What does a DC do when the head coach runs the Defense?
from what I’ve read, Stewart will call the plays for defense.
Didn’t Phillips say he would call the plays on Defense at his presser?
wade is probably calling the plays, but regardless it can never hurt to have a DC on your side who knows the same system very well.
When you’re the HC and primarily involved with the D or the O, you have the DC or OC to blame when all doesn’t work. LOL
while the HC may be very involved in the defense, there is no way he can give it as much time as someone who is dedicated. The fact that they’ve worked together in the past and have the same understanding of the system will allow Wade to delegate the day-to-day stuff and still call the plays. This seems like a great hire.
I think he will also be responsible for “coaching the coaches” on the Phillips 34 as they move away from the Cover 2 into more Cover 1’s and zone blitz packages. That isn’t something we have done in awhile.
I’m happy to finally have Stewart.
Does anyone know anything about Kacy Rodgers, our current Dline coach? I kinda expected this guy to be replaced.
The more people we have that have coach in WP system the quicker and shorter the learning curve. I think everyone should still be patient the first half of the season as it wont be instant transition. Pressure should increase very quickly but expect to see blown assignments too.
Speaking of family ties
I would not mind grabbing
Steve DeOssie’s boy Zak, a 6-4 1/2, 250-pound linebacker and long-snapper from Brown
he seems to be a good LB and if he can long snap we can save a spot on the team for someone else.
Im teaching my 7 yr old and 4 yr old to long snap. Washingtons long snapper made a cool million last year. Now that is almost as good a job as a backup QB behind Brett Farve.
haha..
Ya long snapping is something that’s hard to learn but if you can do it you can get a spot on a team. I’m getting myself better at it and hoping to walk on at Boise State next semester as a LS/FB/DE/LB/ST Ace. I do it all.
While Wade may be calling some defensive plays on gameday, there’s no way a head coach can dedicate the amount of time to game-planning and film review during the week that a coordinator can, as was mentioned above. Bill Parcells called a large percentage of the defensive plays early in his Giants tenure, but I don’t think anyone would argue that Belichik did not leave a significant imprint on that defense and the way it approached the game each Sunday.
CNM, good luck and when you make travel squad and then play give me your number so I can look out for you. I know this will take time but will be worth it as Boise should be going to bowls for a while.
Squidlo,
Will do my friend.
seriously though
Zak Deossie would be a nice mid to late round draft prospect as a backup ILB and starting Long snapper allowing us to cut our current LS who cant do anything else.
Donny, I thought bradie james was our back up LB.LOL He seems he would be an interesting pick. Has the roots in football and probably went to Brown because Brains is a better long term investment than pinning your hopes on football. Does he want to play and hows his speed and any word on his instincts.
CNM, One more thing, do you have any plans to go into coaching. With that head coach you might want to try for QB. The things you could learn spending 5 years with him would put you on a coaching fast track. Marty Schottemhiemer sent his son to Florida not so he could play but to learn from Steve Spurrier. Just something I heard about that was to late for me. I would probably do something like that if I was 18 again.
DeOssie ran a 4.62 which is a great time for a guy that big. I bet he is faster than BJames who I’d like to trade away for a 7th round pick just to get his salary gone
Donnie, If BP were still here I bet it would be a no brainer drafting him. To me LB is about a little speed and alot of instincts. Zach Thomas and Dat come to mind when I look for a LB. Oh and Sam Mills.
Squid,
I’d love to play QB, but I haven’t played it since my freshman year in HS. I’m a freshman in college now, I’m 6′2″ 261, not sure if I’m even tall enough…in any case, I definitely would like to coach some day.
Dat went toward the play like he was Singletary and hit like he was Butkus. An “undersized” MLB who made up for it all with pure heart. That’s why I like him back to perhaps instill that kind of attitude in our linebacker corps.
CNMDallasfan…
Not all coaches came up the ranks as QBs. Tony Dungy, Bill Cowher, Art Schell, etc. made their way through other lines of play. If you set your mind to be a coach, then learn to be a coach and be a good one. In all my life, I’ve learned that you can always learn something from just about everyone…even if it is what not to do. Best of luck on your journey!
Shovelin’ along…
For those of you interested in the nuances of “free agency”, check out the following link:

It is interesting.
