Philly’s Complaint Should Make Jerry Tamper (charge) Resistant
Posted: November 29, 2005 @ 12:21 pm
By now you’ve certainly heard the news. The Philadelphia Eagles have filed a complaint with the NFL charging Jerry Jones with tampering. Jerry’s alleged offense? He stated in a radio interview that he’s a “risk taker” and has taken on troublemakers like WR Terrell Owens before.
We would all be laughing if the consequences were not so severe. But I’m going to laugh anyway.
Consider the source, ladies and gentlemen. The Philadelphia Eagles front office is the party filing the complaint.
Let’s go in the wayback machine to the spring of 2004 and examine the manner in which the Eagles acquired T.O. Owens and his agent got into a dispute with the NFL over procedure. Owens was expected to become a free agent but missed a filing deadline that would have voided his contract. The league ruled that he was therefore still a member of the 49ers. Owens and his agent began working out a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, who offered the 49ers a fifth round pick and a player as compensation. The 49ers were unhappy with such a low offer for a top-tier WR and traded Owens to the Baltimore Ravens for a 2nd round pick.
Owens refused to report to Baltimore, insisting he wanted to play for Philadelphia. The 49ers wanted more compensation from the Eagles but the Philly brass refused to budge because they wanted to wait on an arbitrator’s ruling that might have made Owens a free agent. The 49ers, Ravens and Eagles sorted out the mess before the scheduled hearing, so the arbitrator never ruled.
The 49ers blinked, fearing they might get nothing for him. They agreed to Philly’s offer of a 5th-round pick and backup DT Brandon Whiting, and returned the 2nd rounder to Baltimore, who concluded they would not fight for a player who was all but signed by another team. Owens then received a seven year, $42 million contract from the Eagles.
So let’s tally this up. The Eagles:
a. negotiated with Owens before the NFL ruled conclusively that Owens was a free agent. This may have been done with the 49ers blessing, but it did not have the league’s stamp of approval;
b. paid the 49ers less than market value for T.O., though they gave him a contract in line with his skills;
c. refused to match Baltimore’s offer, which was more in line with Owens’ value, because they knew he wanted to play for them.
On the other hand, the Cowboys owner said he has taken on players like Owens in the past.
Which reads more like tampering to you?
Oh, and did I mention that 14-hour hearing last week, where the Eagles presented reams of information to the league in order to shut down Owens for the remainder of the year?
Let’s see if we can put the Eagles’ reasoning into a syllogism. It would look something like this:
A. Terrell Owens is a disruptive player. We have won the right to suspend and later release him;
B. The Dallas Cowboys say they have taken on players like Owens, suggesting they might sign him when we release him;
C. Therefore, the Dallas Cowboys are guilty of tampering with our player, since it is our expressed intent to release him. Uh, wait……
The Eagles now look like the NFL’s possessive girlfriend — I don’t want him, but you can’t have him!
But T.O.’s the only crazy one here, right?

Actually, that is exactly what the Eagles are trying to do…keep the Cowboys from signing him.
And it makes perfect sense.
If they can get the league to buy into their argument, then the Cowboys will be barred from signing t.o.
As much as I despise the brat, I would not want him on any team in the NFC East.
You can’t fault them for trying, but how can the league take them seriously after their behavior?
other than not being able to sign terrel owens, are there any penalties dallas would suffer if found guilty for tampering. if barring dallas from getting tissy owens is the only penalty, i want to thank the nfl from letting jerry jones make another stupid decision. all this effort parcells has put in for bringing in talent into dallas and jerry trying to muck it up by taking interest in a schlemeil like tissy owens. please nfl, bar this from happening, i beg you.
peronally takin t.o. is a huge risk but if there is anywhere he could be controlled and be happy is in dallas. i dont like t.o. at all but the boys have the greatest chance of keeping him happy and controlling him. we know parcells aint goin for the b.s. that he could do and neither will some of the players, we all seen how cortez was man handled when he missed a fieldgoal in s.f. and also jerry jones has the pocketbook for t.o. happiness. if it would work i would be all for it but if it didnt i would be pissed.
Problem child,
Be careful what you wish for. The penalty for tampering is loss of a draft pick(s).
Draft picks, fine, or both.
But most incidents have only resulted in a ban on the player.
In no way will the penalty for this infraction, if found to be a violation, result in anything more than a ban on signing t.o.
Is that necessarily bad?
jerry jones didnt violate anything, hell all he said was his organization has dealt with similar situations in the past with many other players, he didnt even say owens name. he did nothing wrong, its only the eagles are tryin to hate thats all and personally they are being pu$$ies.
No it wouldn’t be terrible, but I’d be shocked if Dallas was found guilty of anything. What Jerry did is not wrong and the Eagles are being hypocrites to claim he is.
Me, too. I’d be shocked and would consider it conspiratorial.
These multiple threads are making me dizzy. What? Were you bored?
I agree with Rafael. I’d be shocked if JJ was found in the wrong and if any punitive measures were taken. I also agree with Fighter15. This is an attempt to cheaply keep the Boys from signing TO. I’m not surprised if he or his agent contacts the boys soon after the season.
I read the transcript of JJ comments on Owens; He specifically stated, “I (Jones) will not comment on Owens but answering in general I am a risk taker”… He goes on to clarify 3X’s he is not speaking about Owens but in relation to his (Jones) own tendency to take chances and make things work with not so perfect situations. I am a true life-long Dallas fan, I hope to God Owens never plays for Dallas, But as Jones said any player with talent is intriguing… Hope Jerry paid attention to the fact that T. Glenn is having an Owens like numbers year, I am an investor and bang for your buck Glenn whoops Owens butt…
The only thing that Owens said that ever made sense is that the Eagles are a low class organization. The Eagles sold their soul to the Devil now the Devil (Owens) has reared its ugly head. I have one question, when is the NFL going to test Owens for Steroids?
