7th Round Thread
Posted: April 30, 2006 @ 4:10 pm
The Cowboys finished the day with an unwhelming OT duo, who make me wonder if Bill Parcells hit the buffet early.
Dallas first took Weber State OT Pat McQuistan, the twin of Paul McQuistan, the Raiders third round OT pick. Paul gets all the ink — there is NO information on Pat available. I wondered if maybe somebody in the draft room forgot to remove Paul’s card from their board yesterday.
Dallas ended the day by taking Texas Tech OT E.J. Whitley. Whitley gets high marks for his versatility — he played all OL spots at Tech — and his leadership. I’m troubled by one glaring fact: he has very short arms, according to one book, which should move him to guard. However, his weakness is run blocking, since Tech’s offense is so pass intensive.
As I said, an underwhelming duo at first glance.

Rafael; Whitley was the starting Center for Tech last year. In his 4 years at Tech he started in all 5 OL slots
draft is over for cowboys. im just sitting around to see if raiders take vick for the very last pick of the draft. they’re in need for a young qb.
Hey and maybe we’ll make a trade with Tenn for LenDale White too…..haha
McQuistan is 6-6 315lbs, and looks exactly like his brother.
Raf,
You have any early thoughts on rookie FAs? I’d like to see Dallas give Jami Hightower another look. What I have read about him is he is a mamouth OT, that can maul DEs when he gets his hands on them. A project, but maybe he can come along by playing in 4th quarter situations with leads.
There’s an interesting angle on the Raider’s taking Vick. Since they signed Aaron Brooks–Vick’s cousin, he can offer them a unique insider’s view on Marcus’ character. Just wonder if it’s all good between the cousins?
Wow Raf you usuallly take the Spags approach on moves that seem not so good, always pointing out the upside in the Boys’ defense. Kind of a low level of harshness reviewing our final picks there
I think we got three solid picks in
Capenter,Fasano and Green. If these three have imediate impact (and I think they will) it will be a decent draft, but far from great. Last year BP and Jones were doing back flips. This year players didn’t fall in to their lap’s.
Last year and “A” this year a “C”. Beats a “D” or “F”.
Whitley also maxed out at 365 in the bench. I never would have thought you could be a Div. I lineman, much less an NFL lineman, when you are that weak.
THERE is a report out here that calls Jason Hatcher the best pick of the 3 round. Well one of 3. Its on NFL.com
I think our 7th round picks suck. Maybe BP finally gave JJ his chance to draft or maybe our scouts suck with OL but we have been drafting very bad offensive lineman and I am geing kinda pissed about it. Setterstrom went after our picks and his credo is a lot better then our picks. There were also some non- o lineman pciked that could possibly become players. I feel like our guys have no reason to even be practicing with the Cowboys
I hope I am wrong but who the heck is in charge of scouting our offensive linemen?
I was happy with our 4,5,6 round picks. We got talented players in areas of some need. I say we pulled our grade up to a C+ or B- range. That is still troublesome because the Eagles had a monster draft and significantly improved their lines on both sides of the ball. We seem to have taken a step backward on O-Line and D-Line by comparison. I’m really happy we have a bookend for Ware and a prototype NT (although I doubt he’s as good as Glover who was alot better than Ferguson despite playing out of position). We improved at TE, and we got a safety who just might have the potential to be a real star. But I don’t understand BP’s stubborness in ignoring our most glaring need - offensive line.
A little info on Whitley. He was kinda the glue for the line thelast two years. He works extremly well in space and in one on one situations. He will give up a little ground to some bigger DTs, but he never really gets beaten and stays between the QB and the defender. He probably needs to add a little weight to play G or C. He’s a character guy that can bring some leadership to the unit, expecially if he’s still here when Rivera leaves.
Whitley is also a better run blocker than one would expect. He is not dominant in the running game, but he is at least servicable. When we ran, it was behind Whitley. You have to give him alot of credit for Taurean Henderson’s success on the ground.
He is a project player, but definitly has a lot of potential. He’s a smart player with alot of size. Texas Tech has had a very good track record the last few years with reserve linemen. Dylan Gandy, Toby Cecil, and Daniel Loper were all guys that made teams and impressed last year.
