Word is that he will only be out 2 weeks. That is still good news, compared to last year, when he was out most of training camp.

Thanks Raf, I knew my $10.00 would be well spent. LOL.
    BTW any word from Sterling?
Also my friend and Jones confidant (Bullet Bob Hayes’ nephew) says BP LOVES MBIII, but also acknowledges that JJ is the Starter Period!!!

for Fighter a few blogs back-
Eric-r was just reporting for us, get off him. He was talking blockers and someone like you who hates Bledsoe so much should appreciate that. The Season is underway, let’s get rid of the speculation and garbage. Now we have something real to talk about.

No one said, but where did Coleman line up? safety or Corner?

I didnt make practice as I was supposed to. Damn it. BUT I have one important question.

Why is Marc Columbo running second team behind Pat McQuistan?

The blog report suggests Culumbo was getting most of the snaps in scrimmage BUT DC.com says McQuistan was running first team. Does this say anything about where Columbo is?

Bad news on Spears but its a chance to work some younger guys into the mix. The one place where injuries aren’t as crushing is the front 7, lots of depth.

Parcells obviously really likes Polite. Is giving him a chance to play big RB role FB-HBACK-TE

I simply havent seen a lot of talent from him.

    What do you guys think?

I know its only one day BUT it the reports are that our defense in controlling the line of scrimmage.
This is good for our defense BUT our biggest concern is the OLine. Is our defense simply that good or is or Oline simply that bad.

I know its premature. Very premature, but it definately alreaady comes to mind.

the defences traditionally start faster than offences, and this carries over into pre-season and the first few weeks of the season.

    Donnyposner,

Dont read to much into where a player plays with, whether first team, second team, etc, its the first week, they’re going to try different things, they had the tightend Hannam playing linebacker on some plays. if you were the coach, wouldn’t you want to see what a player can do against first team talent and see how he reacts to it.

    Donny,

I noticed that same report on DC.com. Mick’s article reported that Pat McQuistan was working with the first team LT in front of Columbo. Mick also noted that Greg Ellis was working as a stand-up outside linebacker. The blog mentioned that Ellis was working one the line?

    DP,
Polite was a rook last year so i
cut him some slack also our O-line
problems didn’t help him much.I agree
BP likes him otherwise we would
    have seen Sowell signed.I’ve heard
BP praise his hard work and intelligence in his press conferences.

    TY Gunner!!

Donny, Parcells said he likes Polite as a H-back/F-back type. At mini camp he commented about using him in short yardage plays, and commented on his intelligence in his last news cconference. I think he may be competing with the 4th and 5th TEs as well as Tyson Thompson and possibly Demetrious Summers too. Looks like he has a good shot at making the 53 man.

    donnyposner on July 29th, 2006 10:39 pm

    Eric-

I get all that. I’m asking—from what you’ve seen, does it seem to you, he has the skills to fill those roles? He seems stiff to me without the athletecism to be a short yardage back and wasnt a great blocker either. He just seems athletically limited. I get he is intelligent and that Paarcells likes him. He probably works his As…off. I’m just wondering what everyone thinks of his ability from what they saw last year and beyond.

I’d love to be wrong. Trust me, I’d be happy to be wrong

Ryan Hannam working with the Nickel Lb’s.

Has he played any LB in college or even High School. Someone must have seen something, but I’d like to know more about this experiment.

I did an internet search and found nothing.

Parcells, liked Blade too. Tried him at FB and all kinds of positions to try and justify his posiition on the roster. It’s something all Bill prodigies do. It doesn’t mean the kid makes the roster. Thompson would have to blow it big time for Polite to make the roster. And that’s assuming Summers has no talent.

  25. 25
    Trey on July 29th, 2006 11:34 pm

I too found it wierd that Hannam would be lined up as a LB, but unless they reassigned his number this morning, he practiced with the LBs wearing the defenses blue uniform.

I don’t make too much of who practices with the first unit in the first day of camp. Neither Columbo or Pat McQuistan are going to start and they are not going to win the backup job in a day. Likewise Carpenter is likely to be better then third string.

    Trey on July 30th, 2006 12:04 am

Most of the afternoon practice was held on the far field so it was a little harder to see. Between that and bringing two of my kids to this practice I saw only 60% of the practice.

From what I saw Owens had a good practice. He caught a deep one in drills and in scrimmage. He also scored on goal line. The two TE thing, looked effective in goal line. The offense scored half the plays in that drill. I remember them not being that successful in same drill last camp.

Ware had a pick and six play on a short screen pass in the RB / LB pass drills. Barber looked very good in this drill, beating his man consistently. One play he ran a seam route and Ware covered him tightly, but he made the tough catch with a hand in the face.

A fun sight was watching the defensive lineman do some very physical drills with blocking and tackling dummies. Ferguson went all out on one play diving through one of the tackling dummies.

