Draft Live Blog II

5:35 — The Giants end the 1st by picking S Kenny Phillips. Come on receivers, keep dropping.
5:29 — The Jets trade up to 30 and take TE Justin Keller. Unless the Giants forego a safety and pick a receiver, the wideouts will all be there starting round two. I’ll move to a new thread after New York picks.
Note II: Dallas trades up to pick 25 and takes CB Mike Jenkins. He was the last of the big four corners on their board. The Texans were sitting at pick 26 and were eyeing cornerbacks. The Cowboys must have feared Houston would have snagged him.
Note: It’s been known for some time that Tennessee wanted a running back. The next two picks after 22 show that Felix Jones would not have been around at 28. The Cowboys obviously love him more than the other backs. We’ll see if that love is justified.
4:50 — Tennessee selects Chris Johnson.
4:42 — The Steelers pick Rashard Mendenhall.
4:37 - The Cowboys select Felix Jones.
Note: Dallas is on the board. I heard earlier today they have a possible deal with Detroit at 28. With Jenkins, Mendenhall and the WRs on the board, might we see a trade here?
4:27 — Washington trades with Atlanta who picks Sam Baker.
Note: Mike Jenkins is still on the board, as is Rashard Mendenhall and the WRs. This improves Dallas’ chances of a trade down with 22.
4:19 — The Bucs take Aqib Talib.
4:11 — The Panthers jump way up and take Jeff Otah.

damn, 2nd
Wow, draft day obviously requires more bandwidth.
2nd!
wow its good to be back
4th LOL
the world is ours wow.jenkins jenkins jenkins!
Why are we always exceeding CPU quota?
Take the corner, then take best rb at 28 or trade down and stockpile. Kevin Smith anyone?
Crap, now we have too many choices!
What did I say? 1 for 1
I called it! Felix Jones!
It seems that it’s going to be Felix Jones.
Damm this is killing me not being able to log in.
Bluecheese, your right too many choice now.
Felix Jones. Dumb move. Coulda had Mendenhall.
felix jones is the choice
Shit.
Mendenhall > Jones
Bad move.
Ok. Crap. Now lets get Cason in round 2.
Felix Jones!
Just f___ me running.
STUPID!!!!
Brutal
Fighter:
Someone should keep you away from any sharp objects.
I can’t believe they take Jones over Mendenhall and left Jenkins on the board!
I don’t like it.
I would have rather had Mendenhall
Damm what a waste of of a pick. All that talent still on the board. I think I like him more than Mendenhall.
I guess they lied when they said Pacman would have no impact. Jenkins was a steal.
ugh. oh well i guess this could work out pretty well. damn lets just ignore corner why dont we. i guess anything could stilll happen.
Jones excels at running through holes. Too bad our oline doesn’t make those.
Arghh.
I didn’t think memdenhall would still be here thats why i figured on jones
YIKES! We passed Medenhall and Jenkins.
Crazy pick. We coulda easily had him at number 28. Jenkins is gone, Mendenhall is gone, Thomas is gone. We now gotta trade down at number 28. I hope Mendenhall is a bust, so we don’t look totally stupid.
Well I blew it… And so did JJ!
Bluecheese & others,
“Felix Jones. Dumb move. Coulda had Mendenhall.”
We already have a Mendenhall. Didn’t think MBIII was so hard to forget. We need a change of pace, quick back. Not a workhorse. We don’t need two workhorses.
im still hoping for a veteran WR
I don’t think so, Pittsburgh took Mendenhall and Tennessee, Houston and San Diego have RB high on their boards.
That our team took Jones ahead of Mendenhall talks high of their confidence on him.
it looks like my post did not hit. rafael, how much money do you need to increase bandwidth, go to training camp, etc. As supporters, we should get some sort of budget to be able to provide you with enough funding to overcome these bandwidth, etc. issues.
Felix Jones is a good pick.. now deal with it. I think JJ is thinking Cason is on par with Jenkins and the need at RB is more important since we are aquiring Pacman.
chris johnson gone to tenn..
texans will take jenkins…
no way that jones would have been there at 28
Wow, and Tennessee took Chris Johnson, I guess that they really wanted a RB with Jones skill set.
And who really cares that much about these group of WR’s?
I’m still hoping for a trade with #28 for a veteren WR.
I just heard that TN tied to trade up with Dallas to draft Felix Jones - TN was afraid that Pitt would draft Jones - I guess Jerry said no thanks.
I look for a trade down with pick 28 unless Jenkins is still on the board.
I am hoping we get WR Avery in round 2.
Only way this feels good for me is if Jenkins is there @ 28… I’ll “settle” for Sweed, though…
I’m all for Cason at cb. In fact, I think I’d prefer him.
I support the Felix Jones pick.
