Practice Report, Sunday, July 30th

Posted: July 30, 2006 @ 11:26 pm

Blog regular DonnyPosner report in. Take a bow, Donny,

I was at practice today and this is what I saw.

I’m not a scout and some things are difficult to see because they are on the far field, but my opinions may be interesting to some.

I noticed Pat Watkins first. He is tall. How could I not. He is also fluid with good hands.. In both 7-7 drills and 11-11, he got to the ball very quickly. He made several pics on 7-7 drills and made a great play stopping Keylon Kincade on a swing pass for no gain. He covers a lot of ground quickly. He looked like the best guy out there other then Keith Davis who also played well. Marcus Colemen split time between corner and Safety. He looked ok at corner but was slow diagnosing the play as a Safety.

Looking over at the far field, I saw Skyler Green running routes and dropping a pass. Only one that I saw though. Later he fielded punts and looked good doing that. He is a left handed QB for those that dont know.

TNewman looks great. He is far an away the best corner we have. Jacques Reeves looked like our second best corner on this day. He continually picked off passes in the 7-7 drills and played well in 11-11.

Jason Hatcher looks like he will be a good one. He is big, physical, and quick. He was getting to the would be QB in 1 on-1 and 2-on-2 drills. He did well against Flozell Adams on at least 2 occassions. Vontrell Jamison is a big guy as well. He looks like he can play but not sure he is in the top tier on the team. He beat McQuistan several times. Greg Ellis is playing standing up lining up close to the DE creating a 5 man line. He looked quick actually. I think he’ll make the transition and play well. Jay Ratliff looked good and beat Peterman on 2 occassions. Sam Taulealea pushed Al Johnson straight back to where the QB would be.

Yes. Flo was out there and was playing ok. He was definately the best tackle out there. As I said Hatcher did a good job against him but other then Hatcher he seemed to block everyone.

Other then Flo, Marc Columbo looked like the best tackle to me. He and Kevin Burnett got in a big fight which got the fans roaring asking for more and the players had to pull them off each other. McQuistan and Dennis Roland were getting beat often.

The best Offensive lineman on this day definately looked like Andre Gurode. I was one of those that thought that Al Johnson would beat him out but today Gurode looked really good. He seemed to stop all defensive lineman in their tracks. Johnson did not look as good and was getting pushed back at times and let a couple past him. Rivera looked to be the second best and played very well. Stephen Peterman would make a good block and then let someon past him. He seems to have the abiliy but is very inconsistent. Kyle Kosier did not stick out either way.

I noticed this linebacker number 53 making plays, he is big, and always seems to be around the ball. The guide at practice doesnt list the number. I think it is Kai Parham. He looked good. Very good actually.

Pepper Johnson and Mount Stanley both made some plays. Stanley was often using a 4 point stance with both hands on the ground. Ferguson is clearly better though and his battles vs Gurode were the best match ups to see.

Chris Canty is huge but he didnt seem to be impressive on this day. He got stonewalled by Gurode and Rivera.

Sean Ryan dropped several passes in 11-11 drills A couple hit him right in his hands and popped up in the air. I wanted to cut him then and there. Tony Curtis is big. I couldnt see his blocking but he made several good grabs. He did have a drop in 11-11n drills however. Anthony Fasano made a couple catches on 11-11.

Sam Hurd the rookie free agent WR almost blocked a punt. Number 10…not sure who he is may be Ahmed Merritt dropped more then a few passes. He is the ony other guy other then Sean Ryan that I would have cut after the day. Bad Day for those 2. Terrence Copper made some nice grabs in 11-11. Patrick Crayton looked good as well. Copper was suprsingly good.

Demarcus Ware was very impressive. He will be a Pro Bowler this year. I think Parcells must have goten to this guy and convinced him he could be LT. Watch out. He even impressed me covering TO on a crossing route. He was closer to getting the ball then TO. The crowd got on TO’s case saying he should be able to catch those, but Ware made a great play. He is quick around the edge.

Overall, Ware, Burnett, Parham, Tony Curtis, Gurode, Rivera, Hatcher, TNewman, and Pat Watkins impressed me the most.