His body and behavior scream DRUGS!
Dallas will not be fined or lose any draft picks, My question is can the Eagles be fined for filing a false accusation?
How is it that they are allowed to slander Dallas?
Joseph
TG is nowhere near TO. TO brings a lot more than TG. I don’t care if TO comes here or not. But I know he is a lot better than what we have now. I still want to draft a WR if TO comes or not.
It’s a laughable attempt even the Eagles must see that, or maybe they don’t. Shell-shocked, their front office is standing amid the shambles of their season wondering how it could all go so horribly wrong. The complaint was registered before the arbitration hearingâ€â€when the possibility existed that T.gO. might hit the open market this season, but that they haven’t withdrawn it indicates they must be serious to some extent. I guess they figure giving the assertion due diligence with the league office might at least keep him out of Dallas or even cost Dallas some picks. But that’s a long, long shot that lands back at laughable. The league office is looking into their complaint like they are the Quincy Carter case.
This is a bit off topic.
I know I should ignore the power rankings, but come on, how does cbs laud the broncos as the second coming while at the same time relegate the cowboys to 11th?
I mean the two teams just played, and the game came down to a few feet on Cundiff’s missed field goal? To me, you can’t say, after watching that game, that the broncos are elite, but the cowboys are somewhere near the middle of the pack. Am I crazy? Geeez.
“Dallas will not be fined or lose any draft picks, My question is can the Eagles be fined for filing a false accusation?
How is it that they are allowed to slander Dallas?”
I agree completely. The NFL should give the Eagles’ 1st round 2006 draft choice to the Cowboys, as a penalty for filing an unjustified complaint.
Madcowboy,
please don’t look at ‘power rankings’ and take them seriously and/or write in to the writer to complain. Leave that baby crap to Redskins fans who write and complain over every percieved slight.
Winning is Our Business.
Not Whining.
power rankings are just for fun. There is a playoff in the NFL. Don’t worry. The best team always wins.
Wow, it’s amazing how everything T.O. touches turns to feces. First the 49ers, then the Eagles’ record this year, now the Eagles’ front office shenanigans…. The Cowboys better not be next in line for the posterchild of bad karma.
Fellas,
Dont get me wrong, Im not initiating a TO band wagon here.
Consider though that the beautiful house the iggles built over the last few years may have crumbled not just because of TO but b/c of some other termites eating away.
McNabb was really the only guy their management paid alot of money. Other very productive veterans were released for young players and it caught up to them. There is little doubt there is resentment among iggle veterans over this fact. The only iggle player that spoke out on the TO issue was trotter, arguably a team leader, and he didnt come down on mcnabb’s side at all. Dont forget that TO had a HUGE year last year and made a heroic effort to come back and play in the SB. It wasnt lost on the iggles players that mcnabb did not play well in the 4th 1/4 of the SB while TO had a big game.
In short, its not the end of the world if TO comes to dallas under the right circumstances.
Its not the end of the world if he doesnt either. JJ and BP are potentially holding all the cards if those future negotiations take place. we will be contenders. TO wants to play for a contender.
I have absolute faith in BP in this matter. If he is willing to coach TO, Im OK with it. I think JJ will defer to him strongly in the matter.
I definitely dont want to see TO in this division unless its with us. If he goes somewhere outside the division, fine.
There is no questioning his on-field production though.
it would be a bandwagon with very few onboard.
Derrick,
At first, but what if the boys win the division with him? Of course, we may do that this year without him.
Im just being devil’s advocate here. The bandwagon will grow big if he is putting up huge numbers and we’re winning.
i think that one of the only teams that can make t.o. happy playwise and moneywise is the cowboys, i also think parcells is one of the only coaches that can keep t.o. under control. plus after all this im pretty sure owens has more than learned his lesson, not being able to play ball for that long. the eagles are the dumb ones who punish him to teach him a lesson and then want to get rid of him. they taught him a valuable lesson for some other team to get the positive effects out of it. and for you “NAPPI” owens is not on steroids believe me, i have seen him in person many times, on the freeway, downtown san jose, ca, and at clubs. he is not near as big and muscular as you think. there has been many times that i have heard “oh thats t.o.? he aint even big, ill wrap his ass up!”
the eagles have made their bed and now they must lie in it, owens didnt make that organization go down remember “they were on top with out him” the reason why they have sunk and will not be nearly as dominant for a very long time is because of karma. they treat most of their players like crap. they get these young players in there and the players excell over the next 3 or 4 years and its time for them to get their paycheck increased as deserved but the eagles stingy asses wont so a lot of key players have went somewhere else. they almost didnt even give westbrook more money. when they were good the last 3 years a lot of those players are gone because of money. you dont treat people like that. maybe some because you have to but not that many because you want to
Board,
If we had TO this year we would be either 10-1 or
11-0 and no one cares who our kicker is.
It hurts, but it is the truth.
Golden,
What if the iggles approach TO quietly last year and offer to renegotiate and pay him some more money?
Could it be any worse for them had they done that?
The difference about JJ is…he’ll pay the money. Give him that if nothing else. He is committed to WINNING.
AlanTdot,
First, ok. I’m over my momentary tirade about the power ranking.
Back to the topic. I don’t want TO, but as GM, you have to consider the worst case alternative. What if the Giants sign TO…
NY will field an offense that has Burress and TO at the receiver positions, Shockey at TE, and Barber at RB. And don’t forget, Eli at QB.
Does this possibility make a difference?
It looks like no matter who wins the division this year, the cowboys and giants will be battling it out for the foreseeable future.