Raf, who said he has short arms? read this:
http://nfldraft.rivals.com/cviewplayer.asp?Player=3032&PT=7&PR=2&type=scoutingreport
Pros: Whitley is a tall, angular left tackle who has very long arms. His sound technique and huge size allow him to overcome only slightly better-than-average athleticism. He relies on smarts, sound positioning and technique to gain a fast advantage. He has developed into a good pass protector using those skills, despite only adequate quickness, speed and athletic ability. He shows the ability to easily slide along the line. He has good size with the long reach, flexibility, footwork and functional strength to start in the NFL. He has graded out much higher over his career as a pass protector than a run blocker after playing in an offense that seldom ran the ball.
Cons: As a run blocker, he needs to develop more explosiveness and drive off the ball. He has only adequate footwork for the outside. He lacks a powerful surge at the point of attack and relies more on finesse. As a drive blocker, he lacks the strong leg drive to grade out high consistently - it is an area that needs development. He must learn to sustain and finish his run blocks better and show a nasty disposition more often.
Numbers:: At the Combine he ran the 40-yard dash in 5.38 seconds with a 25†vertical jump and an 8’5†broad jump. He did 16 reps of the 225-pound bench press.
altercall,
Pro Football Weekly’s book says this,
“lacks upper both strength, having completed only 16 reps at 225 lbs. at the Combine. Has very short arms…”
GrantP,
I usually am looking for an upside, but these guys seem like much longer shots than normal, especially McQuistan. Looking like his brother only counts if he can play like him, and I have yet to find any data on this guy.
Only time will tell with any of these draftees. I don’t make any judgements for at least 1 or 2 yesrs. One thing to consider is that generally fans seem to be dissapointed with later round picks. But what can you expect after 32 teams have had 6 rounds to pick the better players. Also, anyone who thinks he can pick em better than Tuna and co. needs to reconsider.
Raf, do you wonder if the y had McQuistan listed on their board as “P. McQuistan” and thought that it was the same guy?
As for Whitley, there are 2 respected draft profiles saying oposite things, I’ll see what else I can find.
I will fill you all in after training camp in July, about the rookies. This will be my last chance to see them in Oxnard.
Alter, I was listening to Dallas radio being streamed from the Cowboys website, and they were joking about that. For a while there, they thought Pat was Paul who was drafted twice :0)
Raf, theres a little on McQuistan on the cowboy site undr draft tracker, but it doesn’t say too much.
Well, all in all I’m content. Yesterday I had my doubts, but We got Watkins for a better price and a TE who will/can replace polite and Campbell. A DE for a four man Rotation to challenge the NFC East’s big O-linemen, and a NT/DT who has a fettish for killing QB’s (you like that huh blitz?) The 7th rounders can be projects. Hey, not all studs come from day one and the others could be critical role players. Time will tell, but right now I say it’s a B- to B.
Philly came out with both fists swinging though didn’t they? I can only hope that Mcnabb plays his same ol game of being the ultimate overated QB since Ryan Leaf! LOL.
Raf,
FoxSport.com says, “Has the long arms needed with good placement to steer the pass rushers wide.”
What in the world, it only posted the very beginning of my post.
I was saying that Whitley’s scouting reports kinda remind me of another Red Raider OL who played multiple positions, Dylan Gandy. Both were knocked as not being able to run block and not being able to block on the second level. Dylan was drafted in the 4th by Indy and started 2 games last year.
Dyaln’s a bit stronger, but has just about filled out his frame, while Whitley has alot of room to put on weight, and probably need to lose some of that pudge.
I think Whitley could project as a OT or OG depending on how much weight he can put on. His best position is probably gaurd though, as he’s good pulling and reading and adjusting to blitzes. He might be a bit too tall to play center.
First time contributer, Long time reader.
I just had to throw my 2cents in on this one. I learned two years ago when JJ and BP traded out of the first round to not be too quick to judge their drafting abilities. These are two guys who have had extremely successful lives, more than anyone here including myself, due to their excellent decision making skills.
I will also go out on a limb and claim that BP and JJ have looked at everyone of these guys a helluva lot closer than anyone here. So unless you have a few million bucks and a vast array of scouting services, I would have to go with the judgement of BP and JJ.
Will they make bad decisions? Sure. But as JJ says, every decision involves risks. It is the same as the stock market. You have to look for Low risk and high yeild. But those deals are few and far between. But I will always trust the broker that has the most proven track record and the most resources. BP and JJ have proven to be an excellent tandem when it comes to the draft.