Sean Ryan, Ahmed Merrit and Stephen Petermen were dissapointing

    Nice Recap.
    You guys Rock!
This is my first training camp to follow on this site and I can’t believe I ever survived without.
This is so much better than the same old same old interview with a TV guy and some beat writer discussing the possible impact of T.O. on the other offensive players’ game.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you ALL!

Yes, what a refreshing change from visiting the official site and reading only rehashes of Parcells’ latest press conferece, which I have already heard.

Many thanks to DannyPosner, Trey and all the others who are taking the trouble to keep us informed with their excellent observations.

Yes thanks danny and others…..great coverage! I had a feeling which I stated after the draft that Kai Parham was going to be a player to watch. He was a beast in college but had a slow 40 time but always seems to be around the ball…..

Gurode’s main problem is the snap count. Either he forgets what it is, or he’s scared of getting beat.

I wonder if Pat Watkins ends up doing well in camp/preseason if the Cowboys will cut either Davis or Coleman. If Davis didn’t just sign a new contract, he would be cut already. I would be looking over my shoulder quite a bit if I were either of those two.

Really liked Gurode when he was drafted, but it’s pretty bad when the Center forgets the snap count, no? ;)

Hatcher sounds like a real power player. I imagine Flo still needs to work the legs and base into shape, but the news on Hatcher seems promising.

Al Johnson…hmm…what was KC Joyner saying again? I got excited for a sec about Sam Taulealea at NT, but then I realized everybody pushes Al Johnson around.

Thanks to Donny for the first hand accounts.

    cto,

IMO Coleman is gone if Watkins turns it on. Coleman can play corner, but Reeves has been getting great reviews from a lot of sources I’ve read so he (Coleman) won’t have much of a purpose if he can’t play safety better than a rookie. Davis will stay. I have little doubt about that. He is a STs monster and would make a quality backup at either safety position. We could even survive if he was the starter, but I hope Watkins outshines him in that role.

Donny, fantastic write up. Thank you (and thanks to all of you out there that are contributing) very much for taking the time to fill in us unfortunate souls that can’t make it out there!!

Guys, haven’t posted in a while because of work, divorce, etc, but I have not gone a day without reading the blogs. It has been so refreshing to read all of the comments and tremendous insight from everyone on this blog. I have gotten to the point that I never watch Sportscenter any more, because I get everything I need right here! Donny, awesome job on your evailuations. I think it takes a special talent to be able to not only see who beats who on the field, but also to take notes and then put it into words that everyone can understand. On the safety front, my thoughts and hopes are that Watkins wins the FS job, allowing Davis to really dominate on special teams whole spelling Watkins at time to time. This would probably make Coleman expendable, saving some cap space but more importantly, opening up another roster spot!

    Fighter15 on July 31st, 2006 8:00 am

That’s a great point. We’ve got so much young talent that we really need to be cognizant of some spots.

Unless a veteran is a starter or important situational player, we should go with youth at the position.

Both Colemans (Kenyon & Marcus), Pile, and Fowler need to really be far better than the youngsters to stay on the team. I actually expect all to be gone at the end of the day.

On offense, I can only see vets. That makes me worried. Damn, I’m peeved that we haven’t drafted OL well. It may very well be this teams achilles heal.

From the first weekend, would you guys say that our O line might be:
Flo,Kosier,Gourode,Rivera,Pettiti? From what I have heard, Marco is looking tough and should be able to play both LT and RT. I know Parcells likes to start Al Johnson so he can have Gourode back up 2 posistions. Would you rather have Andre mess up a few calls or would you rather have a center that gets pushed around half the time? Honestly, I want the 5 strongest and meanest guys out there. Guys that are gonna wear you down and make you pay for lining up infront of them. Also with Pierce out, does that give Polite a better chance of sticking as an HB?

I was stupid enough to venture away from this site for Cowboy info and was greeted with this from Dale Hansen, he verbalised out of his foul poison filled mouth that Dallas is a “Mickey Mouse operation” under Bill Parcells and he goes on to call Jerry Jones “Goofy”. This is the second time I have heard from him and the second time he was ripping into Dallas and especially Jerry and Bill. Who is this bitter old prick Hansen and how did he get his job? Is there some reason for his venomous dribbling? Or is it just a look at me I am a washed up old talent-less journalist who is bitter about my hollow and unfulfilling life so I must cut down people who have way more successful lives and careers? I am not against criticizing the Cowboys or Jerry or Bill if there are legitimate concerns but this guy just goes on and on and doesn’t even give any meaningful reasons for his attitude. Anyway I am off to sleep, and when I wake up I hope there’s some more of those good reports we’ve been getting from Trey and Donny so then I won’t have to venture into the bitter, self promoting idiocy of the mainstream press.

