Jessica Simpson = Memo Paris?

Posted: December 16, 2007 @ 6:26 pm

I warned you guys a letdown was coming. And I predicted it would come against the Eagles. I hate being right, but well, there it is.

Is Jessica Simpson the football version of Memo Paris, the blonde bombshell who was kryptonite to Roy Hobbs’ Wonderboy in The Natural?

Tony Romo had his worst game of the career. He injured his throwing thumb, but was missing open guys badly before the hand injury. And his lousy day wiped out a strong day by the Cowboys defense, which showed its best rush of the year.

The bigger concern now is Andre Gurode’s left knee, which was injured early in the second half. Test results are pending. Carolina can be beaten, but the Eagles got good interior pressure after Cory Proctor replaced Gurode. Center is the one offensive line position where Dallas is the weakest. I’ve heard good things about Proctor but Dallas’ playoff chances go down if he’s got to man the pivot the rest of the year.

Everybody’s due a bad day at the office, but if Romo plays like this next week, Jessica Simpson will become the most hated celebrity significant other since Yoko Ono.

Romo was why we lost. Simple as that. I don’t care who jumps all over me, I’m worried. He was only strong for 4 minutes during the Lions game, and that was mostly because he had Witten and played a poor defense. I’m afraid defenses have figured out how to shut him down.

    It’s December again, isn’t it?

The thing that worries me about this game was that Philly did not really play that well. There were plays there for the taking, but we could not execute.

Now, the Cowboys must win the final two games to keep home field and their both on the road.

    Hmmm.
maybe that december meltdown wasnt all on parcells after all.

On a day when GB simply rolled, dallas, we hope, will get the wake up call.

I guess there is some good news. With the seattle loss in carolina dallas is the #2 seed at a minimum, but the way GB is playing dallas must win out to be #1. Seeing this mess today, I’ll be happy with the bye and a chance to get healthy.

I think we can beat the panthers but anyone think washington will lay down for romo and the boys in week 17?

    me neither.

The loss itself, doesn’t worry me too much. What worries me, is the fact that it’s at home, and it is December.

Another worry, is how well Green Bay is playing. Never mind that we beat them last month. It’s December, and only two more games, before it’s win or go home time.

The biggest worry, are the injuries to Gurode, Canty, Watkins, Fasano and Romo. Not a good way to go into the playoffs.

    Oh, BTW

After two bad games, how’s T.O.’s psyche?

    6-0 on the road.

Home field is NOT an advantage for the Cowboys.

This was a big division matchup. While I am disappointed like us all, the Cowboys need to focus on the last two games.

Despite Romo’s poor performance, he is still the one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. As he has shown us in the past, he has great ability to come back from hardship.

Let’s not forget that there were questions as to whether we should have drafted Brady Quinn!

Let’s also not forget that the number 1 question coming into this week was the Cowboys defense. Any questions?

The reason the Eagles played poorly was the Cowboys D. Did anybody see how many knock-downs and pressures we put on Dovan McNabb?

I am confident the Cowboys come back and Tony Romo, who has a penchant for learning from his mistakes, will be at the forefront of correcting this.

The main lesson I believe this teaches the Cowboys is that, despite how good their passing game usually is, they must continue to run the ball, something they apparently forgot about in the 2nd half.

Jason Garrett maybe thinking about the Falcons opening and not the game plan. The last two weeks, TO has been taken out of the game and the only option has been Witten. That is a bad sign.

  16. 16
    DRG6976 on December 16th, 2007 6:51 pm

    Slide,
True Romo was the main reason we lost the game, however there is no reason to panic. It has been a while since Romo has played a bad game. Buffalo was him being stubborn not off, and the Detroit game show how cerebral he has become, again not off. He was due, pure and simple. I am somewhat concerned about his thumb however, but unless it is serious (which I doubt) he should be fine. The Eagles showed just how important Andre Gurode is to us, and that could be devastating. Even Romo, as elusive and accurate on the run as he is needs time and the effect on our mediocre running attack could put more pressure on Romo than he has the maturity to handle. IE: Detroit last year.

If the Lions LB had held onto Romo’s fumble in the last 2 min’s of that drive then the Cowboys are on a 2 game losing streak. I know Qb’s get to much credit and take to much blame, but the lions share of this must lay at HIS feet. That is not a very good Philly team they lost to today.

Let me just point out, that this is not really that uncommon.
Look at these loses by 90’s SB or almost SB Cowboys teams toward the end of the season.

