4th Round Thread

Here’s an appetizer from the Fox Sports net guys on the atmosphere in Radio City Music Hall yesterday. I didn’t involve the Cowboys directly, but it did involve a Cowboy. Enjoy:

…after an annoying three minutes of a convoluted E-A-G-L- (still going) -E-S chant, the Jets fans revolt. After all, the J-E-T-S, JETS! JETS! chant is their bread and butter… The Jets fans quickly unite, mobilize, and rock Radio City Muic Hall with an “Eagles Suck” chant. But they’re just getting started. This is THEIR city — we’re a long way from the Liberty Bell and cheesesteaks. After some back and forth, the Jets fans drop the proverbial hammer, delivering a room-rocking “Terrell Owens, Terrell Owens” chant. The Eagles faithful have nothing to say in response.

More news and fun as it appears.

10:10 — 4th round underway. Houston starts it with Wisconsin TE Owen Daniels and Philly follows with Georgia OG Max Jean-Gilles.

11:30 — Dallas selects LSU WR/KR Skyler Green. Special teams coach Bruce DeHaven is thrown a bone. But this is awfully early, IMO for a return man. Fourth round is the last leg of day one in my book. This is becoming the “show me” draft. Green better become the second coming of Dave Meggett, or this is a reach. This also puts the butterfingered Tyson Thompson on double-critical alert.

This should be a good day. If you look at the boards for OG, S, & NT, they have barely been touched. If those are in fact the ‘boys targets, they have been very patient and been rewarded in doing so.

you have to think maybe the boys are a little gun shy about selecting Oline on day 1.
    Johnson is still a ?
    Peterman is still a ?
Rogers….well, you all know what happenned there.

I think there is a lot of talent left. I’d love it if Jean-Gilles fell to us in the 4th, but I think he’ll be gone fast. I also think we have a VERY good chance to get Fifita or LeKevin in the 5th. There are a lot of DTs rated higher than these guys left on the board. What a steal if we get one in the 6th!

Here’s Scott Wright’s list of best available day two players…

    http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/features/bestdaytwo.html

Looks like we can get a very solid player in the 4th and more than likely, at least one of these guys may be around in the 5th or 6th.

Houston just picked a TE. I’d think those fans would be kind of ticked. They got Putzier in FA and they have that glass TE Joppru (spelling?) If I was a Houston fan, I’d have wanted Jean-Gilles to help out that sad OL. Could he be one of the players that the drug rumors involved or is it just a weight concern? I just can’t believe he has slipped this much.

Eaglets are having a very solid draft. They just beefed up their O-Line big time with Justice and Jean-Gilles. Damn!

    Donny on April 30th, 2006 10:24 am

There are quite a few players on the board that I’ve watched which can make good pros…possibly even PRO Bowlers. I think we may be doing more zone blocking next year then man schemes. I say this becuase I read a reportt sometime last year which was questioning our blocking sceme and saying that we must decide which scheme to use- zone or man. With he loss of the strong Allen and the more agile yet less strong Kosier, we may move more to the zone scheme. This might be wise since we do not have an overpoweringly strong line. If this is true, it may be the reason that we havent drafteed Gene Gilles. We may still but if this is true we probably would go after someone like Setterstrom instead. I think Demetrius Williams is a good WR. I heard one repor saying he may end up the best WR in this class. I dont knjow abou that but I have seen him play and he has incredible hands and makes acrobatic catches kinda like Bradon Llyod of the once 49ers and now the Redskins. He could provide good depth at WR. Jeremy Bloom and Skyler Green are options to me as a 4h WR becuase hey are both return specialists. I’d like us to pick up a FS and DT. Ko SImpson is highly rated-Im not sure why he fell. Pat Watkins and Darnell Bing are also good players. I like Watkins actually and I think he’ll only get better with time and coaching. I am surprised that several DT have not been taken yet especially Gabe Watson Jesse Mahelona and Babtunde Oshinowa. We may also be interested in Barry Cofield Marcus Green LeKevin Smith Montavious Stanely Rod Wright. Personally- I feel like we need a DT that can stuff the run as a NT–unless truly BP plans to use Spears in that role. I would like to move up and get Watson just on potential. BP can make him into a rotational force.

I live near OXnard in California. I’d like to buy Raf and Raul or anyone else tha comes out drinks or lunch.
I’d also like o report what I see. Cant wait til camp.

THE Eagles just stole Max Gene Gilles. Great Pickup at his stage. I absolutely HATE to say it but Philly is having an absolutely great draft.

    miamicowboys5,

That makes sense, since they picked up Brodrick Bunkley yesterday.

    Donny on April 30th, 2006 10:28 am

Last time I checked there are still a couple yet good DT free agens out there like Grady Jackson if we miss out geting a DT but I hope we nab one

  13. 13
    alanTdot on April 30th, 2006 10:28 am

Gilles is coming out of college at 350+.
A weight problem waiting to happen.

