Singletary Not A DC Candidate and Other News
Posted: January 31, 2007 @ 9:42 am
– If Jerry Jones raids the 49ers for a new head coach, he will be limited to one of the top assistants Norv Turner or Mike Singletary. According to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, Turner has assured head coach Mike Nolan he would not bring any team assistants with him to Dallas. Furthermore, Singletary claims he is only interested in the head job.
– In Pamplona, Spain, they have their yearly Running of the Bulls.
At Redskins’ Park, it’s time for their yearly Restructuring of the Contracts. The Washington Post reports the team will try to reshape at least six large deals, including those for Mark Brunell, Jon Jansen, Renaldo Wynn, Philip Daniels and Shaun Springs. They’ve already reworked WR James Thrash’s contract.
Every year we hear the Redskins are tempting the salary cap gods and every year they seem to escape a reckoning. This year could be different. There’s no new CBA on the table to give Washington a major bump in cap space and the have one of, if not the worst cap situations in the league. This data is old, but it shows Washington over the cap.
What’s worse, the players being asked to restructure are providing diminishing returns for the team. Thrash is 32. Springs, Daniels, Wynn and Brunell all have ten or more seasons under their belts. When the biggest restructuring targets no longer start, as in Brunell’s case, trouble is coming.
– Sometimes you gotta laugh at yourself, or your QB. Check out the Romo’s theme song halfway down the page. I wonder if its by the same folks who made the funny yet quite bizarre video mash letter “Brady?” I hear similarities.
Yep! Same guy. He’s got WAAAAY too much time on his hands. Check out “Ron Mexico.” “He can’t throw, but they cheer him any-wayyyyaaaaa!” Speaks for itself.

i hate the skins
1st
Wash will get help from the new CBA though. the cap kicks out another 7 mill, i believe, this year. that wont hurt the skins. they still are slightly over though.
Im ok with them having some cap room, they do a lovely job of wasting it on questionable talent.
Singletary interviewed for the HC position, that doesnt mean he wouldnt consider a DC position if offered. It doesnt appear that nolan intends to make him the DC in SF. He sounds like more of a motivator than anything else.
Fighter, from the previous thread. None of the LBs you mention are shoo-in MLBs. James competed with coakley as an OLB before the switch, i dont believe ayodele played it in j-ville, and carpenter/burnette didnt play it in college, although i think BC could possibly at the NFL level. Are you really suggesting fowler is a starting quality MLB for a 4-3?
Jarhead
I hope your right. I am not high on NT as the HC but was warming up to the idea of Singletary as possible DC. Though he has only coached in the NFL for three years. He was on SF staff last year and Nolan does not seem to think he is ready to be their DC.
Brad
jarhead…why would singletary even interview for a job we all know he’s not getting?
jarhead…why would singletary even interview for a job we all know he’s not getting?
jarhead, those figures include the $7 million bump for this year. I posted that link a couple threads back.
Nothing pleases me more than to see Wahsington mired in the red.
Anybody have any idea if Jerry might wait until Monday to interview Ron Rivera? If I were Jerry I would wait.
biz,
how do we know he’s not getting it?
From what i heard the guy has a presence. If we dont hear anything by tomorrow, i think its still up in the air.
Why would singletary fly to dallas to interview for a HC position if he didnt think the boys were serious? Well, he might be thinking of the future. It is a great experience for him to conduct such an interview. It will set him up for success in the future. As you know, everyone, and i mean everyone, is watching. He may find himself on a couple of short lists next year for a HC position even if he is not hired this year.
SF may decide they want him back and offer him a raise (ala norv turner).
He may just dazzle JJ and get the offer.
JJ may decide to offer him a DC position, which, in a sense, is more responsibility than what he is doing now and a pre-cursor to the ultimate position, HC.
There are several very good reasons to interview for the job, even if you dont think you’re the prime candidate and even if you’re not sure you want it. You dont turn down offers to interview for promotions.