    92-Washington Redskins 17-20 15th game
    93-Miami Dolphins 14-16 13th game
    94-Cleveland Browns 14-19 15th game
    95-Washington Redskins 17-24 14th game, Philadelphia Eagles 17-20 15th game

I was expecting this. It still stings some though, especially since I thought it would happen on the road.

Anybody realize that last year’s Xmas day Eagles’ game was the one that Carrie Underwood was at? And Romo played poorly and we got stomped? Seems like Jessica was this year’s version. Tony needs to stop inviting these women to games.

Also, Garrett completely abandoned the run in the 4th quarter, even though we were only down by 4. Seemed strange, especially when your QB is shaky and has a banged-up hand.

This loss doesn’t really mean much, but the Canty and Gurode injuries are terrifying. Not a good day.

(posts #5 and #23) DRG I agree that there’s no reason to panic at this point…be concerned and take serious steps to “right the ship”, but not time for the panic button yet…

slide - i understand your concern, but maybe this will provide a little uplift…
“I’m afraid defenses have figured out how to shut him down” - as some others pointed out, I don’t think the Eagles figured out how to shut Romo down…what i did see however was Romo missing on a lot of throws that he has hit all season long…and in come cases missing badly…and also making some bad decisions. We just have to trust that this is the exception and not the rule…(i think his play in the previous 13 games should prove that). In short, I really think that Romo did it to himself much more than the Eagles or Lions did.

Assuming this thumb injury isn’t too serious (and we better pray that it’s not or we’re in trouble), let’s see if Romo and the boys can get back on track next week. We’re still a VERY legitimate threat in the playoffs and any team that doesn’t think that is asking for trouble.

Kudos to the D for stepping up and playing well when put in tough positions time after time after time. Demarcus Ware was an absolute beast.

Romo: What the hell was that? Staying up too late banging celebreties? Some of those picks made me wonder what the heck you were seeing.

Garrett: Why abandon the run? It was getting good yards regularly. And oh, remember what play-action passes are?

TO: Glad you’re maturing and not causing obvious scens. But How habout catching the ball? Is that too much to ask?

Kickoff D: Umm, can we stop the other team inside the 30? At least we havent given up a TD recently. But the field position give up was horrible.

Ugh. Hopefully we can take care of business Saturday night.

  53. 53
    golden83 on December 16th, 2007 9:12 pm

I was worried after that Detroit game. But that D line is scary. Who would have thought we could hold a team to 10 points and still lose? I love that D they earn their paycheck. So romo had a bad game (bad wrist) to go with the Buffalo game it happens. If T.O. would make an effort on some of these plays and not play dropsie…And #31 can take his pissy horse collar tackle and piss right off. Cut him. And Julius, I am sick of him and his 4 yard losses. He reminds me of european soccer with his one touch and down.
The only problem is like the year we had to go to N.Y. vs. Phil Simms after Leon Lett f’ed up Thanksgiving. That game went to O.T. with one arm Emmitt showing the pride. We have to go to Wash and stick it to them, Emmitt style.

I think it is tough pyschologically to stay up week after week. I think the Eagles would have been reasonably pumped for this one having officially handed over the crown.

Sounds like Romo’s thumb is just a bruise - hopefully that’s accurate - thumbs a bad injury for a QB.

AG and CC are a bit of worry though.

I think Center has just jumped up in the list of draft priorities. An o-line is only as good as its weakest link…

The collapse is on it’s way. T.O. will have his melt down and Dallas will beat a bad Carolina team 10-7 that’s only if the defense can score. But Washington will smack us up one side and down the other. 27-7. And why isn’t Miles Austin back on kickoffs was he doing too well? I hope I’m wrong but we have lost Gurode our anchor on the line it’s going to be a long 2 weeks. But the good thing we won’t need to go to Lambeau. Minn., Tampa, Seattle, or NY, will make sure of that. I’m tired of these one and done playoffs. Romo’s no Aikman we have no Smith and when the chips are down we had no heart. That had to be the most lackluster performance from Dallas in 2 years. Now we get to look at Pete Prisco put us down around 15th best team in the league I’m sure Clev. and Jax will jump up ahead of us. Oh and SD. What did they do to Det. 51-14 come on. Dallas is done.

I really do think you have something here Raul.

Does anyone remember last when Romo started his slide?

It was the game that Carrie Underwood came to the game. He was seen dating her at that time. I thought it then about Carrie.

It is very peculiar that the same thing is happening now. Romo needs to get his head out of Simpson and back into the NFL.