Digger your right about that but if your giving an opportunity or better yet able to take an opportunity of studying under a great offensive or defensive mind you should jump hard and fast. The head coach up there is known as a offensive whiz and great play caller(see fiesta bowl and ask OK). I would do any thing I could to spend alot of time with him. Watch film with him, find some extra headphones and listen to him call plays and talk strategy. Make friends with the guy who hooks up the head phones and get an extra set. Tell the coach your long term goals and what your interested in and he may find a way or put you with another coach on his staff that he likes with you for extra film study. Hard work and taking chances opens up doors.Remember also if he likes you and you impress him it could be your first job when you get out. Even if you end up on the defensive side of the ball.
Digger, do you follow the saints at all. I live here and was forced to watch and listen to all their games for years before the internet. They became my second team even though they are in the NFC. It has never been a problem before because they seem to be good only when Cowboys were bad so no conflict until this year. One of the things i like about this site is alot of guys are from different NFL cities and seemed to know things that get missed by the big boys(espn ect). Some good insightful tips that help pick games.
Guys…I saw a little something about the Steelers maybe cutting ties with Joey Porter. Is he someone that would fit in Wade’s defense? I have always liked watching him play.
Squidlo97…
Don’t really follow the Saints too much. Did last year since they did so well. Actually, I found the link on DallasCowboys.com in the “roller” beneath the lead story. Thought the info was interesting and just had to share it with everyone.
It’s interesting that the rumor mill has us going after Davis, with little mention of Dielman or Steinbach.
From ESPN:
The Cowboys could emerge as the lead team for Cardinals left tackle Leonard Davis. The Cardinals decided not to franchise Davis and will let him hit the market. The 49ers and Cowboys are expected to be the teams that are the most interested and many feel the Cowboys will be the winner.
I know a few have been dogging Davis, but he’s been a LT for the last couple of years, but has played all four line positions.
Guard or Tackle on the right side, with his size and talent, would be an upgrade of either Rivera or Colombo.
Can’t see Porter getting free, If he does that will impact Thomas and Kearney to some extent.
Davis would represent some flexibility b/c of his ability to play tackle or guard, he has also publicly stated interest in playing for the boys apparently.
He is 29 at the start of the season though.
What a great coaching staff we’ve got. We should make the playoffs next year with a Top 10 offense and defense.
Yeah Mcallen_fan, that all world coaching staff worked wonders for the Skins…
alantdot,
im not ready to call all of our problems solved over the new coaching staff, but our approach to filling out the coaching staff has been radically different than that of the skins.
jarhead…
You hit it…it’s a different approach. Can WP turn it on and get the thrust we need to launch the ‘Boys into the SB? We’ll see.
As much as I respected BP, I often was frustrated at some of the play calling…a 5 yd flair pass or run over tackle on 3rd down when 15 were needed. Sure, sometimes it works. However, it became a pattern and opposing teams were watching for it every time as the first read.
New “blood” in the play calling should remedy this predictability and create confusion in opposing Ds instead of seeing confusion in our D. It’s great to have stats on tendencies. Yet, a tendency anticipated without contingency usually gets to be the wrong choice.
JMO…
I want the coming season to be successful as well, but we need to be realistic here.
New Blood can come up crap also.
Just noticed that the Rams cut Timmerman (RG). B4 everyone gets their panties in a knot, I know he’s got lots of mileage, is 35 y/o, and probably doesn’t have that step that he once had. However, he might just be what the doctor ordered as a tactical solution to Rivera until we can develop a young stud to fill the RG spot. Certainly his experience would benefit the development of a newbie.
Besides, he’ll probably be inexpensive and a decent value.
I’m not sure I would put much stock in the free agency rumors at this point. I’m pretty sure it is illegal for any team to be talking to a player before March 1st. So there is just as much liklihood that the rumor of a team willing to give Davis an $11M signing bonus came from his agent, rather than a team.
Ah, but alanTdot…
The “old blood” was not getting it done. It’s time something different should be approached and implemented. Wouldn’t you agree?
Man, I get tired of seeing the Saints.
I live in the town Emmitt was from, so from 92 til Ditka, I got pretty much all the Dallas games.
But from Ditka-now, it’s been all Saints. Fortunatly, the Cowboys were a national game like 10 times this year.
I think I had to sportsbar about 3 or 4 games this year (Houston, Tenn, Arizona, Detroit)
Someone one said Stewart would “coach the coaches” and that’s exactly what I was intending to say.
