Saturday Playoff Open Thread

Posted: January 5, 2008 @ 3:49 pm

The Manchurian Cowboy:

In the Redskins’ locker room after their 35-14 loss to Seattle, kicker Shaun Suisham kept muttering, “Jerry Jones is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I’ve ever known in my life…”

You have to wonder if the former Cowboy was a Jones sleeper? Suisham’s miss of a short field goal early in the fourth quarter denied his team a 17-13 lead, three plays after the Redskins had recovered a bouncing kickoff on Seattle’s 18 yard line. Seattle was able to find their bearings and score 21 points in the final seven minutes.

The Seahawks now go to Green Bay. Dallas awaits the winner of the Giants/Bucs tilt. Washington goes home.

Somewhere, Jerry is holding a full deck of red queens and laughing.

    From previous thread,

Portis is stuffed going for 3rd and short. Very nice defensive play by Seattle.

You live in a city with NO sports history when you pull Jamie Moyer! out to get the crowd fired up!
    Ahhh-Sh Alexander didn’t fumble after all-go Hawks!
I’m sick of hearing about Gibbs and Taylor.
    Plus, they’re the Skins.

Looked like there may have been some holding on that TD…
Is a ref missing after that injury?

I can’t believe the mediots and all the others out there that think the redskins are going to do anything. This guy Collins is a career backup, there’s a reason for that.

I called Minnesota falling by the wayside because of their QB, when everyone in the media and elsewhere were on that bandwagon. I’ve been saying all week the same about the Skins. They’re going to get smoked by Seattle, and the mediots will look like they always do…..morons jumping on the newest best thing. :shoot:

I find myself rooting for a rematch with the Redskins even though I’ve been telling myself I want the Seahawks to win. I guess the Giants scare me a little more than the Redskins. I haven’t watched much of Tampa Bay all year, but I’m not too worried about them.

But the most important thing is to play well. If we do that we shouldn’t have a problem with anyone.

Okay the more I think about it, the more I do NOT want to play the skins again.

We won a very close game the first time we played them even with the 4 TD’s by TO.

We got killed by them in the season finale game.

The Skins are playing with inspiration for the fallen teammate.

Just doesn’t sit well with me.

I guess we will just have to rely on our Boys to get it done.

Suisham misses the FG. Could be huge for Seattle.

Collinsworth is on the “inspired” redskin storyline, like the rest of the mediots. You get the feeling he is trying to will them to winning, thereby perpetuating his and the other mediots fantasies.

  61. 61
    Loozeeana_Cowboy on January 5th, 2008 6:42 pm

Okinawa - i don’t know - i’ve always just thought of him as sort of a wormy little twit…normally i can take him or leave him

but on that one pass interference call against the seahawks…the replay in slo-mo is clearly showing the seahawks defender’s left hand never touching the redskins receiver, and as it’s happening you hear collinsworth saying something to the effect of “he grabs the receiver’s arm right there”

  62. 62
    bushpilot on January 5th, 2008 6:44 pm

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a QB “float” so many passes before. I’m amazed the game is even this close at this point. The Seahawks have missed several opportunities to intercept other floaters.

  63. 63
    bushpilot on January 5th, 2008 6:46 pm

    Laron Landry- Very Good
    Ken Hamlin - Good
    Roy Williams- Average
    Keith Davis- Average

Williams contract is holding the team hostage. The defense may honestly be a tiny bit better with Keith Davis playing SS.

Laron Landry was excellent in the playoff loss today.

  69. 69
    donnyposner on January 5th, 2008 6:56 pm

Seattle’s DB’s play very aggressively and seem to be right there in great coverage more times than not. Not every time but many many times.

Marcus Trufant is very good and the other guys seem to be doing a very good job.

Trufant is a top Free Agent cover corner along with Nnamdi Asomugha and Asante Samuel.

Does anyone think Jerry Jones will go after ANY top level Free Agents? Personally, I have no idea if we can considering all the in house guys and guys needing extensions coming up.