Keystone tom-
If JJ doesn’t wait he’s crazy. Not because I think Rivera is so good. But to not wait a few short days to get a potential ringer that could dominate the league for you, would be a waste when there is no rush/no competition.
I like Singletary…He grew up a Cowboys fan. I am liking the thought of him being HC. But there’s also this thought. If he’s HC, Jason Garrett is OC and Todd Bowles is probably DC. Combined that’s 14 years of coaching experience with 0 years experience at the coordinator level. And its 14 only because Bowles has been a coach for 8 years.
Jarhead-
Aint you supposed to be working?
LOL
The question is, Who else will Singletary work for in the next year or two and how does that team stack up?
SF-Great potential for future with key players in place.
Dallas-Ready to make a run RIGHT NOW!
Other teams with coaches on the bubble:
Oak- Always on the bubble.
SD-Schott retires next year.
AZ-Always on the bubble
GB-If the late run continues he’s good, but I wouldn’t count on it.
Hou-’nuff said
Det- See Arizona
Buf- Can they beat Mia and NE, and NYJ?
So basicaly of all these teams the two that look best to work for (in any capacity) are the one he’s at and the one he just interviewed for.
keystone….norv turner is the next cowboys hc.
In post 12 I left SD out of the quality teams, but that’s because Singletary is one helluva long shot to get that with the coaching talent already in place there.
Biz-
Okay, I’ve gotten use to the idea, but who will be our DC? And please don’t say Bowles. What was the name of that 3-4 guru we were talking about before BP retired?
Interesting fact,
did you know Indy and Chicago are two of the lightest teams in the NFL this year? Lovie Smith cut his 5 heaviest players this off season. As a team they dropped an average of 6 pounds per player. Indy is the number one lightest team.
Dallas is one of the heaviest along with the Jets. Notice anything about possible coaching connections? Just thought it was odd. I believe Houston dropped the most weight per player as a team.
gunner..wasn’t it henning?
jarhead…the reason why i’m asking is i heard on mike and mike that the boy’s had not interviewed a minority and they questioned singletary’s interview.
All things considered I’d rather have Tina Turner as HC. But I’m willing to give Norv the benefit of the doubt. I hope he has a great DC in mind.
gunner..sorry for the mix up henning is an oc.
biz,
say it aint so…mike and mike of ESPN radio are drumming up controversy in realtion to the cowboys!?!?!?!?!?!
According to the NFL VP, the boys met the rooney rule requirement by interviewing bowles. end of story, unless you’re ESPN.
The accusation/implication that singletary was a token interview doesnt wash when you consider that JJ has also talked to bowles, gibbs, and sparano as potential HCs as well as Garrett who he later hired as the OC. An argument can be made that singletary is just as qualified as those guys.
Singletary not being the prime HC candidate does not mean he was a token interview.
just read cameron in miami fired Dan Quinn because he wouldnt sign an extention past 07.He is the D-line coach and I thought someone one the blog said he was amazing and up and coming. The article said he was one of the best D-line coaches in the league.
jarhead…they sais interviewing bowles for hc was pretty much a joke.
I’ve been hearing a lot of noises about Norv T. not being a rah-rah aggressive (ala BP) type of coach.. and he wouldn’t be able to handle TO or the rest of the team…
I am not really in the Norv’s band wagon.. But I’ll refer you to the two coaches currently STILL playing!!! Yes the Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith… They sure don’t fit the monster/aggressive image you would expect the NFL coach should have.. Beside there is not a coach in the league who could handle TO. So let’s forgo this disciplinarian talk and talk about the fact… Is this guy knows his X’s and O’s??? and would he be able to help the maturation of both Romo and JG? If yes, the he’ll do fine.. b/c we all know that Jason G is the future head coach of Dallas Cowboys, perhaps within the next 2-3 years.
biz,
whether its a joke or not, it meets the requirements as stipulated in the rule. the only change is that you cant interview a guy by phone, it must be done face to face.
