Draft Log 2006:

Posted: April 29, 2006 @ 11:29 am

Okay, I’m back. The second 1st round thread I was using has for some reason been designated “private.” Anyway, we’re at the 45th pick, two OTs are on the board, as is LenDale White. If Dallas gets White, should I demand $10 and let the Palisades write his “I Told You So,” piece anyway?

12:21 — ESPN is reporting two teams want to move up to eight. The Eagles, who want Bunkley and the Broncos, who want Matt Leinart.

12:15 — Buffalo is on the clock and this is where the uncertainly begins. I’ve heard conflicing reports in recent days. One that they want to move down. The second that they’re staying at 8 and taking Brodrick Bunkley. They’re going 4-3 and want a DT to pair with Larry Tripplett. They may also take Haloti Ngata. Who knows?

12:14 — The Raiders select DB Michael Huff.

This is the first potential bit of bad news for Dallas in that it shows the defensive players are rising. This will likely have a ripple effect on the LB position. Detroit, at 9, who was projected to get Huff in so many mocks, will not likely take LB Ernie Sims, beginning the run on LBs.

12:05 — The 49ers select TE Vernon Davis.

12:00 — The Packers select LB A.J. Hawk.

No surprises so far. And the draft is going a little faster than predicted, because there have been no trades. The real fun, I predict, will begin with Buffalo at the eighth pick.

11:47 — The Jets select OT D’Brickashaw Ferguson, to a smattering of cheers but mostly boos from the Radio City Music Hall Jets’ gallery.

11:35 — The Titans select QB Vince Young. No hesitancy there. They took seven minutes while the Texans took fifteen to announce a choice already known.

11:28 — The New Orleans Saints draft RB Reggie Bush.

Back in business folks. The Tavern went bust. Bad wifi. 30 minutes of moving around and trying to get a connection. Sorry folks, don’t go. I’m back at the base.

I may try another place for a meet and greet after Dallas makes its first selection, but I’m here in the meantime.

Vince Young to the Titans……3rd pick

    Derrick on April 29th, 2006 11:39 am

First major mistake in the draft as far as I’m concerned taking Young.

If Matt Leinart or Jay Cutler somehow fall into our laps at 18, would you take him?

Young taken before either of these guys is a surprise. Young will have a lot of pressure on him, being the first QB taken. He’ll learn well behind McNair.

    sharkz on April 29th, 2006 11:52 am

I agree Derrick,Young is going to be in for a shock in the NFL,he’s going to have a HUGE learning curve IMO….

itd be hard to pass them up but i always worry about drafting a qb in the first. i heard its almost a 50% chance of making it as a nfl qb, not good enough odds for me.

Cmon Cowboys! Get Carpenter! His dad played for BP,he has the same agent as BP(Sexton)and he should take some double teams and tight end routes off Ware’s back……

Been reading for months but finally registered and decided to join the conversations.

Anyone hearing anything about Javon Walker to Philly? I was as excited about taking TO away from Philly as I was to have him. . .but if the Eagles get Walker, that could be very big and dangerous to the Cowobys! Thoughts?

    On Young:
I understand the hesitation. However, 1. He’s a winner. 2. He can play now, making plays with his legs OR sit for 1 or 2 yrs and learn under McNair or Volek. Through him in at WR or H-Back for 7-10 plays a game. Thoughts?

  16. 16
    mike on April 29th, 2006 12:09 pm

see him as a slash for now and develope. to good an athlete to sit for 1-2 years

  17. 17
    sharkz on April 29th, 2006 12:15 pm

    GMoney,
I agree Young is a gifted athlete and a definate winner. It’s just that he has always played in a very different system than he will face in the NFL,he’s gonna have to learn sooooo much that it’s gonna take a long time at best. He’s exciting when he breaks one,but it’s the best of the best in the NFL,everyone is bigger, meaner and faster and running QB’s can get hurt and killed.