I wonder how high Thomas is on our board.
i dont know guys, mendenhall was still on the board..i’m ok with the pick but we had the CB i really wanted too..ah someone help me out here
Somebody tell me why I skipped golf for this?! It’s the freakin’ even numbered curse.
Maybe next year. I’m going to knock the shit out of some poor helpless balls.
Smack:
I am guessing that Jenkins is not the CB the Cowboys really want. I would guess it is somebody in the 2nd round. I think we will find out soon.
What a complete waste of the Cleveland trade. How the hell do you pass on Jenkins and Mendenhall to take Felix? I am so freaking pissed with Jerry right now.
What an abject disaster.
Im going to get on board but Im dissappointed. I hope that he can run between the tackles and doesnt punk out.
I wonder with the Felix pick and the Fasano trade that we are making bigger changes on our offense than I realized.
we have a trade
dallas trades with seattle!
Hey! We traded into this pick!
jenkins now
I’m with ya’ Ridge… FJ better knock my socks off!
BTW, the Steelers didn’t just pick Mendenhall, they nearly set a draft record; knocking over the commish making the pick.
HOLY S$%*!!! TRADE
i like it
who did they pick… WHO??
Felix Jones and Mike Jenkins, it’s a pretty good 1st Round…
BPA means Mendenhall should have been the pick.
Awful awful awful awful move.
Someone is going to get a steal of Mendenhall and Jenkins.
F. Jones would have been there at 28 with Mendenhall on the board. We could have gone Jenkins and then got Jones.
Fock me.
Trade? WR or CB?
We have the 25th.. and keep 28!!!
What did we give away?
jenkins yes!!!
there he is.. are we Happy?
Smack:
I was wrong. My apologies.
Oh yeah!! Jenkens
YES!!!!!!!! Jenkins!
given up a 5th and a 7th
hey at least we didnt draft a linebacker!!!!!…..finally!. What did we give up to move up three spots? Where’s the WR?
what did the Cowbpoys give up?
THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!!!! MIKE JENKINS!!!!!!!
NICE! whew.. okay.. we traded the 28th.. Jenkins is in the house..
Okay.. now we need the WR and Safety
hahaha!!! i live in houston and i know them texan fans at work are gonna be pissed!
Jenkins? Really? Yipeee! (see post 44) JJ, I love ya again!
They traded a 5th and a 7th to move up 2 slots. My math works.
Unless Henry moves over to safety..
how the hell did we keep the 28th?
we didnt
And now trading up for someone you could have had earlier!?
Y’all have fun. I’ll vent later.
Can they still pick up Phillips ?
That makes me feel better about the Jones pick, but I wish they had just gone CB at 25, taken their chances and kept the extra picks.
BPA means Mendenhall should have been the pick.
Awful awful awful awful move.
Someone is going to get a steal of Mendenhall and Jenkins.
F. Jones would have been there at 28 with Mendenhall on the board. We could have gone Jenkins and then got Jones.
Fock me.
Jenkins is a very good pick, at least there’s that.
they did not keep the 28th
I’m with Fighter on this - if you need to move up to take Jenkins, just take him at 22.
Tennessee would have taken Felix right after Pitt took Mendenhall. They knew what they were doing.
Wow, I guess JJ knows more than me I wanted Jenkins at the 22nd and would have felt ok about Felix at the 28th. We still got both. Cmon Squid its not about the pick but the haul.
Interesting, the team knew that Felix Jones wasn’t going to be there at 28th and they started trying to trade up to select Jenkins.
The front office probably knows more than what some seem to believe…
I like the fact that we addressed both RB and CB in the 1st round. Those were our greatest needs and we got two quality players. I’m not sure I would have traded up to get Jenkins; I would have preferred they traded down to get a guy like Cason and grab another pick in the process, but I can’t complain.
We did it!
Safety is next!!!
Chandus - you are right.
I just don’t love the Jones pick, that is my real issue.
We’re all confessin’ here…
Safety has to be next.
Some of y’all stop talking that crazy talk about Felix being a bad pick.
Can’t you see that we had the first in a run of RBs that followed?
Felix was Jason Garrett’s favorite over Mendenhall and speedy Johnson.
Maybe you’ll back off when you’ve seen we bagged Jenkins.
I think our crew knows what it’s doing (better than us).
Two top RBs went after our 22′nd pick. could we have aforded to wait for a rb until 28th pick?
Fighter the draft has just shown that Felix wouldnt have been there at 28. We got both picks. Im not worried about a 5th and a 7th. We really have done well in the first.
Mendanhall has some big concerns as well as Felix. Mendenhall couldnt beat out an undrafted free agent. Ask yourself wht the hell is up with that?
okay, check back in another 2 1/2 hours for pick #61.