Fighter, I’ve got to believe that in next years draft, we NEED to get a stud receiver, several on the OL, and maybe even QB. Would really love to see Romo in some game situations this year to see what we have. Not so sure Henson even makes it through camp this year. I like the kid, but…..Hoping BP stays around for at least another year. He sure knows how to draft!

Kai Parham. Dad was in the show. Great strength (30 reps?) Projected by some a 3rd-4th rounder. Very good production in ACC. He played better than Brooks last year. Only knock was a bad 40 time, but how fast does Jerimiah Trotter run the 40 (his name is a hint)?

Big run stuffer in the middle. Love it. Would take a lot of pressure off the edges of this defense to have good depth at ILB.

    Donny,

You weren’t the only one to notice Pat Watkins. Parcells said several times yesterday that the secondary should be much improved. He commented that the Cowboys added some “size” and depth. During the press conference I wondered who is he talking about? I assumed Watkins, but wasn’t sure. Now with your report, its seems pretty obvious.

Also, did you say Ellis is lined up outside on what appears to be a 5 man line?? Well, I ain’t going to mention any names but I am quite sure I heard that specific formation speculated about here on this blog. Yeah I took some brutal comments about how stupid I was to even think Ellis would attempt that position. Well boys he who laughs last laughs loudest. Good luck Greg!! And glad to hear that you can still share a couple of laughs with the coach. …. I have a few words for Ellis that he may not know very well .. Pro Bowl and Playoffs!!!

. . .and Burnett impressive? Wow, if Parham and Burnett push for playing time this year, our defense will be brutally tough. I once wrote that we need Singleton for veteran presence, but if he can’t keep up, then slot in these guys (but it is only week 1.)

Retraction-I think it is Brooks whose Dad was in show. Maybe also Parham. But Parham does come from Groh’s program and Parcells will know everything about him. Could be diamond in rough.

    Dale Hansen is a Hater.

He hated Jones from the beginning. He is an ‘America’s Team’ Cowboy fan and never embraced change even when it resulted in three SB victories in the early 90’s.

Now he knocks Parcells for being ‘an East Coast coach’, as if that has anything to do with his ability.

Hansen’s claim to fame is that he reported on the SMU football scandal. He also regularly lambasted the ‘Boys pecadillos during their most recent SB runs. It’s his MO to rip things down.

He hangs out in Dallas bars and tries to pick up women by telling them he’s on TV. What a loser. Like an UN-Funny Champ from the movie Anchorman. Get over yourself Hansen.

Don’t forget Hansen used to be the color guy on the radio broadcasts during the Super Bowl years of the ’90s. Jerry replaced him. I imagine that has a lot to do with Dale’s bitterness.

When Parcells says that his biggest concern is the offensive line, its not just conjecture. Watching practice, you can actually see that it is a concern.
We will not really know til they’ve played a couple games as a unit but there are reasons to be concerned. My biggest concern after the day would be Center. Johnson simply didnt look strong or tough and was getting beat. Gurode looked good but if he has problems with he line calls and the snap, then you cant have him in there. I wish I could see more of Pettiti and Fabini but they were often on the other side and difficult to see.
    Rivera looks good
    Gurode looks good
Flo will again be the rock
    Columbo looked good
    Kosier ?
    Johnson ?
    Peterman ?
    Pettiti ?
    Fabini ?

Does anyone thin that Lincoln Kennedy can return and help this club?

I remember that he waas a big deal coming out of college but I thought he struggled some as a pro?

Jacques Reeves is really heating it up this summer. He played well last training camp, enough to earn him the 4th corner spot.

But it seems as if Reeves impressive play could push Parcells to sit down Aaron Glenn as that nickel corner.

Either way, Reeves will get a lot more playing time compared to last year.

