Status Update for Day 1 of Training Camp

Posted: July 25, 2007 @ 12:41 pm

Some very brief status updates as we head into Day 1 of Training Camp at long last:

Flozell Adams will not practice today because his conditioning is not up to snuff after minor offseason knee surgery.

Marc Colombo will not practice today and could be out for the entire first week or more after having his knee scoped a few weeks back.

Greg Ellis has been cleared to practice and should be able to participate in all drills.

I just dropped $250 registering for the LSAT and the like and will be spending more on applications in the fall, so it won’t be much, but in a few years I should have no problem contributing.

Hallelujah! Has this been a long time coming or what?

Training camp’s begun. Is this ‘92 redux?…as I’ve been blogging since last season’s training camp. Is this the beginning of the next Cowboy’s dynasty?

Man, I just really believe it is. Every single position has a positive sign, if not absolute top shelf talent.

WR’s - Check* I’ll get to the asterisk in a sec.
RB - Check again, with a footnote.
QB - Yup. At worst he’s adequate.
OL - Yes…maybe. Definitely got the future covered and moving in the right direction.
    TE - Oh yeah.

Last year’s collection of first timers, new additions, vets and youngters were Number 5 in the NFL. Best statistical year since ‘95. This year’s group should be even better.

Defense? Come on. Outside FS & backup spots, is there any questions at all in talent. They’re young, reaching their prime (3+ years) and have proven in spurts that they can shut down the best in the league.

The new scheme, upgrade in personnel, depth and seasoning of these guys portend to Chicago/Baltimore-type potential.

    Is this great or what?!

Allright, enough of the optimistic crap.

WTF is up with Spencer and Marten? They absolutely should have been there starting with the first team! Complete BULLSHIT! (sorry initials weren’t strong enough).

Seriously. They’re slotted. There is no (zero) mystery as to what they’re going to get. Just get to camp. NOW!

    larry on July 25th, 2007 6:19 pm

Love your optimism, but c’mon. Is there any doubt about the talent on defense???
Um, unfortunately, yeah, a ton. See: Last 5 games last year!
Hey, Fighter, you’re not still investing in real estate, are you?
Ratcliffe, Canty, Spears, Hatcher-have to prove it in a real game! They’ve done nada.
LB’s-besides Ware, mediocrity-unless Ellis, at his age, is going to suddenly return to his previous level from an achilles injury. At the position that probably CAUSED that injury.
CB’s-I’m OK with Glenn and Henry, but they’re getting old.
I love the addition of Hamlin, but Williams has a lot to prove, too. And not just in coverage-he was pretty bad at tackling last year, too.
OH, and we’ve built our entire philosophy on the 3-4 and put it on the shoulders (sorry, bad pun) of ‘ole man River Ferguson.
    C’mon.

    Larry,

You’ve been drinkin’ too much hate juice.

Yeah, I’ll take a group of sophomores that were fourth in the NFL last year through 11 games as a group I can grow with.

They finished 9th/10th. Yeah, I’ll put my lot on them improving in a new system. There is not a single unit in the NFL that I’d rather have. Right now. None.

    Fighter15 on July 25th, 2007 8:05 pm

Unit-by-unit, Defensively, we’ve got as much talent as any in football.

DL? - We’ve got four, maybe five that any team in football would trade for tomorrow…not counting Fergie.

LB? - Baltimore in ‘06, but not ‘07. Chicago, maybe. I’ll take ours, right now, straight up.

CB? - We have the best threesome in the league. Period.

S? - Say what you want, but Roy Willy’s made 3 straight Pro Bowls. Hamlin is good. I love the depth.

Together, this team is breaking out. Watch and learn. Hating is easy. Just watch this team and appreciate what you are about to see. ‘85 Bears, I tell ya.

    larry on July 25th, 2007 8:36 pm

I’m not saying they’re terrible, but just what have these guys on the DL done that makes you rate them so high? “Done” being the key word.
What would someone trade us for one of DLine guys? A 3rd or 4th rounder maybe.
Bradie James, Oyodele, and an old, injured Greg Ellis are now one of the greatest LB units ever???
Let’s hope for a great season, but be realistic. We’re not 11-year olds. We’re knowledgeable football fans. Right?
But then again, maybe it was the scheme? Parcells, and things will really improve.