LATER
actually they have a rather poor track record drafting OL
I just didt see the value with these guys and there were still a few players on the board. These 2 were undrafted rookies unless we took them. If we wanted them we could have offered them 10,000 signing bonus as FA and they would have came considering no-one else would have offered them that. I say we pay 10,000 to Olline coaches in the colledge ranks. Michigan, Ohio State USC, Texas, OKlahoma, Florida State etc etc as the caoches will have an everyday feel for the players
DRAFT IS OVER AND MARCUS VICK IS NOW A FREE AGENT, HEH, HEH, HEH. WONDER WHO WILL TAKE A CHANCE ON HIM NOW??????
I don’t see what the problem is getting these last two linemen, for one thing who ever is saying those guys were going to be free agents you could pretty much argue everyone else in the 7th round was going to be too. either way we got what we needed in those late rounds.
I really like the Whitley pickup, he’s just as good as any other guy in the 7th round so why not take a chance. I got to see Whitley play every game last year and he was pretty much solid throughout the year although he was far from flawless. Now here’s something to note, even though there are mechanics to be worked on in his run game it was simply the fact that Tech didn’t run very much which perceives him as not being good at the run but when Tech did indeed run he provided a pretty big gap, now i’m not saying he was good at run blocking but the few times he attempted it he did for the most part get the job done.
Here are my UNPROFESSIONAL oppinions on the draft picks.
Round 1: OLB Bobby Carpenter - Could not have picked a better guy. In fact, outside of the top five guys, no one else could have helped more. Excellent compliment to Julius.
ROUND 2- TE Anthony Fasano - I was very confused at first. Almost like the Julius trade with Buffalo (at which I was very upset). However, JJ’s press conference cleared it up. My god look at our offense now. Terrifying to pass defenses. Especially LB’s.
ROUND 3- DE Jason Hatcher - I still don’t get it completely. I think JJ and BP know some inside info on this guy. Or maybe preparation to be in position to trade Ellis. Which, let’s face it, is not happy with his situation and would much rather play in a 4-3.
ROUND 4- WR Skyler Green - Obviously, picked for Return skills. Yes, a little high for a return man, but also a chance to be an excellent slot receiver. Remember to think future. Once Crayton is ready to fill a 1 or 2 role, Green may be that slot guy. It is not likely he can be successful as a 1 or 2 though, due to size. But a very big potential to improve our ST.
ROUND 5 - FS Pat Watkins - I know people were suprised to see him fall that far, but the truth is, I don’t think he is an upgrade over Coleman or Davis. Yes, I do believe that got him because of his position, but only because of what he brings ST wise, like Skyler Green. I think he has a great chance to develop into a better FS than Coleman or Davis, but not this year. And as much as I hate to say it, Beriault may be gone, unless they cut Coleman, which is a better option in my opinion.
ROUND 6- NT Montavious Stanley - Excellent backup for development to starter. And Judging by his statements, a dead on attitude for a NT. I truely believe in 2 years he and Little Pepper will be our rotating NTs.
ROUND 7- OT McQuistan & OT Whitley- I think that Whitley is pretty much another Tyson Walter type. He is probably a career back up that saves you space on a 45 man game day roster. BP loves those guys for that purpose. So maybe he is not a developing starter, but he will eventually allow you to have more LBs, WRs, RBs, etc. in a game. That is very valuable. As for McQuistan, great size. Probably a Gaurd prospect. And we do have time to develop him before Rivera retires. Give the guy a chance though, and trust the judgement of BP and JJ because they have more info than us.
LATER
Boys have signed their first undrafted FA. A QB from Yale: Jeff Mroz. 6-4 225 lbs.
dont be shocked if some more Olineman get signed, and a punter who has kicked off before.
I pray that we dont pick up Marcus Vick…and this is comming from a VT student….He is the dumbest individual to walk the earth, and is a worse trouble maker than TO could ever be. He’s only played one full season too. I love my school and our football team, but i dont want to see Vick on the Cowboys.
i doubt they’ll take another QB to camp. they still seem to like romo, and if henson is on his “last chance” with NFL Europe he seems to be making the most of it.
thats true…and ESPN was saying how much we love Romo and that he might even see some PT this year. So we’ll see
JJ and BP obviously made a wrong decision in drafting Jacob Rogers. But outside of that they have done a fair job. Lineman take time to develop, unlike running backs or corner backs. Gurode has been progressing as a C and G and could very well replace Rivera if and when Johnson develops. And this will be Johnson’s third season. Peterman still could develop. I am more of a believer in signing 4-5yr FA veterans when it comes to the line because of the development gap. That is why I believe the Kosier deal was great.
