Napping Into First Place

Posted: November 26, 2006 @ 7:01 pm

In week two, the Giants staged a 17 point fourth quarter comeback to tie a game with the Eagles. New York won in overtime, with abundant help from butterfingered Eagles.

Today, the good luck boomeranged, as New York blew a 21-0 fourth quarter lead. Mental breakdowns and some amazing Vince Young plays pushed Tennessee to a 24-21 win. Cowboys players, likely sleeping off their Sunday afternoon naps, woke up in first place.

How do you lose such a game? Let us count the ways:

The Giants, playing with a severely undermanned defense, had stopped the Titans’ few early challenges. A goal line stop of Young just before half kept the Titans off the board.

The Giants then played keep away, holding the football for 12:03 in the third quarter. With the game in hand, Eli Manning went after an unneeded bomb, throwing 35 yards downfield on second-and-four from his own 35 three minutes into the fourth. PacMan Jones, who also wins a gold star for his late play, intercepted the ball and returned it 26 yards to the Giants 46.

The Giants defense still played tough, stopping Young for seven yards on a 4th-and-9 scramble. A personal foul flag for an elbow to Young’s head gave Tennessee new downs inside the Giants’ ten and they finally dented the scoreboard three plays later.

A long Jones punt return put Tennessee on a short field that they covered for a second touchdown. Even then, another forced Giants punt found Tennessee facing a fourth and ten on their own 24. Here, Young called upon some of his old Texas magic. He escaped an apparent Mathius Kiwanuka sack and ran 19 yards for a first down. On the Giants radio broadcast, the announcers claimed, “Tom Coughlin is running out towards Kiwanuka yelling, “why did you let him go?”

A 20 yard pass and another Young scramble, this one for sixteen yards, set up a fourteen yard TD pass to Brandon Jones with 49 seconds left.

That only tied the game. Manning gave the Titans a chance at a regulation win with a second interception. PacMan Jones picked this one off as well, giving the Titans possession at the New York 49 with 23 seconds left. Young completed two short passes to New York’s 31 before Rob Bironas blasted a 49 yard game winning field goal with six seconds left.

The Giants Jeremy Shockey talked big last week about owning Dallas. He has a point. New York has won four of the last five matches and none of the Giants wins have been close. However, it appears New York has been overly obsessed with Dallas. Like the Eagles, who lost three in a row after defeating the Cowboys, the Giants have now lost three straight entering their Dallas rematch.

Not a bad way to spend a sleepy Sunday, huh Cowboys fans?

    Rafael,
coughlin ran toward kiwanuka who was bent over after the play (standing about 10 feet from the sideline).

he knelt down in front of him and screamed up at him. it was amazing.

i think he really thought young had thrown it. he turned around and looked downfield and young just took off. even then, a defender had a chance to stop him well short of the 1st down and young just juked his jock off.

    BEEEAUTIFUL.

    From the last thread:

Remaining schedules. you all know ours.

    here’s our competition:
    Saints
    Gints
    Panthers
    Seattle

lets not think about the bears just yet (even though they lost).

    Schedules:
NO-san fran, at dallas, DC, AT NY GINTS, carolina

Gints-Dallas, at Carolina, Philly, NO, at DC

Carolina (we own the tie breaker)-
at philly, Gints, Pittsburg, at atlanta, at NO

Seattle-Green bay (tomorrow), at denver, at zona, san fran, sandy eggo, at TB

As you can see, all of our competition will have a fight on their hands.

Again, we beat NO and Gints, we are sitting quite pretty.

Raf, another point, Young didn’t even “spin” away. Kiwanuka released him to scramble for that 1st down. Like I was always told since I was a boy playing football and sacking the QB, “Play to the whistle”. Somehow, some of these millionares have forgotten how to do that.

Im officially sick of blitzing on 3rd and 7 or 8.

I watched the skins/panthers for awhile. nice to see panthers lose, but the difference making play came on a 3rd and 8 for the skins around midfield. carolina blitzes SIX when the skins hadnt had a completion for more than 3 or 4 yards all day. two missed tackles later and cooley sprints into the EZ.

We have blitzed like that far too much this year.

No more blitzes on 3rd and 7-9 yards. show blitz, fine, but back out.

certainly dont do it when the ball is at midfield or closer to your EZ, you’re asking for it, and the offense WANTS you to do it.

Manning continues to make really bad mistakes that are killing the jints. Sure Burress dogged it on the one int. But there was no excuse for the second one. They could have at least gone to OT if he doesn’t make that mistake.

    emrdog on November 26th, 2006 7:57 pm

a very good friend of mine just emailed me this

“and like I said… Giants are DONE. This is my prediction for the rest of the season: Coughlin is fired at the end of the season. Eli trade speculation will arise. Tiki Barber is going to make another postgame comment that stirs up the locker room. Giants will not recover from this embarrassing loss.

