2nd Day Open Thread

10:20 — Dallas was not joking about selecting a QB. It takes Washington signal caller Isaiah Stanback with the 103rd pick.

10:10 — Oakland starts the 4th by picking RB Michael Bush.

    greatwhitenorth on April 29th, 2007 10:24 am

There’s not much point in taking a WR after this, even though I like Clowney and thing Dallas Baker has as good a chance as Jarrett at becoming a nice receiver. But there’s not room on the roster for 6 receivers, and whoever we’d take from here on out probably won’t be better than Hurd and Austin… I’m for throwing multiple picks at CB and OL and hoping something sticks.

  21. 21
Adam McCloskey on April 29th, 2007 10:24 am

He’ll play some qb, play some wr, maybe return a kick and be a gunner on special teams.

Quarterback is the position Stanback wants to play, but he has enough athletic ability and speed — he finished fifth in the 100 meters at the Pac-10 meet in 2005 — to play safety. Or wide receiver. Or kick returner. Or a combination of them.

  30. 30
    birdness on April 29th, 2007 10:27 am

That pick sucked! We could have had Stanback in the 7th. At 103, we needed Paul Soliai. Lack of a part time NT is our biggest hole.

  31. 31
    Grantp on April 29th, 2007 10:28 am

We had the opportunity to spend the night thinking it over… had command of the board… Players rated 2nd round picks available. Good Linemen available. We take a (slower) clone of Skyler Green. Don’t we alrady have Bilbo on the roster??? I bet he runs a faster 40 than Stanback’s 4.62.

  32. 32
    Blitzkrieg on April 29th, 2007 10:29 am

I’m not going to judge this pick since I know close to nothing abou the guy, but the analysts on the NFL Network really liked the pick so I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do. He can’t be worse that Green was last year….could he?

  33. 33
    birdness on April 29th, 2007 10:29 am

Now I see why Jerry wanted Stanback

    from Fox Sports

“he was a prep standout in baseball and, despite not playing that game at the collegiate level, the Baltimore Orioles selected him in the 45th round of the 2006 draft”

  34. 34

We tried to get 2 players with one pick but the guys not really good enough at either to stick. Jerry’s math:

  35. 35

I do agree with birdness though. Soliai would have been my pick with Bush off the board. Ferguson can’t do this on his own for much longer. Maybe he’ll still be there with our second 4th or maybe they’ll take a chance with Walter Thomas

On the face of it IMHO, this is a bad direction to go - why pick a player who is a jack of all trades but a master of none, when you could get a quality DB, NT or developmental QB?

I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy doesn’t even make the team

  42. 42
Brooklyn Rancher on April 29th, 2007 10:33 am

  44. 44
    AustonianAggie7 on April 29th, 2007 10:34 am

Incidentally, Isiah Stanback seems to play QB the way Tony Romo does, athletic and quick. He’ll probably start as the 3rd QB, and do other roles until he’s formally the #2 or better.

The scouting profiles all agree that he has enough talent to come in to the NFL as a QB. His arm strength is nearly shocking. In that hail marry above linked above, he throws the ball from about the 25 to the opposite 4 yard line, and gets the TD.

Look we all know Jerry has a weakness for arms that can stretch the field. He’ll have a role on this team, even if its 3rd string QB, and the Cowboys will try to fix this guys short field mechanics and raise his accuracy.

Or, imagine a half back toss with this guy throwing, or a what looks like a WR screen turned in to a WR Toss.

All those teams that overlooked Marino must feel that way, but we really couldn’t have taken Quinn, because for now Romo’s the guy. Quinn would have complicated matters..plus it’s no guarantee that Quinn will be any good…remember Tim Couch, Cade McNown etc.

I agree with most on this board…I don’t like this pick. It’s understandable to take a WR in the 2nd round as you can see a player of that caliber beating out someone like Miles Austin, but a guy in the 4th? This is Skyler Green all over again. With all the player left on the board, I can’t believe the Cowboys took this guy.

    vandy on April 29th, 2007 10:43 am

I watched Stanback play for the beleaguered Washington Huskies. He is certainly no starting QB, but don’t dismiss his speed. He may have ran a 4.5 40, but he also ran a 10.48 100 meters. Now that is fast. Further, as opposed to most QB’s his size, he isn’t fragile (despite this freak ankle injury). He is a very mobile QB, but I suspect he will play WR and special teams for the Boys. How many back-up QB’s can do that?

He has played receiver before and he is a very gifted athlete. Given the kind of receiver we are looking for (3/4 hopefully), I think Stanback is a good pick.

As opposed to others who think he may have gone undrafted or in the 6th or something, this is about where most thought he was going to go (mid-rounder).

Here’s the thing about passing on Quinn.

You think Romo is the guy.

    They think he is.

    I think he is.

    But if he’s not….

You have a whole year to figure that out, and then next year you come back in a position to draft Henne or Brohm.

You basically bought yourself a year to find out if Romo’s the guy, and didn’t waste resources this year finding out.

I think the Cowboys best hope scenario is Stanbach develops like Brett Farve, and they tame his arm and develop his mechanics while he rides the bench. And as a 3rd QB he may still offer depth at a veriety of positions over the course of the season. He has real QB talent, more than Green or Bilbo.