  16. 16
    Fighter15 on July 25th, 2007 9:01 pm

Done. Like being a top 10 defense for ‘06? Like being top 4 for 11 weeks?

James and Ayodele got multi-year, multi-million buck deals for a reason. There were other takers.

But I’ll go one further. We got 4 first round draft picks (Ellis, Carpenter, Ware, Spencer), ab second rounder (Burnett), and Ayodele, who is a proven preformer. What the heck are you looking at? These are serious performers.

Our secondary is consistenty rated high by the pundits (mediots, though they be).

Our DL is solid. Bordering on fantastic. We’ve got a rotation that rivals our ‘92-’95 years. True, they need to step it up, but dang.

TOP 4 through 11 weeks. What the fuc* do you want? That’s a great look at a young group.

Did they fold like a cheap tent? Yeah. But at least they showed up early.

    Yeah, I’ll take this group.

Love the optimism, fighter! I just can’t wait to see this D in action–here’s betting they put more points on the board than the offense in some game this year–and that’s not a slight against the offense!

    greatwhitenorth on July 25th, 2007 10:08 pm

And Larry, if you can’t act like an 11-year-old on the opening day of training camp, what good is it to be a football fan? This is better than Christmas! There will be plenty of time for serious debate later… like next offseason when we’re dreaming about back-to-back undefeated seasons!

Love the optimism too Fighter!! I wonder how our D-line is going to do this year too, but I think Wade Phillips is going to be the difference. I listened to WP’s press conference today and I thought he had some good things to say. The one I liked was when some mediot asked if Tony Romo got figured out in the games in December and that’s why we fell apart. When WP said no, the a55 asked if the Saints had given the rest of the league a blue print on how to beat Romo. Wade then responded that the Saints gave our opponents a blue print to beat our D, not Romo.

WP also mentioned again how he fits schemes to players, not the other way around. He takes different players and does different things with them. He talked about the different types of NT’s he’s used and how he played each different. This guy is soooo not Parcells. And I’m loving it!!

Just curious, does anybody know what came of SD trying to peddle Michael Turner?

I thought before this years’ draft they said someone had offered them a 1st (they did not clarify if it was a ‘07 or ‘08 1st).

    From DC.com;

After a year or two of working with Tony, do you think you feel you guys have gelled better as a quarterback/receiver relationship?

Owens: “Well, I mean that’s the purpose of training camp and that’s the purpose of really mini-camp and OTA’s, is to try to get that chemistry and that timing down. I mean every day Tony instructs me and tries to keep me on my P’s and Q’s, and I’m doing the same with him. We just try to be on time and be precise with our routes and the timing of the offense.”

The former QB tormenter is happy. The undrafted Eastern Illinois quarterback has TO minding his P’s and Q’s.

Romo and TO appear a match made in heaven. Maybe it’s because Romo is such a hyper guy himself that he can actually be active enough to give TO the attention he wants? I also think Romo is very smart, he may not always act it and seems to enjoy playing the fool a bit but I think he’s very aware of his personal impact and personality dynamics on the team and of personalities within the team. He appears a natural leader, though not in the style of our last great leader quarterback – Troy Aikman.

Owens: “It’s fun and I’m just trying to get that rhythm down. There’s a lot of chemistry with Tony when I’m out there on the football field.”

Crack open another bottle of optimism.

    From DC.com

Corner Terence Newman noticed the head coach’s lively disposition immediately.

“Phillips is down to earth and he was definitely excited today,” Newman said. “At the end of practice, you think he’d be calm, but he came up and was jumping around, excited about how up-tempo the practice was. Everyone feeds off that.”

Starting training camp without pads on was a first for Phillips and his new team, but it was a generally well-received idea.

“This is a day for us to kind of come out, run around, start the journey as far as getting in shape and getting in football shape,” fifth-year veteran tight end Jason Witten said. “It’s so good for us to kind of get this rust off. We’ve got a long journey here to put the pads on and get going.”

I really like the way Wade has started camp. He seems to have got the players positive and excited. That’s a good way to kick things off.

Thousands of gallons of water and sewage flooded their facility- I can’t think of why Quinn would hold out.
