Joe Brodsky - R.I.P.
Posted: May 28, 2006 @ 10:56 am
Former Cowboys RB coach Joe Brodsky passed away yesterday at the age of 71. Brodsky was part of the tight-knit group of coaches that followed Jimmy Johnson from the University of Miami to Dallas in 1989. That unit, which included Dave Wannstedt, Tony Wise, Butch Davis, Dave Campo and Hubbard Alexander overcame initial ridicule to build a championship squad.
Brodsky was responsible for developing Dallas’ duo of Emmitt Smith and Daryl Johnston. His passing comes only months after former Cowboys’ DC Ernie Stautner’s.
Tom Landry must be rebuilding in the great beyond.

Here’s a video of all of Julius’ sweet runs in that 194 yd performance against Carolina last season. If that OL was able to dominate the Panthers on the road like that, this year’s line should be ok. Did Gurode start that game?
As a matter of fact, Gurode did start that game. Rivera hurt his neck the week before in the Redskins game.
RIP Mr. Brodsky. You’ve done well!
What was realy amazing was that all but about three of those plays went to the left. I counted two up the middle and one to the right. I wonder if that was just a weakness in the Panthers’ Defense or does JJ not trust our right side?
Maybe he just trusted Larry Allen more.
The loquacious Peter King has declared a Dallas/New England Super Bowl this year.
I can hear the Redskin fans typing in protest to Sports Illustrated already.
What a great game for JJ! I was at that game and it was my first Cowboys game! What a wonderful day and christmas present from my wife! And beleive me, i made every one at work suffer and still do considering i have a picture of the score board plastered on my office wall for all to see!

If you look a couple of threads back when one of the bloggers offered a prize for whoever could pick the Super Bowl, I also picked Dallas - NE in Miami.
Nice to be picked. Hope that’s not the curse of death — especially given that he picked Minnesota last year!! Surely he can’t get it that wrong 2 years in a row. Just as long as the Cowboys stay away from boats….
I think this quote is on the money: “I like Dallas because it has answered every question I have for them but two: Is the offensive line good enough and will the secondary have any more meltdowns”
Those 2 questions hold the answer to our season.
This is a trend - first I saw the Vegas line had the Cowboys with best odds for the SB. Now Peter King. It will be interesting to see what the annual previews do. I’ve been irritated in the recent past at the lack of respect in the national media for team, but now that they’re getting some, I’m not so sure I like it after all…
Tarheel_Paul,
That was an awesome game. I was there too and it was also my first game. A friend of mine gave me 4 tickets in the players sections. We ended up on the side of the left endzone (Cowboys sideline). I went with one other Cowboys fan and two Panther fans and we hounded them mercilessly after it was all said and done. What a game! I’m hoping to make it to the rematch this year.
Blitzdrieg,
I was lucky enough to get a box seat. We were located directly behind the endzone that JJ ran the long touchdown. If you stayed after the game, i was the idiot hanging out the box chanting “HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS!” I also joined in on the party that all of the Dallas fans were having outside the stadium! That was awesome! And we wonder why dallas fans are hated around here
Box seats! How cool is that. Sounds like we were in opposite ends. I brought binoculars and kept them on Ware most of the game. I was able to watch him destroy Delhomme very clearly.
I’ve heard the game is already sold out, is that true? If it is, I hope my friend can come through with tickets again!
Just some thoughts, I know we are suppossed to be going for broke this season. how bout getting a veteran backup qb like kerry collins.
he has thrown for well over 20,000 yards in this league I believe. as compared to romo who has thrown zero.
if bledsoe gets hurt you know bill is going to play romo, and go extremely conservative. run get good feild position and play good defense.
We need kerry collins, also I hear tackle brad hopkins is available just some insurance if flozell isn’t 100%.
I was for getting Kerry Collins a couple of years ago. But i dont think he’s intrested in being a back up. He wants to go somewhere he can atleast compete for the starting job. But he would be a fantastic backup. My worst fear is for Bledsoe to get hurt but im ready to see what romo has. Bill and Jerry know something we dont about this guy. And if you can get Brad Hopkins for the veteran minimum then that would also be a great move.
