Losman Redux — Dallas Trades Down to 36
Posted: April 28, 2007 @ 2:30 pm
4:07 — (Raul) The Cowboys trade the 2nd rounder they got from Cleveland (36), a 3rd rounder (87) and a 5th rounder (159) to Philadelphia for their 1st rounder (26) and select DE Anthony Spencer from Purdue.
The 26th pick is worth 700 points. The 3 picks Dallas offered are worth 723. The 5th rounder itself is worth 28 points, so Dallas could package any of their two 6th rounders or three 7th rounders to move into the 5th if they so desire.
3:18 — The Cowboys select NOBOBY with the 22nd pick. They trade down with Cleveland, who selects QB Brady Quinn.
The points difference between 22 and 26 is 240 points or an early 3rd rounder. We’ll see what Dallas got in return.
Update: Dallas gets Cleveland’s 2008 #1. Cowboys fans now have two teams to root for every Sunday — the ‘Pokes and the team playing the Browns.
3:04 — The Jaguars take Reggie Nelson, making it four DBs in a row. The Cowboys are up.
2:58 — The Giants draft Texas CB Aaron Ross. Not a surprise. They badly need cornerback help. The DB run deepens.
Notice the last seven picks? Revis, Hall, Griffin, Ross. The top three CBs are gone.
2:48 – The Titans take Michael Griffin. He’s the 19th pick. We’re officially into the “who do you love” area, where the board will get awfully, awfully squishy.
Also, the DB run is starting early. If you want one, definitely get one now.
2:37 — Get your defense early. This is an offensive heavy draft, yet seven of the last eight picks have been on defense. Teams know if they don’t fill their sacks early on that side of the ball they miss out.
2:30 and what do we know?
– Brady Quinn is falling, and he could fall farther than Aaron Rogers. Who needs a QB in the next eight to ten picks? The Bengals are set. So is Tennessee, the Giants, etc. The Jags might think about him but I don’t think they’ll go QB.
Dallas could be in position to pull another Losman deal, moving down into the early 2nd with teams like Cleveland, Detroit and Tampa Bay, who could have taken Quinn in the first.
– Best move so far — the Jets moving up to get Darelle Revis. He fills a huge hole and they had two 2nds to play with, both late in the round.
– From Dallas’ perspective: Jacksonville still sits ahead of the Cowboys and is an even more likley candidate to take Reggie Nelson at 21, IMO.

I guess the biggest question mark is what Jax will do now?
Quinn’s fall is pretty dramatic
I thought Moss might fall…
I think Quinn will be the real deal…been bred for the NFL. You know a crazy thought…Dallas won’t take Quinn because of Romo, but what if Romo burns out and can’t live up to what he did last year. Dallas could quite possibly regret not taking Quinn in the future. But, they really can’t take him with Romo on board.
I think Ginn was taken way too early..
Hall to Bengals
Jacksonville will probably take Quinn.
Looks like Reggie Nelson might be available at #22.
SCn,
I don’t know if Nelson makes it past Jacksonville. Look where they moved back to - right in front of the last team who might be lusting after Nelson…
Screw Nelson, Merriweather is better. We need to take Branch at 22 or drop back.
The teams in the back of the first round are just laughing right now. All the top rated Guards are still available, and three of the four top rated FS and SS
WOW! Tennessee take Griffin! There goes one good safety, but everyone else still slides. Nelson, Branch, Quinn, Merriweather still on the board.
Thank God for Tenessee. When I saw Gosselin had us taking him I was terriffied.
Branch is in for a long freefall it seems…
New England is in a perfect position with all these good players falling. Man, I hate those guys.
I think it’s merriweather, ross, or houston. or trade down at this point (assuming nelson goes to the Jags)
love to trade out for somebody wanting quinn
I’m hoping we can make the Quinn trade. Everyone knows KC will take him. We have the last pick before KC. COME ON GUYS, TRADE UP FOR QUINN!
Gosselin has us taking Ross at 22.
Some much for that…
ross gone..trade out!
There went Ross! Let’s get Merriweather.
Ross goes to teh Giants. Ouch.
Ok, Nelson, Branch, Quinn, MerriW, Houston still on the board. Only Jax to go before us.
The boys on the Ticket say we’re not interested in Nelson
here it comes the good part
Meriweather or Nelson for DB
or Branch for NT
Merriweather, Branch, or trade down.
Ross gone now watch Jax take Nelson.
Jerry Just take Merriweather and call it a day…
Looks very good for a trade down!
And Spags just said Dallas will not draft Nelson.
If I’m Dallas, I’m taking calls from Detroit and Cleveland and playing them off one another.
A 2, a 4, and a 1 in 2008. If I don’t get that I draft Quinn and see what happens.
quinn????
