I’m looking forward to seeing some of the guys playing that don’t usually get to much playing time.

I am also wondering which guys will be resigned and which ones from other teams will be brought in (signed) before the draft. I’d like to think Jerry will try to do as much as he can without breaking the bank before the draft. Hamlin worked out really well as did Bigg.

Its a bummer that Watkins is out - I would have liked to see him start and see what he could do.

    Be interested to see:
    > how JJ goes with a bigger load, he is playing for a big contract (with another team)
    > how our non-starter linemen go, particularly Free
    > how BC goes (assuming he gets decent time)
    > and of course how TG looks

Don’t forget Carpenter. I’d like to think he wasn’t a first round bust but how can you tell if he doesn’t make it to the field?

I’m watching the Pats last night, and the more I watched, the more irritated I got at the contract that Jerry gave Patrick Crayton.

This is the spot in which the Pats separate themselves from us. Wes Welker is the kind of complimentary WR that makes a a great offense into a record setting offense. He killed us on 3rd downs when we played them. He’s almost imposssible to cover in the slot, and he’s always open. Teams that try to take away Moss get killed in the middle of the field because you can’t double Moss and cover Welker and Watson in the middle.

Contrast with our team, and I really feel like defenses only really have to stop two weapons in the passing game and we start sputtering. Now I have no problem with Crayton returning as a 3rd WR. But with the money that was paid to this mediocre (at best) receiver…..it seems to me that we’re almost locked into this guy being a starter next year. I find this highly disppointing, when we could be one bold move away from having an offense as explosive as the Pats. Why did Jerry give Crayton starter money? I know the WR free agent class is pretty this this year, but the Pats actually traded for Welker. A little creativity would have been nice here. I think we’re stuck now. Unless we draft a stud WR, but they usually take a while to develop.

I just have a really hard time time with the fact that we overpaid so badly for the weak link in our offense. For the attention that Owens and Witten get, Crayton’s numbers are pretty pedestrian. On a bad team, he would be even worse. I really don’t get this one. I’m concerned with the kind of money that Jerry has been throwing around lately. I love Ratliff, but he overpaid there, also. We’re going to end up in salary cap hell again in a couple of years and we’ll have the wonderful Patrick Crayton and his 600 yards locked up at WR2, preventing a great offense from becoming truly historic.

We’re a great team but the Pats are better. You need to look no further than Crayton/Welker to understand why.

OK we all know the Patriots are a good team, but how much help are they going to get from the officials? We all saw the “phantum” pass interference call against the Ravens. Now, last night!! .. I am not one to cry over officiating, and I actually wanted the Pats to win, but I saw a bunch of calls that help decide last night’s game.

#1 - The Cory Webster “illegal contact” call. The Giant’s CB released on the N.E. receiver about 5-6 yards up field .. away from the play (which would have resulted in a sack). This is usually a call not made. 5 yards and a “change of possession” b/c it was 3rd and long.

#2 - How many times is Rodney Harrison going to hit and push players well after the whistle? I counted at least 3 times, and he was called for it once (late in the game). Harrison could have easily been flagged 2 more times for another 30 yards.

#3 - The Giant’s kickoff returner is hit late near the sidelines by Brandon Merriweather. The officials call a person foul against New York??? A clear swing of 30 yards. NFL Net replayed it, and there was clearly no foul against the G-men.

#4 - Vince Wilfork pokes his fingers through Brndon Jacobs face mask at his eyes. No call.

.. Ok the Pats are a good team, but are the NFL officials going to call a fair game? It will make me sick if this trend continues in the playoffs. These teams are battling hard and deserve a fair game.

Playmaker-I think Crayton signed a reasonable contract for a 3rd wide out. Granted he’s not Welker but he’s still very good, versatile and a great locker room guy. How can you knock Jerry for signing a young effective NT that can also play DE. He has improved as he has gotten on the field and can still get better. In fact he will probably push Ferguson off the roster next year. I just can’t fault Jerry for locking up young guys that will contribute as role players for years to come. We still have plenty of cap room for top shelf players.

    Playmaker,

You’ve got to be kidding me?? Right?? The guy is our #2 WR this year. He’s played well. We payed him #3 WR money. What the hell is there not to like?? Hell, he’s not even making twice what our punter is. He got the same signing bonus that David Givens got 2 or 3 years ago. How is that overpaying?? Jerry made two extremely cap friendly signings in Crayton and Ratliff and you’re ripping him for it?? Are you paying attention to what guys are making in FA these days?? Salaries increase every year. You can’t just tell a guy you’re going to pay him like it’s 2004 or something. This is 2007 and he’s getting paid like it??

Now you’re also complaining about Ratliff?? WTF does the guy have to do to get some frigging respect from some fans?? 7th round pick that’s starting and goes out and plays his ass off every damn snap, gets a cap friendly contract that rewards him and still allows us to go out and resign other players, but it’s still not good enough. Look, I get it. Some of you guys just hate Jerry so much that you’ll look for fault in everything, but do you really think Jerry doesn’t know what Rat and Crayton would be worth on the FA market?? Do you really think he overpaid for those two guys?? Look at what Washington paid Antwan Randle El. He’s the definition of 3rd WR and he got a $30 mill deal. Jerry actually saved us money. Come back in off the ledge.