And does anyone have any reports on Justin Beriault? He caused plenty of discussion in this blog. Now it seems as if he’s fallen between the cracks.

Reeves looked veery good to me. He doesnt have the experience Glenn has but seems to be outplaying him. The question is- Does Bill Parcells trust him to be the 3rd corner?
I hope so becuase it seems he is earning it.

Beriault was out there. He did NOT look as good as Watkins to me. He was good filling in on the run but not as quick as Watkins. I didnt see him make many plays on the ball in the 7 on 7’s or he 11 on 11’s. BUT everyone has their good days and bad days. Beriault wasnt bad, he just didnt appear as good as Watkins or Davis

Davis is still the best bet for FS. He played well. He fills nicely and made several plays on the ball with a interception in 11 on 11.
Watkins in challenging but will Parcells trust Watkins in his first year?

Keep us informed as usual. I was one of the people thinking we would end up with a good O-line. I had said it would take a while to get back on their feet (Adams, Rivera), but thought that gelling would be the big hurdle.

They haven’t gotten too far into camp yet and our defense is awesome, but… The drills you are describing don’t have much to do with playing together or scheme, they are based on ability to handle one on one. We are talking basics here.

I still have some hope and it is too early to get worried, but this isn’t starting they way we would want it to.

You are still mistaken. Trotter tore an ACL in 2002 and has been in the league 8 years, adding 10 lbs. Did he run a 4.687654 yesterday? Welcome to the now, 1998 Stat boy.

    madcowboy on July 31st, 2006 11:21 am

Dale Hansen is absolutely awful. He doesn’t even try to hide his hatred for the Cowboys.

Just one example… He spent about 30 minutes last Thursday going on and on about how the Cowboys were one of the worst sports organizations, mostly because they didn’t let him have enough access. He blamed Parcells by name over and over again. What is this guy’s problem? He thinks everything is about him. His betterness is amazing.

Another example . . . Last Thursday he promised never to ask BP a question directly “because Bill has no real influence.” He promised to direct all of his questions to Jerry, no matter how awkward. I paid attention during the press conference, and sure enough, he directed all his questions toward Jerry, not Bill. Hansen sucks.

There is a lot of time left in camp. There are many days left to screw up, get injured and shine. Watching one day of practice, doesnt say much.
On Sunday, Parham looks like he would make the team over Fowler, Shanle. But its only one day.
Watkins looked great but its only one day. The next day he could let 3 TD’s go by him. If these guys show consistency, then they are going to not only make the team but contribute IMO

When your boy Parham makes the Pro Bowl 4 times in his career, then feel free to pop off. Other wise, you need to think hard about who you are comapring players to and by the way, if you knew your players, Trotter weighs the same now as he did in college, so where you pulled this “added 10 pounds” crap from once again shows you have no clue.

I don’t know about Parham. I won’t believe he’ll make the team until I see it. I don’t think he’s got what it takes to cover punts or kickoffs. He’s a load, no question. But I don’t think a pro punt returner would have a problem juking Parham. He’s so thick. Also, the depth chart guys at LB have to be able to be versatile. The guys there now are just OK, but they’re OK in many roles. Do you want Parham, who is good in between the tackles, and likely poor everywhere else, or do you want just OK at everywhere?

I wonder if we might change our blocking schemes. From what I understand, we were always a man on man drive blocking team where stregth and weight are big plus’s Is it possible that we may use more zone blocking this year like Denver and Atlanta in which the lineman tend to be lighter and more agile?

I would really like to ask Tony Sparano about this.

I watched a small portion of a Dale Hansen / Matt Mosley video report. I had to turn it off less than a third of the way in, it was just too painful.

    My impressions were:

    1)Hansen is bitter.
2)Mosley doesn’t have the nuts to challenge Hasen.
3)Both goofed on JJ’s optimism (mostly Hansen with lapdog Mosley agreeing), while failing to mention that Las Vegas makes us the NFC representative favorite.
4)They spoke about lack of depth at QB as major concern as to why this team will not go far. Here are the 4 backup QBs for the teams that made the Conference Championship games last year. Pitt-Charlie Batch, Denver-Bradlee Van Pelt, Carolina-Chris Weinke and Seattle-Seneca Wallace.

