Cowboys @ Redskins 2nd Half Thread

Posted: December 30, 2007 @ 4:49 pm

Why is anybody surprised that the Cowboys offense looks flat?  T.O.’s out.  Gurode’s out and Jason Witten has dropped every pass his way.   Tony Romo has shortarmed open receivers.

They’ve got nothing to play for and it shows.

Seattle, Tampa Bay, NYG all lost, Minnesota is down 14-3, everyone’s entering the playoffs on a low note save Green Bay perhaps.

    RParr,

You forgot Jacksonville, who also mailed it in. These games mean as much as preseason games.

Good coaching on the 2 challenges, and the end of the half (blown) opportunity.

execution on the O side is non exsistent. I hope to see a good half out of Johnson and Hurd.

My only reason to watch the second half is seeing B Johnson and T Johnson do something big.

Yep. You could tell the Patriots wanted that perfect record. It’ll be interesting to see if the Colts mail it in versus Tennessee tonight. If they do and Titans win, Cleveland misses the playoffs, which would be better for the 1st round pick, yes? Go Titans

I understand this game has no meaning, however, how about team pride, hatred for the foreskins, need I say more?

Let’s see what BJ has for his old team. I think Hurd could be his main man. Get Hurd and Tony Curtis out there and I think we have a game on our hands. The defense is playing satisfactory except for a couple laxisdasical (probably spelled that wrong) plays and poor tackling.

We can still win this one, but if not it’s not the end of the world. The had better come to play in a few weeks though. They can look nothing like today or they WILL lose!

    bushpilot on December 30th, 2007 5:03 pm

This game means NOTHING to them, and you can see that in their body language. Take Romo out, get through the game healthy, and get ready for a matchup in two weeks.

Some of you guys have me laughing at my computer screen, when I read some of the statements of pure hysteria.

Sheesh, some people posting here are out of control. You’d think this was Round 1 of the playoffs and several significant players on offense and defense aren’t playing. Wouldn’t mind winning this game at the expense of injuries. The weather is awful. The game is being played very sloppily. Get out of here with no injuries. All those teams R. Parr mentioned are playoff teams and lost, with the exception of Green Bay, who just lost an important game to Chicago the week prior. I’m not gonna put any emotional stock in this game and I’m not going to make any assessment of this team going into the playoffs because of this game.

What scares me, is the 2 week layoff. Remember, how well the the boys played after a 10 day layoff.

I know that this is a meaningless game for the Cowboys, but it looks like another December NOT to remember.

Let’s hope that this doesn’t carry over into January, as these things have a nasty way of doing. They haven’t exactly impressed us the last few games.

    Big question come January:

    Can they turn it on?

We’ll find out in two weeks.

I understand that they are mailing it in, but my lord, that was ugly. The defense doesn’t have anything to play for either, but they are at least showing up! Romo not sharp, which I can understand, but dropped passes, half routes, blown protestion.

If you are out there you go full speed, it is when you don’t that injuries can occur.

What upsets me is that NYG, who have nothing to gain yesterday, still played its ass off. Why must we settle for this mediocrity? NE didnt have to play the full game but did cuz they wanted to achieve something. We dont we want to achieve a 14-2 record?

Even though we have injured players and this game is meaningless, a team with a heart still shows up. It is a profession after all…its not like i skip a month of work because I worked hard for the previous 11. If we settle for this play, it could very well be one and done. Lets hope Dallas has something to show for the rest of the half.

Regarding the TV commentary about the Cowboys preserving their players, I think it far more important to get a win this game.

Without such a win, we go into a long two weeks with too many doubts, with no momentum and with no winning mentality.

It is such a mentality that has gotten us this far imho. It’s covered up a lot of defensive flaws and an offense that can’t run the ball even when the passing game is hot.

More important than ever now with Washington up 20-3

Yeah doesn’t look good. Brad is going to have to really turn it on.

Ball was exposed on that Randal El catch. Rookie mistakes.

If the offense starts scoring the “D” might start playing again. They basically have said “If the offense isn’t going to play, we ain’t either”.

    #20 looks like a 7th round pick….

Austin……you are only going to get so many chances. You need to catch the damn ball if you want to stay on this team.

No killer instinct + No heart = 1 and done. Very simple.

The only groove that the Cowboys have been in lately, is in the gutter at the bowling alley. That is not a good groove to be in. You can’t just expect to turn it on come play-off time.