Also, Look at the day two picks JJ and BP have had:
Bradie James- 4th
Patrick Crayton- 7th
Jacques Reeves- 7th
Marion Barber- 4th
Chris Canty- 4th
Rob Pettiti- 6th
Not too shaby for the past three years.
LATER
The boys continue to get younger. its hard to argue with the 1st two picks, they will come in and start immediately.
Hatcher was a surprise to all of us, but it appears by many standards to be a quality pick (more from what alot of GMs say than what the draftnicks say). I think he will be a part of the rotation this year and will contribute on ST.
Green will play ST immediately and i dont see any reason why they wont let him compete for the 3rd WR spot. Not a big deal if he ends up 4th or 5th there this year.
Watkins doenst need to come in and start but will compete for the job and will play ST. he is the 4th safety unless beriault or one of the others just beats him out. if watkins develops into a real potential starter by next year, great.
stanley could turn into a steal. again, he doenst need to start but will likely be worked into the rotation. he is massive.
as to the two olineman, take them or leave them. most will probably leave them. my guess is they are a long shot at best to make the roster but could be stashed on the practice squad.
Again, look for some more names tomorrow for FAs.
JJ mentioned in his interview that they have signed a kicker (i wonder if he meant punter). the QB from Yale is signed too.
Personally, I think the McQuistan pick is a pretty safe pick.
Certainly siblings can be very different–even identical twins. However, if scouts feel his twin, Paul, has all the measureables to be a good NFL lineman, why wouldn’t the identical twin, Pat–with the exact same measureables, same upbringing, same coaching, same/similar intelligence, and similar experiences–be a good risk in the 7th?
If he fails and his identical twin brother succeeds, you could only chalk it up to personality/desire (injuries aside). His brother succeeding would be testament to everything else being there.
He was 2nd team all-conference. He has played LT and G. Has great size. Has good athleticism for the position. Well worth the pick, imo.
sam.iam,
i think everyone and their brother will speculate that they just mixed the two up, but its hard to believe thats what happened. BP has been known to find guys in the low rounds that develop into starting quality lineman though.
How can you come away from the draft and not be younger?
Sam.iam
What conference did he play in?
cash,
by drafting a large percentage of players who will be contributing in one way or another this year and could end up being long term starters for the next 3-5 years in stead of reaching for need. the comment was meant in the larger perspective of the whole offseason.
Cash,
Weber State is in the Big Sky Conference, NCAA-II.
Schools like Eastern Washington, Montana, Northern Arizona are in the same conf. Reasonably good rep for that level, mostly known for QBs and wide-open offenses.
By the way, Weber State is also one of the many coaching stops of our beloved Dave Campo and Mike Zimmer…uh, yeah. The Weber State pipeline.
Actually Weber St. is NCAA I-AA, not division II. My mistake.
Raf,
Do you have access to the FA signings, when they come in? This has been one of my biggest frustrations is getting info on these guys. I’m assuming the Boys are making contact and signing these guys right now. How soon can we have the list?
bluecheese,
go to cowboys.theinsiders.com
I’d like to remind everyone, that these project O-Linemen are not bad pickups in the 7th round. Now, picking them up in the 2nd and 3rd round is an issue (Rogers and Peterman respectively). Now the jury’s still out on Peterman, but we all know how Rogers turned out. If one of these guys can at least turn into a servicable backup, that’s a success. And if one of them becomes a solid starter, that’s a steal. If both of them amount to anything, well hot damn BP, you’re the man!
DE Bobby Payne from middle Tenn state. 6′4″ 286
who is the quarterback we picked up? im curious. i would love to have marcus vick as a project.
i was lookin at the ranch report and it sed we picked one up, but idk who because im not an insider.
jarhead:
You’re right. There’s no mistake between the brothers. Heard Pat’s interview and he said a Cowboys coach called him three times today to tell him that he might be drafted or signed in FA
QB is jeff mroz from yale.
6′4″ 225 59% passer 22 TDs and 14 Picks.
long shot obviously. i think that will finish them up on QBs.
The QB we picked up was none other than Jeff Mroz of Yale (I live pretty close to Yale, so I’ve seen a bit of him). He’s got the size, and his production wasn’t bad for having not a single lineman break the 290 lb mark (actually, I think one might’ve this year). He probably won’t make the team, but he might be a practice squad candidate. You saw how Fitzpatrick (another Ivy League QB) did for the Rams, so maybe that’s fresh on JJ’s mind.
On Pat Mcquistan he has nice size 6′6′ 315.