Other than dennis green and art shell, did they mention any “better” candidates (not counting the ones currently focused on a SB)?
jarhead…i’m on your side on this one.i just thought them trying to make something out of nothing was unfair to the cowboy organization.
Toast,
knowing your Xs and Os is fine, in game planning. Its an integral talent for a HC b/c he sets the game plan and gives guidance to the coordinators and they worry about the details of Xs and Os, unless the HC actually calls plays too.
Strong HCs do more than that on game day though. they make good decisions with little or no time to reflect and consider them.
Take a time out, challenge a play, go for it on 4th, fake a punt, go for 2, and one of the biggest ones in my eyes: make adjustments when your game plan isnt working.
You can either do that or you cant, and you need to be able to do it in such a way as to give all your players and coaches confidence that you’re in control and will make sound decisions, at least more often than not. Nothing crushes a player’s morale more than beleiving that his coach simply doenst know what to do b/c the other team is one step ahead.
This is the area where i think turner will struggle most. he has got to be able to make effective, timely decisions from the sideline, based on what is happening in front of him, not based on what he expected to happen all week in game-planning and preparation.
this is one of the key things that seperates a great coach from an average one and turner has not shown me in the past that he can do it effectively with the outcome hanging in the balance.
biz,
Mike and Mike are probably quoting a story out of S.F. which claimed:
A. that Bowles got only a breezy interview and suggested:
B. that Singletary would only get a breezy interview;
the story named an unidentified source on Bowles interview, though the local press says his interview lasted 3.5 hours.
Who you gonna believe, a Niners-covering team that doesn’t want to lose Singletary and seems very eager to portray Jones in a racist light (He’s only doing this cause he has to) or stories that contradict the basic facts of the first?
We know ESPN will always take the route of highest hype.
biz,
they’re just talking about the cowboys. sure its unfair, but its ESPN. they dont have to support anything they say, they’re just giving the listeners what they want, more cowboys.
JJ probably is eating it all with two spoons.
jarhead and rafy…it’s funny when the hiring of a coach in dallas is bigger than the actual sb.
unless you’re the colts and bears.
jarhead,
Concur.. I am merely pointing out the Hitler/tough/aggrassive type of coaching is not the key for success (see BP). Granted, it is important for a coach to know all the nuisances of the game as you have mentioned… but I put lots of emphasis on the game planning and being able to adjust on the run through the game.
Look out. The Skins have James Thrash’s contract restructured. It’s on now.
I love the idea of Singletary as HC. I have no idea if it will be good or ill, but I like the idea of a super intense no-name being the Cowboys’ coach. He’s a media DARLING among darlings, so he won’t get the same garbage Parcells did about TO and Jerry Jones, and I wonder what TO will do face to face with this man.
Yeah, Singletary as HC will has a lot of cred with the players esp. since he’s a hall of fame player himself
Hard to see Jerry hiring Singletary though. Jerry said he wanted experience since he felt the team was close. If Jerry hire Singletary then the HC will have 4 year coaching exp, while the OC will only have 2 yrs exp.
Just heard that Jerry will wait until after the Super Bowl to name a HC. Makes me wonder now. I figured they would make the announcement today if it was Norv. Maybe they interview the Bears DC or even Urban Meyer. Nothing would surprise me now.
Toast,
I’d agree the yelling and screaming and big motivational speeches is the stuff of movies and is limited in its actual effect.
Give BP some credit, he didnt always take that approach, though he wasnt scared to call a player out.
Gray,
where did you hear it?
we’ve got time, next week wouldn’t throw off any timelines, unless you’re the media.
jarhead -
Heard it on NFL network and ESPN radio.
Unless Jerry’s going to announce today it makes sense that he waits till next week…he’s supposed to be travelling tomorrow to the SB
I think that makes sense even if he doesn’t plan to interview anyone else. If he were to announce anytime between now and Monday that would take away from the SB.
joey2zs,
You think Dale Hansen has either the stones or the synapses to ignore Singletary during a presser, as he did Parcells this summer, look over at Jerry and say, “I’m talking to the *coach* of the Dallas Cowboys.”