  18. 18
    mike on April 29th, 2006 12:16 pm

qb’s are dropping i thought raiders would take 1 for sure

    Sharkz:
Agreed on all points…but this guy seems to rise to any challenge. We shall see. I’ll tell you this: Tennessee just scored some national TV games. Behind the Cowboys, I’ll be paying close attention to the Titans and Young.

  28. 28
    BrianL on April 29th, 2006 12:45 pm

Good job Buffalo. Could they not find someone to trade with? Was Whitner really that high on peoples draft boards.

Really one pick behind Huff…I don’t see that he is even close to the same talent as Huff.

Actually Mike Mayock had Whitner on his mock at that pick…I was scratching my head at that too.

If it’s going to be this bad during the season, it will suck! It’s great that this blog is doing so well, but you’ll lose a lot of people if this keeps up. Perhaps you should start charging for membership, if that’s what it takes to be able to handle the increased traffic!

    ManTab,

I’ve been asked by my sources — who are real insiders — about them. They suspect the RR guys are making inflammatory stuff up right before the draft to increase subscriptions.

  55. 55
    mdlusk on April 29th, 2006 2:27 pm

Now give me an OL or two, a safety and a space eating NT. Then throw in a WR in the last rounds, and I’ll be happy. All holes or semi-holes addressed.

  56. 56

despite the fact that houston passed up on reggie bush, if they got both williams and justice, i think it would be a coup for them. considering they were thinking of trading down for dbrick, getting the second rated tackle in the draft in the second round is a bargain

They picked the #1 OT and the #1 C. they can still get Spencer, Jean-Gilles, Justice, Winston, Jimmy Williams, Sinorice Moss, DeMeco Ryans, Lendale White… they pick again in 5 picks. They should have 3 impactful starters in from their first three picks. I bet they’re happy not to have traded.

    joey2zs on April 29th, 2006 4:55 pm

Roger Macintosh??? HOLY SMOKES. I can just imagine that the Redskins’ war room… it’s full of chimpanzees hanging from monkey bars throwing bananas at Danny Snyder who’s working the phones, getting advice from his monkey crew. “What’s that you say, monkey? Trade with the Jets to get the 35th pick in order to draft a linebacker who will only be a special teamer his whole career and will still be on the board in the early 4th round? OK… Done and done… the Jets agreed! I love you monkeys. We’re going to the Super Bowl!”

    clam625 on April 29th, 2006 4:55 pm

giles is a larry allen clone lemme tell ya. my short list is gettin smaller with only eric winston, max jean giles, and ko simpson left. lets hope they last

  131. 131
    ManTab on April 29th, 2006 4:56 pm

Darnel Bing is the other safety left according to espn. At Guard you have Gilles…or you take McNeil or Winston (tackles)

    Gmoney on April 29th, 2006 5:15 pm

Nothing specific, just thought it would be interesting to note the first rounders and other premium players that we will see first hand this year.

  143. 143
    Thor on April 29th, 2006 5:15 pm

Their opponents will face Bledsoe, JJ, TO, Glenn, Whitten, Ware, Spears, Carpenter, Williams, Newman, Henry, etc…..

My point is I’m happy about our odds.

Didn’t Denver get Walker in a trade with GB? GB got their 37th pick which they then traded to ATL, in which they picked Jimmy Williams….lotta stuff to test my memory though so not totally sure

Strange draft. Lotta reaches. Good trade up by Philly for Justice.

Looks like the 49 pick will have it’s choice of any from the following:

    Eric Winston OT
    Daryn Colledge OT
    Marcus McNeil OT
    Ko Simpson S
    Darnell Bing S
    Max Jean-Giles G
    Charles Spencer G

Could Gabe Watson last until our 3rd?

Wish we could trade Kevin Burnett for a late 2nd/early 3rd. Looks like a wasted pick with Carp.

    Slide910 on April 29th, 2006 5:22 pm

The closer he got to 49 the more I wanted him. Probably for the best we need OL/FS help the most. He would have been a glamor pick

  151. 151

I would trade down about three sports if that gives us a fourth…I have no idea about the values…