Well, it’s always tough to beat divisional rivals, even when they’re having bad seasons, especially the second time around.
The (fudge)Packers have certainly looked good since playing us, but they spanked the Raiders and Rams the past two weeks.
The Cowboys are certainly in a funk, but it’s time for the guys to do some self-reflection tonight. I wouldn’t worry too much about Romo, he seems like a smart dude, so I think he’ll bounce back. He might want to stop going for it all though and just take a short gain every now and then. I think that’s what Favre had problems with in their game against us. Oh well, until Sat….

  87. 87

I’ll work on getting my head pulled out, Mike. Not sure why you had to bring Raul into it… I don’t see his name in this thread at all. (Hard to see with my head in my arse and all though).

    gentlemen,

tongue in cheek on the Memo Paris stuff. The Cowboys offense sucked today. Romo was awful. You might as well find some humor in it.

Still, when Romo was at the half I was ready to write a headline saying he had “Staubach Syndrome.”

For you younger hands who didn’t see him live, know that many of Roger Staubach’s fantastic comebacks came after he had sucked out loud for 45-55 minutes and then bailed his team out.

I was prepared to see Romo do the same until he hurt his thumb.

They’re 12-2, matching the best Cowboys start ever.

I’m hardly ready to push any panic buttons.

  89. 89
    hmtyrant on December 16th, 2007 11:37 pm

“I’m hardly ready to push any panic buttons.”

    I totally agree with that.

I think it is even harder to take a loss when your team is really good. Thats why people want to push the panic button.

  90. 90
    jkdallas on December 16th, 2007 11:38 pm

And now, before Raf smites me, let me clarify my poor attempt at humor:

    A. Tony Romo has been playing football at a very high level for a long time. Since Junior High maybe?

    B. In that time, he has had the opportunity to entertain lots of nice companions. I bet the line has generally formed to the left for him if he wanted.

    C. I find it absurd to think that suddenly Romo has lost focus on his career because of a hot girl (girls?). I think Raf was being tougue-in-cheek as well.

  91. 91
Tim Wilson on December 16th, 2007 11:40 pm

Yeah, my biggest question on today’s loss is still with Garrett, not TO or Romo or anybody else. Romo didn’t have it today. Okay, that’s cool, that’ll happen sometimes. But why did Garrett continue to wing it at that point? We were down 4 points, not 24– RUN THE BALL! It seemed like Garrett may have been too stubborn or too arrogant in points…I am sure we had WRs open at times, and I’m sure he believed we could win by passing, but after a certain point, it wasn’t happening. Just let it go.

I’d like to see us be a team that can win even when it’s aerial attack is not clicking. Our O-Line is massive and our RBs are solid– there is no reason we should not be able to establish a physical, ground-based identity when it is required.

(I’m sure tomorrow Raf will lay out all the reasons that I am wrong, that Redball called an excellent game, and that Romo was just missing open WRs. But it was certainly frustrating to watch. MB3 with 7 caries???)

  94. 94
    jkdallas on December 16th, 2007 11:44 pm

Thought the same, Tim. On the chat we were calling for run, screen, check down pass. They must have been taking that away, but I didn’t see the box loaded much.

That said, often the plays were there and not made. Red-ball can olnly do so much

Deion Sanders called this when Dallas allowed GB to hang with them once Favre was injured, the Cowboys lacked a killer instinct.

Rafael says a letdown was coming. I see it a little differently, agreeing more with Deion. This team lacks what Championship caliber teams have. I see it with the Dallas Mavericks as well and called the Heats upset of them a couple of years ago in their Championship Series.

The importance of this game cannot be overstated. Win this game and your easiest remaining game next week and you effectively get a couple weeks off. Yet Dallas didn’t execute, much like last week and are FORTUNATE to be 1-1.

The contrast to Green Bay is striking. I am predicting right now, No Super Bowl this year.

  96. 96
    jkdallas on December 17th, 2007 12:00 am

    TL-
See your point, but can also see it another way:

Last 2 weeks are a wake up call. A kick in the butt, and now start rolling into the playoffs. Remember a loss to Chicago (was it 1992 or 93?) when Jimmy cut a spare running back after a fumble. No losses after that. Lightning in a bottle.

  97. 97
    jkdallas on December 17th, 2007 12:06 am

Edit: It was a win over Chicago, but Jimmy cut Curvin Richards.

    JK,

    WAKE-UP CALL???????

They don’t understand the importance of winning this game?