For those questioning the play of Al Johnson and his inhability to hold his ground:

Guys, that’s not his strength, as of right nopw I haven’t heard that the team is practicing the drills that come in line with his strength, which is pulling.

Kosier falls in the same description, let’s wait to see what the guy can do while pulling, if those 2 guys excell at pulling, they are going to offset whatever deficiency they have holding their ground, because with the 2 TE set and having Owens and Glenn teams are going to have problems if 2 OLineman go trough the cracks to open the RB way.

  43. 43
    reldbr on July 31st, 2006 11:58 am

Oh, now now Mr ‘ProScout’ (parenthesis added). Are you weighing Trotter in now too? NO ONE argues that Trotter is bigger AND slower then his first go around with the Eagles. That’s why he is an ILB (but if you knew that, then your handle would be ‘Pro Coach’)

I never said Parham (who might still make 4 Pro Bowls, he’s just a rookie) was as good as Trotter has been. I never said anything bad against Trotter. I simply praised Parham and compared his CURRENT speed at ILB to the CURRENT speed of a player who excels at that position (Trotter.) Pardon me for expressing optimism about a player who may have been discounted too heavily for his lack of high-end 40 speed. The kid is 21. He’s barely fully developed.

In your zeal to thwart me, Scout Team, you fail to grasp the real point. Football players play foot ball. They dont run 40’s on Sunday and do bench reps. This thread is about PLAYERS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD that have impressed early on. As a COWBOY FAN, I hope Parham can develop into a solid ILB and think he can based on what I have seen of him (in college). You can root against him all you want, but stop getting your butt kicked by me on this site because you sleep with 10 year old combine results under your pillow everty night and leap at the first opportunity to spout them off.

Scout Team, come clean. You’re really Hansen aren’t you.

    Joey-
Those stat comparisons excite me even more about Parham. Not too far off. Remember, he is a free agent for a reason, but to get a situational run-stuffer for essentially nothing would be huge. And also remember, it is Donny — not me — who has been impressed with him based on his observations at camp.

Hey, Pro Scout and Redlbr, i didn’t mean to enter into your argument. It took me so long to find that combine data, that about an hour and a half passed before I entered it (I’m “working” also).
I opened my response long before you two started your discussion.
I found that it’s not easy to find combine data. Some numbers are confused with Pro Day work out numbers, and some tests Trotter did way back in ‘98 are no longer done today, and vice versa. It’s also impossible to get correct heights and weights.

By the by, Parham will never be Jeremiah Trotter. Trotter was 72nd overall out of SF Austin. Parham wasn’t drafted and he came from Al Groh’s 3-4. While past performance doesn’t ensure future worth, I don’t think Parham will be a starter at ILB. I do think, however, if he lost 20lbs, he could be a good OLB. And no, i have nothing at all to back that up beyond a rank amateur’s self serving right to spout off.

    Miamicowboy on July 31st, 2006 12:12 pm

Parham was brought in because Parcells saw something. Knowing how many LBs we lost last year, don’t you think Parcells will want a 260lb monster in on running downs and give some one a breather? I would say he’s got a very good shot making the roster.

According to Mosley Merritt was just cut. Also Byron Parker and JJ Horne, while we also signed that Frederickson guy for kicker.

I guess someone was listening when it was stated here that Merritt should be cut.

Well, spouted Joey. I agree with you Parham will LIKELY never be Trotter. In fact, I never compared Parham to Trotter as a player. I simply compared their timed speed. Now.

But remember this. Trotter was out of work a few years ago and re-signed to the Eagles for the league minimum as a backup with no guarantees. He has been up and he has been down. And things like that do happen to players. Free Agents can develop, and top draft choices can fail.

Do I hope Parham will be good? Hell yes I do. Can I tell you exactly what he’ll do? No, but no one, not even Scout Team, can.

About Kai Parham, just about every mock draft had us taking this guy in the 2nd round when college football season ended. They said he was a big 3-4 ILB who was always around the ball and could hit hard. He slipped alittle as people moved up, and before the combine most had him going to us in the 3rd. And then the combine….