Do we really want to risk the possibility that they could get TO?
Imagine with me a minute…
TO dances on the star again. This time in a boys uniform with other boys dancing next to him. The clock reads 00.00 in the NFC championship and the boys are SB bound. Iggles, skins, and giants faithful are shaking their heads and staring blankly into space.
OK, slap yourselves back to reality.
sorry, just one scenario.
The NFL is all about options. BP says it all the time. He spends alot of spare time working roster options due to injuries or potential injuries.
TO or P. Price? No brainer.
TO represents tremendous options. I guarentee JJ and BP will give it some consideration.
Gotta go.
Remember, the NFL already hates Jerry Jones. Remember the Pepsi debacle (NFL sueing the Cowboys and Jerry’s $750 million dollar counter suit)
Will they seek retribution?
I’d be happy to have T.O. here. (there in Dallas anyway) I think between The Tuna, Keyshawn, and what has happen this season. T.O. will keep himself inline as much as Keyshawn has. T.O. bit the hand that feed him and it bit back. He isn’t stupid. Bring on T.O.
comitted to winning, huh. how many winning seasons and superbowls have we had since 96? T.O is a Cancer, period. He has destroyed two locker rooms, trashed two quarterbacks, two head coaches, two offensive coordinators, came back from an ankle injury the week he was due back and everyone say he risked his future, now thats funny. We wouldn’t be 10-1 or 11-0 with him, not with this offensive line. He was paid as a top three wideout in the league and he still whinned, I dont want to risk the future and nucleus of this team that finally rid itself of the cancers from before to pay this idiot who will be 34 next year all that money which kills our salary cap that will take away from us getting a good young or resigning a player who’s contract is coming up.
MADCOWBOY T.O WOULD PROBABLY RUIN SOME OF OUR YOUNG PLAYERS.LETS PASS ON THIS ONE.WE ARE STARTING TO BUILD OUR OWN CHEMISTRY.LETS NOT RISK A SET BACK
Derrick,
Yes committed to winning. JJ brought in BP and relinquihed a large amount of control to him. The scouting department was completely upgraded. He spent a large amount of money in the offseason. How else can you read that?
JJ and BP are on the same page. They want to go out winners.
Really gotta go now.
DERRICK i AGREE WE’VE WAITED TOO LONG TO HAVE SOME MORON SET US BACK ANOTHER 5 YEARS.
i hate owens but i think he could give the boys a push for the bowl. no doubt in my mind owens would be happy with jones money. he forks out big time. a lil tiny doubt that parcells could keep owens in line. the man plays football and is the best receiver in the league along side chad johnson in my eyes. if and when he comes to dallas cuzz i think its gonna happen i bet that all you owens haters and even myself will be jumping up and down when he scores touchdowns. hell we do have a good core of receivers but our big plays have been minimal the last 3 years and with the exception of the first 4 or 5 games this season.
PP is gone no matter if TO comes or not. I want to see Crayton starting next year with TO or without TO And with a rookie at 4th or 3rd spot. But I don’t see us drafting a wr.
nando,
I hear you. But would your answer still be the same if you knew the Giants were interested in TO?
To me, the cowboys and the giants are similarly situated with each having great upside potential.
If they signed TO, it could, over the next several seasons, leave us in the wild card game instead of enjoying home field advantage.
madcowboy
I think NY has more of an upside right now because of their offense and their D is getting better. Our upside is the Defense.
MADCOWBOY; IT’S STILL VERY RISKY COULD BE THE THE OTHER WAY AROUND THE TEAM THAT GETS HIM COULD BE STRUGGLING TO GET PAST THE FIRST ROUND.LOOK AT THE NINERS WHEN THEY HAD HIM.PLUS YOU GOT THE DEVELPMENT OF YOUNG PLAYERS.THE TRASHING OF QUATERBACKS.IN MY OPINION THE EAGLES WE’RE GOING NOWHERE WITH OR WITHOUT T.O.LOOK WHAT WE DID TO THEM WITH T.O.
jarhead,
All what you said was done in the last year, not when bill first got here. I know bills a great coach, but when he first got here I knew at his age he would bring in all the castoffs of his old teams which I knew was the wrong thing to do, he tried to win now, and not put the building blocks in place to allow this team to flurish in the years to come. After the mirage of year one of his experiment it all went wrong in year two and he finally did what I thought should of been done the first year when he got here, and that was to blow up this organization, bring in some good young free agents, draft some good young talent and get them on the field to get them the game experience they need to come together and grow as a unit as thay are now. Jery sacrificed this team when he brought in and over paid to win the superbowl in 96 and ruined this team cap wise for years. If you think that theory works, ask washington, how its working for them. They are so much cap hell, they wont and cant sign T.O and if you think ernie ecorsi and the giants would sign that idiot T.O, you haven’t watched them, they dont take chances as an organizations on Cancers.I dont see the new england patriots with super star wideout, they have 3 superbowls in four years, they instead draft well and have character players and play as a team.Team win championships, not characters who are ego maniacs, like T.O
aw,
NY OLine is worse than ours, but without any upside. (Luke Pettigout?) How many false starts on Sunday?
Their D is Not as Deep as ours and Strahan is on the back end of a great career. But still the back end.
Yes they have the playmakers we do not on offense, so we will see if our D can nullify their playmakers on Offense.
Michael Irvin was so much like t.o. in his day that it’s scary.
A two or three year gig in Big D would cement our place in the postseason.
Imagine a WR corps of t.o., Keyshawn, and Terry Glenn? Add Witten, JJ/MBIII, and Bledsoe and we’d be one OT from a dynasty.
It’d be worth the risk.
