Tucker In Flux

Posted: March 31, 2006 @ 11:20 am

You know that free agency is winding down when Torrin Tucker tops the news. Tampa Bay has signed the backup OT to an offer sheet, giving Dallas a week to match it. Tampa pursued several free agent OTs but didn’t sign any. Tucker would get a chance to start for the Bucs, which explains agent Jordan Woy’s comment that he received a “lot more” in the offer sheet than the $712,000 tender offer Tucker got from the Cowboys.

– As mentioned here yesterday, WR Eric Moulds appears closer to becoming a Texan. Moulds and Houston have finalized a long term contract and the teams are haggling over compensation.

The latest reports from Philadelphia deny the Eagles have pursued Moulds, raising the possibility that Moulds is Houston-bound. The Eagles were considered the Texans most serious competitor.

– The Redskins may add CB Jamar Fletcher to their long list of free agent signings.

– The Giants, meanwhile, are talking to WR Ricky Proehl and utilityman OL Grey Ruegamer.

Ah, dear Torrin, we knew you well…

    …well, maybe not

Usually I say hang onto decent o-line back ups with experience but I’m okay with his leaving if we pick up a tackle in the first couple of rounds of the draft.

Cant we just waive the seven day matching period and pay his travel to tampa and throw in a bag of footballs for good measure.

Atleast with Torrin we have someone who’s capable of being in a backup role, and he might even improve it’s not like he’s been playing for 6 or 7 years. I’d rather go into the draft looking at a guard like Spencer for the Rd. 2 pick. He can compete with Kosier for the starting job, and Kosier can then be another valuable backup at every spot on the line except center. One injury killed us last year cause we didn’t have the resources to figure out what worked best. It was just Tucker at left tackle, a rookie at right tackle, and that was what we had to work with. Either way Bill will figure it out. I doubt we run into the same problem as last year cause it was a big part of missing the playoffs.

OL is one of the hardest positions to develope and everybody’s talking about throwing a Rd 2 pick in there expecting he’ll look like he did in college. Doesn’t work that way. Sorry but I gotta believe, unless we luck out a little, that Tucker would play as good or better than any draftee. Is it impossible to develope atleast one of our own guys?

i don’t know. im not sure. but……… redskins signed a lot of free agents. do they have a ’system’ that they play by with? for example, cowboys have that bp family system filled with 3-4 position players. any additions to the team can mold in and fit with the system. same for nj devils in hockey. they are known for their defensive system and any players they sign were signed because they were thought to be able to mold with the sysmte. in other words, both teams just doesn’t go get the best player on the market, rather just getting the best player for their system. now, getting to my point, does the redskins have any?? because if not, they are in in a long season with all the new players and trying to get everything together on one page. they’d have a big learning curve to deal with. parcells already had a couple years to adjust to that. i think redskins will choke this year.

    Sean on March 31st, 2006 12:35 pm

It seems to me teh Redskin’s system is to throw mud against the wall and see what sticks. (it’s only money)Snyder thinks he can spend his way into a playoff team.

Regarding Tucker-isn’t his Mom the one that BP keeps having these heart to heart talks with? Those reports always struck me as strange. You would think a grown man wouldn’t have to be influenced so much by his mom.

The redskins suck they add players for the name and not for there quality someone tell me when was the last time you heard Adam Archuleta any way the cowboys have made significant improvements to area’s needed all that’s really left to do is sure up the o-line backups get a free safety who can cover I’m not that worried about run support with the free saftey because roy will be in the box more this year and with t.o there witten will have a monster year and we will I repeat will be in the superbowl probably against Indy and Mike vanderjagt will kick the game winner and the punch peyton manning in the face like I”m MONEY

As to Tucker, would ANY Dallas fan be upset if he were to leave? I don’t know about Dallas, they may just choose to stay pat with their present offensive tackle situation, and draft a player like Spencer who is flexible and will grow quickly towards a starting position inside…

We have quite a bit of money invested into Tucker. I can’t see BP just letting him get away unless Tampa Bay is offering the house and he refuses to match. it takes a while for the normal left tackle to develop.