There must be a reason Brick was the only OT drafted in the first round, so I am not to worried about philly.

    vandy on April 30th, 2006 10:32 am

    Hey Blitz:

They have had a great draft, except for one thing: The only real glaring need they have addressed after 4 picks is Bunkley. They are still woefully inadequate in WR, RB, and OLB.

  16. 16
    miamicowboys5 on April 30th, 2006 10:32 am

bills picked ko simpson, man dallas is sure putting alot of faith in coleman and davis. watkins will probably not last until the cowboys pick at 125

  17. 17
    clam625 on April 30th, 2006 10:32 am

i concur. i hate to say it too, but philly’s draft right now is just plain sick. if you told me that we were going to get bunkley, justice, gocong, and giles for the cowboys i would probably piss my pants in joy. sadly it is not the case, however. my pants are dry…dry

    Donny on April 30th, 2006 10:57 am

Green Bay just took Will Blackmon who could have been moved to FS as he was a standout CB with size. One less for Cowboys. Where are you at now Vandy??

    Let Watkins be there….

  35. 35
    vandy on April 30th, 2006 11:01 am

I’m in Milwaukie, Oregon (just outside of Portland). Some of my best memories involve meeting the ‘Boys during Summer camp. I am not sure you can do this anymore, but they used to let you get real close to the guys: bring them drinks, have them over for dinner. It was alot of fun.

    alanTdot,

in not as sold on tyson thompson as some of the others. pure speed isnt enough

  41. 41
    Blitzkreig on April 30th, 2006 11:14 am

I agree, but he was an undrafted FA who was very raw. Since you can’t teach speed, I’d like to give him another year to learn and see where he is next year, but I can see your point.

  42. 42
    MikeA on April 30th, 2006 11:16 am

I guess FS isn’t in the cards? OL? NT? Guess they really are picking the overall best player left on the board. I just hope that the points correlate to the player on the field. Dallas really does NEED a FS and a NT. Am I wrong?

  43. 43

I think Hatcher is too tall to be a 3-4 DT. I still think we’ll be able to get one of the following, maybe in the sixth

    LeKevin Smith
    Fifita
    Montaveous Stanley

I’d be happy with any one of those guys and they’d be a huge value in that round. I wouldn’t be disappointed if we took them earlier just to make sure we got one.

  57. 57
    alanTdot on April 30th, 2006 11:39 am

    Wow.

    Sky Green.

Were our ST that bad last year?

KO returns were pretty good, but maybe our Punt returns never had a shifty quick guy like Green.

Oh well. I still hope we get some OL/NT in our future.

  58. 58
    Travlr on April 30th, 2006 11:41 am

Green is on 1350 AM in Dallas, he is a former HS QB who went to LSU listed as “athlete”, he worked also as running back on reverses and returned most of the punts and kickoffs.

  59. 59
Rafael Vela on April 30th, 2006 11:42 am

    alanTdot,

Coverage teams were good. Return teams, especially punts, were awful. Green was drafted to address this. Still, it’s about one round too high for me.

  60. 60
    Blitzkreig on April 30th, 2006 11:43 am

I think this is a great pick. The guy is one of the best KR/PRs in the draft and he’d be a great slot WR. He’s small, but he’s a playmaker.

  61. 61
    Blitzkreig on April 30th, 2006 11:47 am

    OK. 5th round hopes

    Pat Watkins
    Kevin Boothe
or one of the DTs I listed in comment 51

    What’s everyone else hoping for?

  62. 62
    Donny on April 30th, 2006 11:47 am

I think Skyler Green will help our punt returns and possibly kick returns BUT I thought we’d be better served in the secondary or NT. I guess this means that we do not like Watkins.

  63. 63
    Donny on April 30th, 2006 11:49 am

I am surprised to see that we havent taken a OLineman yet

  64. 64
    Grantp on April 30th, 2006 11:50 am

I’m not 100% against this pick. It’s an area of moderate need. If he pans out, it means we won’t need Newman to return punts next year. I held my breath everytime I saw him back there. By our 5th round selection, there probably won’t be any O-Linemen better than Petitti available, though. I wish we had grabbed a couple of big-time linemen either in FA or the draft, but it looks like BP wants to stand pat. I think it’s a huge mistake - like choosing Tucker over Vollers last year. I hope I’m wrong. But we’ll see.

  65. 65
    alanTdot on April 30th, 2006 11:52 am

I can’t remember which poster said it but he had a point about us being locked in at Oline.

There is a lot of cash in our Oline right now - like our secondary - and we have a lot of guys on the make or break line.

What we don’t have is a Back up NT.

  66. 66
    alanTdot on April 30th, 2006 11:55 am

Did Vollers play anywhere else last year?