Parham looked horrible at the combine. That is why he is in here undrafted. He could not move, his hips werent fluid, and scouts said the only thing this guy could do was move up and down, and on top of that he was slow. I hope maybe he had some sort of injury and we could have a steal, but I think it will be hard to make the team at a position that is suddenly deep. I have Ware, James, Adoyele, Carpenter, Boiman, Burnett as locks. Singelton will make it IMO after his praise from Parcells. That leaves guys like SHanle, Fowler, Saldi, Parham, I dont think Im forgetting anyone. It will be hard.

Jacques Reeves has been getting great reviews everywhere. I think he will be a player on this years team. Scrimmage next Saturday, cant wait, Pepper Johnson made the team during that scrimmage, I think someone else will step up.

    proscout,

Be careful about who your comparing players to?

I don’t know reldbr but from his posts, all he is doing is giving an analysis on a player.

Everyday upcoming athletes get compared to the kings of the game.

Are they saying they’re just as good as the hall of famer? No, of course not.

When the pads come on it doesn’t matter if Kai Parham ran a slow 40 time, even though players run 40 yards all the time throughout a game, to me it just doesn’t seem that big of a deal.

If Parham continues to make plays, he will make team.

I have heard Trotter talk about his knees, and from what I’ve heard they are pretty shot. I doubt he runs the 4.6 he did coming out of college. Does anyone still think Greg Ellis runs the 4.7 he did coming out of college? I know Willie McGinist doesn’t run the 4.4 he did coming out of USC.

What they do have at this point in time to make up for lost youth, is football speed.

    Cash,
I remember the talk around terrel suggs of the ravens when he came out. I don’t remember the numbers, but he wasn’t putting up the expected 40 times(not as bad as Kai). he has essentially proven that there is a difference between football speed and timed speed. I see 8 LBs kept. it will be between Kai and Shanle for the eight slot. Shanle’s got him in pass coverage and kai is probably better in run coverage.

I am not sure why the disagreement between proscout and reldbr has turned into a mudfest, but I see no need for it. The real shame is that this would be a good discussion were it not for the cheap shots.

    Now more to the topic…

The measurable comparisons between Parham and Trotter seem to indicate they each started their careers on similar footing. Now that Trotter is a vet, we know he has outplayed his measurables. We don’t yet know if Parham can follow the same path, but we may get a few clues in the next couple of weeks.

Remember, Parcells seems to care very little (or none) about where a player is drafted. Every player has a “fair” chance. So Parham just needs to do two things. First, he must not get injured. Second, he must produce. Pretty simple, eh?! Hehehe!

I have not seen any camp happenings and this is based solely on what others have reported but just a couple of my surprises.

O-line still questionable and may not know for some time now.

Hatcher, Reeves, and Crayton seem like they are rising up to meet the challenges and could make a big splash.

Keep us posted on the running backs (including TT), the O-line movement and what team (I assume BP will play with that a little bit for a while), safety ( RWilliams and Beriault probably won’t shine until pads come on), and Fasano. You are our eyes and ears and we have gotten used to the good reporting so you have the bar set pretty high.

Wow. I said I’d cut Ahmed Merrit and now he’s gone. I’m just lucky on that but its still rather cool.
We’ll see what happens with Sean Ryan vs. ATony Curtis. Curtis looked better but it was only one day and I couldnt assess thier blocking only their ability in the passing game. Curtis has a size advantage over Ryan as well.

At this point, we have no clue if Parham will make the team, pracice squad, or be cut. My opinion, however, after seeing him in one practice is that he can play in this league and possibly be as good as Trotter. He didnt look slow nor un athleic. He appears more athletic then Lousake Polite IMO. I think he could play the position they hyave Greg Ellis playing as a stand up LB in a 5 man line or the ILB position.
The locks to me are probably Ware, Burnett, Ayodele, James, Boiman, Carpenter. I also think Singleton will definately make the team and probably start day one. That is 7 so it will be difficult for Parham to make it considering their are others with more experience in he NFL and on this team. Parham did look better to me then the rest, but that is one day. I think it will be between Fowler, Shanle, and Parham for the last spot. Parham could also be signed to the Practice squad.

    How many DB’s do we carry? 7? 8? 9?

Williams, Davis, TNEW, AHenry, jReeves are he locks.

