The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that Green Bay offensive line coach Larry Beightol feels he may lose his job if the Packers clean house after a disappointing 2005.

Good offensive line coaches are as valuable as good quarterbacks these days and Beightol ranks among the NFL’s best. From 2001 to 2004 his lines allowed an NFL-low 82 sacks. In previous stops with the Jets and Dolphins, Beightol’s lines ranked among the league’s best in sacks allowed.

I have no idea if Bill Parcells will shop for a new offensive line coach next year. First year man Tony Sparano has had to work with a motley bunch after injuries wiped out his projected tackle tandem of Flozell Adams and Jacob Rogers. Still, the league runs on the bottom line and for much of the year Sparano’s guys have not gotten it done. Dallas has surrendered 45 sacks, ranking 28th in the league. Only six teams have a lower yards-per-attempt average than Dallas’ 3.6. Last year’s line coach George Warhop was dismissed for similar numbers.

If Green Bay drops Beightol, I would not be surprised to see the Cowboys pursue him. He might be able to put RG Marco Rivera’s career back on track. Rivera went to Pro Bowls from 2002 through 2004 while working for Beightol. The coach might also help his new team lure young free-agent-to-be Kevin Barry. He’s far from a household name, but Beightol feels the 26 year old OT can be one of the league’s most dominating linemen.

This news barely rates mention, compared to everything else going on this week. But a Beightol firing could figure prominently in Dallas’ ‘06 plans. Watch this story.

I fired Sparano 5 weeks ago, I believe. Bring in anyone. There is precious little coaching going on in our O’line.

    Raf,

Nice info. .. Hudson Houck (MIA) and Pat Flaherty (NYG) are two of my favorites. Beigtol is gaining prestige with what Green Bay has done over the past few years. This goes right in line with what I had written a few weeks back. If I do have one disappointment with the “Parcells’ Cowboys” its the lack of developement on the O-line. Gurode, Tucker, Petitti, Johnson, and even Rogers have shown signs of promise, but have been frusteratingly inconsistant. Maybe signing Beightol will bring some credability to this line, and get these young players playing as a unit consistantly. .. But don’t give up on Sparano so quickly, Parcells has shown a great amount of loyalty to his players, will he show the same type of patience with his coaches?

    EricR,

It’s a hard balance, but Parcells personal plans figure into it. If he’s going to coach one more year, then he’ll move Sparano, perhaps back to TEs, where he did well, IMO. If he’s planning on staying a little longer, he might give Sparano another go on the line.

    CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said he expects quarterback Mark Brunell to start Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Brunell sprained his right knee in last week’s victory over the New York Giants, but he practiced Friday for the second straight day.
“Mark took most of the script and looked good,” Gibbs said. “I’m sure that’s the way we’ll start.”
Brunell was injured when he was sacked early in the third quarter against the Giants. Patrick Ramsey finished the game and has been preparing to start the Eagles game if Brunell can’t play.
“It’s tough for anyone to be on the sidelines, but it would be especially tough now,” Brunell said.
Cornerback Carlos Rogers did not practice Friday and is expected to miss his third straight game with a torn biceps.

then we take down seattle.which we outplayed during the regular season.sounds all good but this team is not as bad as the experts say.of those 6 games we lost 3 we gave away.i don’t think that’s going to happen again if we get in in.this has learned from their mistakes.they are dangerous if they get in.

If I understand correctly, if the skins and boys win, and Carolina loses, we still go to the playoffs. If thats the case, I’d rather end up facing the skins and knocking them out. Man that would be sweet.

Beightol should be signed as soon as he’s free from Green Bay.
Rafael, I agree Sparano should be kept for other duties.
Kevin Barry could be helpful if the Cowboys can still afford him.
The article says Barry was a guard at Arizona, but also says Barry can play guard or tackle, so at least he’s not a Peterman.
The Jaguars’ website lists NINETEEN coaches. Cowboys have 14, right?
Coaches don’t count under the salary cap, so can we have Beightol, Sparano, and Steve Hoffman, too?
I think Jerry’s been holdin out on us…and it’s time we started spending some of his money.

If Breightol is let go by the Packers, I say sign him and move Sparano back to Tight Ends coach.

    I meant Beightol, not Breightol.

With the troubles the defense has had lately, I’m wondering if Parcells is gonna be looking at someone who’s adept at coordinating the 3-4 defense. If so, then soon to be fired(assumed) coach Dom Capers will fit the bill.

    Joe:
I think that the problems of late have more to do with all the injuries in the LB corps and all the inexperience in the Defense. Shanle already was demoted to 42 play in favor of Fowler. Fujita and Ware have had problems in the outside. Spears and Canty look like rookies from time to time. I think that Zim has done a pretty good job with what he has, and he stands firm when talking about Bill’s successor.

Got something to say?