Man, I’d pony up for pay-per-view of that aftermath.
Shoot, we could promo it right now.
Coaching/Mediot tag-teams, in the cage. No one leaves conscious. In the former player corner, we’ve got Troy Aikman and Mike Singletary. In the mediot corner, Skip Bayless and Dale Hansen!
Shoot, Jerry could pay off his stadium tomorrow if he staged that one.
I’d love if Singletary was chosen as the coach. He and Garrett are short on the coaching years yes, but the both played for a long time. Singletary seems to have all the intangibles of being able to motivate and inspire players. He should be ble to manage the players, media and Jerry as well as manage games. Im not quite sure about the x’s and o’s, but I guess thats what the coordinators are for.
Raf
BP would be back on the next plane!
I’d pay to see Bayless get his clock cleaned!
The only prob if Jerry waited would be that the some of the assistants the HC might want may sign with other teams.
Rafael,
lets get jim rome in to call singletary “michelle” instead of mike.
Singletary as HC presents some problems, one being managing a game from the sidelines.
A player like Peyton Manning has a lot better chance of doing that than a Mike Singletary. He may be a great motivator, but when things start happening fast(challenges, clock management and adjustments requiring quick decisions), only experience will suffice.
I think he will have some trouble with that aspect for sure, who knows what that will cost in terms of games.
not necesarily rha, he has 10+ years of game experience in the NFL. Plus he’s been a coach for the last 4 years and he’s pretty smart.
BTW, is Singletary supposed to be a bad a$$? I understood him to be very religious, a good motivational speaker and very likeable. I am not sure how this translates into a guy that can scare/intimidate his players like Ditka or Parcells in their prime.
Seems like we are making him to something he is not.
RHA,
ref post 47. that is probably why he has limited X and O duties in SF. He speaks to the team during the week, which attests to his credibility and motivational skill, not to his ability to manage a game effectively from the sideline.
In some cases, strong coordinators can do alot of that for the HC, but the HC still must be able to make KEY decisions in a timely manner (sometimes with limited information) from the sidelines.
Jar,
Yep, I think we are reacting to all the good press after each interview rather than facts. The media is killing me with all the flip flops and good guy one minute and bad guy the next.
I haven’t seen a single objective assessement of these guys in terms of pros and cons. Certainly no one owes me that, but it would be nice since our perception is based only on exposure to media reports.
Who knows what these guys are really like anyway? Garrett is exciting because there are so many different sources touting him, Norv is easier because we know him, but who really knows about the Ryans, Riveras and Singletarys?
Breaking News (well,maybe)
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2749678
Gray,
At one time this could be looked at as pretty accurate. I agree with rafael that mortensen had some contact with BP on the side and a gentlemen’s agreement that BP would give him scoop if mortensen would report only what BP told him.
Whether or not that exists with JJ is another story, BUT, assuming the report is mostly accurate, i say:
Kudos to turner for laying out some stipulations but why would JJ wait? if he had agreed to that and wanted to hire turner, why wait to announce it?
If JJ wants to interview rivera he is not agreeing to turner’s demands to hire his own staff, he is saying it is subject to his approval only.
It could also mean JJ wants to interview others for the HC position or wants more time to make a decision.
Im fine with that too, for now. There is time and no other vacancies for HC positions, thus no other competition.
Whatever it means, there will not be an announcement before the SB.
Thus, the NFL can sigh in relief and people can focus solely on the SB.
Thus, we will not have an answer soon. Actually, it probably will be “soon,”
as in, not in the next 5 days and before “late.”
Speculate away bloggers.
I mean “NO” announcement before the SB.
Rivera is a 4-3 guy. Are we gonna be running the Tampa 2. I am sorry but I think it is the worst defense to run with this team. Roy would have to take a deep half and the middle linebacker needs to be good in coverage to close the middle.