As far as replacing James with a mid-round talent from Brown? That’s asking for disaster.
(of course, I haven’t given up on Brady yet - I’m still hoping to have a defense called “The James Gang.” )
I don’t know digger. i think we were a missed hold from shocking the Bears and then the Saints.
Well, folks…if the rumor mill is correct, Davis is not going to be an option for us. It seems that he has ties w/ SF coaching staff. Namely, the coach responsible for acquiring him and tutoring him at AZ. Oh well, back to the wishing well.
alanTdot…
Perhaps you’re correct…then again, from all the analyses of the Seattle game, it should have never come down to the need for that FG in the first place. Let’s all face up to it…the ‘Boys, as a team, stumbled and fell from grace on that day.
I think they stumbled, but fell from grace is a little strong.
I think that day, everyone from Jerry to Bill to me to you remembered what winning feels like. And that losing sucks so much worse when you expect to win with something on the line.
But there’s a saying, you gotta learn to lose before you learn to win.
I hope that the last quarter of the season was the “Learning to Lose” for the 40 or so guys who’ll be back next year.
I’m with you Adam Mc!
Hey just got in and missed alot.
Damn those niners and their cap space. i like te addition to the staff. Wade can’t do it all and have an experienced second is what makes a franchise. Sad to say look at NE, they are losing assistants for a reason. I just hope Bowles teaches Watkins to stay in his backpedal and keep his head on a swivel.
I don’t want to interrupt the thread but if anyone wants to talk draft or free agency we can move to a earlier post or conitnue hear if that’s cool.
Sorry forgot to check my spelling. Watching basketball, wine and typing don’t mix.
stumbled, and fell, i dont quite think so
Dallas will draft a DE/LB in round 1. Anthony Spencer would be my guess at this time. I then think we will draft either CB/FS in round 2 and then look for OL help in rounds 3-4. If we sign Antwan Peek this could change things but I heard Miami will also go after Peek (Capers coached him in Houston)
Hate to change the subject but I feel that the player that will benefit most from BP’s departure is Julius Jones. I think BP corraled some of JJ’s talent by making him run a certain way which made him run into the backs of his o-line.
I think that WP will say to JJ, just do your thing and than we will see JJ of his rookie year lighting things up.
And I dont think we spend another 1st on a front seven player unless he is a cant miss NT. We go CB/FS or o-line guaranteed.
Adam-
I didnt suggest replacing James with DeOssie.
I suggested replacing him with Carpenter with DeOssie as the back up.
I am oly half joking. I like DeOssie as a mid to late round pick due to his ability to long snap saving a roster spot with someone who can do something else.
The Cowboys have spoken to Anthony Spencer, Charles Johnson, and Dan Bazuin plus the Antwan Peek rumor so this may be a sign that they may move Carpenter inside.
The other possibility is that they are simply doing their homework.
When their is smoke there is sometimes fire.
I think ryanA my be right. If Anthony Spencer is there, I think we may take him. He may not be there however.
Looking over the Lb’s combine performances, I see a lot of quality LB’s this year both Inside and Out.
I’m going on record to say that this will be a great year for LB’s.
Brian Robison posted some great numbers and has been a good player as well. He could also fit the SOLB position.
I am surprised by guys like Deossie who will move up the draft and Tim Shaw, David Harris, and many others.
Due to the talent at that position, it may be hard not to take one. Its just where a lot of talent is in this draft.
I wouldn’t mind seeing ‘04 JJ back again, that’s for sure. ‘04 JJ + MBIII = best backfield in the league I think. The things that were keeping ‘04 JJ from coming back were one or more of the following…
1) He lost some agility after the high ankle sprain.
2) BP got into his head with the ball security thing.
3) Our blocking was SOOO much better in 05 and 06 that JJ made nary a cut…and didn’t have to.
Hopefully it’s #2. I know I say this a lot but JJ made my jaw drop that season with his cuts. He was kind of like a less powerful LT or something…or a less dazzling Barry Sanders.
I think JJ will have a better season.
I do think that there may be some relevance to BP over coaching his backs. Parcells even said something about telling JJ that he did not always have to follow the play…problem is, he already spent a couple years teaching him to do nothing else.
The biggest factor will be the Oline though.