Jerry & Bill have stated that they are basically done with Free Agency.
Speculation of any guys out there being brought in is inane.
Yes, there’s still cap space left, but the roster spots are way too tight to bring in veteran insurance.
The options are long-term contracts for Roy, Witten, et al vs. obtaining aging veterans that push promising young talent from the team.
Easy choice.
I hear what you are saying fighter15, the long term deals are a different matter all together. If we get in camp and then flo says he isn’t 100% or better yet 2 or 3 games into the season when the announcers are saying flo looks slow. the he comes out and says he’s not a 100% because he wanted to be out on the filed that isn’t helping us.
Never say never to free agency, we no nothing about Kozier, and also we don’t know if Rivera will be healthy. A bad back and offensive lineman means bad news. Hopkins would be a great 1 year stop gap. Not petersen, columbo or whomever trying to protect deadsloe. just like 2 years ago we were bringing in wr’s of the street. ward, morgan, after glenn went down. rb’s we had george, then we had anthony thomas, i know they weren’t much, but they were better than bickerstaff, and lee, cason, and the other rejects we had in the backfield. You really feel confident with the division we are in and the schedule throwing romo out there. he will get killed by all those hungry defenses looking in his scared eyes. missing passes to To ,and then TO getting pissed off and starting trouble. defenses will stack the run because we won’t be able to pass and we are done
I believe that the deals will not be consumated until mid-season, for the very purpose you stated…injuries.
Training camp and early season injuries will be addressed when they occur. After that, it’s depending on your young guys.
Who would have ever thought Crayton was going to be anything, until he got that chance in ‘04? Same for Jacques Reeves and Nate Jones last year. That’s why you have those guys…to learn and fill in when necessary.
I’d rather have Pettiti, Colombo and Peterson step in (even if they fail) than have Hopkins unretire and push either Pettiti or Colombo off the roster.
And I’d MUCH rather have Romo or Henson step in than have Collins take either’s place.
Bottom line, I’m willing to sacrifice immediate success for a chance to find out what we have for the future.
They said the same thing last year and then added Peerless Price right before the season started. What im saying is, if they get to camp and dont like what they see at a certain position, then they would bring in a veteran just like they did last year. The Peerless Price experiment was far from working but atleast they had an option when Patrick Crayton went down. And we saw where promising young talent got us when flo went down last year. I agree with your thinking about young talent but you can still bring in a vet to play it safe. And after last year, that wouldnt be a bad idea.
miamicowboys5:
What makes you think that the team is going for broke?
Did they signed Chris Hope? No.
Did they signed LeCharles Bentley? No.
Did they signed Randle El? No.
Jon Runyan? No.
What did they signed, then? One high priced and troubled WR, one high to mid priced G, one mid priced LB, one mid to low TE, one mid to low T, one low LB and one low FS.
So, no, they aren’t going for broke.
TARHEEL_PAUL:
I can understand why did Parcells signed Price last year, after the previous seasons, he didn’t knew that Glenn could stay healthy and other than him, he had a couple of one year veterans in Crayton and Copper…. There were a lot of uncertains.
Fighter 15
Thats my point, there are alot of uncertains this year with the oline. Like glennk, nobody knows how Flo’s knee is going to hold up, and after him, its slim pickens. Like I said, i agree with your saying about young talent, but a veteran insurance policy never hurts.
Blitzkrieg,
Let me know if you have a hard time getting tickets. My wife works at the Bank of America tower in Uptown, and she can pretty much get tickets to anything at the stadium anytime she wants. I will be on here when that time rolls around im sure. Just let me know. Always willing to help a fellow cowboy brother in time of need!
Chandus slow down man. You don’t need to buy 15 high priced free agents like the skins to win, look at New england and pittsburgh. We have enough.
by the way randle el is a third receiver, maybe second at best. I will take to over randle el anyday. like Michael Irvin said we had 2 number 2 receivers, now we have a legitimate 1 and 2.