Derrick,
With TO Defenses could not pack 8 and 9 men in the box. All of a sudden our OLine looks pretty good and our RB’s are going off like Peter North during the money shot. (thats for you Cash!)
Please tell me which of our 1-2-3-4 point losses would have happenned with TO?
I am not a TO fan, but I know what he brings on the field.
Philly should have dropped him in the offseason or traded him.
when did Micheal Irvin ever trash his head coach, his quarterback, his offensive coordinator, the cowboy organization or got into fights with his teamates and was a locker room cancer, when, tell me, there is no comparison between the two.
how does a wide reciever help the O-line and give a quarterback time to throw the ball when we have to mass protect to help our young tackles, HOW?????????
Derrick,
Irvin threatened Larry Allen with a large pair of scissors in a famous locker room fight.
To would have to be Doubled or at least have safety help. There goes the 8 or nine man box. Less rushers means less blitzes and less people coming to get the QB. So you don’t have to Max protect all day. So you can get witten to play TE instead of part time OLineman part time pass catching TE.
derick, you want to know how a threatening receiver helps the oline and give bledsoe time. well it is very easy
if t.o. lets say is lined up as receiver. he can easily take pressure off of the o-line because less people can blitz because some of those linebackers and safeties have to drop back for protection. this will have less people in the box and also this takes pressure off of bledsoe. when you dont have deep threats a team can put 8,910 in the box and blitz many.
Derrick,
There is basis for you’re take on BP not planning for the future.
What he did at the Giants, NE, and the Jets proved he left the team with the tools to be winners for years.
He started with a great draft in ‘03, but didn’t splash into FA. Once he got a good evaluation of the talent on hand, he then made the moves to get the FAs necessary to build a winner.
To me, this is already a done deal. Look at the players in this drama. JJones, willing to spend money, loves to poach from his rivals (Sanders, Haley from the niners).
BParcells, has a history of reclamation projects and percieved attitude problems (TGlenn, KJohnson)
TO looking for a big stage to strut and a team that could win a championship.
It fits folks, whether we like it or not.
They go 13-3 with TO next year. Maybe 14-2.
our teams offense is set up by the run, if we cant run, the play action doesn’t work and teams are just loading up with run blitzes, pressuring us up the middle to make bledsoe throw the short routes, he has no time to throw the intermediate routes or the deep routes, T.O wouldn’t change that.
A short route to TO has a chance of getting six. We don’t have that right now.
If you bet blitz and the pass gets to TO, thats six again.
There are a few players who can change the dynamic from any position, TO is one of those. Brady, Moss, Vick, Wayne, Alexander, LT, etc
ALANTDOT DREW BLEDSOE IS A FAGGG.DOES T.O.KNOW THIS
nando,
you’re a child do you know this?
Unbuckle your pants and take a good look for proof.
ALANTDOT SORRY I OFFENDED YOU.
AlanTDot and nando should get together and go bowling.
Im not advocating signing TO. Im merely saying there is chance it will happen. BP and JJ will do their homework b4 they do it. I trust BP’s judgement. If he is OK with it, I am. Again, we are holding the cards. There will be little cap strain to the deal if it happens. This allows us to pursue other fills as well (O-line, OLB, etc).
Again, I trust BP on this one, one way or the other.
Meantime, we play NYG on sunday.
derick. yes we are struggling at the run, but i can bet you parcells with have some more o-linemen in there next year. haveing owens would change a great deal, he would create double teams which would have receivers and witten open more and backs out of the backfield, it puts less pressure on the line and bledsoe for blitzes. he is one of very few players that can catch a 10 yard pass and run for 50 yards to score. and he has never had a bad season.
transplanted dallas fan in NYC:
Are you out there? Are you going to the game sunday??
alantdot
NY offense as a whole is better than ours, its not even close. I said their D is getting better. Our offense is not getting better. Our d is better right now and it is still getting better. What is harder to fix offense or defense. When is the last time our offense was good? NY has more upside than we do at this point.
Manning (maybe not this year but long-term) is the difference in the Cowboys and Giants, simple as that. Superbowls are won with dominate quarterbacks (with just a few exceptions in 40 years). A dominate quarterback handles blitzes on his own (with or without dominate receivers) because he knows the hot reads and gets the ball there fast.
Dominate receivers are helpful to a flawed QB, but not mandatory for a stud. BTW, anyone remember who Elway’s receivers were? Look back at SuperBowl QB’s and ask yourself which of the dominate QB’s would not have won without their star receiver.
Manning is soon to be the real deal and the Cowboys better deal with that fact soon.
well our offense hasnt played up to its ability. i still think there have been a whole lot of changes on offense such as, o-line, crayton gone, julius jones , al johnson. i still think that our offense will get back to where it should be right before playoffs start. hey at least they got the snapping the ball down
defense is no issue, especially when henry comes back. the offensive line just needs to play better and bledsoe needs to minimize mistakes.
rha,
Maybe, maybe not. When before this season did Peyton Manning ever do anything to the Patriots? He was the happiest man in the NFL when realignment occured because Bill Belichich was eating his lunch twice a year. Nowadays, they only embarrass him in the playoffs.
Eli is getting better, but so is the young Cowboys D. Should make for interesting viewing the next few years.
Rafael,
I agree Manning had trouble with NE, but the was facing at least as dominate a QB as himself in Brady and he played the games in NE. Anyway, nothing is absolute as you clearly understand, but younger Manning looks very good under pressure as evidenced by his 4th qtr performances.
You are right that the Cowboy defense is going to give him trouble for many years. Glad we have it.
AlanTDot-I thought the Irvin incident a few years back was against some spare that got cut from the team and on the neck. It was in a dorm room in Wichita Falls I think. It wasn’t LA. i don’t remember all the details.