BPA are Quinn, Meachem, Nelson, Staley. Looks like trade down time to me if they don’t like Nelson. Meachem… not sure on him. Hear he doesn’t like going in the middle
And Nelson is gone
I never saw Branch play, but when I hear bad motor it makes me think of what was said about Spears before he was drafted(lazy and fat).
here we go!!!
nooooooooo
uh oh quinn’s still there
here it is..
There goes Reggie Nelson to Jax. Great move by them to trade down with Denver. Still get their guy, and pick up a 3rd and a 6th.
Dang, there goes Nelson…Branch, Quinn, Trade down….TRADE DOWN
Nelson to Jax makes sense. They abused Denver. I like him a lot but wasn’t crazy about drafting a FS in RD1.
houston merriweather or trade down
Merriweather? Branch? Trade down w/ Quinn? WR?
tick tock tick tock…..
come on jj do something smart
best value is trade down, but will merriweather still be there? damn
How about Dwayne Bowe? Except for the LSU thing…
I wouldn’t mind Quinn…look what Atlanta got for Shaub this year. I want them to trade down more, but if they don’t, I say take Quinn.
New England WILL take Merriweather.
gulp!!
Nobody on the phone in the war room… either a deal is already done or we’re picking here.
Trade Down!
Trade Down!
Trade Down!
like clockwork there goes nelson
Talking trade with Cleveland
Key just mentioned Jarrett…NOOOO
camera off…what do we do here ?..me trade down..
Key is always going to mention any USC players.
Could pick up Brown’s 1st next year. Where is they’re 2nd this year? Anyone know?
Make the deal, Jerry!!!!!!!!! We want Cleveland’s 1st rounder next year!!!!!
I’d trade down.
Too bad about Nelson. The only thing dumber thing than a WR would be Brady Quinn. I’m pulling for a CB or Staley. Please JJ, don’t regress to the bad old days.
Trade down, saying it with me guys….TRADE DOWN.
Count my vote for Quinn. But wait, I want a WR…or Safety…or DT.
Crap…I don’t know!
the browns for an 08 1rst and a 3rd this yr, im greedy i want a 2nd rd this yr instead of a 3rd. quinn was thought to be a top 10 pick and the browns were close to taking him at 3.
Jkdallas,
Where did you here that about Cleveland! Yes, I hope it’s true.
Trade Down!
Trade Down!
Trade Down!
Bowe would be sweet. A good trade down would too. Just please nothing out of left field please.
No to Quinn.
Luke-
NFL network. No real details yet
whats wrong with just taking merriweather?
Black out on war room cam, BTW
How can we pass Bowe or Jarrett? That’s the next Michael Irvin!
Branch
Merriweather
Quinn
Bowe
Meachem
I could live with any of those but I want to trade down because we can still get one of those guys in the late 1st or early 2nd.
Someone please guide Jerral in his time of need….
Like 2:00 left…
Here comes a trade down….I feel it!
here it is…
We have a trade… Cleveland
this is real drama, come on jerry
DAMN
trade!!! with browns
Jkdallas,
Thanks man.
Cleveland’s second rounder could get us Blalock!
And if we could get their first next year too it’d be super sweet, and it’d be a high pick to.
traded down!
Quinn will go to Cleveland. We get next year #1 and this year’s #2
we get a 1 and a 2 NEVER MIND hell yeah
YES!!!!!!!!!!! TRADE WITH CLEVELAND!
what did we get for the trade?
OMFG this pisses me off I waited all morning for this BS??? A freakin’ trade? Screw it I’m gonna go do something more productive.
YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
brilliant! two 1s next year and an additional 3 this year. the only thing is we have to wait until 53 to pick again. Maybe we’ll trade up from there using our additional 3rd.
At least the long wait is over for Quinn.
browns get an A for this round
This Cleveland pick could be a top 5 choice.
We could have the #1 pick next year… WOW. Freaking greatness. Moved down 14 slots, though
We get Cleveland’s 1st next year or this is stupid
ok, so what’s jerry going to do with the high 2nd?
2008 1st round draft? Micheal Oher/Jared Gaither here we come!!!
We’ll have a LT for ten years….
what was the trade? a second now, and a 1st in 08? anything else?
we a 2nd pick and 1st next year
never mind
oh, we got a 2nd and not a 3rd? I’m confused now
Nice move, Dallas.
great move
next years number 1 and this years what 3 out of the first round…..and 15 players from where we were picking…..
i like it…..
still plenty of G/C/ NT/ on board…..and oh yeah a few FS/ CBs as well….and perhaps a WR or two
So what do we plan on doing with a top 5 pick next year? Any early ideas?
Moving down 13 picks is not that far. We all said for the last three months this was no man’s land. One of these players we’re talking about at #22 will still be there and there’s the potential for a VERY high pick next year. This is a good move.