As for Welker, of course everyone wants a Welker now. But who the heck said so before this season besides the Pats?? The Dolphins had him on the roster and basically gave him away to the Pats. Welker hadn’t proved anything in this league yet and the Pats, the almighty perfect Pats, gave him a $5.5 mill signing bonus. What’s so smart about that?? I wonder if they had fans ripping that signing?? I’m not taking anything away from Welker, but he’s succeeding because he’s the #3 WR. The guy is basically just a better version of Brandon Stokley. Got two excellent WR’s on the sides of him and he takes advantage of his opportunities. You put a healthy TG and TO on the side of Crayton, throw it as much as the Pats do, and watch how much production we get from Crayton.

  9. 9
    kameleon_o on December 30th, 2007 10:21 am

    Eric R.

I agree with that. I get real tired of hearing guys like Peter King talk about how classy the Pats are because they’ve won 3 SB’s and now they’re perfect for the regular season. As if that gives someone class. I’ve been saying all year that those guys are hitting out of bounds and playing dirty every chance they get but it doesn’t get looked at. Harrison’s got so much roid rage going on that he can’t stop himself. How many flags did he get last night??

I just heard on BSPN that Wilfork will probably be fined for trying to poke Jacob’s eye out. He won’t be suspended though since Jacobs didn’t get hurt. Imagine if Jacobs had done that to Brady?? What would have happened then?? To the NFL you don’t get suspended unless Jacobs is hurt and misses his team’s playoff game and the Giants lose. Then they’ll suspend Wilfor.

    Playmaker:

As alluded to above, Welker’s contract is 5 years at $18.1 million, which he signed in March.

Crayton got paid the money he did because he is one of the most sure-handed receivers in the league (especially when you take out the game in which he had a compounded dislocation of his finger and he dropped that touchdown pass).

I don’t like to talk about the next season for our team, especially when we are not even to the playoffs, yet, but there are a couple of FA receivers out there to possibly replace Terry Glenn, including speedster Devery Henderson out of New Orleans, who is certainly one guy who can stretch the defense. I think he ran a 4.3 second 40 in the combine.

Other free agent options out there include Bernard Berrian and Bryant Johnson.

  11. 11
    vandy on December 30th, 2007 10:29 am

Another Pats signing in the offseason was Donte Stallworth at 6 years, $32 million. His least expensive year is this year at $3.6 million (or about the average annual cost of Crayton’s contract).

  12. 12
    kameleon_o on December 30th, 2007 10:42 am

    vandy,

Good points. If anyone thinks Crayton got too much money, wait and see what’s thrown at guys after the season. Jerry SAVED us money.

Also, I like Berrian if Glenn is done. I think Berrian would fit right in with TO and Crayton. He’s a good WR and he’s got good game speed. I hadn’t even thought about Henderson and didn’t know he was going to be a FA. With his speed he’d be an even better choice.

Has anyone watched a lot of Michigan games?? That Manningham looked like the best WR in college last year but I haven’t heard much this year. Wonder if he could come in and be an impact type WR in the NFL??

  14. 14
    davidh on December 30th, 2007 11:35 am

One angle regarding today’s game I haven’t seen discussed at all is the revenge factor for Brad Johnson. He DESPISES Danni Snyder. You might recall that Snyder hand-picked loser Jeff George to usurp Johnson after Johnson had led the Redskins to an NFC East title and a playoff win (would have been two wins but for a bobbled FG snap - sound familiar?) in 1999. Johnson of course went on to win a SB with Tampa, but I have seen a couple games where he relished beating the Redskins, in 2003 with the Bucs in which he threw 4 TDs and last year’s opening game win with the Vikings. In fact, Johnson wore his old Redskins t-shirt to that postgame press conference as a giant “Eff You” to Snyder, quite funny I thought. Not saying Johnson will win the game necessarily today, but he does have motivation, even seven years after the fact.

Also, I think that Greg Ellis is seriously deserving of NFL Comeback Player of the Year, but my guess is that Randy Moss will get it. Moss of course wasn’t injured in 2006 but took the year off mentally.

  15. 15
    Keys80 on December 30th, 2007 11:39 am

    Eric

NE is classless. It starts with Belicheat and cascades down through the ranks. I believe RMoss might be the classiest player on NE, how much does that say about the rest of the team. Harrison’s antics are despicable and VWilfolk’s little eye poke ranks right up there with AHaynesworth’s Gurode attack. I’m sure I’m not the oldest fan here but you have to go back to the days of the Raiders of old to see such classless play.

  16. 16
    davidh on December 30th, 2007 11:43 am

And if I am gauging Brad Johnson’s feelings about Dan Snyder correctly, he would probably like nothing more but to inflict a near-fatal blow to the Redskins’ playoff chances today with a Cowboy victory.

as much as Welker appears to be a 2 or 3 reciver I think he is the number 1 reciever.

As he goes the Pats go. The Gmen hit on something last night putting Ross on him.

Brady goes to him on every 3rd and short. You stop him and the pats are stopped. That is how the eagles and ravens defended him. They also hit him the entire game. On runs and every chance they got those two teams hit him.

I would play Newman straight up on him the entire game. I would also have the LB chip him every chance he gets.

Stallworth is not going to beat you. Moss may,but when Brady is under pressure he goes to welker.

The best thing could be the Pats have to play Jax/SD nd then Indy.

Jax or SD’s defense will beat up the Pats.

The more I think about it, Chris Long is the perfect draft pick for Bill Parcells. Son of a HOF Player, smart player, hard worker, played for Al Groh who BP knows and trusts.