Dec 3: Dallas wins by at least 17 points
Dec 10: Carolina possibly may shut out the Giants yet again
Dec 17: Philly and Giants.. who cares right? both aren’t going to make the playoffs
Dec 24: early Christmas present for the Saints, who are still going to be playing for a playoff spot unlike the Giants and thus will win
Dec 30: Washington’s D will come up big one last time for Joe Gibbs, who I don’t see coaching much longer. Eli will probably throw at least 2 INT and Tiki will retire to less than 100 yard rushing.”

The Giants lack leadership. If Strahan was healthy that melt down would not have happen.

He’ll still be out for the Boy’s game. That’s fine with me.

The Boys have a chance to bury the bums nest week. However, don’t expect them to lay down and die. There is alot of pride on their team.

I believe the Cowboys are the better team and if the avoid injuries and multiple turn-overs the East will be their’s.

Jarhead, good stuff on the schedules and our opponents. A win next week gives us a 2 game lead in the division. A loss and we’re effectively a game back of the Gmen.

Seattle has the easiest schedule of all of the 6-4 teams. Both us and Seattle have 3 conference losses, so I’m not sure who would win the tie-breaker between us and them.

Speaking of the Bears, they have no conference losses, so they effectively have a 3 game lead on us for home field. Thats a tough hill to climb with 5 to play.

The Saints have only 1 conference loss, but the head-to-head will be the deciding factor there.

The last 5 weeks are gonna be fun!

yeh, doesn’t the nfc look like garbage this year. Even the dominant team, the bears have glarring holes. it’s weird. you see a very steady decline of records through the nfc…but the afc is VERY polarized. the AFC houses some of the worst and best. so could the nfc be better than we give it credit for?

The NFC is ripe for the taking. Right now we’re the hottest team and all the other top teams have glaring weaknesses. I still think that we can’t take the Giants lightly - they will be desperate come Sunday, but then again you never know what you’ll get with this Giants team - in the past week they were saying that this game against the Titans was their season (I hope they were right :) )

Here is a post on a Ginats forum on their Official site … the writer wants giants fans to sell their tickets to Cowboy fans so that it will make a point to get Coughlin and his staff fired. Enjoy:

“ok guys, this is the plan..

1- If you are goign to the game, get a sign that rips the coach, the players watever,
2- Where a paper bag over your head if you are goign to the game
3- Dont buy anymore giants products,
4- Someone please hire a plnae to fly over the stadium saying fire coughlin
5- Sell your tickets to cowboys fans
6- If you go cheer when we do something bad
7- If you go cheer when the visitor does something good”

Giants nation is in mourning. Hopefully we win the game on Sunday and give them something else to mourn over.

Our Boys have beat a quality team and had a three game winning streak. We’ve barely heard a peep about TO or Parcells.
The last thing needed to get over the hump is to win a big division game on the road.
This game scares me a little (wounded animal factor). Hopefully the Boys come our swinging. They haven’t gotten off to fast start yet. Now would be a great time.

    Mudd,

While Henry provides quality run support for a CB, he leads the team in tackles because recivers catch alot of balls on his side of the field thus he gets several solo tackles. Newman being on the other side of the field contributes to this, but I also thought I noticed that he plays off the receiver a few yards to help prevent getting beat deep which happens to him more often than you’d like.

BTW, I made a post a few days ago about a story my pop told me about Archie Manning. I asked him about it, and I had my facts wrong, it was Bob Griese, not Manning. (Though he doesn’t like Manning because he thrashed Texas in some Bowl game way back when.)

And it was a college game actually. Apperantly Corpus tried to host a college bowl game back in the sixties called the “Challenge Bowl” in which all stars played. Bob took one look at the stadium in all it’s crappiness and decided it wasn’t worth his time. He got back on the plane and left.

That was the story anyway. Take it for what it’s worth.

You guys have to go to the Giants team website and read some of their fans comments. Here’s a quote:

I will root Eli and crew against Dallas, but it is like dating a hot girl who cheats on ya, you always take her back because she is smoking hot and everyone tells you that you are crazy if you don’t, but then she breaks your heart again. I am just sick of Eli letting us down.

    dg54 on November 27th, 2006 11:32 am

On that Adai block on D-Ware, sometimes it is the responsibility of the defender to make a play on the quarterback and if stopped from an uninterrupted run at the qb, occupy and stay with the rb to take away a safety valve dink. You do this especially if you know you have team-mates coming from the other side.

Got something to say?