The BP factor will be small IMO
Don’t we have enough LB’s to warrant not taking one in Round 1? Ware is great, Carpenter seems very good, and if we have him on the edges with Ware and Ellis rotating in, I think we’ll have a damn good OLB pass rush. Ayodele is good, but not great, and James is average or something. Hopefully Wade Phillips or Nguyen can get him playing better. I’m hopeful that Dat can get to him…BJames’ best year did come when Dat was still on the team, remember?
And if one out of Spears, Canty, Hatcher, or Ratliff can be a consistent pass rusher under WP’s system, we have a damn good pass rush overall, people.
Round 1, I’d pick FS or CB if Henry does move to FS. Personally, I might actually prefer CB, so if Watkins improves, he can take the reigns from Henry. Moving to FS could also mean a longer career for Henry so he might not mind. If no one good is left and there’s no one worth reaching for, pick OL.
I’d pick Jarrett if he was available though. Great hands and athleticism. Only problems are that he seems arrogant and based on some quotes I’ve seen, he seems really dumb too.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=R_aByLgotfY
Look at the hit Jarrett takes near the middle of the video during a TD catch. Think Ted Ginn Jr could do that? Too bad that guy who signed with the Cubs decided to play baseball instead of being a WR, cause then we’d have even more choices.
And if he’s slow…that means the Michigan safeties must be REALLY slow.
I wonder if Phillips will continue to expand on Terence Newman’s innovative “bum deflections†from this year or if he will want him to revert to more traditional cornerback methods like turning, looking for the ball and trying to make a play with your hands and not your arse?
Bval77,
I agree on Julius, I think he might get more carries next year too. At least I think they will be distributed at more even keels throughout the game i.e. Julius will get more carries/drives/series around the endzone and in the forth quarter.
Donny;
“I’m going on record to say…â€Â
Is this a Congressional hearing?
Wow, you’re really taking this serious aren’t you.
PLEASE quit the LB talk.
We have our last two drafts to re-stock the position in Burnett (2nd round) and Carpenter (1st).
James just got a huge signing bonus that would be accelerated in any trade or if he’s cut.
Ellis is still coming back.
JJ just made it very clear what he plans to do in a Star-Telegram article:
- He said the Boys would be cautious
- He want value
- He wants big time talent, if available.
From FST:
“We’re in a position where if we get an outstanding player anywhere, we ought to take him because they’re hard to get,” Jones said.
He said the team must improve the offensive line, but he believes they can accomplish those goals from within.
It goes on to say this draft is all about offense, unless huge value drops to us.
That means Dielman/Steinbach/Davis are options in FA.
OL is a serious draft priority.
WR is a possibility.
But the fact is that every hole can be filled from within:
FS - Watkins
RG - Proctor
RT - Colombo or “That”
ILB - Carpenter
OLB - Burnett/Carpenter/Ellis
NT - MountTavious
You’ve got to let your young guys play. Don’t forget, year 3 is huge for all young players and most of ours are entering that phase.
Should be a good training camp.
b lee,
The Michigan safeties are really slow and Ted Ginn would probably not need to do what Jarrett needs to do. Ginn would be 20 yards down field.
That said, I think Jarrett is getting unfairly lumped with Mike Williams’ bustness. Jarrett plays a lot faster and quicker, accellerates quickly, runs actual pass routes, etc. I like him. Don’t see why he’s dropping.
It’ll be interesting to see what he runs at USC’s Pro Day. I think it will be better than expected.
That? lol. It took me a couple seconds to realize who you were speaking about Fighter.
I agree with your premise. Honestly, if we just sign Columbo, McBriar, and even Crayton, we’ll have not lost anything from the 2006 team (except Parcells…and that might be a big loss).
Get one quality starter from the draft and a couple more immediate contributors from the other 9 picks and we’re in good shape.
Yeah, we need a backup QB and someone to develop at NT. We need depth at OLB and could use another DB. Everyone sees a big opening at Right Guard, but we don’t need a $7 million / yr Right Guard. Just get someone who isn’t getting pushed back into the pocket every play. Maybe it’s someone on the team.
Assuming T.O. comes back 100%, with Romo playing from Game 1 and a more sack hungry defense…I like our chances for a Super Bowl appearance.
Luke-
“going on record” translates to
Im wrong, everyone can give me @#$%
If I’m right, I can gloat and say I told you so.
Sam-
“Just get someone who isnt getting pushed back into the pocket every play”
so Rivera is fine with you if he comes back from injury?
I’ll bet te Cowboys will not draft either Ginn nor Jarrett.
