4th Quarter Blogging

– The kickoff coverage has been much better in the second half, stopping the Texans at the 15 on both the last two kickoffs.

Brad Johnson was just saving his arm in camp.  He doesn’t have a gun, but he dropped a perfect throw over a linebacker to Tony Curtis on Dallas last scoring drive.

– Nick Folk’s kickoffs have been inside the five tonight.  The last one went to the two.  He’s nosed ahead in the kicking derby.  Martin Gramatica still kicks off better, but missing an extra point doesn’t help him.

– Bad, bad night for Jacques Reeves.  His sell by date might be passed.

Gary Kubiak is throwing some funky stuff at Dallas, using a rocket pitch to fool Junior Glymph.  Sam Gado took the run 21 yards.

–  Alan Ball gets an education, biting on a pump and go.  Abram Elam was way too late over the top and the Cowboys fall behind 28-16.

– Pat McQuistan has the last two Cowboys kickoff returns.  Draw your own conclusions.

– Browns watch:  I’m watching Brady Quinn play Denver.  He looks good.  He’s moving his team.  OTOH, the Broncos D looks weak.  Let’s keep that in mind when we look at the preseason.

Why are Folk’s kicks missing the endzone? He’s supposedly got a booming leg? Inside the 5? That sounds average.

And what’s up with the Cowboy’s first team not butchering-up the Texans? Pittiful. I guess it reflects today’s NFL, but really. Are we just one of the many teams out there competing? Regular joes? I don’t like it.

It could very well be beneficial to have lost this game. Overconfedence kills. The Boys just beat 2 quality teams in a row, and to go undefeated in the pre season might get them to thinking too highly of themselves. Especia;;y the rookies. Did Romo or anybody else get a game check for tonight’s game? No.

Did it count in the standings? No.

Will anybody care about this game in a few days? No.

We’re all probably overvaluing the first two games and over emphasizing the bad aspects of tonight’s game.

They’re probably ready to play for real right now. But it’s good that they have time to get Glenn and Newman, Fasano, Hoyte and perhaps Ellis healthy. They need all these guys.

They took their pants down tonight and showed their ass.

  44. 44
    vandy on August 25th, 2007 10:48 pm

I will admit, I did not watch the game, but I will make comments as to 3 things that worry me from the stat sheet:

    1) penalties - the Cowboys got several penalties with the 1st string including 2 false starts and a personal foul on anthony henry

    2) run defense - this is the weakness on the Phillips 3-4, near as I can see. And in this situation, they gave up an average of 5.5 yards per carry, much of which was on the first team

    3) bad choices by qb - Tony Romo threw 2 picks and brad johnson threw 1. Regardless of the Houston D (good or bad), this is way too much.

    4) poor special teams - dallas continues to have difficulty on punt and kick returns, giving up a TD tonight. There are few things which demoralize a team more than that.

All in all, the final score is irrelevant, I would have just liked to have seen a box score which reflected a better 1st team performance.

Having said that, last year, Indy went 1-2 in preseason and their starting running backs averaged 2.7 yards (Rhodes) and 1.5 yards (Addai) per carry.

I just finally saw a few highlights on ESPN, and I know it’s the preseason but I’m just going to get this out of the way before the season starts so I hope he proves me wrong.

    Roy Williams sucks.

He is not a leader, not a tackler, can’t cover, is lazy and I don’t like him. He has a handful of highlight reel hits a year and other than that he is a liability. I’m sick of him. He’s living off the hype and he’s never really lived up to it. I’m sick of it Roy!!! Sick of it.

    b lee,

    1. McQuistan is on the wedge. Two kickoffs were squibbed short to him and he fielded them, ran as far as he could and fell down. Got to the 35 both times.

    2. A rocket pitch is a play where you fake a dive to the fullback and pitch to the tailback who is running wide. You try to freeze a real aggressive DE. Washington ran it at Greg Ellis last year for a Clinton Portis TD in the DC game.

    3. Is Burnett a bad player? Then you keep him. That type of thinking is what led Dallas to ditch Jimmy Smith.

  54. 54
    McLovin on August 26th, 2007 2:13 am

Raf - I think I’m speaking for most of us frustrated fans when I say: we understand… its preseason… final score means nothing. We get it.

BUT we’re still frustrated over the apparent, lack-luster performance when our starters played for most of 3 quarters (? I don’t know if that’s true. Some did. Some probably didn’t. I just listened to the game.)

Houston’s first team (a probably bottom 1/3 team this coming year) shouldn’t be handing-it to a Superbowl contender.

Perhaps I’m over-dramatization —— specially considering we gave them 7 pts. But still… back-to-back O line penalties during a drive? Interceptions? Poor tackling? Little room to run? There’s plenty to be upset about other than the final score.

  55. 55
    burmafrd on August 26th, 2007 6:25 am

We came in overconfident, stank it up and got beat. What is with all the hysteria? We were also missing two vital starters in TNew and Glenn. We pretty much now know that our other CBs truly are JAGS.

cowboy bert on August 26th, 2007 8:16 am

What was John McKay’s old line? Something like, “We didn’t block well, but we made up for it by not tackling well.”

Dallas lost this game the way they won last week’s. Houston wanted it more from the opening whistle, just like Dallas wanted last week’s more than Denver.

Putting all of that aside, what stood out was how poor the Dallas CB play is. All of these late-round CBs might get it in a Tampa 2, but they can’t cover their own grandmothers. I think we see the hole in the team already and know what they will have to draft next year.

For those arguing McFadden vs a CB, think how different last night’s game would have been if one player–Dunta Robinson–had switched sides. There would be a lot less gnashing of teeth.

