash,
As Chandus said, now that camp is in full swing; there is much more material to read. I think that most of us would like to be as informed as possible before we open our pie holes. Chandus is also correct that, so far, things are looking good for both Thompson and Coleman. Coleman would be a big surprise given his past performance. From what I’ve seen so far, things are not looking to hot for Henson. Romo might get it after all. Which would explain the contract he recieved last spring.

Nice lineup….I doubt they will carry 10 O-linemen which would give them an extra spot for RB or WR.

    Derrick,
True, Thompson and Ratliff would not clear waivers. Good list, although I would change a few of the backups.

    mike on August 2nd, 2005 11:31 pm

ratliff is a guy ive heard nothing on. ive been reading everyhting i can find and ive heard nothing, maybe thats a good thing?

  24. 24
    James on August 2nd, 2005 11:34 pm

Also, unfortuneately, I would have to agree with Trey about them not keeping nine instead of 10 OL. In a perfect world those would be the logical backups for all 5 starters on OL.

  25. 25
    Tony on August 3rd, 2005 12:48 am

I did not see A-Train on the list. Also, apparently Ratliff is doing pretty well. He has been all over the place including tight end. I believe the staff likes him.

    Eric R. on August 3rd, 2005 7:29 am

    Derrick,

    Close!!

Have to agree with Trey, and only 9 O-lineman make it.

Also, I think that some versatile players like Ratliff are going to save Parcells some roster spots. He could end up being the 3rd TE, especially if Ryan’s injury doesn’t allow him to participate in training camp.

Beating the same drum, but Ellis could see time at LB to save a roster spot there too.

As for my bubble guy, I am taking a long shot, but I believe that Mike Goolsby will find a way onto the roster. Once the team starts working on special teams he will catch Parcells’ eye. I have compared Goolsby to Kennith Gant, and I just think he can be to this team what Gant “the shark” was to the Cowboys teams of the early 90s. A CATALYST!!If Goolsby can be that guy on special teams then, Parcells can move Keith Davis into the starting FS position, or possibly the two can play together on special teams, the way Beriault is coming on.

gant was awesome dancing right before kickoffs, ahhhh the memories.

    Cash on August 4th, 2005 12:35 am

Parcells says Tucker has made one mental error so far the entire camp. May be Noll standing holding the towel when this all shakes out. I think he would be the easiest to move to the practice squad at the end of the day.

  29. 29
    Chandus on August 4th, 2005 12:54 am

Yeah, Cash, that’s what they say, but they’re also saying that in the last 2 days Rogers has been the starter pushing him and Vollers to the second team. Everything’s starting to shape like Torrin Tucker might be one of the first guys fired… Vollers has a huge plus, can play 2 tackle positions and Left Guard.

  30. 30
    James on August 4th, 2005 9:39 am

If The ‘Boys keep 9 OL, Tucker will not be in the mix.

you can tell bp wants versatility at every ol position.

Ok, I have an issue maybe you guys can help clear up. As I understand it, Chris Canty has had surgery for a seperated retina. Two big problems crop up with this sort of injury. The first, if it tears it again, further surgery would likely not be an option; loss of sight becomes permanent. Second, a reatatched retina is often seperated by SNEAZEING. I would think professional football would be a bit more strenuous. Does anyone know if I am in error? I would like to be. Could Canty still contribute if he lost permanent sight out of one eye? And if he could play, would he have an eye-patch? (I could joke about a cool nickname, but that would be a bit morbid, I think.)

  33. 33
    BlueCheese on August 4th, 2005 11:25 am

    Mojo,

Sugar Ray Leonard went back to boxing after a detached retina.

  34. 34
    mike on August 4th, 2005 12:49 pm

if you can box you can deffinetely play football. in an article about it i think it was lacewell you had a dtached retina as well, and he had it fixed and inproved his eye sight. i think it was lacewell, thats why they took a chance on canty.

  35. 35
    Chandus on August 5th, 2005 12:58 am

    Mojo:

Since the last surgery, which I think was in May, Canty’s progress has been monitored with visits to the doctor that performed the operation, his eye has progressed and now, he’s taking part in one-on-one drills, in one he was pushed in a big way by Larry Allen, and his retina could sustain that, I guess he’s nearly ready…

BTW, Canty hasn’t recovered his vision totally, last comments I’ve heard is that they expect a full recovery by next year, and of course, can play with a limited vision.

    Mojo,
We still may have. Can’t say for sure until he makes it through an entire season with no degradation in his knee or eye.

Got something to say?