  70. 70
    bushpilot on January 5th, 2008 6:56 pm

sgt, yeah, can Collinsworth milk anymore from this tragedy? The cow is dry Cris, STFU!

Of course he just jumped over to the Seahawks bandwagon, and mentions the Cowboys playing poorly down the stretch, and possibly no TO, blah, blah, blah. In my mind, Collinsworth is nothing more than a cheap whore, what a sell out.

    kameleon_o on January 5th, 2008 7:09 pm

Did anyone notice that the Skins lost by 21 points? There’s that number again. I guess Sean Taylor really was on the field with the Skins. Only this time he was rooting for the Seahogs. Ahhh, isn’t it grand???

    :diewas:

  72. 72
    kameleon_o on January 5th, 2008 7:11 pm

I really doubt we could afford Trufant but I have read at least one report that said the Seahogs might just let him walk. I doubt it and especially after this game. We need to find out who the DB’s coach of the Seahogs is and hire him next year to replace Bowles.

Guys were talking about Jordy Nelson a couple of threads ago. To me, and to be honest, I only saw K-State play once against Mizzou and although I noticed him he didn’t really stand out that much to me, but Jordy Nelson is a perfect example of something I’ve been talking about for a few years. The difference between “game speed” and “combine speed”. Savvy football fans like we’ve got here know the difference but it always amazes me how there can be such a difference between what scouts get with a stop watch and what we see from these guys on the field. We all saw the YouTube link of that long TD catch by Nelson over Talib, one of the best CB’s in the nation. Did he look slow to anyone on that TD?? And yet I’ve already seen two scouting reports that have Nelson listed as running in the 4.6’s. They say he isn’t much of a deep threat. Here’s one scouting report:

I’m not one to gloat, but there was some seriously delusional skins fans around my area this week. It should be pretty quiet now.

And the news gets better for them, they’re well over the cap for next year, though they do have some draft picks for once.

Collins picked a heck of a time to meltdown. I was thinking suisam was having a good year too, but man, it took a nose dive for the skins after his miss.

OK, maybe we can argue the “defense wins championships” thing, but after watching that game, I’d at least say it sure as hell helps.

    And dallas has a defense.

    BTW fellas,
Just so you know how the local sportswriters work around here, they’re the opposite of the dallas writers (in that they have serious homer goggles).

I didnt read one article all week about how tough of a place seattle is to play in, about hasslebeck’s playoff experience, or about the serious seahawks defense. It was all like the following:

“The Seahawks are a pleasant 10-6 team from a weak division, but the Redskins should win this first-round battle for the simplest of all reasons. They’re just a better team…”

“For the past month, the Redskins have been playing stifling defense and getting high-level, interception-free quarterbacking — a winning playoff formula if there ever was one. The hardest part of the task ahead is reeling off three victories on foreign turf — Seattle, Dallas after that and then probably Green Bay. But the Redskins match up much better against the Seahawks than they did two years ago, largely because of Todd Collins’ play; and let’s not forget, they nearly won at Dallas and Green Bay earlier in the season.”

    And my favorite:

    “Dear Seahawks fans,
They’re back. The Redskins are returning to java town and this time with a quarterback. You have three days left in your season before worrying about the draft, free agency and minicamp.

Yes, that water on your cheeks won’t be raindrops for once. It’s called tears. Since Seahawks fans are a bunch of crybabies, you should recognize the look.”

Can you imagine a dallas sportswriter writing something like that last one to the people of NY or TB??

  88. 88
    jarhead on January 5th, 2008 8:04 pm

    bushpilot,
my theory is that the gints will lose tomorrow precisely b/c they blew their load against the patriots.

  89. 89
    kameleon_o on January 5th, 2008 8:04 pm

    Jarhead,

Yeah, I don’t think they’d have made the playoffs either with Campbell. I was as tired as anyone about the over the top crap regarding the Deadskins and their backup QB and their “magical” season, but there’s no doubt that if it wasn’t for Collins they wouldn’t have been there.

  90. 90

    kameleono,

thats the typical crap being fed to the skins faithful all week.

