Third Round Thread

As the draft hurtles towards Dallas’ 80th pick.

Dallas trades down with Jacksonville and gets a 4th round pick, number 125 overall.

Dallas selects Jason Hatcher of Grambling State with the 92nd pick.

Jason who? I’m trying to find out myself. He’s not high in my draft books, though one has him as a late riser who really came on in his last two seasons. Pro scouts know about him though — Rick Gosselin’s Top 100, which is compiled from Pro draft boards, ranks Hatcher 88th overall.

Jason Spitz is an option here at 80.

But Raf is really hot so I am saying Anthony Smith.

    I like Brandon Williams too!

    we got our 4th.

Is it me or are we going back to the Jerry Jones drafts where bodies are more important than players. It just seems like they think they hit on late round guys so they want to collect picks.

I don’t know. They could go OL.

But their first two picks are for guys they project as ‘06 starters, so I’m going to say they get one more. And where do they need a starter? FS.

Mayock just broke down anthony smith and sure made me want the guy. He said he would be a great centerfielder that he’s smart and takes great angles, good tackler in space. Sounds what we need what does everyone think about him?

Marcus Coleman can be a decent starter. IMO, we need a starter (or two) at Guard and a starter at Tackle. Otherwise, as they said on the ticket “We have an O-Line made up of pretty goof backups”.

thanks but I didn’t predict Fassano. I said they would get a TE or FB of staring quality in either free agency or in the draft. That’s all. It’s not like I wrote the guy. I had Daryn Colledge, but the Packers got him at 47.

  26. 26
    Slide910 on April 29th, 2006 8:35 pm

Well obviously they didn’t want Mcneil or Smith. One of the two guys they wanted will be there for their pick, and the extra 6th and 7th rounder we got earlier will help us move up in the 4th if we need to.

    Site issues have been awful!

OK, clearly most of us are not qualified GM’s. Not only did Dallas not take Gilles, Scott, O’Callaghan, Simpson, Watkins, Watson or D.Williams, neither did anyone else.
Not sure why they’ve dropped. There must be a reason. The good news is that if we still want one of those guys, one of them is likely to still be there with our newly acquired 4th.

So what do we still have tomorrow?
    a 4th, a 5th 2 6th’s and 2 7th’s?

The BPA at a position of strength is the WPA. Tom Landry could make BPA work. I don’t think BP is a Landry. Draft Grade so far: C-. Draft of Carpenter, Eric Winston, Pat Watkins grades at A-. Do you get the feeling someone at the Cowboys was trying to show us that they’re smarter than we are? Just a thought. We spent a lot of money on TO. Will TO be able to make all those glorious catches when the ball is being thrown by a QB on the ground? The lesson from last year is that a “project” OL is an anchor around the neck. Nothings changed.

For the record, just looking at the guys physical numbers, Hatcher looks like an animal. And as I posted above I think if the pick pans out, then Spears to NT is a real possibility in the future. Why the tears Y’all? For the first time in almost a decade we are good enough to take the BPA. I see Rick Gosselin rated our new TE as the best of the second round TEs, said he reminded scouts of an ole boy named MARK BAVARO, think BP might have some good memories of that guy? Hatcher played TE until his last year in school, Defensive/FULLBACK thoughts from BP? (ala the fridge or our old LB Robert Thomas)
Remember the early-mid 90s Dline rotation? Why did we have 7 starter quality guys in 4 spots? Fresh 4th Qtr legs anyone? Ellis going? How about Ellis having his career extended by playing 50% of the snaps instead of 90%?
OK the only guy I was happy about at first blush was Bobby C. but more research and taking a historical view ~1 benefit of getting older~ made me remember why I too trust in BP

    Day One:

Carpenter – Excellent choice, should start at SOLB from season opener. Could be 16 game starter.

Fasano – Good choice, should start in 2TE base offense. Should be 16 game starter.

Hatcher – Surprise choice, I had not heard of him but he seems like he could be a solid player. Judging by Bill’s track record of picking good front seven players I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. Rotation player.

Picked up a forth, sixth and seventh.

    palisades,
2 receivers and 1 RB. no FB. they will shift the TEs around alot. the benefit is running that formation for 3 downs so defenses cant load up for a run or pass on 3rd. the trade off is the TEs had better be good lead blockers.

I suppose Fasano could be useful as a blocker since will need that, but certainly not as a pass catcher since Bledsoe will have difficulty with the rush. Apparently the obvious fact that our OL held us back as no other part of our team did is lost on some. I guess being a BP sycophant impairs one’s judgment.

    LOL Den,

I agree I would have liked an offensive lineman but I am still happy with the picks we got. Max Giles and Watson seem to have turned everybody off, maybe there perceived overweight or laziness has scared people off. There is nothing worse than drafting a good talent high and being unable to get anything out of him because of motivation problems. I don’t mind the idea of drafting what is considered a lesser talent but who is much more committed to football and the team.