The only time I dont enjoy this blog is after a loss. The haters and the chickenlittles come out in droves and predict the end of the world. We suck,Wade sucks, Roy sucks, scheme sucks, refs suck, line sucks, Jerry sucks, ect… Its a preseason loss, get over it. We are not going to play flawless in the preseason and we wont play 16 flawless games. I kinda of like an ugly preseason loss to refocus everyone. We do have alot of high character guys on this team and they will not be happy with their performances. These guys will come back to work ashamed and will go to work. We have a new scheme and a relatively inexperienced QB. Expect at least 2 more stinkers like this in the regular season. In case anyone forgets the goal of this team is to make the playoffs and on the way continue to learn and grow. Hopefully all of this comes together in late December and January. I want to enter the last part of the season peaking and not limping like last year.

    Chumdawg,
Concerning your post #43, I take it you were unhappy that Jerry traded our 1st round pick to the Browns, because you wanted Brady Quinn.

You won’t enjoy the next few years then, because Romo IS the QB. Come in off the ledge man, ’cause it’s only pre-season. I’ll get on the ledge with you when the season’s underway, and believe me, there will be days that I’ll be on that ledge!

I like Squidlo’s idea in post #60, that if McFadden is there when we pick, take him, then take a corner with the 2nd 1st round pick. We NEED CB help!

  64. 64
    ManTab on August 26th, 2007 11:25 am

Im watching the game now. Seems to me Houston was throwing those quick short routes (flats, slants) and we couldn’t cover….that’s all. O-Line played bad also…no room to run, penalties. This is a bad feeling and it’s only pre-season….I hope e go 16-0….

  65. 65
Rafael Vela on August 26th, 2007 11:29 am

I’m with Squidlo on this one. The overreaction in both directions during the games can be upsetting. When Dallas wins, they’re the greatest thing since sliced bread. When they lose, every thing about then sucks and everybody needs to be cut or lined up in front of a firing squad.

Here’s a test — how many games do you think Dallas will win this year? Ten? If you predict 10-6, or 11-5 that means they’re going to lose five or six games.

Now, are you going to act shocked when they happen to lose some of those games YOU predicted they would lose?

Because some of the rationalizations I see during the season show me that some people really do believe the Cowboys are always, ALWAYS

  66. 66
Rafael Vela on August 26th, 2007 11:29 am

I understand that theads serve as a form of therapy and let people vent steam when things don’t go well (and it’s a stone cold fact that we get far more comments when the Cowboys lose than when they win. A lot more.) Still, this lack of perspective, especially after losses, makes me want to leave for a couple of days.

I’m not blaming anybody here, cause there was nothing last night that was close to the extreme, but reading “this is the worst game since the Campo era” did bring back some bad blog memories.

    ryanA on August 26th, 2007 11:43 am

I was at the game setting 3rd row behind the Dallas bench. Did not see a lot of emotion from the players. Roy Williams looked out of it even before the game started. Not impressed with our corners at all. They are very small (besides Henry). Can’t wait for Newman to get back. I agree with Raf that we should take best corner on the board in first round next year. Spencer looked lost and I think it will take him a while before he feels comfortable playing OLB. Our OL is huge (Adams actually looks bigger than Davis up close). Houston was hell bent on stoppoing the run and that’s where we really miss Terry Glen. Not sure Crayton or Hurd are ready to start full time. Our coverage units look bad. Need to get this fixed ASAP. Houston will have one of the better return units in the league. Jacoby Jones looks good. Will not be suprised at all if we pick up a few corners when cuts are made (get well Newman). I also noticed some confusion with the coaching staff during the game. I saw Wade yell at Stewert several time and even pushed him away to get in front of the D-line in the 2nd quarter. This is a big game for Houston Texans fans. Most Dallas fans don’t understand this. It’s almost like the Super Bowl for them. Look for CB and WR in the first round in next years draft. Any word on Burnett?

  69. 69
    onepaniolo on August 26th, 2007 12:00 pm

Jacoby Jones looked great in this game. He’s going to be a scary return man for the Texans.

It was funny to hear Spencer Tillman, the Texans’ broadcaster compare Ahman Green to the great Eric Dickerson! LOL

Yes, we definitely need some CB help. I wonder if “Prime Time” can still cover? Please Newman, stay healthy this year!

    ryanA,
Good point about this being Houston’s Superbowl. They definatly played beyond thier normal level. And we were just off. Momentum is a big factor in any game, and I wasn’t at all suprised that Houston had it last night. and I’m not all broken up about it. Like some of us have said, its good to get this stuff out in pre season, and have some things to work on.

I just finished watching the first half and not bad. I was expecting a team that played flat and that wasn’t the case. I was expecting that most of the guys played poorly and wasn’t true either.

Mental errors handcuffed the offense on the first series. The defense played fine except for Roy Williams not rapping up and giving up a big run. The defense liked tired on the last drive of the half.

The kick and punt coverage is bad. It is what is, but too many guys are playing special teams in the first half that have not chance of making this team.

The Texans made more plays then the Cowboys, but an evenly played half overall.

    MUHAHAHAHAHA! LMAO! Thanks Ridgelake!

Not sure about silver, Raf, I just we’re onto something here with them jerseys …. every since it was pointed out in last year’s threads I have been doing some real hard conspiracy theorizing … (is that a word?…oh well, I digress)

Perhaps silver jerseys with the throwback helmets … hmmm…
We sould see wheere this jersey observation takes us in the season to come.

I did notice that in the loss to Seattle last season, the Boys were in white … BUT … we out played the chickens and got beat with a conspicuously slick ball that the seattle ball boy supplied … hmmm.

Seems like the blue jerseys are on whenever the team looks asleep at the bench. ryana pointed out that he was there and they looked limp. Could a psych eval on the color blue be needed here?