The stakes- my girlfriend.
Fighter
If Dallas has no interest in LB’s (you may be right)
then why have they talked to 3 during the combine.
Anthony Spencer
Charles Johnson
Dan Bazuin
If you really have no interest why waste your time?
Donny -
Oops. I read too much into your James comments.
I’ll go on the record, mark it down.
The Cowboys will continue their 4 decade long history of discrimination. They will NOT draft a woman in the ENTIRE draft.
Donny,
“I’ll bet the Cowboys will not draft either Ginn nor Jarrett.
The stakes- my girlfriendâ€Â
ROFLMAO
I’m a gambling man, I’d take that bet but unfortunately I agree with your premise, so anyway… what’s she look like? LOL
Adam McCloskey,
LOL, you and donny are cracking me up here…
The Cowboys talk to nearly every player. EVERY team talks to nearly every player. Even the Skins. That’s what scouts do. How do you expect them to construct their draft board? Guessing like we do?
Bazuin is depth at OLB. Cowboys need OLB depth. Depth is important. Johnson and Spencer are first round prospects currently slotted to go around where we are drafting. Don’t you think it would be good to talk to those players? Maybe hear what teams are interested in them? Maybe interested in trading up for them?
Information gathering is not a waste of time. In every other meeting with a player, a team will be going through the agent and trying to read between an agent’s lines. Talking to player x at the Senior Bowl or the combine allows a team to get straight information without the agent involved.
Adam,
Hold on… what about that offensive tackle from a couple of years back, what was her name, Jessie Rodgers…
Donny,
Rivera is not fine with me. I’m fine with him as depth, but he is who I refer to as getting pushed back into the pocket “on every play.” Of course, I was over stating. But he’s a liability when healthy so of course I don’t want him coming off another back injury.
And I don’t really care if KC Joyner says differently.
MASON CROSBY IN 07 AS OUR KICKER, ILL BET DONNY’S GIRLFRIEND
(SORRY IF THIS APPEARS TWICE, I HAD ENTERED MORE TEXT, BUT NOTHING APPEARED)
Do you think the Cowboys will sign Leonard Davis? He is 28 and just plain huge.
What about trying to move Hatcher to ROLB, he seems somewhat similar to ellis he is younger and more athletic as well, what do you guys think plus he is bigger than Carpenter hence will be able to handle the run better, move carpenter to the middle replace James due to lack of speed and Coverage skills, I have not given up on James but when the Detroit Quarterback plain calls him out as the biggest weekness in coverage something needs to be changed, I hope Wade can put them in situations to succeed, but seemed like the way it came down last year was very bad intermediate and deep coverage. causeing conservative scheme calling hence no pressure, Hatcher OLB, what do you all think
Luke - while Rogers was a sissy, Pat Summitt looks more like a woman than he did.
Hatcher to replace Ware? Are you nuts!
We’ve got a buttload of OLBs:
- Ellis
- Ware
- Carpenter
- Burnett
The rags have us bringing back Glymph and Singleton.
Now inside we’ve got Starters - James & Ayodele locked up to long term contracts.
Backups are light, but Carpenter, Fowler and Hoyte are adequate.
I could see a case of getting ILB (Jack or Mike) help, but not a first rounder.
tony,
ROLB is ware’s position.
Jason Hatcher weighs over 290 pounds. He’s no linebacker.
ESPN reported the Dolphins will release Joey Harrington. I mentioned it before.. I could see Jerry Jones making a run at him for backup QB.
DonnieP, I think you’re right about the LBs in this draft. The more LBs are taken in front of us the better. It may work out that our coveted FS will fall to us.
I’ve lost track of Mayock’s opinions but sometimes I think he’s projecting eighty guys to go in the first round. I always wonder what Vermeil ‘really’ thinks about some of Mayock’s and Dukes’ opinions and statements. It’s one thing to have a clip full of opinions, and quite another to pull the trigger and live with the aftermath. Mayock and Dukes are all opinion and no responsibility. Vermeil is the real deal.
Cowboyman,
you’ve just successfully explained the definition of an “expert:”
someone who doens’t have to live with the consequences of their decisions.
Anybody see JJ’s comments on FA. Music to my ears. He’s thrown so much money down that rat hole he’s not going to be a big player this year. At least he can learn from past mistakes. I hate free agency. I’m glad JJ isn’t all that hyped on it.