Some of these negative posts sound exactly like those coming in right after the start of free agency. “I can’t belive this…I can’t believe that…” Then after everything was said and done the posts sounded like this was the best offseason in Cowboys history. Why didn’t we get Ko Simpson? I had Dallas picking Ko in the 2nd round and he was still there in the late 3rd and we passed? We needed a safety badly and we lost out of one that was pretty high on my draft board. I think this was a big and bad mistake by the cowboys even though I have seen this guy compared to Richard Seymore, I do not think this makes this team better this year.

  76. 76
    Slide910 on April 29th, 2006 10:34 pm

If we run a 2 TE set with both TEs being the pass catching type, is it similar to OLBs in the 3-4 defense where you benefit from the other team not knowing which guy you’ll send? Usually you see 2 TE sets where one is block oriented, but after we drafted Fasono Kiper said he wasn’t so great at blocking, but terrific at catching….could he mostly be picked to be the heir to Witten incase we’re unable to pay him enough next offseason?

  77. 77

Jason Hatcher 5th on the draft chart? I’ll assume you were being somewhat sarcastic. Not all the 22 starters on the team can be takin in the 1st round. Hatcher was the BPA at our 3rd round pick according to Bill freaking Parcells. Must Raf remind you of the studs BP has found in the 3rd round. Hatcher must be more than decent, and several guys on here may be on to something with the moving around of personel. I’ve had time to digest our first day in the draft, and it’s not as bad as it seems.

There was a time when, if you drafted a player out of Grambling he was considered a pretty good bet to be a player. I haven’t seen him play, but I will be checking my contact in Northeast Louisiana about him. I would say lets see what the offensive line shows us in training camp before we jump off the dock. You didn’t really think that any rookie was going to come in a do better than people we have on the field now, did you. There was only one offensive lineman that was considered NFL ready and it sounded like he had some warts too. If the lineman that went in round 1 and 2 become super starters next year I will be amazed. Many on this blog were drooling over Davis and Mercedes at tightend, but the cost for them would have been too expensive and we wouldn’t have gotten the linebacker we wanted. Fasano, if he works out will make our offense better on the ground and the air. The offensive linemen that we picked up and maybe some we still get in the draft will compete with those we have and maybe we will have a serviceable offense. They won’t be able to concentrate on any, one area of our offense. We have two maybe three excellent running backs. We have two good wideouts and a up and comer. Two tightends that can catch in the crease will make us dangerous on offense. The offensive line doesn’t have to be great just average and Bledsoe will have the time to pick defenses apart. Just the musings of a long time Cowboy fan

  83. 83
Mr. Bill on April 30th, 2006 12:56 am

    ThePalisades,

It means the Cowboys will run the same two-TE offense they ran in 2005, only more so. It will also give us more flexibility, since Fasano is a far greater receiving threat than Campbell, and is a decent blocker to boot. It will make it much more difficult for our opponents to figure out what we are doing, since we invariably ran towards Campbell’s side, and threw to Witten.

We lose some in blocking, but gain in deception and receiving ability.

Let me just say this much…Today I went great with the first pick, to who is that..glad I had my espn draft mag with me…Anyway, point I want to make since everyone is talking about 2TE sets, some people call it a Jumbo set..to me you kind of dictate what type of player personnel you have on the field..the nfl is really technical in terms of packagae defense, base, nickle, dime etc…with a 2te set you basically are bringing in an extra lb and taking out a db. with to on one side and terry glen on the other, you are looking at (not everytime) but I’m pretty sure you are going to end up with a cover three look over the top..that means you SLB and WLB will be playing man on our TE’s…the odds favor us I believe, with enough reading of our second pick and witten I believe we can provide some pretty big mismathces…the 2te look also allows you max protection anytime you in case you have ol problems which we do and we went 2tes alot which we did, but with this we get a little more flexibility and the opportunity for fassano to contribute immediatley..now lets not forget jones and barber will be in a single back set and that should be interesting to see since the defense will be bunched in more, BUT>>>>if they should get a crease or a miss..its off to the races….and I believe in closing if they can run successfully this will not only set up play action ALA Jason Witten…but be prepared to see the screen be a staple of this offense. Good Defense and a Solid ground game is BP middle name. We might not put points on the board but this offense is alot more easy to manage game clock, field position and KNOCK ON WOOD be in a position to win the game with field goal or tie it and be put in a position to win games. I just hope that we can get some help in the secndary so we can get the HIT MAN Roy Williams playing more near the line of scrimmage. Anyway the 2te that I’ve been reading alot about is something we all should get used to…Oh yeah by the way if you should zoom glen towards TO with a 2te formation you would end up with a trip set and can pick apart lb’s and the te on the weakside lined up with a corner all day long. Let;s hope we can keep bledsoe upright and jones stays healthy for a season and ware takes the next step and we will be as the ROCK says” Can you smelllllLLLL,,,what the cowboys are cooking…Aloha and goodnight from the 808 state.

Got something to say?