Ok, Sidney Rice at 36, here we come!
WOW…..Hamlin better be good. Remember this day.
Nice trade Jerry!!!!!!
i hope there will be a good FS left at 36
Now with the high second we can still get a good WR or S
I hate to even suggest this, but if Romo doesn’t work out next year, you may have a shot at a franchise quarterback through the draft now.
I think we’ll go WR now, sicne the S are going to be gone
or maybe a OL
This is AWESOME!!!
Brilliant. Exactly what I hoped would happen. A 1st and a 2nd! That 08 first will at least be a top 15 pick and probably top 10.
We were in an absolutely perfect position to benefit from Quinn’s fall. Luck is with us today. Well done Jerry, well done.
Great trade. I’m going to start dreaming about McFadden. We could have a great pick next year. I HATE the Browns in 2007.
exept we don’t get a first round Fs. We really need one.
we wont know have great a trade until what we get in the 2nd and what we get next year in the first.
Still could take our 2 #2’s and move up if we want…
Looks like a 22nd this year for a top ten pick in 2008 plus an additional high 2nd this year. Wow! What’s not to like here? I wonder what the early assessment of the overall talent available in 2008 is. My gut feeling is that overall 2007 was not a super-strong draft. I’d be less excited if Nelson hadn’t been taken by Jax. There should be a decent safety or OL left by the time we get to Cleveland’s second round pick. Excellent.
There are a bunch of players that the Cowboys have on their radar. Have to hope one of them fall to pick 36. Spencer, Merriweather, Grubbs, Houston, Blaylock, etc. .. Cleveland’s #1 next year, might that be enough bait to now land Turner? Then, if Dallas does indeed have a suitor for Julius Jones, they may be able to land another 2nd rounder. This could get interesting.
I just heard we may be trying to get back in the first with those 2 seconds
We won’t know if this was negative or positive until halfway through next season. I still think we should have picked up a FS.
We are not trading our two 2nds to get a first!!
God must be a Cowboy fan cause that was a gift. A top 10 pick next year to go with our 32nd.
Damn I wanted Bowe. Still worth it for that trade.
Freaking awesome way to maximize value of the 22 pick. No pick would have the same value that we got right there. God, I’m psyched right now. JJ did this one right for a change!
Maybe Quinn should have gone fishin with Joe Thomas and his dad……uh perhaps he will now.
You know though I gotta give Cleveland Credit they got the Tackle and the QB they wanted……
I like it from Dallas side too though.
The Ticket says we’re working on a trade up.
I am really cool with this move, now what happens with julius. we could get another 2nd
back into the first? why would we? Unless we really want to scoop new england on houston or merriweather
Maybe a 2nd and 3rd to move up and snag Jarrett?
Use our pick in the second #22 and our third #87 to move back into round one for Merriweather. Then with #36 from Cleveland take Justin Blalock.
i like this trade, i like it a lot
i wouldn’t mind that
Correction;
Use our pick in the second #53 and our third #87 to move back into round one for Merriweather. Then with #36 from Cleveland take Justin Blalock.
our pick 13 away, these guys still on the board
Alan Branch DT Michigan
Brandon Meriweather S Miami
Joe Staley OT Central Michigan
Dwayne Jarrett WR USC
Robert Meachem WR Tennessee
Justin Blalock OG Texas
Chris Houston CB Arkansas
Anthony Spencer DE Purdue
Sidney Rice WR South Carolina
Eric Wright CB UNLV
Eric Weddle S Utah
Steve Smith WR USC
Maybe for Staley, Merriweather, or meachem. Could be Spencer too I guess.
how far do you guys think branch will fall
no way he is there at 53, mabey if we package a few later round picks we can move up to the mid 40s if he is still there
Branch has been solidly in the 2nd round for a while now.
If I was the Cowboys here I’d be dong everything MI could to move up and get Branch guys with his combo of size/athleticism don’t come around very often nor do they happen to fit our scheme as well as he does.
Random thoughts:
The Ticket has the best draft coverage from a Cowboy’s point of view. Just excellent.
Goodell sure is much more casual than his predecessors in anouncing the picks. I think I like it.
Bobby Carpenter sounds like a student of the draft. Good stuff.
Jerry on the phone.
giving up a 5th and a 6th could be enough
Branch will be there at 36, but I don’t think we want him. Certainly not worth trading up for.
Cape,
Good list … That is why Dallas will stay put at 36. They may want to move up in round two, if they can get two ooff your list. … Don’t forget about Ben Grubbs either.
pats got merriweather
Meriwether gone… bummer
Damn, Merriweather went to New England
Well Meriweather is gone, so we have to wait and see. Tank Tyler at 53 and Steve Smith at 36.