“Brian Robison posted some great numbers and has been a good player as well. He could also fit the SOLB position.”
His combine numbers were great across the board. Prior to the combine he was a second day afterthought, where will he go now?
SEM,
go to the DMN blog and check out some of their list of the best FA acquisitions the cowboys have made. Some of the names might surprise you.
In recent times, I might add guys like la’roi glover and rocket ismael. they didnt win SBs, but i would argue that they were solid FA acquisitions.
“Everyone sees a big opening at Right Guard, but we don’t need a $7 million / yr Right Guard. Just get someone who isn’t getting pushed back into the pocket every play”
Did Leonard David ever get pushed back?
Well, as a tackle they ran around him alot
Would rather sign a $14 million guard, than be subjected to these abysmal and unispiring posts by a kid named Joon. I’ve forgotten more about Cowboys football than this adolescent has proven to know. Quite a drop off in authorship for this comprehensive Blog.
Being correct is the 3rd thing I consider when putting together an opinion for my radio show.
1. Be Compelling
2. Have a basis
3. Be correct
Howard Stern called himself the King of All Media. And soon, someone else did, then it’s his name.
In the media, you shape the opinion of you.
I mean, half the time it’s a crap shoot. All of the facts led people to believe Indy would be Dallas last year.
They didn’t.
I pointed it as the cowboys having the Romomentum, indy failing against the 3-4, and an inability to stop the run that would kill them.
Then I was right.
I said it was cause the ‘Boys would run wild, but there weren’t 200 yards on the ground.
So I had a compelling choice, I had reasons, and then I turned out correct.
But if I ended up wrong, it wouldn’t have invalidated my analysis.
Another way - I control the first 2, but the opinions being “correct” is out of my hands. I’m going to focus on the things I can affect.
so after talking to my coworker, a skins fan; they are gonna drop Springs instead of paying his six mil this year. Watch them go out and sign clements though for like 8 mil signing and five mil a year….doesnt make sense to me…
DO YOU GUYS THINK WE COULD PICK UP MIKE DOSS OR MICHAEL LEWIS FOR A CHEAP DOLLAR….?
REGGIE NEILSON RAN A SLOW 40, (4.53)
Surrounded,
I heard the same thing from a skins fan here- drop Springs pick up Clements and find the money somewhere. I thought the Titans had Clements locked up. They certianly have more room to move.
surrounded by skins,
Lewis plays SS. Dallas already has Williams, Parrish and Elam there. Why add a 4th?
Doss missed this year with injury and was so-so before that. Dallas isn’t going to play cover-2 this year unless they fail to get a good FS.
Who cares about 40 times? If Nelson ran a 4.6, yes, I would be concerned, but 4.53 is no big deal.
You’re drafting football players, not track men. If the time doesn’t raise red flags, go off his game tapes.
true….i didnt know if those players could play free safety….no i am excited about neilson….other teams may let him fall back now.
Funny stuff this morning.
No not replace Ware man sorry, I meant to replace Ellis, he weighs 270 Hatcher 295 I realize thats a big difference but I bet you Hatcher not only has a better 40 time but has a better shuttle and would do better in coverage, not much but he has the tools, REPLACE WARE, HA, I meant LOLB SORRY
You’re really making an ass out of yourself tomwillis. I love dogging interns.
If you could have one FA, other than backup QB, who would it be?
Clements
Davis
Dielman
Steinbach
Babineaux/Hamlin
Seems the rumors have us after Davis. No other FA excites.
Now, given an unlimited budget, I’d say Clements, Steinbach, and Davis.
That would solidify the line and DB spots and then the draft would be BPA x 10 (the number of picks)
However, I think we get one. So who’s your daddy?
4.53 SLOW, have you ever run the 40, and how many current FS do you think are blazing faster than that i guarantee 50 percent are slower than that and I bet Roy runs slower than that!
JUSTIN BERY-O FOR PRESIDENT HE RAN A 4.2, HA JK JK
tomwillis,
what has Joon ever done to you? I think the KKK has a blog you might enjoy.
Tony,
Very true about the safeties.
I wonder if fast safeties are going to become almost non-existant?
If a safety runs near a 4.3 then he’ll most likely get moved to cornerback. Those who still run that fast and stay at safety will bulk up to where they won’t run it that fast anymore.
40 time is important for DBs. 4.5 is okay for a safety, the real question is can he cover, does he react to the ball, how is he against the run, can he deliver the big hit and (Roy listen up) does he wrap up?