Pat benched 225 23 times ,ran a 5.1 40
Some to compare him with:
D’brick- 26 reps, 5.1 40
Max Gilles- 24 reps,5.47 40
The guy sounds like a good 7th round
pick.
David G,
BP already is the man….anyone who
could get another team to pay Torrin
Tucker more money after last year should get an automatic admission to the HOF.We are trying to figure out K.
Kosier…. imagine what they are saying in Tampa!
I really like S. Green anyone see him
play alot??
From CBSSPORTSLINE.COM:
Dallas Cowboys
Best pick: Fifth-round pick Pat Watkins has a chance to be a starter down the road at safety. He has the tools, even if he didn’t play to them last year at Florida State.
Worst pick: Anthony Fasano is a good player, but with Jason Witten and Dan Campbell on the roster, why is he needed?
Overall grade: B-. I liked the pick of Bobby Carpenter in the first round, but Fasano wasn’t a need.
Isn’t Campbell gone? Hmmm. Wonder what the grade would have been if the writer actually had a clue what he was talking about.
bluecheese,
welcome to the sports blog world. you’ll never go back.
From CBSSPORTSLINE.COM:
New England Patriots
Best pick: They needed running back help, so taking Laurence Maroney was a great move. He will be a star.
Worst pick: The Patriots have used high picks on tight ends the past four years, so why bother with David Thomas in the third round? How many do you need, even with losing Christian Fauria?
Overall grade: A. They know how to get good football players. Maroney and second-round pick Chad Jackson were really premium picks.
Notice a theme? Why are BP and his disciples stocking up tight ends? Idiots! Only 5 Superbowl championships between them, what do they know?
The more I read about Pat Watkins, the more I like. His short shuttle and 3-cone times are better than most of the Cornerbacks. He’s just under 6-5 with 34″ arms and a 41″ vertical. 78 + 41 + 34 - 12 (for the head)…that’s almost 12 feet of Free Safety!
Good Deep Safety coverage skills. Led FSU in interceptions his Senior and Junior years.
Sounds like his big weakness is maybe not the most physical guy. It would be killer to pick up a starter in the 5th. At the very least, he’ll be a great Nickle Safety and Gunner this year. Great pick.
apparently, either payne or the boys have backed out of the signing. so forget about that FA.
Test
Alright, sorry about the last; forgot you had to login first…
Have no idea how this Draft will turn out; we’re all “experts”; but then again, I thought the Cowboys 2000 Draft was a great one too; and I thought the “Dirty Dozen” in ‘75 was terrible, so what do I know…
So, I normally buy about a dozen of those draft books; study, make predictions, figure out what’s going on; what the Cowboys need, etc., etc., only to see it go out the window, as soon as the Draft actually takes place.
This year, I bought only 2: ESPN and Sporting News; the internet, this blog and others, time, age, money, all conspired to make it less attractive to get “in to it…” so much this year.
But, just for “fun”, I’ll put the two “expert” books I have, their opinions here for all to see, on the all the Cowboy’s picks this weekend, so we may look back and laugh, or cry, later on!
PS: this is NOT my analysis, nor endorsement, this is from the ESPN and TSN Draft Guides…
Bobby Carpenter
ESPN ranked him the #5 OLB/1st Round Pick
TSN ranked him #5, and a 2nd Round pick..
Anthony Fasano
ESPN ranked him #5 and a 2nd Rounder
TSN ranked him #4 and a 2nd Rounder
Jason Hatcher
ESPN ranked him #30 among DE, and had him Undrafted/FA
TSN left him out completely…
Wow, that was a 3rd Rounder for us…
Skyler Green
ESPN had him #14 in the 4th
TSN had him #10 in the 4th
Pat Watkins
ESPN #6 in the 3rd…
TSN #5 in the 3rd…
Montavious Stanley
ESPN ranked him #14 in the 4th..
TSN had him ranked 26th and undrafted/FA
Dale in Atlanta
ESPN ranked him #32 second in the 7th
Pat McQuistan
His brother Paul, taken in the 3rd round by the Raiders, was:
ESPN had PAUL at #19 for OT’s, and a 6th Rounder..
TSN had PAUL at #19 and a 7th Rounder..
I STRONGLY suspect, that the Draft “experts” actually dropped the ball on this, and didn’t realize, there were TWO of them…
Rumor… 2x now:
I heard Norm Hitzges say it this afternoon and I read Lenny P on ESPN tonight both saying Dallas tried to shop Julius Jones this weekend. If true, what does that mean for the RB position? If they’ve lost faith in him, are they going to make Barber the feature back? Can he handle that? That seems like pretty big news to me.