As far as TO being a Cowboy-I’m all for it under the right contract with lots of incentives and behavior clauses(and another agent). It would fit him well to be the talent that puts us over the edge on our way to a super bowl. It would fit us well by allowing us to draft other positions(and it would make our O-line look tons better).
rha-Plaxico and Tiki make Manning look good. Same situation for the other Manning.
Derrick:
Did you read Matt Mosley’s DMN article about Michael Irvin today? Now we know someone who voted against Playmaker last year for HOF. Briefly:
Irvin made it to the final ballot last year, and Magee said he would vote against Irvin for the second straight year for different reasons than Irvin’s conduct.
“This won’t sway my vote one bit because I don’t think he’s a Hall of Famer in the first place,” Magee said. “Every time he went deep, he was pushing off.”
Wow! Magee is so DEEP!
Rafael,
I live in the NY area, and see a lot of the Giants. There is something I have seen over the course of the season. Umenyiora their DE crashes down the line of scrimmage. I believe that they are very volnerable to a reverse the field type play.If Crayton plays, I might expect a reverse and throw back to Bledsoe. I am telling you, although this player is good, he overpersues to the point the Boys can take real advantage of. .. If you get a chance to check out tape of the G-men check it out.
i really think the running game will be the difference.who ever runs the ball will win this game.im a cowboy but the giants have run the ball much better than dallas.bp must make some adjustments to get jj back.go boys!
The eagles are filing charges against the cowboys so TO doesn’t come here.Thelast thing they want is a division rival having TO.I think TO is a jerk but the eagles are no saints in this matter either. They handled the whole situation badly …….kinda says something about how afraid they are of the boys!!
Umenyiora sure gave walter Jones all he could handle last week, I guess that what San Diego seen in him since they wanted Umenyiora in the Manning Rivers trade, but the giants didn’t budge.
I think that Irvin is a Hall of Fame candidate, he was a player that changed the position of wide reciever, being big strong and physical reciever and would go across the middle that really wasn’t seen before him.But the off the field issues will keep him out of the Hall even though its not suppose to be taken into account and the fact that he’s a cowboy, so with what went on last week, three strikes and your out.
if TO comes to the cowboys, he will take up too much cap room. it would be better to spend that money on lbs, fs, linemen, k, etc. while you can sign TO to an incentive laden contract, he will reach it… then what? you either pay him or release him. plus isn’t keyshawn in a contract year? and asking for more money? i have faith in parcells to judge and acquire talent. i bet he decides not to get TO. although, it’s nice to dream of having a breakout wr that can score anywhere on the field. they would be like the chieattle bearhawks
T.O agent,
If I remember correctly, didn’t KJ sign a five year deal after the trade with tampa goe galloway, five for twenty five mil.
T.O. will be a free agent so the amount of cap space will depend on the new contract he signs.I doubt it will be for alot of money.Key is not asking for more money, that was a bogus report
by ED Werder of espn.Payback is sweet
eddie is stuck covering the dolphins!!!
Speaking of payback i think feehly missing those FGS is payback for playing footsie with that scumbag SKIPPY on that godawful show that shall not be named.
alantdot t.o for turnover
If Owens comes to Dallas, there should be certain specific stipulations in his contract regarding his conduct, however unprecedented.
1. Field conduct. He should be prohibited from doing ANYTHING after scoring a touchdown except interacting with his teammates and walk straight to the bench. No sharpies, no pom-poms, no disrespect towards the opposition or their fans, etc.
2. Gag order. He should be prohibited from speaking to the media, or at least be forbidden from speaking about his teammates, coaches, and game strategies.
3. Price fix. No renegotiation of contract. It should be heavily incentive based, and SHORT TERM. We should get him on the cheap, since he’s damaged goods. Period.
4. Zero tolerance. Parcells needs to make clear to Owens that this is his last chance. ANY insubordination or behavior deemed detrimental to the team, either on the sideline, in the locker room, or in the parking lot, will result in immediate one game suspension without pay, of course.
We’ll have to be REALLY precise as to what is expected from T.O. GET IT IN WRITING and make the consequences clear and quick. If he’s gonna act like child, then we’ll have to treat him like one.
rha,
Manning is alright, hes not his brother and never will be. Peyton has a great line, great WR’s, and a great back. Eli looks good because Tiki Barber is underrated, he’s arguably the 2nd best all around back only to LT, and Plaxico is good at the deep ball.
Bledsoe vs. Manning? Drew is clearly the better QB right now. 10 points higher completion %, 10 points higher rating, more yards. Take away Eli’s 2 big games against the Rams and Eagles, and now look at his stats. Their bad.
that wont work as it was proven by philly, T.O does what he wants too, period. No contract you write and he initially agrees to, will he abide by, so why bother with this idiot. How many teams does he have to do this to time and time again before you people realize, he’s all about himself, he doesn’t care about championships, he only cares about money and himself, thats it.
Cowboys: Hey Eagles, we whipped you good the first time, knocked you into the NFC East basement the 2nd time…..Take that……**doink**
Eagles: Yeah……..Well………You tampered with our ousted player and were gonna tell!! WAAAAA!
Very childish I know.
I think the difference in Parcells and Ried when it came to his comments would be night and day. Take for instance what Parcells said about Keyshawns comments about being moved to the slot after Crayton went down. Parcells refered to him as certifiable.
The Eagles, in my opinion are just as responsible for all of this mess as is TO. Why take everything he says so personally? Everyone knows he’s an immature idiot. Just let him talk and let ESPN act like there is nothing else to talk about and move forward.
To me this just makes it look like all of the Eagles management have vaginas between their legs.