I think Watkins makes it. That is 6.

    Coleman vs. Glenn
    Beriault? Pile?

Pile looked better then Coleman as a safety on Sunday but Coleman looked decent at corner and Pile can not play corner. Who is better at corner– Glenn or Coleman? I cant say.

  62. 62
    donnyposner on July 31st, 2006 3:14 pm

They are in pads…..they hit at 50%…they hit but not 100% except for the lineman who I think are going 100%

  63. 63
    Shane J on July 31st, 2006 3:21 pm

Correction, what I meant by ‘when the pads come on’ is when they get it going with full team action (this was in reference to RWiliiams and JBeriault). These guys game is not in playing patty cake, its in hitting. They will not shine until that happens.

By the way, I don’t want him hurt, but I sure wouldn’t mind a RWilliams meets TO across the middle action. Wishful thinking and not a good idea, but fun to think about anyway.

  65. 65
    donnyposner on July 31st, 2006 3:26 pm

    Shane

They run 11 on 11 for 20 minutes or so several times throughout the day. They must have run 11 on 11 3 or 4 times. The Dline and Oline were going full out. The LB, CB, and S would only hit tthe WR, TE, andr RB at 50%.

I assume this is to prevent injury while getting an idea of what the players can do

  66. 66
    donnyposner on July 31st, 2006 3:29 pm

My biggest question is about the Oline blocking scheme. Are we going to run more zone blocking which would beenfit Johnson and Kosier OR are we going to run more man on man which would benefit Gurode. Rivera looks like he can do both well.

  67. 67

    donny,

Parcells hardly ever gives rookies any “good press” … usually says that they have to show him more than a few practices. But he was rather high on Watkins. … So you have two very good reports under your belt (Meritt and Watkins). Better than those other guys!! Plus I believe you about the 5 man line and Ellis!!

hey guys….I go to every UVA football game and have for the last five years, Parham is a monster. He is like the smart kid that tests bad, the boy is good and will do great. I had him on my board for us and was glad we got him undrafted, i saw it like an extra pick in the draft. There are seats on the Kai Parham bus….hop on.

    Chandus on July 31st, 2006 4:04 pm

    Donny:
It’s going to be man on man, look at Rivera’s age, I think it would be wise to save his legs for the 16 games.

Flo and Petitti don’t fit the type of Tackles that a zone blocking scheme needs.

What we saw last season was Al Johnson being really effective pulling and Larry Allen playing the bullfighter role while pulling. (Want to see how bad he was? Go to youtube.com and search for Terry Glenn’s TD in a reverse against KC).

Just because right now Dallas may have 2 good pulling Lineman doesn’t means that the OLine is changing schemes, it just means that Parcells would like to see more pulling plays.

Taking into consideration how the passing game should open defenses with Owens, Glenn and the 2 TE set, I can certainly understand why would Parcells want to see more pulling.

    Fighter15 on July 31st, 2006 4:11 pm

Actually, there’s a write up a few weeks back talking about the ‘Boys changing direction with the OL to more of a zone blocking scheme.

Most of BP’s Giants and Patriots teams employ the style. Just not to the extent of Denver & Atlanta. But definitely a zone blocking scheme.

The article was in deference to Kosier vs. LA.

  72. 72
    joey2zs on July 31st, 2006 4:13 pm

In Parcells’ press conference he said that Gurode is just better against bigger 3-4 NTs due to Gurode’s build. He said that he expects Al Johnson to be able to get to the second level vs 4-3 DTs. Said they each have different strengths. I don’t know if that means there will be a rotation at center, I can’t imagine they’d do that.

  73. 73
    Shane J on July 31st, 2006 4:24 pm

We have complained off and on about the center rotation with Gurode and Johnson. From the QB adjusting to the different techniques (fumbled snaps) to the anchoring of the line and continuity.

BP however doesn’t seem to share our concern and has seemed quite thrilled to be able to interchange them according to teams and schemes.

He has done this for a little whie now and I don’t see that changing unless one of them just flat out plays the other all around. Will be interesting for this to play out once again in camp and pre-season.

I would assume that he wants Johnson to win it so that Gurode can be used to backup other line positions that Johnson cannot play.