Please talk to the Ryans or hire Phillips.
I do not want to see the TAMPA 2.
If we do run the Tampa 2, I think you have to consider Bobby Carpenter as a middle linebacker candidate as he is the best coverage LB we have. Ayodele can play strong side but what the hell do you do with Bradie James. He is not a LB for the TAMPA 2.
Jerry can now relax on Huizenga’s yacht and drink mint juleps( non- alcoholic of course) and ponder the situation.
Fellas,
Just announced on the DMN that JJ will not announce a new head coach for our boys until after the superbowl, and that possibly he might still conduct further interviews. Also, ESPN reports that Norv Turner is still the favorite, however, he has put stipulations down with JJ. He want to pick his own staff, specifically he wants to hire his own DC. Norv’s choice is Ron Rivera. What a concept!!!
One other thing before i hit the gym.
There appear to have been no “rash” decisions over the new coaches.
Those coaches that they wanted to keep were evidently identified and have been deemed off limits to inquiring teams.
Those coaches that they were willing to lose have moved on or may yet move on.
The only hire JJ has made was garrett and JJ’s hand was forced somewhat in that matter.
The big two HC candidates, turner and phillips, have publicly stated that they dont have a problem with garrett on the staff.
There are still several asst coach spots open with apparently no attempt to fill them yet. This is inconsistent with the theory that JJ wants to hire ALL the coaches.
Where it might get ugly is when a new HC is hired and wants to replace someone on the staff who has been targeted as a “keeper.” OR, if JJ wants to “screen” potential asst coaches before agreeing to let the new HC hire them.
Finally, i think any new HC will have to accept the scouting department as is. I doubt many bloggers would have a serious problem with that.
donnyposner,
Actually we have excellent personell to run the Tampa 2 defense. The key is having strong athletic Defensive Tackles who can rush the passer.
Spears/Coleman/Canty/Ferg/Ratliff
All the guys above fit the type of DT’s you need to run the Tampa 2.
Hatcher, Ellis, and Ware at DE would be good. It would be nice to add a couple more via the draft and FA if possible.
Our LB’s, Burnett, Bradie, Ayodele and Carpenter all have the required speed to excell in the defense.
Our personell would do quite well in the Tampa 2. BP and company did a good job at drafting guys who are very versitale in what they can play.
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6428288?MSNHPHMA
Cash-
I completely disagree.
Roy Williams and Bradie James are not Tampa 2 guys.
I can agree with the rest.
Also, you waste Terrence Newman’s ability to cover man on man.
You dont need as good of Cb’s in the Tampa 2 but need good coverage Safeties
Cash-
And if we were truly going to run the TAMPA 2, we probably would have drafted different guys. I am rather certain of that.
Cash,
Wow, this team does have the personnel to run that Tampa 2 defense.
There’s only one glitch.
Would you really trust James or Ayodele (which ever one were to be the middle linebacker) to drop back in coverage and man the middle part of the field?
Both are great players in my mind but that requirement may be stretching them a bit.
However, there is still that possibility of Carpenter playing in the middle. And since we all know Carpenter has been at the least adequate in coverage, he would fit right in that spot.
Whether or not that would work, one main aspect of this defense is they are very versatile as far as schemes go.
A cover two defense doesn’t exactly need great safeties.
As long as the corners are able to handle the receivers well enough for the safeties to cover the top is all the seems to be the matter.
Think about Tampa’s safeties. Or even Indianapolis’.
Neither are that personally great in coverage, but they get the job done.
At least we know Jerry did not rush this decision. I think he is doing the right thing by taking his time. You would think if he was 100% sold on Norv that a decision would have been made by now. Maybe Rivera can bring Wade Wilson with him? I am also pleased that it looks like we are really considering switching back to the 4-3.