If Owens were on the Cowboys and he said some outlandish crap about Drew Bledsoe, Parcells would say, “So What? The guy get’s it done on Sundays”.
And you can’t take that away from Owens. The guy shows up on Sundays and plays witha chip on his shoulder.
Cash, TO’s mouth is just too much. If TO said some things that were insulting to Bledsoe, then the locker room and team would be in disarray - the media that would be focused on dallas is 10x what was focused on Philly. It couldn’t just be dismissed. It would be bigger than who shot JR or the next Presidential election or landing on the moon.
He might behave himself, but let’s not kid ourselves. If he doesn’t, he’s a media figure the stature of a 2nd tier movie star, and a blow up in Dallas would push Oprah getting pregnant off the front page.
What’s interesting is that by bringing this all up, the Eagles have forced all of us - fans, media, sports agents, TO - to think about TO going to Dallas. They breathed legitimacy into this. Weird, eh?
I’m reading unbelievable things here!
1) TO will help us on the field where it counts by forcing the opposing defense to adjust to his great talents. So what!! Any benefit on the field will be ruined when he destroys the team in the locker room! We have too many young players on this team to ruin the chemistry at this point. How many super bowls have Moss and TO been to/won? And someone pointed out he would cost so much that we would be hurt at 3/4 other positions
2) It has to be an incentive-laden contract, on the cheap, blah blah blah. What has this guy ever done to indicate his egp will allow him to do that??!! Noo to mention his agent! This guy will go to a loser for 100 million rather than a winner. And by the way, he doesn’t care about winning-where did anyone get that idea? He cares about marketing himself-winning a super bowl would mean only more marketing to him.
This is a no-brainer. Let the Giants or anyone who wants have him. But maybe jack up the price meanwhile…….
By the way-he DOESN’T come to play every Sunday, chip or not. I live in the bay area, and he was often criticized when with SF for taking plays off, games off, sometimes being disinterested. You just never heard about those games… He’s just way too emotional.
OK, let me get this right.
He looks irresistable because of his talent, but he takes plays and even whole games off, acts like a head case off the field, and ends up ruining the teams he plays for.
Sounds like we should send him to our worst enemies!
49ers, check.
Eagles, check.
I know, let’s send him to the Redskins!
Cowboy Bert,
You think Dan Snyder could resist him if he was a free agent? Say what you will about Jerry’s many bad moves, but no NFL owner resembles a fantasy football owner more than “the Daniel.”
Snyder called Mike Holmgren to upbraid him when Seattle traded Joey Galloway to Dallas. (Snyder had offered a #1 and a #4 if memory serves correctly.) He told Holmgren, “I’m going to be in this league a long time and I’ve got a long memory.”
The rumors connecting T.O. to Dallas must be killing him right now. I can see him making a crazy bid for T.O. just to spite Jerry.
Which would be awesome.
Rafael:
Don’t put it past Jerry to play it that way, and to stick Danny while keeping TO’s people happy in the negotiations.
It couldn’t happen to (another) better group of people.
Jarhead,
I wish. Have you checked Ebay? aCk! Two tickets are starting at over $400, and thats with several hours left on the auction!!! Giants tickets are hard enough to get, slap the fact that it’s the Cowboys and you might as well (With my strongest New York accent) “Forget about it”…
From Ebay: 2 Tickets New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys Great Seats, Lower Level, 20 yd line, Sec. 113 $790.00
btw, Irving and T.O. are not the same. Keyshawn and Irving on more the same type player. As for what receivers I want to see next year. T.O., Keyshawn, and Crayton as the third. Terry Glenn isn’t a great receiver, he is just very fast. He is shutdown quite easily. If someone forgets about him he can hurt you with his speed. Keyshawn is the man when you need the first down (like Irving was) T.O is the man if you want to rip open huge wounds in a defense. Emmitt was who you used if you want to beat a defense with a billy club. We don’t have a billy club anymore. T.O. would make abusing defenses with Jones/Barber easier.
As for this weekends game. Dallas *can* afford to lose this game and still win the division, but this game is do or die for the Giants winning the division. The Cowboys arn’t walking with swagger which is required (IMHO) to win anything in this league. I think this game could bring that swagger if they can beat the Giants uncontested. I don’t think they have to blow them out, just make the win without question who the better team is.
Go Cowboys!
Lou
I don’t think Bledsoe is better than Eli and I don’t even like Eli but you can see he is the real deal. How many big games has Bledsoe had this year? Bledsoe numbers might like better but they don’t tell the whole story. Eli is putting points up.
I think the eagles are desperate for TO not to go to dallas hence these bogus tampering charges… an attempt to intimidate the boys into not talking to TO.
If TO goes to washington i think he implodes again .
aw,
You are an extremely pessimistic fan. Bledsoe has had some big games this and in the past.
NYC dweller who is a boys fan,
sorry you wont be at the game. enjoy watching it in NYC.
bledsoe vs eli?
eli has a lower completion % and more picks (1 more).
eli has more future up side b/c of his age but i dont think he makes the giants better by his presence alone. he has some solid targets to throw to, a good O-line, a strong running game and a good D that doesnt put him in tough spots.
under the same circumstances bledsoe has performed well consistently.
aw,
I have read post where you have complained about the RB, QB, WR, and the coach. It sounds like if you had your way we would throw the whole team away (except the defense).
Bledsoe can’t preform under presssure. Eli is better hands down Give Bledsoe the O-line of the Cowboys in the early 90s and he would be pro bowl every year. Problem is, we don’t have that great of a line and to win a super bowl, you are going to face some very stiff defenses meaning Bledsoe is going to struggle. In a perfect Cowboys world (without pressure) he is one of the best in the league. This isn’t a perfect (Cowboy) world and we have to make due. Even still; Thank god Vinny is gone, and I’m not even a religious man!!! hah
I think that while Bledsoe has better numbers, Eli is scarier to defences. Eli is more mobile, and has engineered more than a few comebacks this season. Let’s just give Drew some protection and we blow the Giants away.