  26. 26
    bigmoney on March 31st, 2006 2:55 pm

Tucker played guard at Auburn and both tackle positions for us. He is also only 26 years old. We would be crazy to just let him go!!!

  27. 27
    tyler2 on March 31st, 2006 3:13 pm

If we let Tucker walk then it must mean we are looking to draft a Tackle early in the fraft. Tucker’s age is a plus but I wonder about his work ethic.

I heard on the radio this morning that Marcus Coleman will visit the Dolphins next week.

    bigmoney:
For a reason he went undrafted, probably for the same reasons that we’ve seen while ha has played RT and LT, he has all the physical qualities, his problems are mental and you can’t coach those, you can only hope that through motivation and confidence his problems don’t surface.

It’s obvious that that hasn’t work in this case.

  29. 29
    bigmoney on March 31st, 2006 3:17 pm

    tyler2

Having a great work ethic is the main reason Tucker made the 53 man cut last year and Vollers was cut. BP called him the most physically gifted O-lineman on the team. He just needs some seasoning.

  30. 30
    eightball on March 31st, 2006 3:19 pm

Pat Kirwin (NFL Radio) claims that the Bucs want him as a starter & have offered him starter type $$. Tucker is a decent backup (that is it). If the Bucs want to sign him to be a starter and pay him starter $$ then we cut him loose.

Did anyone notice the column on cowboysplus.com that had a NFL scout stating Kosier is an upgrade?
    http://www.cowboysplus.com/columnists/mmosley/stories/033106cpmosley.78087181.html
Read a portion of it below:

But in talking to one longtime scout who’s followed his career, I came away with more of an appreciation for what he can bring to the offense.

This scout said he thinks Kosier will be a considerable upgrade at left guard. And yes, I reminded him that Pro Bowler Larry Allen had been manning that position.

He said that some members of the 49ers’ organization, which picked Kosier in the seventh round of the 2002 draft, said he was a better player than offensive tackle Kwame Harris, who the club picked in the first round in 2003. Harris is San Francisco’s starting right tackle.

Kosier was playing left tackle for the 49ers in 2004 when he supposedly dominated Tampa Bay defensive end Simeon Rice in a game. Now, I’m not saying Kosier is an upgrade over Allen. I’m just saying that someone whom I’ve trusted for several years seems to think he is.

  32. 32
    bigmoney on March 31st, 2006 3:25 pm

The 2 things that Tucker has are his physical attributes and mean streak. The latter is the main thing that is missing from most of our o-line and is absolutely necessary. Larry had it.

    Tex on March 31st, 2006 3:48 pm

Mother Tucker was the only reason this slug made the team. Vollers should have been the swing OT; instead, Tucker started 10 games and gave up the most sacks in the league… including six sacks in consecutive weeks to Jared Allen (KC) and Pat Daniels (wash). There was no way he was coming back anyway and I am glad that Tampa is on the schedule.

    Impatient on March 31st, 2006 4:11 pm

    Here’s the deal on Ngata
    http://www.draftdaddy.com/prospects/halotiNgata.cfm

Here’s a good quote from it:

As true fans of the NFL draft know, every year the “planet theory” comes into play – this theory, postulated by George Young and endorsed by Bill Parcells is as follows: there are only so many big, fat men _on the planet Earth_ who can move with agility, quickness and speed, and when a team gets a chance to take one in the draft, they will leap at that chance.

Similar to Dewayne Robertson out of Kentucky in 2003, Ngata is very young, blessed with rare physical attributes and somewhat limited productivity due playing on a relatively suspect defense and the double and even triple team matchups forced upon him weekly. Also similar to Dewayne Robertson, Ngata has the size/speed ratio that makes him a physical freak, able to take one offensive lineman in each hand and push them both back toward the QB.