I think if you move Henry to FS and can get a decent corner opposite Newman we would be in good shape. I think it also puts Roy (#31) in better positions to make plays (I want to see more of #31 on jacked-up). I also think our DL will benefit from switching back to 4-3. I worry a little about James at MLB but he will not have as much coverage responsibility as compared to the 3-4. I am sure Greg Ellis is smiling if this is true.
Just read the aricle about Rivera’s contract being up after the Super Bowl…I wonder if there are other Chicago coaches whoose contracts also expire…Anyone know?
Gray,
I too worry about James in the middle of the 4-3.
James’ has only played outside in the 4-3 whether it was in Dallas or at LSU.
I’m sure he’s played it sometime in his career but not in the past 6 years at least.
However James has really matured a lot since, so I’ll still be optimistic if he is put in that spot.
gray…how’s asante and newman with roy, henry.does that sound about right?
It must be hell being a Cowboy hater right now; especially those that are Bears or Colts fans. They’re all wondering, and p***ed off that the Cowboys are getting so much press.
rha
Just because somebody is a Christian, doesn’t mean he’s a milk toast. While he’s motivating his players, what difference does it make whether or not he has a smile on his face? There are many Christians on the field who play like “devil dogs” and coaches who know how to intimidate. They’re professionals who know what it takes to get the job done.
Jarhead
I don’t think there will be any problem with an HC who wants to get rid of someone JJ wants to keep. If JJ wants him… he stays. Jones will have final say.
Joker - I thought we were playing a lot of cover 2 towards the latter half of the season? I think part of the problem was our coverage schemes were very vanilla - thus it was easy for O’s to figure out how to isolate and expose our safeties. Zimmer has aluded to the fact that he was “not allowed” to run complex coverages or complex blitzes. Seems strange to me when unpredictability is supposed to be one of the primary benefits of the 3-4.
Hence the need for a 3-4 guru. We should have the capability to compete for a SB NOW - if we switch schemes we run the huge risk of throwing another season away.
Thats why I prefer Philips (and/or interviewing 1 or both of the Ryans). Sounds like he is out of the picture though.
If its Turner then hopefully its 3rd time’s a charm. The article mentions he want Rivera as DC - how would that be possible - its lateral? Or is he out of contract?
joker.
I’m thinking about Tampa’s safeties and I see John Lynch in his prime. I’m thinking about Indy’s and I see Bob Sanders. I’m thinking Chicago and I see Mike Brown.
Those are three darn good safeties.
John Lynch? Bob Sanders?
Uh, those guys are known for their hits, not exactly their coverage ability.
joker16 and gray,
I share your doubts about James in a Tampa-2 and it has nothing to do with effort. To play MLB in that scheme you’ve got to be fast in coverage and able to turn and run with TEs and RBs down the deep seam.
Think back to the Seattle game. Remember James flailing trying to keep pace with Jerramy Stevens? Or in the Detroit game, where Jon Kitna was laughing at him for not knowing where to be?
The man has advanced D.D. Lewis disease and I don’t know if he’s got the antidote.
joker,
True, but those schemes don’t give up big plays. I think your general point is right that Dallas wouldn’t need a great FS to make it fly, but you could say the same thing about their 3-4.
Their problem is lacking even a league-average one.
Yeah I gotcha.
Damn, after all this hopefully Dallas will realize to finally get a FS decent enough to handle a system based to help them
I first brought up the idea that Carpenter is better suited in the middle than James is in the Tampa 2.
The CB’s let the Wr’s go after they pass their zone area to the Safeties.
So, we are going to have some serious coverage problems. Problems that we’ve seen This year.
The middle should be open and the entire deep (left, right, and middle deep)
IMO, a good Tampa 2 requires a fast MLB with good coverage skills and 2 good coverage Safeties.
Even though our Defensive line should be able to play the Tampa 2 relatively well, It wasn’t built for it. Ware is perfect but Canty and Spears were not chosen with the TAMPA 2 in mind. I cant remember who was on the board but we may have chosen differently.
For those of you who, like me, didn’t know what a Tampa 2 is, check out