Better hands down? No way. Stats don’t lie.
If you take Bledsoe and Manning’s rating game by game:
Bledsoe + 85.0- 7 times
- 85.0- 4 times (3 losses)
Manning + 85.0- 5 times (1 team w/ winning record)
- 85.0- 6 times
Our team goes by what Bledsoe does, he goes by what the line does.
Bledsoe’s YPA is better, yes he doesn’t do well when he has 9 men in the box all on an all out blitz, but thats the running game faults.
What’s Manning got in the backfield? A back who has 1120 yards rushing, a 5.0 average, and a 10.1 average for receptions. Give Bledsoe that or even JJ of LAST year and watch what he does.
With the exception of the broncos game in NY, eli engineered later 1/4 drives under little pressure. the seahawks stubbornly rushed 4 and couldnt get pressure. 80% of the QBs in the league will perform if they have time to stand in the pocket and pick apart zones.
the vikes schooled eli in NYC recently.
are you suggesting that bledsoe wasnt under pressure in philly, in SF, and in san diego playing from behind?
respect eli? sure. be scared of him? not so sure.
hands down better than bledsoe? not so sure.
I did not say i thought Eli was hands down better, but I think you can see that ELI has some QB intangibles that Bledsoe does not.
Maybe Eli is getting better plays. Eli seems to be able to get it done at the end of the half and the end of the game.
He reminds me a little of our own Captain Comeback RStaubach, who would lie pretty dormant all game and then beat you in the final 4 minutes.
Eli’s upside is significant given this is only his 2nd year. He certainly has a downside this year only due to experience, but he is a cool character. Cowboys beware, he will perform in the 4th quarter.
alantdot, it wasnt you who commented that eli is better “hands down.”
dont get me wrong, eli appears to be on his way to justifying the giant’s investment at this point. i would argue against a blanket statement that he is better than bledsoe though.
all,
interesting article on espn website about myths and truths for winning in the NFL.
as a bonus, note the mention of drew bledsoe’s performance in an AFC championship game against the steelers.
get off of eli’s nutz. he has a lot to learn and a long way to go. he has the youth drew doesnt but he doesnt have the vision drew does.
Its still to be seen if the Giants even made the right move yet, dont forget they could have had Phillip Rivers and Shawne Merriman. Eli will be a good solid QB but hes not there yet. Bledsoe is a vet and the key to us winning on Sunday. The Giants secondary is really poor while ours is one of the tops in the league.
golden,
its a safe bet that i wont be going anywhere near his nutz.
Lou,
I take Eli, you can have Bledsoe.
As for passer rating. Read this.
http://www.baseball-statistics.com/Greats/Century/passer-rating.htm
The style of offense you run can effect your passer rating. The biggest things to affect your passer rating? Offense style, your receiver, and your offensive line. Having a Jerry Rice, a west coast offense and a great offenive line will make Steve Young have a better QB rating than Joe Montana even though, Joe is thought to be the best QB in history. I think Aikman and Young are similar and Eli and Montana are similar. If the game is on the line and I need someone to win the game for me? Give me a Montana/Eli type quarterback. Eli is young; we all remember Peyton in his first year. More INTs (28) than TDs (26) a QB rating of 71. This is Eli’s first full year and he is (20) TDs and (10) INTs with a QB rating of 81. This kid is going to be really good and I would dump Bledsoe is a heart beat for him. He is young and will make mistakes, but all young quarterbacks do. Aikman wasn’t positive on his TD/INT ratio till his third season. (1989 9/18, 1990 11/18, 1991 11/10)
btw, it was I that said Eli is better than Bledsoe hands down.
May be they are close to even today, but not tomorrow. Tomorrow Bledsoe is retired, Eli on the other hand is playing in the Pro-Bowl and possibility the Super Bowl.
great,
but here we are now. 3 years from now the question is moot. no one expects bledsoe to be here 3-4 years from now. if i was playing for 2008 and 2009 i would take eli too.
I think we have just the defense to stymie Eli for a few years if we can pressure him with 4/5 rushers.
Please let Ware go man to man with Pettigout!!!
Ware has been quiet lately. He hasn’t recorded a sack in 5 games I beleive. Even though he is young, I was expecting a little more noise from him. (not saying he is playing bad) It’s great to see Ellis playing better. It helps to have Glover, Ware, Spears, and Chanty doing causes some pressure not allowing teams to double team Ellis every down.
Message to all…
TO is not worth the risk, let the Giants have him he will detrot thier organization as well…
AW reply to your comment that Glenn is no TO, You are right he is no TO and Thank GOD!THey are different players completely. TO can break one anytime and has great RAC stat’s, Glenn needs to get behind the D to do any damage, and those are lower % plays. But look at Glenns #’s this year Just look, you will be very surprised!
yeah guys we are all talking about now but what if the boys arent good enough to get there now? its just hard not to mention that parcells has completely turned this team around for years to come. look at all the young talent on the team,
crayton, barber, jones, witten, pettiti, copper, canty, ware, spears, williams, newman. what other teams have near as much young talent as the boys? hell if we get another young receiver and more o-line and hopefully if romo learns from bledsoe or even we get another qb in 2 years i really think this team could be very similar to the boys of the 90’s
The Dallas roster continues to be turned over, Ben Noll was cut today replaced by the signing of Guard Cory Proctor off the Detroit Lions practice squad.
