You Make the Cuts

Posted: August 23, 2005 @ 10:56 pm

You’re the GM. The first league-mandated cut down is August 30th, one week from today and three days after the Texans game this Saturday. You’ve got time.

But Houston represents the third pre-season game. This is usually the exhibition most teams take the most seriously. The one treated as a “dress rehearsal” for the season. The one where the coaching staffs trot out a legit, if stripped down, game plan. The one where the starters get to play around three quarters.

If there are any sure cuts to be made, it makes little sense to keep those guys around until next week. Bill Parcells has already hinted that he may “thin the roster” this week. (Scroll down to bottom.)

You’re the GM. Is there anybody who has already, without question, failed the audition? Is there anyone you would cut tomorrow?

is Keylon Kincade still a Cowboy if so why…….with Julius, Barber, Thomas, Thompson and Polite all trying to make the team………..I think we can say good bye to Kincade.

BTW on NFL.com Phil Simms had already picked Demarcus Ware as a rookie to watch. But makes some glowing comments about his favorite rookie on the website. You think he recognizes the next LT when he sees him. He says he saw him play at TROY last year and just said there is something definitley different and special about this kid. He also said the first 10 players taken in the draft may all regret passing on Ware and did not expect him to last until the number 11 pick. Who knows maybe Demarcus Ware not Chris Canty was the steal of the draft even though he went eleventh overall.

I don’t show Kincade on the roster but don’t remember his exit(or him being here, really).

Time to get Rogers off the roster as well-Either IR or injury settle. On DC.com they said the “the Cowboys decided he should have season ending surgery” That sounds like a spin job conflicting with the statements I heard from Jerry.

How about Lenny Williams-Has he done something that has escaped me?

    Otherwise I’m onboard with Sharkz

The last time Dallas picked 11th they got a guy who was rated much higher by many teams. A guy the Cowboys had at the top of their board.

    Some guy named Irvin.

It’s way too early to tell if Ware will be in that class, but I could stand lightning striking twice.

    Chandus on August 24th, 2005 12:20 am

Kincade was in the game, I saw him on the bench. He will be among the first guys being cut.

Another guy is Van Hoy, he’s just a body on the DLine.

Sharqz mentioned the most probable ones… Lenny Williams is third stringer and played on monday. Don’t know if Parcells knows what Frazier’s got, and he wants to see what everyone else has…

    Derrick,
An excellent list. It is too bad there is not room for some skilled new guys like (Pepper)Johnson, but we seem to count to 53 very quickly. I guess it is a nice place to be to have to cut loose some talented players because you have so many. I agree that A-Train should go. In order to keep him we would probably have to get rid of Polite. Bill P. does place a premium on running backs. I believe the next game will tell the tale. If A-Train can get something done, he probably will stay. Polite’s TD did not hurt his cause. It will be interesting. Thanks for a good post.

    Rafael,

They say lightning never strikes the same place twice. That’s definitely not true because I got hit in the head all three times!

I think Ware makes the team-LOL (it’s one thing when they compare him to LT, but when the coach lines him up like LT…and he kind of plays like……whew).

Kind of hard to make a list when other teams still have players that might make the Cowboys roster. Remember B.P. is always scouring the waiver wire. I think we could use another receiver (Doug Gabriel, Oak Raiders trade anyone?) and a real right tackle. hard to believe we once had Oliver Ross and let him go. Also I’d definetly cut Drew Henson and try and bring in someone else. My chart would be to keep:
    3 Qb’s
    3-4 Rb’s
    1 Fb
    Not more than 3 Te’s
    5-6 Wr’s
10 - 12 OL (Although with what we have now, I would keep less than 10)
    8 DL’s
    7 Lb’s
    5-6 Cb’s
    4 (F)&(S)S’s
    1 Kicker
1 Punter (MacBriar is a keeper)

Oliver Ross did very little with us. Sometimes that happens. I really hate losing good young guys but that is the way it is. Johnson- he MIGHT be safe on the practice squad- depends if he plays the next game and does something.

Before Saturdays’s game comes and goes, I will offer these names for banishment: Tucker, Morgan, Henson, Kincade, Dantzler, Rogers, Reese, and Barnes. I expect 5-6 cuts before the game and the rest after, although TunaMan might wait till after because of the quick turnaround for the 4th game next Thursday.

    Derrick on August 24th, 2005 9:11 am

    Don,

Who are you going to put in place as the backup at free safety, if not Lynn Scott. Reese, Danzler, thats all we have. Danzler will probably be cut this week, Reese has shown nothing at all, so unless your going to make a trade, there isn’t much out there to bring in. Scott is not flashy, but he’s never out of position, is a good tackler and special teams player.

