7th Round Thread
April 30, 2006
The Cowboys finished the day with an unwhelming OT duo, who make me wonder if Bill Parcells hit the buffet early.
Dallas first took Weber State OT Pat McQuistan, the twin of Paul McQuistan, the Raiders third round OT pick. Paul gets all the ink — there is NO information on Pat available. I wondered if maybe somebody in the draft room forgot to remove Paul’s card from their board yesterday.
Dallas ended the day by taking Texas Tech OT E.J. Whitley. Whitley gets high marks for his versatility — he played all OL spots at Tech — and his leadership. I’m troubled by one glaring fact: he has very short arms, according to one book, which should move him to guard. However, his weakness is run blocking, since Tech’s offense is so pass intensive.
As I said, an underwhelming duo at first glance.
6th Round Thread

Dallas selects Louisville DT Montavious Stanley with the 182nd overall pick. Stanford NT Babatunde Oshinowo was drafted one spot ahead. With Stanley looking like an interior lineman, I wonder if Dallas has their guy snagged from them as Daryn Colledge was in round two yesterday?
In the division, the Eagles and Giants appear to be having strong drafts. The Redskins? Rocky McIntosh better be really good, cause he’s the only pick they have in the first four rounds. And didn’t Washington already give up next year’s 2nd rounder to the Jets to move up and get McIntosh? I tell you, the ghost of George “the future is now” Allen is running their drafts via a Ouija board.

Dallas trades up with the Jets to the 5th spot in round 5, (138th overall) and selects FS Pat Watkins of Florida State.

A View From the Gallery
Here’s an appetizer from the Fox Sports net guys on the atmosphere in Radio City Music Hall yesterday. I didn’t involve the Cowboys directly, but it did involve a Cowboy. Enjoy:
…after an annoying three minutes of a convoluted E-A-G-L- (still going) -E-S chant, the Jets fans revolt. After all, the J-E-T-S, JETS! JETS! chant is their bread and butter… The Jets fans quickly unite, mobilize, and rock Radio City Muic Hall with an “Eagles Suck” chant. But they’re just getting started. This is THEIR city  we’re a long way from the Liberty Bell and cheesesteaks. After some back and forth, the Jets fans drop the proverbial hammer, delivering a room-rocking “Terrell Owens, Terrell Owens” chant. The Eagles faithful have nothing to say in response.
More news and fun as it appears.
10:10 — 4th round underway. Houston starts it with Wisconsin TE Owen Daniels and Philly follows with Georgia OG Max Jean-Gilles.
11:30 — Dallas selects LSU WR/KR Skyler Green. Special teams coach Bruce DeHaven is thrown a bone. But this is awfully early, IMO for a return man. Fourth round is the last leg of day one in my book. This is becoming the “show me” draft. Green better become the second coming of Dave Meggett, or this is a reach. This also puts the butterfingered Tyson Thompson on double-critical alert.