Signed terrell owens yes
got a kicker vanderjadt yes
lineman kozier, fabini, and re-signed gurode
linebackers, ayodele, carpenter.
defense will be better spears, ware, ratliff, canty. we may have found a steal in hatcher, and stanley
We were a few field goals away from being a playoff team. and a better pass rush would have beaten the skins in there frist meeting. brunell wouldn’t have been able to throw the passes to moss then from his back.
Nfc isn’t all that tough.
Giants we could have beaten them twice
seahawks we really blew that game. field goal gets us win
we blew broncos game missed field goal again.
Eagles are done, redskins well nuff said.
I am only worried about panthers, and bucs, we beat them we can get homefield in Nfc.
We have bledsoe, witten, glenn, TO, crayton, fasano, and julius, barber whichever gets the job done.
Our defense will be better. there is no team in the nfc that is totally heads and shoulders above anyone else.
Tarheel_Paul,
You rock. I’ll definitely keep that in mind and do appreciate it a lot!
Thanks!
It’s not that the Cowboys are not ‘going for broke’, or that they have proven players and backups at every position. It’s certainly not that they are short of cash. It’s just that at some point you have to stop and take stock of what you have. That is why they are not likely to add anyone of any significance until after training camp and at least a couple of pre-season games.
It is also worthwhile to point out, that there is not much out there that could be definitely considered to be a quantum improvement. Given recent history, that situation is not likely to change with any June 1 cuts.
The subject of backup quarterback has been brought up. I feel that the Cowboys would like to give Romo and Henson the best possible opportunity to step forward and grasp the backup job. That opportunity would be seriously lessened if someone like Collins were brought in. Collins is not the future. Romo or Henson might be. The coaching staff will use this summer to get a better fix on the situation. It’s not as though we are talking about a starter here. If neither one of the young QBs steps up, there will still be time enough to bring in a veteran to back up Bledsoe, tossing one of those young guys aside in the process. It would be far better, though, to give them a decent chance to prove themselves, first.
The same principle holds for most other positions on the team. Backups can be found at any time. The final cuts will be full of them.
Hey guys off topic, haven’t really visited the website in a long time, but just wanted to inform you guys about the Dallas players that are visiting South Texas. Since the last time I wrote here, I have met Marcus Spears, Terry Glen, and Demarcus Ware just to name a few. But the biggest of them all Roy Williams will be making his presence on June 17. Well, if you want more info I provided a website where there is some info on Roy and also Dat Nguyen visit on June 2. Meeting Roy Williams Also look at the gallery’s and go to Demarcus Ware and click on the right arrow about 34 times and you will see me, with my wife and my son. My son has a pacifier with a cell phone in one hand. Ware is carrying him in his lap. It is a great opportunity to really meet you favorite cowboys players one on one. I was really excited to meet Ware, and now with Roy I cant Wait. Just wanted to share this message with loyal Cowboys Fan. Comment back for any info.
This is what you deal with as a ‘boys fan in DC
A tool that I work with sen me this with a title of “Finally a smart Cowboys fan” I do not know where it is from.
EVEN THIS COWBOYS FAN LAUGHS AT MY PICK. From Elizabeth Pugliese, of Washington, D.C.: “I have been a Dallas fan practically all my life. But Dallas in the Super Bowl this year? No way. It will be another disappointing year. They forgot to address their most glaring need: an actual quarterback. Drew Bledsoe cannot get it done in the clutch — or any other time. It is not just his lack of mobility (moving in one game does not make him a mobile quarterback); he does not make good throwing decisions, he can’t throw accurately enough to ensure that the ball gets to the guy on the route, etc. Then there is T.O. It is all the same hype from when he went to Philly. When he is not getting the ball, regardless of what Bill Parcells has said, he is going to throw temper tantrums, then short-arm passes to prove how important he is. No way. I’m not even holding my breath for the playoffs this year.”
Hey guys sorry for the mistake but “Meeting Roy Williams” was suppose to be a website, but here it is cowboyconnection.biz
swirvin:
so your saying Bledsoe does not make good throwing decisions and can’t throw accurately enough right? Yeah i’m sure you were saying that before Flozell Adams got hurt and Bledsoe had a quarterback rating of over 100%. Now your right about him not coming in the clutch but you forgot to say he didn’t come in the clutch “every game” because if you watched a couple of games last year you would have noticed he rallied the boys back against the Chargers, Eagles, and Kansas city. Now your post is certainly right if you believe the o-line at the end of the season was one of the best in the league and Bledsoe had plenty of time, sure i’ll give you 100% if you can prove that.
