Cowboys Acquire Kicker

Posted: August 26, 2005 @ 4:58 pm

Dallas acquired kicker Seth Marler from the Jacksonville Jaguars for an undisclosed pick in next year’s draft.

Marler missed the entire 2004 season with a leg injury and was just 20 of 33 on field goal attempts as a rookie in 2003. He will provide competition for Jose Cortez, who became the only kicker on the roster when Billy Cundiff was cut.

My guess is that the pick is conditional on Marler making the team. Moreover, I doubt it is more than a sixth rounder. More likely a seventh.

Geez, it’d better be a conditional 7th, or we just overpaid for some guy who may not even be on the team in two weeks.

According to Yahoo!News, Seth Marler “converted 20-of-23 field-goal attempts and all 30 extra points as a rookie with the Jaguars in 2003, missed the entire 2004 campaign with a quadriceps injury.”

It goes on to say that “[t]he 24-year-old Marler also connected on 20-of-33 field goals - as well has handling punting duties - as a senior at Tulane in 2002.”

So he may be the kicker we need after all!

NO no…..he was 20-33 with Jacksonville. Check out this bio to see…http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/397297

anyways, his breakdown is really awful…He was 10-11 from 20-29 yards, 4-8 from 30-39 yards, and 5-12 from 40-49 yards, and 1-2 from 50+ yards. Bottom line Marler is going to really have to impress the Cowboys in for him to make this team, especially considering Cortez is 4 for 4 on field goals in the preaseason.

Hey maybe Cundiff comes back after the injury. The last thing I am worrying about is cotton pickin kicker. We can raid the Mexican or Brasil Soccer teams if we have too. Last time I checked the NFL pays more than most amateur and pro soccer teams……….unless your Beckham.

Kickers………..who needs em……….lets just line up and go for two if we are 50% it evens out in the long run. LOL.

If anyone saw Friday Night Lights, that Dallas Carter team didn’t attempt a field goal or extra point the entire season and they won the state championship…maybe we should follow that model? lol

    Adam,

    You are correct…effing Y!News!

Anyway, Sporting News says he was running behind Josh Scobee in camp, and Josh Scobee’s stats from last year are: 77.4% FG, 72.7% 30-39 yds, 71.4% 40-49 yds, 33.3% 50+ yds.

Yeesh! If Scobee is better than Marler and Marler is (maybe) better than Cortez, then just how terrible is Cortez?

    I’m assuming we won’t see Marler tomorrow….

    Jon,

Weren’t you the guy who said kickers are walk ons? .. You don’t use draft picks for them? .. “Give me a dependable one and I’ll give you a draft pick”, is what Parcells is thinking now.

Jax will never see the pick for Marler, any more than Dallas will see the ones for Hunter or that spare guard who was buried on the Dallas depth chart. Everybody is trying to get to 53, and Parcells wants to give Cortez some competition in the interim. He may still pick another one up after the final cut downs. Bet on seeing Marler in preseason, but no more.

OK, trying to add a little value here after getting suckered by 3rd rate reporting….

Marler was a 1st team All-American at Tulane in 2001 (his Junior year) and won the Lou Groza award for best placekicker that year. The Lou Groza Award site says,

“After being a semifinalist his freshman and sophomore seasons, Seth Marler finally broke through as a junior and won the Lou Groza Award. Marler made 15 of the 16 field goal attempts he made (the only miss was blocked) and connected on 39 of 40 extra points. He went three for three on kicks longer than 50 yards, including a 53-yarder against East Carolina that was the second-longest field goal in Green Wave history. Marler’s field goal percentage of 93.8% shattered the previous school mark by more than 10 percent. Marler finished his career at Tulane in 2002 as the most prolific kicker ever to weara Green Wave jersey, making 66 field goals during his four years in New Orleans.”

So he’s got a very strong leg, which would be good on kickoffs.

Previous winners include Ruffin, Janikowski, Gramatica and some guys I’ve never heard of.

i would not have spent a draft pick any pick for a kicker………no i would not.

I think even Vinateri and Vanderjak came in as FAs. I mean kickers ain’t exactly QBs. We ought to be able to find one somewhere. I think the Raiders are the only team dumb enough to draft a kicker high……and then the guy is a date rape fiend. But hey dats DA RAIDERS for ya. Maybe Moss will turn him on to some kind. LOL.