Third Round Thread

As the draft hurtles towards Dallas’ 80th pick.
Dallas trades down with Jacksonville and gets a 4th round pick, number 125 overall.
Dallas selects Jason Hatcher of Grambling State with the 92nd pick.
Jason who? I’m trying to find out myself. He’s not high in my draft books, though one has him as a late riser who really came on in his last two seasons. Pro scouts know about him though — Rick Gosselin’s Top 100, which is compiled from Pro draft boards, ranks Hatcher 88th overall.
Second Round Thread
April 29, 2006
Dallas selects Notre Dame TE Anthony Fasano with the 53rd pick, acquired from the Jets.
We can debate the position, but we can’t debate the value of the pick. Fasano is rated as mid 2nd rounder in every draft book I have and I’ve got four of them. This shows me Dallas is really going for it now. He fills the TE/FB need I spoke about weeks ago and gives Dallas a far better receiving option than Dan Campbell offered last year. People mention Ryan Hannam, but remember, he was a low cost pick for depth. He’s still considered a project, which is why Seattle let him go. He was not the starter there. Fasano was drafted to be a starter. You’re going to see nothing but two TE sets as the base offense next year on 1st and 2nd downs.
And yes, this was something heavily debated on this site weeks ago. See here for proof. (Scroll down to the TE/FB section.)
We’re nearing Dallas’ pick at 49. Some interesting risers and droppers. Winston Justice became this year’s Flozell Adams, the OT who always falls a good round lower than he was rated.
Tennessee has just taken LenDale White at 45. I think Dallas will go O-line, with Eric Winston and Daryn Colledge topping that list right now. We’ll see.
More Draft Log
April 29, 2006
Update: Got a call from somebody at the Tavern. I’m going there for the next couple of hours until the 2nd round gets underway. It’s 2:45 Austin time right now. I’m the guy with the “NFC Champs Back-to-Back” t-shirt with Emmitt, Michael, Moose, Nate and Jay Novack on it.
Note: I know you’re having server problems. I am too. The program has eaten many of my posts today. Raul’s been jousting with our hosts for days over this and we will get it fixed as soon as we can. Thanks for your patience. I’m going to take a brief break and come back at the top of the 2nd round. If anybody wants to meet in Austin to toast the new Cowboy and Cowboys to be, e-mail me at ravela87@hotmail.com.
2:06 — The Cowboys select LB Bobby Carpenter.
This has become a popular pick of late, but I want to remind everybody that I predicted this last September. And yes, I am available for trips to Vegas.
1:54 — The Vikings select LB Chad Greenway.
1:45 — The Dolphins take DB Jason Allen.
1:32 — The Rams take CB Tye Hill.
1:26 — The Eagles take DT Brodrick Bunkley.
Things look pretty good for Dallas right now. If the Rams go for a defensive back, Miami could take one of the Lawson/Carpenter duo and Dallas would still have a shot at one.
1:15 — The Browns select OLB Kamerion Wimbley.
Fasten your seatbelts, folks, the run on linebackers has just started.
1:01 — The Ravens trade up a spot and take NT Haloti Ngata.
Brilliant. Cleveland GM Phil Savage pit the Eagles vs. the Ravens and got an extra picks. He’ll probably try and extort the Eagles too. Trade up and get Bunkley or we’ll take him. If they can pull that off, they’ll likely take Wimbley. Inspired.
12:47 — Trade! The Broncos move up and take QB Jay Cutler.
More good news for Dallas, in that Denver was most recently predicted to take a LB. The Rams, who signed Will Witherspoon to team with Dexter Coakley, are far more likely to take a cornerback at 15.
12:35 — The Cards select QB Matt Leinart.
12:31 — The Lions select OLB Ernie Sims.
12:25 — The Bills select S Donte Whitner.
This is great for Dallas in that it keeps the d-linemen Bunkley and Ngata on the board.
Draft Log 2006:
April 29, 2006
Okay, I’m back. The second 1st round thread I was using has for some reason been designated “private.” Anyway, we’re at the 45th pick, two OTs are on the board, as is LenDale White. If Dallas gets White, should I demand $10 and let the Palisades write his “I Told You So,” piece anyway?
12:21 — ESPN is reporting two teams want to move up to eight. The Eagles, who want Bunkley and the Broncos, who want Matt Leinart.
12:15 — Buffalo is on the clock and this is where the uncertainly begins. I’ve heard conflicing reports in recent days. One that they want to move down. The second that they’re staying at 8 and taking Brodrick Bunkley. They’re going 4-3 and want a DT to pair with Larry Tripplett. They may also take Haloti Ngata. Who knows?
12:14 — The Raiders select DB Michael Huff.
This is the first potential bit of bad news for Dallas in that it shows the defensive players are rising. This will likely have a ripple effect on the LB position. Detroit, at 9, who was projected to get Huff in so many mocks, will not likely take LB Ernie Sims, beginning the run on LBs.
12:05 — The 49ers select TE Vernon Davis.
12:00 — The Packers select LB A.J. Hawk.
No surprises so far. And the draft is going a little faster than predicted, because there have been no trades. The real fun, I predict, will begin with Buffalo at the eighth pick.