To Transplanted Dallas native now a Giants lover…
E.Manning right now has potential, Bledsoe is underrated, he is having a great year…
Look up history who was the QB for the Giants in the Superbowl win with Parcells? Hostetler. (If ever there was a bus driver he is IT!)
I think its good dallas keeps it roster
moving.I would rather see these guys play under practice/game conditions during the season then sign them in the spring and wait until training camp to find out about them. It’s more expensive
this way but well worth it IMHO.
romo is the best, lol
Why are we 7-4? Is it because of the line? when the line plays well do we win? Is it on Bledsoe we are 7-4? If you just look at numbers Bledsoe looks like one of the best in the league. In the first part of the year people were blaming the Defense. Is JJ the answer at Rb? Is the answer as easy as the oline? Would that fix everything? If the line sucks how do you win 7 games? Every team has wholes or spots they would like to upgrade so what is the difference? How many more time can we say we should have won a game? Can our problems be fix this year?
Facing the Giants with Eli is preferable to facing the Giants with Rivers and Merriman. Eli has a running back who gets 5 yards per carry, and who turns 2 yard passes into 45 yard passes. And Eli threw some wild pitches in Seattle. Maybe they were due to the breeze, but he often turns away from pressure, looking sideways, and throws wobbly passes up for grabs. I’ll admit he’s entertaining.
aw:
As stated before, no, the problems can’t be solved this year. You can only put some makeup in them and make other teams think that you have gone over your deficiencies, that worked for some games, in others, like the Philly ad Denver game didn’t, if your OLine, FB and TE’s are having problems protecting the QB and opening lanes for the running game with 4 or 5 defenders on the box you’re going to have nightmares with 6 to 8. More of the same is on the Cowboys next games, NY, Kansas, Washington and Carolina at least have the depth and talent required to do so and survive.
aw
we are 7-4 because bledsoe lost a game for us, the 2ndary lost a game for us, cundiff lost a game for us and parcells lost a game for us. our problems can be fixed and i think they will be. i really think parcells has a lot of trix up his sleeves especially for the playoffs. maybe he is playing conservative so much cuzz he knows they can make the playoffs like that and then in the playoffs the offense may unleash big plays? maybe he is also doing that so teams cannot study them in an extensive way when a team is conservative. parcells is one of the smartest coaches in the nfl and he could have tricks such as that, we dont know, but we do know that we can run good but dont all the time, we can protect but dont all the time, we can score but dont all the time, we can pass but dont all the time,
chandus i think you are wrong. i think the problems for the most part can be solved this year. dallas does not have 1 continuous problem. sometimes the problem has been the o-line, but there are plenty of games where they held their own, sometimes it was bledsoe but there are more games in which he played well, sometimes it was kicking fieldgoals, sometimes fieldgoals won us the game, sometimes it was turnovers, sometimes it wasnt, sometimes it was the 2ndry, most of the times it wasnt. its not like there has been 1 very consistent problem for the boys. its one thing or another and then the next week it dont seem to be the same problem it was last week.
We are 7-4 because we are a good team not a great team. If the Cowboys were a great team they would be 11-0 just like the Colts. Cowboys dominated the Redskins but lost in the final minutes from several blow defensive plays offensive too if you will. I didn’t get to see the Oakland game
but the Cowboys *could* have won that game. I didn’t get to see the Seattle game either, but I heard the Cowboys defense dominated that game also, but the offense stumbled around and couldn’t get anything done with several times from within the red zone. The defense again let a last minute drive all the way down the field and in for a score. As for Denver, Dallas could have bagged that game several times too but again, they didn’t.
Good teams have good records. Great team win close games. Think USC with all last minute wins. Good teams, think the Longhorns all those times they had so many wins, but just couldn’t win the big games. They have never had a championship under Mack Brown. This year they have the best chance. USC keeps flirting with disaster. Soon it will happen, but can the Longhorns do it?
When and if the Cowboys start having swagger again, then they will be a great team again. You have to win close (and big) games to develop swagger. (see Da Bears this year, The Bucs the year they won, and all those years of the Pats over the last few years) The Pats swagger is long gone this year… So is all the swagger the Eagles had over the last 2 years.
i think that the only thing keeping us from going from a “good” team to a great team is chemistry.
you can’t throw a bunch of new parts in the car and run 10’s in the quarter mile. it’s gotta be properly tuned. same with our boys. we got lots of new parts this year.
we can only hope BP can get em properly tuned up. hopefully this week!
I don’t think the offense can get on track this year. The way we play most games will be tight. I wouldnt put any lost on the defense this year. The D has given up 14,19,13 and 17 in the games we lost. Our offense leaves teams in games. I don’t think the way we play is going to change this year. I think we expect too much from the D. We need to stop putting games in the kickers hands and go for the kill.
Golden:
As Transplanted said, Dallas is a good team, not a great one, so what’re the differences between a great team and a good team? Starts with D and continues with OLine. Dallas has a great front in the D and CB’s, then you can only find good. And the OLine consistently plays from average to good. A good to great team can take advantage of those as evidenced in the Seattle and Denver games. This team does look like Playoffs material, but as Peter King said in MMQB, I wouldn’t be surprized if they reach the Super Bowl or if they lose the first playoff game.
eagles suck and they know and they’re just tryin to knock us off with them. they need to face a team on their levl like the red… deadskins. i think JJ and BP can handle T.O.
Cowboys need 1 of the top 3 Wide outs in the league. We want a superbowl. Everyone should stop crying about the overrated issues of T.O. None of were actually there like Parcells said. We don’t know what the hell happened in Philly
Hi Everybody!
Nice reporting their, Chief, on the ridiculousness that is the Terrell Owens story - and Oiler Troll commends you for doing so in a relevant and interesting way…unlike ESPN who just can’t seem to sa