The one thing that does bother me about today is Roy Williams non tackle on Clinton Portis TD.

Williams is not even an average player anymore.

Our defense was better with Davis replacing Williams. Davis made plays. He broke up two passes. I watched Davis make more plays in a single game than half a season for Williams.

His one advantage was playing the run and blowing people up BUT he can not even do that anymore.

I do not believe he will ever come back and play well. It’s simple. The guy has hit his head far too many times.

Maybe he needs anti depressants…..honestly, that may help.

Some will defend Roy but not anyone with knowledge or eyes that see reality.

I’d ask Brad Johnson to drop back and just lob passes directly to Laron Landry. Let them run it in for a TD. Again and Again.

Help them win. Make a joke out of the game.

Show Washington that they aren’t winning this game but Dallas is letting them have it.

Squash their happiness by making it a spectacle and a joke.

the only thing this game has taught me is that we shouldn’t overpay for Jacques Reeves. Probably not a problem anymore.

and if anyone out there is really scared of seeing the Redskins again in two weeks, you need to go buy a set of balls.

Good teams play good football. Consistently. I think it’s naive to think that in December this team is playing as good as its record might indicate. I imagine the concerned posters today are anxious about the Boys not just because of today’s game, but because of what we’ve seen over the last month. Several questions arise that we hope will be answered in the first playoff game, and don’t presume the Boys can’t answer them. However,
    1. The running game is not what it was earlier in the season, for whatever reasons; it’s as if we’ve switched teams with GBay.

    2. Defense is having trouble stopping the passing game, especially over the middle of the field — and that’s not just because TN isn’t playing today, though obviously that hurts greatly. (Think Roy Williams)

    3. Third down conversions by defenses on the upswing, Dallas 3rd down conversions on the downswing. Early in the season we had fantastic conversion percentages.

STill, you just know the coaches aren’t showing anything in this game that’s best saved for the playoffs, several star players aren’t in the game today, and you just feel like we’ll be ready for the first playoff game and play better then. I just don’t see Dallas playing like this in the postseason.

Probably the worse thing about todays loss is we get to stew about it for 2 weeks. The chicken littles with work themselves into a frenzy.

I knew I was in for a bad time when I heard the clucking and scratching as I sat down to my computer and I hadnt even turned it on yet. I hope you guys can remember that a new season starts next week and we have a QB who suffers from a bad case of short term memory loss.

Peter, we havent played our best ball in December but to use this game as proof or any other type of indicator is completely off base. We have absolutely nothing to play for. We dont want to get hurt. This hatred of Wash is a fan thing, not a player thing. They didnt grow up hard core Cowboy fans. They are playing like a team that has to have it and we are playing like a team that doesnt. Why does everyone seem suprized by this?!

    Squid,
I am not surprised because we have playe this bad for 4 weeks. What really bothers me is that if you’re not going to play to win, why do you play all your starters on deffense (except Newman) and Romo and Witten also?….It is stupid.

  148. 148
    Peter on December 30th, 2007 6:11 pm

    Squidlo,
I agree with you completely. I’m not saying it’s an indicator of the type of team we are — just that it raises questions about the team nonetheless. I’m simply arguing that good teams can’t normally hide their good play that easily, it just is evident regardless. (Not to mean that D isn’t a good team, but I’d like to see them “Look” like one even in a game like this).
In contrast to Dallas, for example, Greenbay today had nothing to play for, but looked good. I guess I’d like to believe a good team would still “look” good even when starters are out and the game is meaningless. Like I said earlier, I still expect us to perform well in the playoffs because I agree with you in principle — this game does mean everything to Washington and nothing to us.

    donnyposner on December 30th, 2007 6:25 pm

I think the only serious concern is to get the offense some practice which will be difficult considering TO injury.

They have all the talent but the timing should be down pat right now.

Glenn will be back for the first time this season and TO will probably play without any practice for 3 weeks.

Romo’s timing with his 2 primary receivers could be off just a bit. That can be the difference between TDs and INTs

Our offense should be unstoppable with Glenn back and a healthy TO but it could take a little while to get in sync.

Very bad time for TO to be injured. I wish Glenn had come back 3 weeks ago but se le ve.

I just hope that romo and Glenn will put in extra time over the next two weeks to get in sync.