I was trying to think of a pure offensive draft and this is what I came up with, tell me what you think.
Round 1: trade down late first pick early 2nd Pick Joe Staley/Tony Ugoh
Round 2 or second pick:Crosby K from Colorado may even be able to trade down again and get him
Round 3: Trade up and pick Wr Steve Smith USC (he ran 4.40 40 2 twice)he has great hands he cates everyhing
You know I’ve been wondering what else were going to miss from Parcells.
A lot of the things I won’t miss such as his conservative game plans.
However, after hearing about another Pac-Man Jones misdemeanor for like the 100th time I realized one major aspect were going to miss from The Tuna is his security blanket he had over his players.
When Switzer and Campo were here Dallas’ players were always hanging out with the wrong scene.
When Parcells was here, with the exception of Keith Davis, he had the players, well let’s just say he had them by their hangings.
Now, we just have to hope Phillips can hold them in check as well.
B2SB,
We are NOT taking a kicker in the second round.
JJ seems happy with our Wide Outs, I don’t think we take one before round 4.
I’ve been thinking about that Crosby kid myself as my “surprise” third round pick.
Guess it’s not much of a surprise. He’d be great in the third.
Assuming we trade down, and get 2 seconds and 2 thirds, a combo of S/CB, OG, OT, and K would be pretty solid. Add a WR and we’re set.
Nevertheless, it’s stupid to talk draft that’s 7 weeks away when FA starts Friday.
Who’s your daddy?
ok, Tonyincc, it was just a broad statement, i was not implying that that 40 time was slow as in a negative, i was getting at it doesnt compare to landry whom everyone puts his name with. Landry ran a 4.35. Ill make sure i go over all points in full next time for those who can not follow topics throughout threads.
B-
I totally agree that we take crosby and i am stoked to see someone else seeing the Kicker as a huge need.
Im not sure how much JJ is happy with his recievers. Are you implying that just because he hasnt publically said “hey my two top recievers are old and getting hurt alot, we need a reciever.” that he is satisfied and wont get a good wr when one is there?
I heard something on a talk show today I have been thinking when I’ve heard all the incredible 40 times at the combine…..that they may not be accurate. I’m sure it happens every year but apparently they’re so out of wack this year that a track coach commented how most of the best sprinters couldn’t run the 40’s like some of these guys are. Has anyone else heard anything like that?
and tony, no neve got timed in the 40, but ill race you.
we can go for distance and ill give you a head start
Man im going to stop posting, being around all these skin fans at work kills me; then i find myself venting on here…sorry guys…
fans at work here
Dallas: ME
Redskins: 13
Eagles: 2
Giants: 3
Raiders: 1, poor guy
Patriots: 1
Chargers: 1
and to top it off, i work for the biggest transportation company around here, i book vehicles and speak to skins all the time.
How about T Ginn in the first and Crosby in the second..combined with Mcbriar we would have the best scoring ST’s,
SURROUNDED BY SKINS(YOUR NAME SOUNDS LIKE THE THE CLOSEST THING TO HELL)
I Was not trying to impose on you but I did just have ACL reconstruction but when you say you want to race me in the 40 then say race for distance youll give me a head start, does that mean a long 40 yard dash, doesnt make sense, ha, anyway distance, please thats the only thing I can do, I guess the fastest 40 i ever ran was 4.74, so I guess when I hear 4.5ish called slow im a little astonishes me, anyway enough of this Your point is taken Landry would be nice I agree.
However, I quite frankly am tired of that spot being unsure, and with a rookie no matter how blue chip, it still is unsure at best, so FA, lets get clements move henry and worry about backing up our lineman, and MOVING HATCHER, JK!
i just dont think ginn is that great…
Im sure this is going to be slammed
1st: trade down for another secon and a third
2nd A: Blaylock
2nd B: Crosby K Colorado
3rd A: Drew Stanton QB Mich State right? or maybe get the houston QB later
3rd B: Steve Smith WR USC
4th -7th line work or BPA
Jason Snelling in one of the later rounds woudl be good too
OK, eat it up boys
Of the two top safeties, LaRon Landry cemented his status as the top guy by running faster than all other safeties, even after bulking up to 215lbs.
Reggie Nelson may have hurt himself a little - maybe enough to be available at the 22nd pick.