They need a WAKE-UP CALL to finally get it through their heads that they need to secure home-field advantage????????

As I say, Championship caliber teams don’t need WAKE-UP CALLS 2 weeks before the regular season ends. Not with this much at stake.

I have been closely following the Cowboys for some 40 years. I hope I am wrong, normally I am not when predicting their success or failure.

II. I never said I thought this was a championship caliber team. I just said a wake-up call might be in order. But it might be interesting to see how many 12-2 teams made it to the championship game after they lost game #14. I’ll check it.

(Can I say I’ve been supporting the Cowboys for 30 years or do I need to omit the college years and go with 26? Not sure I was a staunch fan from 1986-89)

TL (and all you other knee-jerk reactionists),

You guys amaze me. One bad day by the offense and you’re ready to declare this team dead.

You need to look at history. Heck, let’s just look at this week.

    Of the 12 playoff teams:
    - GB, Tampa, Indy, SD & Jax looked good. Granted, only SD & Jax actually played anyone, but I digress.

    - Pittsburgh looked wretched.

    - Patsies nearly lost to the 2nd worst team in the NFL. Brady had 140 total yds, 1 INT, 0 TDs.

    - NYG looked inept.

    - Seattle lost to the 4th string QB. No D, no O.

    - Cleveland scored 8 points total. Yes, it was snowing, but that was a very weak game.

Also keep in mind this Philly team nearly (should have) beaten NE 2 weeks ago. They have a very good (great?) defense.

And we still were driving to take the lead late in the 4th.

The D played good. ST was solid. No major injuries.

It could have been worse…OK, it couldn’t have. Maybe that’s the point. They WILL rebound from this.

    donnyposner on December 17th, 2007 1:20 am

Dallas is having a little slump but they can right the ship.

I think a very small part of it is the consistent winning. They expect to win and pull it out so they don’t give 110% but only 99% which is not enough in the NFL.

I think Jason Garrett is having a play calling slump as well. I have to wonder if they are holding things back for the playoffs….trying to keep some things from the tape. I do not know that but for two games now Garrett hasn’t moved TO around as much.

Romo wasn’t good today but he has been so superb this year, I cant say too much against him. As long as his hand is ok, he’ll be fine.

Getting TERRY GLEN back will be a huge boost if he’s able to play.

Crayton has had a few nice catches but we haven’t had a lot of production from the 2 and 3 WR’s since Craytons big 184yd 2TD day.

I do think we need to run a bit more and begin to get the ball out to 2-3 WR.

Garrett needs to review the tape of the past 2 games and determine what is different because the past two games we have been stoppable and prior we were not.

  106. 106
    Trey on December 17th, 2007 1:53 am

    Four reasons for this loss.

    1) Tony Romo was inaccurate. It happens to all QBs. I remember games where even Joe Montana was off. If he is equally off in the playoffs we won’t win, but he has been on for most of the season. This does not concern me

    2) 3 picks to 0…The cause was #1 above, but the fact remains that if you lose the turnover battle by more then one you tend to lose.

    3) Never established the run and did not even try in the second half. After all of those punts, they never even tried one series of three runs. This will not be long term either. I seriously doubt we go pass happy in the playoofs.

    4) Injuries made the comeback more difficult. Romo’s hand needs to be right and we need Gurode. We can live with a loss along the d-line due to the debth.

  107. 107
    Trey on December 17th, 2007 1:56 am

I too was happy to see our defense play a good game. I would have been much more worried if we had lost due to the defense being unable to stop Philly.

Philly has a good defense and not may teams have the personnel to run the defense we saw in this game. Got to have good cover corners and smart saftey play to go along with phisical front seven play. Nice scheme if you have all those pieces.

  108. 108
    dcfansinceiwasababy on December 17th, 2007 2:02 am

I’m also pumped about our defense, we must all see that as a very positive thing from this crappy game the offense had. Not a thing like last week.

But does anybody got a clue as to what the hell happened in Carolina today? I thought that the Seahawks were really playing well on offense. Don’t want to start sweating about the cats

Well, I did just read about that game on espn website. Strong winds played a role in the low scoring affair apparently. Holmgren was saying that they played “unlike themselves”, and they also didn’t run the ball hardly any and threw 41 times. Carolina has a very low ranked run defense though. Hmmm…

    skieley on December 17th, 2007 3:26 am

We just have to wait 5 days before we get the taste of this out of our mouths.

Carolina did not show me too much if we just play our game this is a win.