Whats worse is, THEY BUY IT. Its like a drug to these folks. They’re delusional about this stuff.

  92. 92
    bushpilot on January 5th, 2008 8:13 pm

jarhead, those are some good quotes…hehehe. Like I said before the game, this guy was a career backup QB. I guess in addition to your points about Seattle’s defense and the stadium with home field advantage, the writer’s really had their homer goggles on.

The playoffs are a different level, and he proved unable to play to that level. As I mentioned earlier, have you ever seen so many passes that floated out of a QB’s hand? Have a sup of coffee kind of air time. I thought for sure there would be even more INT’s

  93. 93
    CowboyMan on January 5th, 2008 8:14 pm

  95. 95
    kameleon_o on January 5th, 2008 8:16 pm

    jarhead,

That’s something I was thinking about too. Would it really be so hard for a DMN sportswriter to write something positive about the Cowboys?? As a group they’re the most obnoxious bunch of negative a**holes that have ever gotten together to write about sports. Not just the Cowboys but all Dallas area sports teams. Throw the Star-Tele into that grouping as well.

That jerk McMahon from the DMN blog wrote that his biggest problem with Wade Phillips is that he’s insecure. That he doesn’t need to keep reminding people that the Cowboys are 13-3 all the time. I beg to differ. The way the media acts it’s almost like we’re 5-11 again. They’ve refused to give our HC any respect for the job he’s done and have totally downgraded our accomplishments. Nothing exemplifies this further than Calvin Watkins and Goose. Watkins would pick the Cowboys to lose games based on the fact that he thought they’d go 9-7 and he didn’t want to deviate from that no matter how well they were playing. Then Goose would pick against the Cowboys based on the weather in the city they were playing. What a total group of jerks.

Interesting stat I heard the other day (dont remember the specifics)
Over the last few years, QBs making their first playoff start have only won 2 times (the losses are in the teens).

One of the winners was delhomme (against dallas in tuna’s first year).

    Cant remember the other one.

Good to know romo is not making his first playoff start.

    BTW,
J-ville up 21-7 on the steelers.

    Quick,

Which RB coming out this year is the most like Maurice Jones Drew? 98 yard kickoff. Tough inside running and now a long TD reception.

I want that guy’s clone as Marion’s running partner next year.

    CowboyMan, LMAO!!

I’m with you. I think our success in the playoffs is going to come down to how often we turn the ball over. Troy’s first Super Bowl he didn’t throw a single INT in the entire postseason. Romo just needs to do his thing. Avoid those stupid throws like Hasselback was making today. The ones where we’re all screaming “What they hell was he looking at there??” type of throws. Get up early then get up often.

The biggest problem we still have in football is that you can’t challenge penalties. There needs to be a way to over turn some of these blatant screw jobs. It doesn’t come anymore chickensh** than that. WR commits a facemask penalty on a DB and the DB gets flagged for it setting up a TD by the Squeelers.

    mlittle,

DeShaun Jackson will most likely be a top 15 pick. He will most likely run in the low 4.3s. They say he has been clocked at 4.2. Ginn went at #9.

Here is a name for you, and he plays opposite of your guy at Cal.

    LaVelle Hawkins 5-11 186 4.4

Hawkins stock is rising. He had a very nice year. He is being projected, at this point, as a 2nd or 3rd round pick. He is similar in size and athleticism to Mario Manningham of Michigan. Manningham says he is staying at Michigan. We shall see.

    larry,

Here are the top tackles according to NFL Draft Scout:

    1. Jake Long 6-7 315 Michigan
    2. Ryan Clady 6-6 316 Boise State
    3. Jeff Otah 6-6 340 Pittsburgh
    4. Chris Williams 6-6 315 Vanderbilt
    5. Sam Baker 6-6 315 USC

Williams didn’t give up a single sack in the SEC this year. If you wanted to go tackle, you have some options in round 1. The first four guys are projected to go in round 1 at this point. Baker is a 1-2 round
    projection.