E. J. Whitely
ESPN #13 in the 4th
TSN #12 in the 5th..
Randy V.: I’m not talking the ESPN website, but the ESPN Draft Guide book; where they have him #30 and a FA
TSN ranked Dale in Atlanta “Mister Irrelevant”.
Anyway, I know 2 Draft Books is too small a sample, to draw from; but IF you just relied on those two, you can say, generally, that
Carpenter, Green, Fasano were picked “just about right”
MAY have gotten some “value” on Watkins and Whitely
Hatcher; wow, this will either be a Bobby Haynes/Cornell type briliant pick; or a Shante Carver/Quincey Carter type pick! You choose…
Stanley; no idea; a “schizoid” pick; and McQusitan; INC, because I think no one knows he existed….or something like that…
So, my “gut”, which is always wrong, says too bad; can’t have a year like last year, all the time…; this is a C++ Draft, maybe…
But again, hello, I don’t know; I sat beside Todd Blackledge at PSU in African History class, and I predicted GREATNESS for him in the NFL, because he was such a good, nice guy, and a great QB for PSU that year!
I also thought Joe Montana got “lucky” with the “Catch”, and wouldn’t amount to diddly squat!
And, I was RIGHT about Quincey Carter; even got into a nasty email exchange with the “Spags” about him, because he always parrots the Valley Ranch Official Line like the shill that he is! My “gut” on that was easy; any QB who’s just come out of College, who has to be TAUGHT how to take a Snap from Center!!!!!!, doesn’t have that bright of a future!
Ultimately, we’ll have to wait 3 - 4 years, and then look back, and say I told you so!
PS: I just have this funny feeling, that the Packers, Eagles, and Bills, ended up with more of the Players we REALLY wanted this draft(Ko Simpson, Calledge, etc.); than we actually did; Despite JJ spinning that the Cowboys got Exactly who they wanted!
Thanks Randy V, you have a good night as well!
i bet lendale white was suppose to replace jj.
Dale-
Thanks for the info. I also feel this could come out good provided we don’t give up on the players too early as most seem to be developing players.
Randy-
Name calling is not the classy actions we at this site stoop to. Please try to maintain an air of respect for the Cowboys fans who contribute to this media. Anyone here is free to offer their opinions and add any news or commentary without being intimidated. We can disagree, agree, change our minds etc. as we see fit, but the childish name-calling issue was settled a few months back. Thanks.
All-
I know a lot of us are dissapointed that we didn’t get “our” picks, but I think the overall concensus so far is that we came out slightly above average. Not too bad for a team about to make a championship run.
Go Cowboys!!!
The problem with the magazines is that they are months old opinions about players. The Sporting News draft preview was published before they got combine data!
So late risers and fallers don’t get picked up, and some of the stats are quite inaccurate.
I don’t buy the rumor garbage that these Mediots spew! They still try to convince me every year that Mel Kyper is a “draft expert” and I haven’t seen anything in the last several years that impressed me.
Remember these are the people who made Brian Bosworth AKA “the BOZ” what he was. He never had talent, but his high profile antics caught their eye and they touted him as the “next Dick Butkus” so I ignore the rhetoric until I get an insider from here or a confirmation on the official website.
wow i was just watching ESPN news and Mel Kiper Jr. was critsizing our draft. He went on to say that we didnt address our safety issue at all…what an idiot. I’m pretty sure my girlfriend knows more about football players and the draft then he does.
I think Kiper just means we didn’t pick up a guy who would be a sure starter, ie Jason Allen. We didn’t, but I’m not sure we ever intended to anyway. Parcells seems to be okay with what we have there.
I guess Mel doesn’t think that Pat Watkins is a FS. Maybe he thought he was a kicker.
It’s not like Coleman and Davis haven’t started at FS before. Besides, Watkins also has the size to play some OLB. Might be one of those versatile type players that BP is looking for.
He may also have been brought in to replace Davis on ST, since he was a gunner in college. This will free up Davis to concentrate on FS full time.
I think we have to remember that the PAID MEDIA is there to basically yap their jaws and always have something to say. As long as they remain somewhat controversial, they are in the lights.
Of course, they are not there to talk about just one team. Everyone here can probably assess the Cowboys draft better than Mel Kiper, but then again, he has to assess all 32 teams. Even with 24 hours a day, who could keep all of that in their heads. There are over 1,700 players on NFL rosters right now. Think anyone can tell you about all of them?