    James on August 26th, 2005 6:32 pm

I have confirmed at cowboysplus.com that the draft pick we gave for Marler is a CONDITIONAL 7th in ‘06. Had it been more than that, as many posters have said, we would have been robbed. Thanks for the stats on Marler guys, or should I say no thanks. Beyond 30 yards the guy is atrocious. I think Bill is rolling the dice here because he has a strong leg and can kick it out of the endzone. Which Cundiff could not do and Cortez cannot do regularly.

    gene on August 26th, 2005 6:36 pm

If you guys remember, Cortez was horrible with the 49ers. He missed a few clutch kicks that would have won games for them> Definitely not a BP type of player.

i wish jerry and bill would stop giving away picks for kickers. i dont care if its a 6th or a 7th. stop giving away picks for kickers. there could be a patrick crayton or jay latliff, we could have gotten with that pick. we should be out trying to trade for a vet RT or a good wr.

cowboy bert : hunter has already been released by the Jets. But as I understood it, we should still receive compensation - I thought Hunter was traded for a 6th round pick which could become a 5th if he met some playing clauses. Can others confirm if Hunter being release means we don’t get the Jet’s 6th next year? thanks.

set at receiver for 2 or 4 years what???? Glenn can not play a full year and KJ is getting slowing by the year and he wasn’t fast to start with. A young WR is a need. JJ will bring in a WR next year.

    JohnS on August 26th, 2005 8:03 pm

We will receive a 6th round pick from the Jets for Pete Hunter. There was no clause that said he had to make the team

  27. 27
    Lou on August 26th, 2005 8:19 pm

We will be okay this year at WR. We are going to run a ton of 2 TE sets. Here’s how I see the 53 man roster breaking down:

    QB- Bledsoe, Romo, Henson

RB- Jones, Barber, Thomas, Thompson, Polite

    TE- Witten, Campell, Peirce,

WR- Johnson, Glenn, Crayton, Morgan, Crowder
    - Rector to the PS

OL- Allen, Adams, Johnson, Rivera, Petiti, Vollers, Peterman, Gurode
    - Noll to the PS, Tarullo to the PS

DL- Glover, Fergunson, Ellis, Spears, Coleman, Canty, Ratliff, Carson
    - Johnson to the PS

LB- Dat, Ware, Burnett, James, Shanle, Fowler, Singelton, Ogbogu

    - IF Ogbogu is traded, then Thorton is kept. His knee will hurt him. Its really a toss up, but BP has said Ogbogu is the better rusher.
    - O’Neil to the PS

CB- Henry, Newman, Glenn, Reeves, Jones

    S- Roy, Beirult, Davis, Scott

    - Scott is kept because he can play both S positions.

    P- McBriar
    K- Cortez
    LS- Robinson

we are not set at wr. t. glenn is not a go too reciever anymore and he cant stay on the field. KJ is on the downside. Q. morgan is a wast of time. i do think p. crayton is a goodyoung player. but we have to get a bigtime reciever in this years draft or in FA. do not cut thomas johnson, A. thomas and e.obg. trade them for late round picks if we can.

Mr. Bill on August 26th, 2005 9:57 pm

IF Marler can beat out Cortez, stick with the team, and become a decent place kicker, he is well worth that 7th-round pick. But, Marler only has two weeks (at best) to make an impression, and they aren’t even sure he will get here in time to play against the Texans.

If Marler doesn’t stick with the team, we owe Jacksonville nothing for what is basically an extended tryout. I think Marler is a long shot. As Parcells said, it’s Cortez’s job to lose right now.

  33. 33
cowboy bert on August 26th, 2005 11:22 pm

Lou, that is pretty close. I think Morgan, James, and Scott are playing for their positions, though, and would be surprised if James makes the team ahead of Thornton, ankle or not. Thornton is a player, and James seemingly is not, and Parcells likes players.

    About Quincy Morgan,

Here is a snippet, taken from another forum, from a (pay only) DMN article by JJ Taylor:

Parcells, Morgan meet: Receiver Quincy Morgan said he recently met with coach Bill Parcells to discuss what he could do to get more opportunities to catch the ball in practice and games.
Morgan declined to divulge details but said the meeting was productive. The Cowboys acquired Morgan from Cleveland last October in a trade for Antonio Bryant.
“I talked to him, and everything is cleared up,” Morgan said. “Hopefully, I’ll get some chances in this game.
“Everybody is coming at me like I’m some scrub or something, and that’s not the case. I’m so motivated it’s ridiculous.”

We can only hope that Morgan’s enthusiasm translates into increased productivity on the field.

    Lou:

Those are 52… I’d recommend for you to add another OL… I hate myself for saying this, but Tucker is needed… at least the guy can play OT and might be better this year if Petitti flames out…

  36. 36
    Chandus on August 27th, 2005 2:29 pm

And something else, why is A-Train on the list? What’s his purpose carrying the ball? Short yardage sits. Can Polite handle those? On Monday he made a decent job at those, as decent as what A-Train was making, but he wasn’t bringed down at first contact as Thomas did most of the time. If Thomas continues at that and Polite proves to be capable of moving the chains and hauling down some passes out of the backfield, then he will make the roster beating out Thomas.

And then we would keep another OLineman, DLineman or LB.

    Joey2zs on August 27th, 2005 3:53 pm

Shouldn’t Walter remain on the squad due to his ability to play many positions? He could be the 53rd guy

    Seth, we hardly knew ye!

DC.com is reporting that Seth Marler failed his physical today, nullifying the trade.