Walter is a valuable guy because he can play all three positions on the line. He’s not the answer to be a long term starter, but he’s a quality guy that can fill in as a spot starter incase of injury.

What are you going to do for a backup tackle if you dont keep Vollers, who can play both sides. We have Rogers on IR, Petitti,a LT, who is a rookie playing a new position,Tucker who seems to make the same mistakes every game, shows up out of shape to camp and only plays RT, so who else are you going to bring in at backup right now, unless to make a trade, or sign a thirty something year old vet, like Terry,Gragg, or Verba, who is more a guard than tackle and wants big money, what else is their.

Johnson is a guy we might be able to sneak on the practice squad, since we are pretty deep on the d-line and not alot is known about him. I dont think we can hide thompson anymore, so I think we’ll see alot of him the last game of preseason. I think A-train is on the bubble to make this team. Its nice to see that we seem to have alot more depth in so many positions for a change, but it certainly makes decisions on who makes the cut alot harder.

    J-MAN on August 24th, 2005 10:30 am

I think Vollers will definately stay. BP even said that he was more valuable as a backup, hence he is not in the race to start RT. either Noll or Walter will be gone. BP is cheering for Noll. Scott will stick but Reese and Dantzler will be gone. Johnson has got to go to the practice squad(and hope he stays). we should be able to get something for Morgan…..anything. He being traded would enable us to keep Merritt b/c i don’t see him beating out Crowder due to spec teams. Tucker is gone, Rogers will be cut from IR(via settlement) just to slap him upside the head.

Henson will stay b/c of the three year rule. He will have 3 yrs to show worth then he’ll be cut(plus the cap hit would be better)

Looks like Dallas is going to sign and bring in Cody, a safety, that was recently cut by the Falcons for a look. I think beriault might have to get his knee scoped to see what the problem is with his knee and might miss a couple of weeks at the start of the season, was limping a bit on Monday night. He’s a tough guy and a definite keeper.

I wonder if we could get something in trade for Ogbogu. I thought he played well against the Seahawks. Maybe if we give him extended time against the Texans, and he does well again, we might get an offer. I just don’t see him fitting onto our final roster.

The Seahawks, who have seen him and who are defensively challenged, might make an offer.

    Mr. Bill,

Maybe we could trade Morgan to seattle, they seem to like wide recievers that cant catch a ball.

I think that if singleton didn’t have the experience he has in this league, he would be cut in place of Ogbogu

    Derrick,
    LMMFAO about your Morgan comment!

I wonder if we could get something for Ogbogu. Interesting thought. For a camp pickup, this Coady guy sounds like he might be worth something. We’ll see. No surprise that Reese is gone though. BP kept Kincade and Dantzler only for their roster exemptions since they were NFLE this spring. Sorry to see Merritt go, did not know that he was injured. Bad luck about Cundiff, but that is the biz. About Rogers, enough said.

    My Cuts:

    1. *QB-Drew Henson:
We need to get a veteran; can’t have both inexperienced young guys as backups! Jerry Jones is waiting for the upcoming Major League Baseball draft. But I think Jerry Jones will try to go after a veteran, “the big unit”, Randy Johnson. He too has an arm and is tall enough to see over offensive line (NY Yankee connection, I should get paid for this foresight). I don’t think he’s played football. But that’s not important to Jerry, he plays baseball and that’s whats important. Gosh, what heck of GM.

    2. S-Lynn Scott:
Scott has to outperform newly signed Coady to stay on the roster.

    3. DT-Leo Carson or Thomas “Pepper” Johnson:
I prefer Johnson over Carson b/c he’s younger and has been able to muster the ability to make plays. Leo Carson doesn’t get his lard ass on the field long enough.

    4. WR-Reggie Harrell:
    Just hasn’t made a splash.

    5. G-Ben Noll:
Well, he was highly towted as being one of the most improved but to many viewers, he’s just another Bill Paracels would be, could be, should be diamond in the ruff.

    6. WR-Jamaica Rector
    Rector Who???? My point exactly.

    7. TE- Jeff Robinson
Hopefully, one of the other TE’s can manage his job with some consistancy and we can save money by releasing him.

    8. DB-Lenny Williams
Hall of Fame basketball coach. I’m sorry, that’s Lenny Wilkins. Who the hell is Lenny Williams?

    9. FS-Woody Danzler
Only if it could be 2003 pre-season. Maybe he can cast in the movie
“Back in Time” with Michael J. Fox.

Got something to say?