LATER
I for one am glad I can finally say something positive. I really see Watkins as the sleeper of our draft. I think this is the type of unique athlete who could be a monster in the NFL. Worst Case - Great Special Teamer and average starting centerfield corner. Best Case - Pro Bowler who redefines the position and eliminates the fade route completely. I’m happy about him. My only 2nd day complaint was our 7th. I predict neither of these guys make the team. If we were going to throw those picks away, we should have gone for potential star players (like a CB that runs a 4.3, but some negative issues or a guy who was injured this year).
As for Kiper, I remember him telling all of Mike Williams’ critics to remember their comments at his HoF induction. LOL.
Killdaskins-
You have good points, but Kyper does this year after year and comes up with crap!! If he was an ordinary sports reporter who covered the whole sport then I’d give him an excuse, but he is THE self proclaimed “draft expert” and that my friends, makes him an Idiot!!
Is now a good time to point out that I’ve been singing Pat Watkins’ praises for over two months now? LOL I loved this guy and was pretty upset we didn’t pick him up in the third. Shows what I know. Better value in the fifth.
Grant-
We needed OL and why not take those 7th rd (freebies) picks and gamble on OL and spaghetti draft? Y’know throw em against the wall and see which one sticks. Odds are one of them will contribute one way or another, even if he makes the practice squad better for a few years ie Rudy, and then make the squad and realy contribute. I say give the guys a chance. Not all studs come in day one.
Now, I never said Mel Kiper WASN’T and idiot. LOL.
Sorry, I meant “an idiot”. I guess when you are basically calling someone an idiot, you should at least not look like one yourself. LOL.
I am starting to plan my trip down to Oxnard. Any suggestions on Hotels?
Owens, Witten, Fasano, Glenn, Crayton, and Barber all in the pattern. WOW!!!!
The Cowboys have bestowed jersey number 54 to Bobby Carpenter. Maybe it fortells of greatness to the level of Howley and White. I hope so.
I think I’ll give my reaction to each of our draft picks … mainly because no one can stop me.
Bobby Carpenter — OK, if this is really the guy you want. I would have preferred … Oh, never mind! He IS a very good player who should work well in our system. Could start from day 1.
Anthony Fasano — I have liked Fasano for awhile now, but, my first reaction was ‘HUH!’, since, you know, we have this Witten guy. After Jerry Jones explained how we were going to a base 2-TE set, it makes perfect sense. After all, nobody complains if you have 2 WRs, or 2 OGs, or 2 OTs, etc, etc. Fasano could be a fixture for a decade.
Jason Hatcher — Terrific prospect as a DE in the 3-4 defense. My only complaint is that we already have Spears, Canty, Ellis, and Ratliff. Still, even though he was off the radar of most fans, and even most of the draft gufus, people who count have him rated highly.
Skyler Green — Excellent return skills and some potential as a receiver. Probably taken too high, unless, as Jeff Ireland suggests, he is another Dante Hall, or can really contribute as a receiver. Will take over Crayton’s duties as punt returner. Thompson may hang on to his kickoff-return job, though.
Pat Watkins — This is the guy I was afraid we would not be able to draft in the 3rd round. Needless to say I am thrilled that we were able to get him in the 5th. Will AT LEAST be our nickel safety before the year is out. [I don't think Willie Pile will make the final cut.] Also, another special-teams beast.
Montavious Stanley — This guy may turn out to be the best player we drafted all weekend. I’m serious! Needs some technique work, and has to get himself in better shape. But, he still might put Ferguson on the bench before the year is out. I believe we are looking at our future at nose tackle.
Pat McQuistan — I seriously hope the Cowboys realize that this is the twin brother of the good guy. Almost no information to go on. One thing that kept his rating down was that he only played college football for two years. A definite long-term project, and a practice squad candidate.
E.J. Whitley — Now this guy has some upside. I don’t think he is starter material. But, he could become a quality reserve, backing up multiple positions for 4-5 years, which is about all you can ask for a 7th-round pick. I don’t think he’ll be able to contribute much this year, though, since he needs technique work on the running game, and needs at least a full year of professional weight training before he will be ready to be productive at this level. Probably another practice squad candidate, unless we suffer a lot of o-line injuries in camp.
I meant ‘draft gurus’, not ‘draft gufus’, in the previous post, although the latter seems to work, too.
Just an aside: Pat Kirwin on Sirius Nfl Draft coverage said that the defensice backs at the Senior Bowl (or was it the East-West?) told him that Sky Green was the most difficult receiver to cover of all the guys there. Too quick off the line and out of the slot.