    Raf,

    Thanks for the post.

Has there been any revised recovery timeline after the surgery announcement?

    Trey,

    No, thank you.

    Nothing detailed on Spears yet.

As for the two TE, what I remember last year was that Witten was unstoppable. When Dallas got into real games, teams double teamed him, so Keyshawn got a lot of attention.

Now, with T.O. and Witten, if they’re scoring half the time, it sounds like the ball is being spread around. Barber, because of his hands, gets the reps in this set, I’m guessing.

    Is that what you saw?

    Eric R on July 30th, 2006 12:46 am

    donny,

I thought he didn’t look good as a lead blocker at times last year. But that FB position is one I am guessing we won’t see much of. .. Despite remembering wiffing on some blocks, I recall a pitch on a 3rd and 1 (possibly 4th and 1) against Philly (game 1). He made an outstanding block that sprung Julius for a nice gain. .. He also had a TD catch. My recollection of that play was he ran into open space on the sideline and made a nice grab. .. Stiff? No. Still learning? Yes. .. Parcells comments about him being a short yardage player came after a question about who is looking improved from last season. I believe he added some muscle weight, which may help there. .. My opinion is Polite needs to be more consistant. Something a lot of young players need to improve. His size gives him an advantage over any RBs competing with him. A big back is something this team lacks. If he can be that guy, it would be a very nice cushion for Parcells to fall back upon. Because if he can be our short yardage guy and also play H-back/TE, that would save a valuable roster spot.

Hannam didn’t played with the Defense in Northern Iowa, he did played Defense in High School in St. Ansgar (Iowa), was a DLineman.

At 6-2 and 255 he certainly has the size and speed to be a LB in the 3-4, this is indeed interesting, to me Parcells is just finding out how versatile the guy is knowing that he’s signed for 4 years.

    Trey on July 30th, 2006 10:11 am

Due to where I sat vs where the o-line practiced I have yet to get a good look at how individual offensive linemen are doing.

Barber did score once in the goaline drill, but they mixed up the RB.

Witten is going to be a beast with TO and Glenn on the outside. He got more catches then anyone else in the two scrimages. Nothing long, but lots of ten and fifteen yard catches.

    Trey,

I don’t think that’s Hannam you were watching at linebacker.

The Cowboys brought in a linebacker from Europe (under some obscure NFL program) named Carl-Johann Bjork. He is wearing #48, according to the roster at DallasCowboys.com. Hannam has switched to #86. Ahmad Merritt, who had been listed at that number, is now listed at #10, with Skyler Green switching to #6.

Ya can’t tell the players without a scorecard!

    Gunner on July 30th, 2006 11:26 am

From what I remember about Polite (I’m a Polite fan) was BP saying he was the strongest and possibly the most athletic talent on the team. Now with people like TT and Newman that says something. This year I’m hearing a different story-He’s smart and versatile but needs to work on his consistency. That sounds to me like he solved the issues from last year and he’s no longer raw. He’ll make the team if for no other reason than BP will still keep a FB somewhere on the roster and he’s a ST stud.
And remember last year the only reason we went with only one FB was because we had four tailbacks with Anthony A-Train Thomas

    Digger on July 30th, 2006 12:46 pm

With our D practicing against the likes of TO, TG, and JW along with Crayton, et. al., it would seem that they should be able to defend just about anyone from opposing teams. At least that’s what one would logically assume would they not?

  37. 37
    Trey on July 30th, 2006 1:21 pm

    Mr. Bill,

Thanks…you are correct. The roster sheet they handed out at the door is already out of date.

To make matters worse Hannam and Carl-Johann Bjork have similar builds.

Likewise it was Ahmad Merritt who dropped a few passes after beeting his man to get open.

I will not get to make today’s 2:00 practice, but I try and take off work early on Monday so I can see the afternoon practice.

I will try to watch Ayodele and Elam and get a picture of McQuistan; but to ome degree it depends on where each practices and where you sit. The best place to watch the o-line has been an area that they reserved for the press.

    Luke,

This goes back to several posts before….

I’m glad someone else noticed just how bitter Dale Hansen is when purportedly “analyzing” the cowboys. The guy hates Bill Parcells, and maybe Jerry too. I don’t get him.

If anyone watches tomorrow. can you tell me how MB and JJ do from the backfield? It sounds to me like they aren’t moving the ball much, although I heard MB got a red zone TD. Dying to know how the O- line holds up. Is hannam opposite Witten on the first team? Anyone see how my boy Anthony Fasano is working out?
Yeah, I noticed inconsistencies on the roster handout last year. I’m bringing my own this time by name and by number, and a depth chart. Wish I had a laptop so I could read the blog next weekend from camp. Man, I am exited! But sure wish Spears wasn’t hurt. Well, thats the NFL.

Got something to say?