11:47 — The Jets select OT D’Brickashaw Ferguson, to a smattering of cheers but mostly boos from the Radio City Music Hall Jets’ gallery.
11:35 — The Titans select QB Vince Young. No hesitancy there. They took seven minutes while the Texans took fifteen to announce a choice already known.
11:28 — The New Orleans Saints draft RB Reggie Bush.
Back in business folks. The Tavern went bust. Bad wifi. 30 minutes of moving around and trying to get a connection. Sorry folks, don’t go. I’m back at the base.
I may try another place for a meet and greet after Dallas makes its first selection, but I’m here in the meantime.
Late Night Crumbs
April 28, 2006
Wow!
That’s the reaction I got from my sources on the Texans signing of DE Mario Williams.  They are all surprised that Houston passed on Reggie Bush.  The consensus is that New Orleans will take Bush at two or swap spots with the Jets. Both teams have Bush as the top player on their boards.
“I’ve been told by NFL guys that this year is going to be crazy, but I never expected it to start this early,” said one.
Two intriguing Cowboys’ related tid-bits:
– A source who covers a team picking late in the first round thinks LB Bobby Carpenter will go to either the Eagles or the Cowboys. There could be some validity to this.  In 2004, Arkansas OL Shawn Andrews was a top Dallas target. The Eagles traded up to 16 and grabbed him. Last year, the Cowboys hosted close to 20 players at a pre-draft banquet a few days before draft. Three of those players, RB Ryan Moats (3rd), FS Sean Considine (4th) and OT Todd Herremens (4th) were selected by Philadelphia.
– The Cowboys had RB LenDale White in for a second visit just a couple of days ago.
The Best Composite Board
April 28, 2006
Rick Gosselin of the DMN released his top 100 board late this afternoon. We’ve give you partial boards compiled from the top draft services, but Gosselin’s board carries much more weight because it’s created from info he has gotten from NFL GMs, coaches and scouts. In other words, this is the closest view we’ll get to what a real NFL draft board looks like.
What does it tells us? Nothing we didn’t already figure out on our own. OLB/DE tweeners Manny Lawson’s and Bobby Carpenter’s respective values fit Dallas’ draft position; Lawson is rated 16th overall and Carpenter 18th.
In the second round, looking five spots up and five spots down from Dallas’ 49th pick, you’ll see potential draftees like S Daniel Bullocks, C Chris Chester, OT Daryn Colledge, G Deuce Lutui, DB Daniel Manning and TE Anthony Fasano (53).
Draft Gathering
April 28, 2006
We’re set for The Tavern at 12th and Lamar. I’ll be there around 11 am tomorrow and will try to get room upstairs. Hope to see all the Austin locals as we cheer on another draft day like ‘05.
Going Camping — the 5 & 10 Solution
April 28, 2006
Cowboys Blog is going to Oxnard again this summer, and we need your help. Plane fare, hotel and rental car fees add up. But we’ve grown in that time, so Raul and I figure that if just five percent of you donated $10 dollars each, we’d be fine. If you would like to contribute, use the PayPal link in the left hand column.
We can promise the best coverage you’ll see. Not that sausage-like “catch of the day/who’s hot/who’s not” filler that is mostly cut and pasted from the PR department’s press releases. We’re talking about long-form reports like this.
We think you’ll agree it’s money well spent.
Mid-Day Rumors
April 28, 2006
Some recent info to come through the grapevine:
– I’ve been told word now is that the Bills will stay in the 8th spot and select DT Brodrick Bunkley.
– The Patriots are considering moving up, either for CB Tye Hill or NT Haloti Ngata.
– Denver appears to be the front runner in the Javon Walker sweepstakes and may offer a package of Ashley Lelie and a 2nd round pick. The Broncos have two 2nd rounders.
Put Your Money Where Your Mock Is - First Day
April 28, 2006
Here’s your chance to be a prognosticating star. List your selections for the first day. Here are mine. I’m going to assume Dallas stays put. They did move in ‘04 but most of the time in the Parcells era, they’ve stayed in their spot and selected.
- Round 1 — Bobby Carpenter, OLB, Ohio State.
- Round 2 — Daryn Colledge, OT, Boise State.
- Round 3 — Anthony Smith, FS, Syracuse.
I’ve said more than enough on Carpenter. The Cowboys will leave day one with an offensive lineman.  The top guards like Davin Joseph and OTs like Eric Winston will likely be off the board. Colledge gets the nod because he can play LT and once you get past D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Winston Justice and Winston, the list of tackles projected to the left side as pros gets awfully thin. He’ll need some time to improve his strength but with Flozell Adams returning, he’ll have it. Colledge has seen his stock rise while Jon Scott’s has dropped into the third round.
Smith fits the Parcells profile of a smart, tough centerfielder. He doesn’t make mental mistakes and isn’t afraid to throw his body around. He was lost playing on a horrible Syracuse defense last year, but people who have seen tape tell me he still made plays. There were times when it seemed he was playing alone.
Your turn.