NE take Merriweather
They just won the Super Bowl!
are there any decent FS left?
i just hope spencer does not go to philly
I started to swear because Meriweather’s gone. But then I remembered that we’ve got a top 5 pick next year! Sweet. Maybe we can get the Skins to give us their 2008 #1 for todays #53–that would be two top 5 picks next year!
Merriweather to the Pats.
Now will everyone shut up about him being a bad character guy?
Now we get to watch him shut down Crayton on third down…
there we go merriweather and beason like clockwork, now goes houston
i dont think we re gonna take a FS unless its weedle. he would be nice at 53 but with all the DBs going I dont think he will be there.
considering we got an extra number 1 next year, if we got weedle I would be real happy.
gonzalez is still around right, him or rice would be nice picks.
ESPN braggin up how Merriweather will fit in with Belichek and Brady.
UGHHH……could the media be farther up those two guys but.
Brady the Bastard Producer.
Belichek the Adulterer…….
But they win on the field and they must have high character?
If the Cowboys took Merriweather these bozos would be telling us how he was going to be arrested……
mediots…..
Yeah, you can best believe, the Eagles will take him. Mark it down!
Another 9-7 year. Yippi!
FS left, I think Weddle from Utah is the last one that fits our need.
I really hope Houston does go soon, ideally to Philly. I think he’s all talk and weight room flash. He’d fit right in the with punks from Philly. I’m hoping for Sidney Rice at #36, and Eric Wright at #53.
Hi fives in war room… something’s up
dallas and philly? hell freezes over
were back on the board
i guess we get houston then, or spencer? or even WR, could go anywhere now
Please take Meachem! God, Please!
Trade with Eagles. We give 36, 87, 159 for #26
What did we give up?
Jarrett
back on the clock……
Typical JR Ewing……I mean Jerry Jones……..willing and dealing
I’m hearing Spencer.
I’m shocked Philly traded with us.
Holy crap, we just traded up with Philly.
Spencer? Meacham? Houston? Staley?
Why? There was no need to trade up and give away picks.
I like Meachem. Hopefully it’s him.
what did we give up???
what did we lose in the trade?
Good pick. Anthony Spencer
ANTONY SPENCER BABY
spencer!!
What are we doing? Are we trying to keep the Eagles in first place for another 10 year?
we give up a 2nd, 3rd and 5???
but we had two 2nd…..which 2nd did we give up?
Staley or Grubbs. Too high for a Guard? as said over and over . That position is rising in stature.
Jerry is on fire this year!
So basically and 3rd and a 5th for Cleveland’s #1 next year and Spencer? Sound right?
YES!! Spencer
Do they pick Houston with the 26th, because Aaron Glenn is getting long in the tooth?
We are picking Anthony Spencer. I don’t like this move…another front 7 guy. Who is going to sit now? Carpenter? Ellis? Burnett? I think they should have waited a bit.
So much for my crusade to use our first on offense for a change. Oh well, I can’t complain too much b/c I’m salivating over having the Browns 1 next year.
I don’t get the Spencer love. Seems like a pointless pick.
bet we are going after Branch
Pass Rush!!!!!!!!!!!
Spencer!
Another pick on deffense….my god.
Ticket saying Spencer is who our scouts wanted. Can’t have enough LBs/DEs in the 3-4 right?
The Spencer pick reminds me of Carpenter last year. Hardly a wash-out, but not the best.
another DE / OLB get me some sacks man!!!
well bookend, bookend, bookend……perhaps Wade was not overly impressed with Carpenter, Ellis, and Burnett……
we now need to get some picks bundled and get back into the 3rd round this year.
261lbs Spencer, can he beef up and move inside?
I dunno, it does not seem like we got the BPA
My guess is they thought they needed to get in front of NE to get Spencer. NE needs linebackers.
Another @#$@#! front seven guy, c’mon!
Why give up your 2nd and your 3rd when you could have him at 22. Now the Eagles have two 2nds and two 3rds. Guys, that is crazy!
I guess we like stockpiling the Eagles roster!
Spencer it is at 26.
So we effectively trade #87 and 159 for Cleveland’s first next year?
alan branch!
Anyone seen this guy play?
I understand the benefit of a pass rush. Just seems we could have drafted a more developmental hybrid guy and develop behind Carpenter.
this pick stinks!!!!!!!!!!!
Scout,
Don’t forget the probable top 5 pick next year
Sam.I.Am:
One of the reasons the Cowboys got so burned last year once Ellis went down is that they lost alot of their pass rush. Joe Thomas, Cleveland’s #3 pick said that Spencer was the only pass rusher he had any difficulty with last year. I think this pick means that Carpenter is playing inside and Ellis is not as healthy as they’d like. This kid will play OLB and is exactly what the Cowboys needed. In fact, I’d be curious to see if Ellis is due a roster bonus or something.