We were due a loss and it is not like the eagles D is chopped liver. They have played well for the past three weeks and the O finally did enought to get a Win. In the end it will be a good test to see how mentally tuff our guys are going to be these final two games.

The Giants and Seattle as well as the Steelers, and the Colts against the lowly raiders had bad games. it happens learn from it and move on.

Things like this happen as the teams in the middle of the pack begin to fight for there playoff lives. The level of play this time of the year picks up and the things that you were doing in october and november to win is not enough. Look at the tape, prepair the game plan practice the plan and then execute the plan make adjustments and kick Carolina’s A$$

  113. 113
    Luke. on December 17th, 2007 3:53 am

That was disappointing, but bad games happen in a full season. Gotta move on and put it back together for Carolina, and they will. 12-2 is still outstanding.

Here’s something much more positive – Ron Paul raised over $6 Million on the 16th of December the 234th anniversary of The Boston Tea Party! That’s a record. And it’s the people’s money not corporate america’s unlike the other media promoted big-government less-liberty “front-runners”.

This forth quarter has so far brought in over $18 million in donations for Dr Paul.

    Dave L on December 17th, 2007 6:21 am

Not making any excuses for Romo, but he has only started 24 games now. He’s going to have games like this every QB does. P Manning threw 6 Ints earlier this season.

We all know Jessica Simpson was at the game.

Romo’s dad was also at the game for the first time since his cancer surgery to accept an award @ halftime.

Give Jim Johnson some credit here. How the hell do you think they won all those nfc championships. Also Aikman had his crappy games and his best season was 13-3. As someone said in this thread how do you keep it up mentally all 16 games. Look N.E. just about choked to the Ravens who get beat by Miami.
Take 1994 we beat Houston 20-17 led by 3rd string qb Bucky Richardson. We beat the 3-13 Bengals 23-20 who i believe were led by Jeff Blake. bad games happen.
    HOW bout that D’Ware!!

  116. 116
    ElBerraco on December 17th, 2007 8:01 am

The pack finishes out with the bears and lions. The odds of them not being 14-2, I would guess, are very, very slim.

We finish out with Carolina and Skins.

Unless we relish the thought of going to Lambeau in January, I think it would be really helpful if the Skins lose to Minny next week. Otherwise, me no likey our chances of beating Wash in DC with them needing a win to get in the playoffs.

After seeing the pounding the lions took before and after our game (was it two 30 point+ losses), our 1-1 over the last two feels more and more like an 0-2. Add to that the craptacular performance we put in from about the late second quarter on against GB, and this Xmas is starting to feel a lot like recent Xmas pasts.

  117. 117
    joey2zs on December 17th, 2007 9:02 am

Jim Johnson? The Eagles had nothing to do with what happened yesterday other than their D Line beating blocks whenever Julius touched the ball. It’s incredible really how he gets engulfed behind the line consistently. I hold no blame towards him on this, but it doesn’t change the fact that it seems to happen with remarkable consistency.

Romo stunk yesterday, and I think so did Jason Garrett. That’s why the Cowboys lost. More accurate passing, less stupid gunslinging and showboating, more running plays, less forcing stupid passes… the Cowboys roll over the Eagles in a laugher.
What starlet did Garrett bring to the stadium, I wonder?

ElBarraco, there’s no guarantee the Cowboys will be going to lambeau. They have to beat good teams in the playoffs, not the Lions, Eagles and Favre-less Packers.

Those of us with more critical eyes, less cheerleaders than cynics, have been seeing this decline and have been commenting on it. It’s not so impossible now that we’re watching a team on an inexplicable decline.
There weren’t any killer penalties yesterday, just a general disfunction and lethargy on offense. I find it distressing. Hopefully a bye will give their bodies and minds some rest, and hopefully that’s what’s needed.

Gawd. On today’s Colin Cowherd show (he’s an ESPN radio douche bag) his daily straw man discussion is Jessica Simpson being in the stadium. “Let me tell you this, you’d never see Tom Brady invite his bimbo to the game.” Oh really, les douche bag? And that means precisely… what, exactly??
ya see, he makes exaggerated claims in order to incite response. The rhetorical conceit of setting up a straw man argument is SOOOOO overdone on talk radio, and speaks to a total and complete lack of talent or effort - it also means your audience is has head injuries or is from the midwest.

Interesting fact, ‘Cowherd’ is a Polish word meaning: a stream of liquid or air applied to a part or cavity of the body in order to cleanse or medicate.