  44. 44
    bigmoney on March 31st, 2006 4:22 pm

    Impatient,

The main thing that I took note of from this article was his 6 pack hanging over his pants on every picture. The one thing that he does well is take up space, but BP wants his DTs making plays behind the line of scrimidge.

Ngata will not bull rush many NFL guards. Dewayne Robertson found this out rather quickly with the Jets.

  45. 45
    bigmoney on March 31st, 2006 4:28 pm

DT is a huge need in this draft. If Bunkley isn’t there in the 1st then wait until the 3rd or 4th (if we get one). We then take McCargo or Dvoracek. If we can get both that would be gravy. They are all BP style DTs.

  46. 46
    Impatient on March 31st, 2006 4:33 pm

    bigmoney,
I agree whole heartedly. Just thought i would put that up there for everyones consumption since we were talking about him. And speakin of random things like that…

Here is a foxsports article that is mostly about holmgren but check out this little blub at the bottom… Kinda makes you go hmmmm.

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/5455024

Quote so you dont have to read the whole thing:

But the most fascinating result of Holmgren’s decision to play out his contract could put him an enviable position. Despite the defeat to Pittsburgh, he remains one of the sport’s elite coaches. He could name his price as a GM/head coach. And you can bet the first rumor to surface will have Holmgren headed to Dallas to replace Bill Parcells in 2007 or 2008. And if that doesn’t hold water, how about Holmgren heading a potential new franchise in Los Angeles?

Mel Kiper was just on ESPN and he predicted Dallas picking FS Jason Allen at No. 18

I don’t think we’ll take a FS that high, and Kiper’s pick just solidifed it. This guy is always wrong

  54. 54
Rafael Vela on March 31st, 2006 6:16 pm

    RParr,

Yep, he’s always wrong and he’s in his “mega-churn” mode. Late in March and early in April, Mel turns out lots of mocks that hold little to no resemblane to one another. Players fly up the charts then go down.

He had Duece Latui in a first round mock not too long ago. Duece is a fine player but will go in either rounds two or three. He had a really sloppy mock out two weeks ago where he talked about the depth of tight ends and mentioned as many as four would go in round one.

The problem? Nobody else had more than two going in round one. In addition, he had rankings by position at the bottom of the page. They listed Georgia’s Leonard Pope as the #2 tight end.

But in Mel’s mock draft, he didn’t include Pope in his first round. Sounds like something he dictated while he was driving in the car, or something.

As for Allen, the highest I’ve seen him ranked by anybody is in the 30 to 40 range. It sounds like more drive time fantasy for Mr. Mel.

  55. 55
    Tunahelper on March 31st, 2006 6:25 pm

Here it is fellas. @ 18 Manny Lawson to be the perfect bookend to DeMarcus Ware. Then in the second round Darnell Bing. Defense is set for a long time!!!

  57. 57
Mr. Bill on March 31st, 2006 9:52 pm

    Rafael,

The thing about Jason Allen is that he suffered a dislocated hip in (I believe) October. That knocked him way down on the draft boards, since some thought it might be a career-ending injury. But Allen had an excellent Combine, where he reportedly ran a 4.32 in the 40. Most now feel that Allen is completely healed. Those who do, are moving him back up on their draft boards. Allen was projected as a top-20 or -30 player before the injury.

For instance, Draft Scout currently has Allen ranked as the #13 overall player in the draft. Couch Scout - #24; Draft Blitz - #23; Huddle Report - #18; Great Blue North - #25; Draft Board Insider - #24; Consensus - #15.

Whether they draft him or not, if he’s still there, the Cowboys will have to consider him.

Mr. Bill on April 2nd, 2006 12:53 pm

    Raul,

Tucker would have gone into training camp, as the #4 OT (at best), behind Adams, Fabini, and Petitti. We also have Colombo, Snell, and Washburn, plus whomever we might draft.

Got something to say?