Tony, i meant like the mile..haha…Virginia State champ here and scholarship athlete…haha…anyways
I get worried about the draft as well, that is why i am saying grab the kicker and move on….a kicker with that talent is more likely to work out than a lineman unless he is just straight awesome.
Shoot if i were doing the work here, i woudl trade the first for a first and something next year, then next year we trade both first round picks to move way up and get a great player, like a calvin johnson or something.
and yes, with this name, it is true…im in hell
Sportintg News has us taking
1. Blaylock
2. Griffin
3. Hill Wr form Washington State
They also have Brady Quinn going 26th to KC!! Holy crap that is going to be a bummer for that kid!
I cant see him falling that far, i still think minnosota takes him if he falls
I just read an article that has the breakdown on Gurodes deal has that already been posted or is anyone interested in me posting it.
I also heard levi brown hurt his stock by running a 5.4 40 maybe he can fall to us. I would take him or nelson or landry, if we decide to take FS.I still think drafting a corner first helps short term and long term the best. Anyone know how Aaron Ross ran and even houston.
Guys get over-analyzed. Remember the word on leinhart last year, the guy isnt into it, just a partier, yada yada yada.
he fell to 10. i dont think quinn will fall that far, but you never know. if he does, he’ll play with a chip on his shoulder.
Not a bad situation for him to be in at KC where Green is on the way out at 37.
Levi Brown is project on SN as going to the Raiders in Rd 2.
Miami supposively really likes Quinn. I wouldnt mind falling to KC at all. Green is 37 and with maybe 2 years left the young QB doesnt get thrown to the dogs. He also doesnt have to wait forever. 1 of the more stable franchises as well. I hope everyone is ready because we at the time of year were evryone has been overrated and everyone starts falling. We will hear of nothing but bad things and good players will suddenly become products of a good system. I dislike this time of the draft process until a week before the draft when suddenly everyone is good again.
with all those picks i wouldnt mind trading up to get landry. i know it would be alot of money in the secondary, but i dont think our front seven or line have to be particularly money positions considering phillips put together an awesome front 7 with only castillo, merriman, and williams as big names guys.
despite that i would be happy with nelson at 22 and i think he had an official time of 4.49 which sounds alot better than his unoffficial of 4.53.
i think i would still rather have eric weddle though.
Free Safety Michael Griffin ( 5’11†202 )did well at the Combine;
4.45 – Forty, 36†Vertical Jump, 16 Bench.
Cornerback Aaron Ross ( 6’0†193 )was solid as well;
4.44 – Forty, 17 Bench.
Cornerback Marcus McCauley ( 6’0†203 ) looks good too;
4.39 – Forty, 36†Vertical Jump, 17 Bench.
All GMs draft best available unless they have a huge need. Sometimes the best available is a huge need.
The Boys won’t see Levi Brown at #22, he is the second rated OT in the draft. He can’t slip past the Gmen.
Same reason, how can Quinn fall past both the Texans and Dolphins?
Houston was second fastest corner and benched 225 for 28 reps. Id take him over anyone based on the guys he went against every week and how he did playing mostly man to man.
The draft expert that had Quinn going 28th needs to step away from the glass pipe.
How did NT Paul Soliai do?
I hate to take in the underwear olympics, but wow, Chris Houston blew everyone away at the combine. That’s too bad. I was hoping he’d be there in round 2. Might move all the way up to around our first rounder.
Reggie Nelson had a solid day. I don’t think he helped or hurt himself. Kind of acceptable numbers for a safety. I think he plays a lot faster than his time. I also think it’s a lot more likely he’ll be around at our pick.
Daymeion Hughes almost running a 4.7 is shocking. Since his college career ended he’s lost 4 inches and 2/10ths from his 40 time. He might drop big.
Maybe Eric Wright lasts to our 2nd rounder. He showed real well too.
Sam, I think Houston just ran way past our second pick, maybe up to or at least close to our first. If we go corner with Henry making the switch is he our guy.
Gurode’s contract:
Length: 6 years
Signing bonus: $10 million
Prorated bonus hit: $1.67M @ year
Base salaries (cap figure)
If we waste a 2nd rounder on a kicker, I’ll break something.
One OL I like is Samson Statele from Hawaii.
He’s a C/G hybrid, and has some quickness. I’ve seen him projected to us in the 2nd round.
Ill probably go and do a new round of mocks after the combine is processed by the various websites.