Knowing that Stanbach has been compared to Brad Smith who was taken with 11th pick of the 4th Round last year to play WR/jack of all trades makes me wonder real hard about him being there for the next pick, especially when you’re considering the measurables that Stanbach had before his ankle injury, 10.48 in 100-meters?

Stanback potentially adds depth to 3 roles, back-up QB, WR & return specialist. It’s a good pick.

He could have a competitive role on the DL imeaditely rather than needing more time to develop.

People can quit pot and not relapse very succesfully. I think he’s worth it as a second day flier.

And while I see what you’re saying about Meyer’s attempt at family forging, Meyer is also the kind of guy to make an example out of somebody and use fear to underlie his motivations. Not that the pros are different. Although maybe the cowboys will be, w/o BP around.

Stanbeck is 6′2″ 216 and has been clocked at 4.5.

This is a potential WR/Punt Returner pick, not a QB.

We’re thinking Randel El here, not Romo’s replacement.

Boys are almost back on the clock: FB or DT?

  150. 150
    onepaniolo on April 29th, 2007 11:19 am

Adam McCloskey, post 73, just hit the nail on the head. Romo backs up last year’s performance, or we have an early 1st round pick as insurance.

This also gives us insurance if Hamlin/Watkins is not the answer at FS.

I see the glass as half full.

I think Romo shows us he’s for real, and Hamlin shows that he’s fully recovered from his head injury and is our FS with Watkins learning behind him.

Spencer gives us an awesome pass rush with Ellis alternating between DE and OLB depending on the situation. Carpenter moves inside, but has the ability to rush from the inside or the outside.

Imagine the versatility this all gets us for a minute. You’re a QB facing Carpenter, Ellis, Ware, and Spencer. Who is coming at you and who’s dropping back? Carpenter, Ellis and Ware can do that now, and if Spencer can as well, then we’ll have one hellacious pass rush! Please Ellis…. come back healthy!!!!!

On top of that, with Hamlin around, look for Roy to play a lot more close to the line of scrimmage and that give us even more versatility.

As for those screaming for a CB, Aaron Glenn can still do it, and he’s not playing every down. Darrell Green was a lot older and was still effective, so until Glenn can no longer do it, and provided Henry can stay healthy, I think we’re still set at CB. Reeves and Jones gives us added depth and experience.

James Marten gives us a back-up Tackle as well as Guard, since he’s played both spots. I see Davis starting at Guard if Rivera can no longer do it and he also gives us a lot of versatility, then there is McQ! A back up center is needed with the departure of Al Johnson, but otherwise, no glaring holes on the line.

NT worries me a bit, but I think with no two-gap responsibilities, I think Spears and Canty can back up Fergie, and there is also Mount Stanley.

Overall, I am happy so far!

  151. 151
    Chandus on April 29th, 2007 11:20 am

    Which are the real needs?

WR? Stanback has a whole lot more potential than the scrubs that were there, you’re noticing that no WR was selected until this Ryne Robinson?

NT? There’re still some NT prospects in a real bellow average NT crop. How can you tell that Soliai is a much better prospect than the next tier of guys?

CB? I also think that it’s a need that requires attention, but… If the FO doesn’t thinks that the current value is capable of giving the likes of Jacques Reeves a run for their money, then not selecting those players is teh way to go.

FS? I think that they liked Marvin White out of TCU and it’s a shame that he isn’t available anymore. It’s likely that Gattis and Wendling are prospects that are rated similarly.

OG? We don’t know what the team thinks of Cory Proctor, we do know what we have at starter in Kosier and I have high hopes for Davis. We also know this, Marten can also play G.

I agree with those that say what the hell is Jerry doing.

The first move was genius but so what, hes bound to screw it up next year.

You could have had Eric Wright (despite the character issues) who could compete for Henry’s job giving you flexibility to move him to FS if things dont work out with Hamlin and Watkins.

You could have had Trent Edwards who has the skills to be a franchise QB but needs time.

Lets say Romo is not the answer, our WR get old and Julius JOnes splits, then what the hell do you do next year…package the picks and get the best QB then what about RB and WR or vice versa….what is the experiment at FS doesnt work either. YOu could have 4 possibly 5 holes next year with DT.

If you take Wright or Edwards , you at least are trying to fill 2 of those. You could have had Jason Hill or yor DT, there are so many players on the board. Jerry is trying to be too cute and he is screwing up this draft.

So what if we have 2 1’s next year. You cant fill QB, RB, WR, DT, OT, FS with those number 1’s

    Free’s college coach -

“No question, Doug has the talent to play on Sundays. Knock on wood, I believe he’s going to be a first-round draft pick. Doug Free’s a lot better athlete than Ryan Diem. (Free) can run! You just don’t see many offensive linemen that can run at that size like he can. What’s impressive is he’ll sit back in pass protection and then we’ll throw the ball down the field and he’ll run down field and block a safety. I mean, get downfield! You just don’t see kids who can do that. He’s special. Our kids call him ‘Doug Freak’ because he runs so well.”