*defensive
Not draft related: So are any of us concerned about BP’s silence? Is this really what the mediots are saying is a hissy fit over the TO signing?
Anyone else hear the rumor that we were trying to trade J. Jones to the Jets for the 29th pick? The deal fell through when the desired player (RB) came off the board. I assume they were interested in Deangelo Williams. Any truth to this?
No on the JJ thing. My guy tells me that JJ is a Parcells guy all the way and BP is still in love with the kid. He also told me that he doesn’t consider him injury prone, but that his injurys were “standard” and he still hangs with the best on half seasons. No way was there a trade deal, but he said it could have been smoke to mislead on the real target.
i think that BP doesnt fell like answering the barrage of questions about TO yet, not necessarily that he is pissed about the signing. we’ll hear from him soon enough.
Sort of draft related: Has there been much discussion on here about possibly moving Spears inside? It would explain our 3rd round pick
Hello All,
Followed the draft all weekend & feel they did a good job all the way around. For those of you who think the Cowboys got confused between Pat & Paul, Please.
I will give you my final opinion on this draft in about 2 years.
Did anyone hear the Cowboys signed Sam Hurd, receiver out of NIU to a 3 year deal last night! If anyone has any info on this guy please post.
here’s what ive heard.
Miles Austin, WR, Monmouth… 6-2, 216 pounds, sub-4.5 second 40… caught 150 passes in college, averaged just barely under 19 yards per catch…
John Saldi, OLB, Texas Tech… 6-4, 240 pounds, 4.65 second 40… the son of former Cowboys’ TE Jay Saldi…
Darrell Brooks, S, Arizona… 6-1, 210 pounds, 4.6 second 40…
Sam Hurd, WR, Northern Illinois… 6-2, 195 pounds, 4.55 second 40… reportedly has great hands, had a breakout season last year– 65 catches for 1074 yards, 13 TDs…
Jeff Mroz, QB, Yale… 6-5, 230 pounds, 4.95 second 40…
Just wanted to weigh in on our buddy Mel. He’s feeling superior because he has been trying to spoonfeed us Jason Allen for a couple months now. He’s a nice player, but two things:
1) The Dolphins took him two picks before us.
2) You can’t have every member of the secondary making more money than the quarterback Kiper you dumbass!!!!!
…excuse me fellas, but I had to vent. With these picks he doesn’t consider salary cap at all.
illcowboy,
kiper has been pushing FS for months. he made some comments about it over the weekend alot too. i dont think the boys ever seriously considered taking a S in round 1.
Jarhead:
Thanks for the info. I guess we`ll hear more about these FA`s in the next few days.
Also I heard they signed a Bobby Payne. DE out of MTSU. Looks like they did a lot of signings last night !
word is that payne backed out soon after he signed. dont know the story on that one, he was from the same school at pepper johnson.
None of these rookie free agent ’signings’ are final until they show up and actually sign their contracts, which probably won’t happen until Thursday. Until then, all a team has is a ‘commitment’, which is not worth the paper it is not signed on.
Kiper gets fixed on certain guys at certain slots. Once a few pieces slip, the whole puzzle falls apart.
Check out the highlight video on Skyler Green.

This video calms me down about the pick more (yes, I realize it is a highlight film). He can catch the ball and does have great short area quickness. I just hope that Crayton comes back to his pre-injury form so we can have two servicable WRs for years to come, even if they are #2 or 3 receivers.
A little info on McQuistan
As stated before in a previous post, it was no mix up that Pat was picked in the 7th and not Paul.
Pat signed a letter of intent to play for Weber State in high school, however overlooked acidemic elegibility requirments prevented him from following through. He then attended a community collage in Seattle where he played baseball. After Pat got the acidemic requirements out of the way he transfered to Weber State where he rejoined his brother Paul for the 04 and 05 season. Paul played with Weber State from 01 to 05 gaining much valued field experience over Pat, but Pat wasted no time making great strids to catch up and earned a starting spot on the o-line as a guard beside Paul. Both made drastic improvements their senior year with the new coaching staff led by Ron McBride. I can personaly tell you it was entertaining to watch both of them not only improve in performance from game to game durning their 05 season, but to watch them virtuialy do as they pleased with thier opponets.
I’m aware there is a differance in the level of competition between “A” and “AA” and especially “A” and NFL, but I am confident, with the righ coaching, it will only take a year ,tops, for Dallas to realise they not only made a good 7th round pick, but got a steal.