Joker-I took that as swirvin saying that the person that said that stuff was an idiot. Maybe I misread his post but I didn’t attribute those thoughts to swirvin.
whoa my bad. lol

While some mediots give the cowboys their due, others like Pete Prisco still fail to do so. In his Top 50 Players Prisco lists just one Cowboy (Owens #15). Meanwhile, he has the audacity to rate Ray Lewis at 10, Sean Taylor 26 (what has he ever done besides spit in that guy’s face and assault people?) and Brett Favre with his 20-29 TD to INT ratio at 44. Whatever
Yeah, joker, you misread, the redskin fan that send that comment took it from TMQB on SI, he didn’t added King’s response: which was something along the line of how good’s to have such loyal fans…
Well, I like this team so far. If we can come out of preseason w/o serious injuries I like our chances to win the NFCE. I really cannot wait to see this team, O,D, and ST, on the field. I’m trying to get to Oxnard for TC.
Who cares about Pete Prisco and his top 50 lists? It means exactly nothing. It’s worth remembering there are 31 other teams in the league, and the Cowboys finished with the same record and (nearly) the same points scored and allowed as the Dolphins. The entire roster isn’t headed to Canton.
And, when you get an opportunity, watch Sean Taylor play. He reminds me of a blend of Ed Reed’s innate ability to make great, disruptive plays and to cover, and Roy Williams’ ability to lay monster licks. He’s the prototype Safety. He just needs experience to bring it all together, let’s hope that never happens.
I was going to post on the latest thread, but I abhor fantasy football.
Nothing against those who do, it is a really great way to follow the league in depth, but I’m a fan. Gimme 24/7 Cowboys.
On that, Prisco’s picks were pretty good. A lot of players in the 30’s and 40’s are getting props late in their careers.
However, there is no excuse for Roy Williams not being put in there.
Maybe Flo. Other than that, you really couldn’t fit another Cowboy on that list.
To change the subject, hoping Raf throws another thread and some solid gold analysis, I was just “trolling the universe”, re-reading some old threads.
In the complete void of information that is to come after the next week or two, I highly recommend it.
After reliving the Costa Rican whorehouse Cowboys watching, twilight zone experience that Oiler Troll had…I’m crying from laughing so hard.
If the D is as good as I think it could be, at least 3 make Prisco’s picks next year.
R.I.P Coach Brodsky.
I don’t remember reading this before so I thought I would post it.
E.J. Whitley’s season ended. One of the Cowboys’ two seventh-round picks, had surgery Tuesday on a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee which he injured during a rookie minicamp. — article in Dallas Morning News
I’m sure this isn’t completely new since most are up on the news before it happens it seems, but…
K Thornton cut and Summers signed.
This Summers guy seems intruiging (sp?) for some reason. I’m not down on JJ or MBIII at all. But camp hasn’t even started and this guy keeps creeping into the news. I didn’t get to see any of his running clips in college and don’t know anything about him except that he was ‘cut’ due to mary jane infractions. Seems he was on his was to stardom prior to that. I don’t know how much room there is for carries but just something about him, seems destined. Anyone know something I don’t?
Ask Joe Thiesman what he thinks about Mary Jane-related behavior. I wonder what life is like up on the Joe Theisman pedestal. To be a scumbag and haughty all at once is a rare gift.
Check out this URL. http://www.demetrissummers.com/
I can’t make heads or tails of it.
1. His name is spelled incorrectly in the freaking URL
2. I don’t know if it’s a joke - there’s a PSII cover with him on it
3. Why does a RB who split time in the backfield before he was kicked off the team for drugs, and who wasn’t drafted into the NFL have his own newsletter?
4. Why is his home address and phone number in the header?
5. Who is Scott Keepfer, who is he a staff writer for, and why does a church run this web site?