What say you Cowboy fans?
possible wr’s
Eddie Royal
Jordy Nelson
Andre Caldwell
Mario Manningham
Early Doucet
Raf predicted we’d pick Felix Jones because our staff likes him, and he brings a great complimentary skill set to our offense. I don’t know enough about him to be thrilled, but it’s a huge compliment and commitment that we picked him when Mendenhall and Johnson were sitting in our lap.
He’ll be a bad ass kick returner and a good receiver out of the backfield.
Wisdom,
I agree with ya. I think Tennessee reached for Chris Johnson. I guess we sit a while now before we pick again.
What did we give up for Jenkins?
I’m digging our draft so far (if Barber signs). I guess no Roy Williams trade is going to happen.
Sfatey next? how about a WR????
Titans would’ve scooped up Felix in a heartbeat to compliment LinDale.
While Pitt was thrilled to get Mendenhall I’m sure, Tennessee was very disappointed to settle for Chris Johnson at 24. That is a reach.
I can’t wait to see what Felix the Cat can do for us!
Our 28th and a 5th and a 7th.
this saved the first. we all wanted jenkins and now we have him. i give the first round an A depending on what we gave up, hopefully its just our late 3rd. all we need is a wide out and nose tackle. great round…
And we were right to move up b/c SD probably would have taken Jenkins over Cason.
Safety Next!
Screw WR’s there are some many there we can get Eddie Royal in the third or 4th.
What did we goive up to move up?
possible wr’s
Eddie Royal
Jordy Nelson
Andre Caldwell
Mario Manningham
Early Doucet
I’d only draft a safety at #61 if we can move up to get Tyrell Johnson. He may be there at #61 but I really doubt it. This draft is not deep for safeties at all.
Felix is a talented guy and I think based on some of these moves that we are going to open up the offense a great bit. We all think Garrett is the genius wonder boy, Well here are some toys to play with.
captainc
a 5th and a 7th
Im batting 1 and a half out of 2. I thought we would get a safety at 28th but in my defense I never ever thought Jenkins would still be on the board. I would have certainly gone with him over T. Johnson.
yes yes yes! Good F’n job Jerra! my soul is at ease and hey looky there scout not one reciever taken yet? Imagine that. Thomas prolly goes to seattle.
Don’t forget that we still have a need at OL, TE and ILB.
We knew it would require a few reaches by other teams in the 15-21 range in order to get one of our top CB choices.
Baltimore needing to grab Flacco in the 1st, and Atlanta bending over to get Sam Baker made Jenkins possible for Dallas.
I am elated, as only Pecos can be elated. Yahooo!
wow is that 4 trojans?
Hopefully we don’t take any more projects like Stanback. Players, not projects.
Garrett had that toy to play with all last year and kept him in track pants.
this draft is really working out for us…lets get a receiver with that 3rd and we’re set.
Im ecstatic now if we can move up in the second or grab Jordy or Connor.
longest a draft has ever gone without a wr taken.ha!
This just goes to show that this draft is not a good draft for WR’s.
Not a WR taken yet
now im guessing Thomas goes to Ny
Torch, Thanks!
I want a Safety then Eddie Royal. Sorry Raf, Red Bryan can wait.
there will be a run on WR in the 2nd
no question
The fantasy-junkie in me gets obsessed with value. Mendenhall was ranked as high as 7 and in most cases not lower than 12th. To see him there and not snatch him made me temporarily nuts. I do think it is a credible argument that POSSIBLY Jones ends up better than Mendenhall. After all, he was only a one year starter and was below average up until then.
I am curious. Do you guys like Jenkins better than Cason? I am really conflicted on that one. I like Jenkins speed, but it is hard to argue with consistent performance in games. That is what I typically value the most, and that goes to Cason.
Wait for a WR!!!! Wait, Wait Wait!!!!
You can get one in the third or fourth.
Take a safety. Tyrell.
Kenny will be gone.
I’ve got no problem with either picks. We got one of the top 4 CBs and a 1st round caliber speed RB. Let’s see how the Jones/Mendenhall debate looks after 2 or 3 years. Outcomes of a draft can’t really be judged without a few years passing.
There are still no recievers off the board?
I bet johnson goes before Phillips at safety
Tighthead, You need to take a look a Cowboy History and you will see we are a franchise that has a very deep tradition of projects. We have done a good job of big hits. This is also one of our oldest traditions.
Don’t anybody else like Henry from Indiana? I hope he will be around at 61.
We could use depth at TE, ILB and NT.
Maybe we could make a deal with the Dolphins…
You mean Hardy from Indiana. I think he is a bit of a project and may not mature fast enough for our taste. But he is a physical beast.
We should move up in the second round for a WR
I don’t need a history lesson.
We need help at too many positions.
Darren Studstill was a great project, as was Kendall Watkins in the second round - the big TE we were going to move to G. He couldn’t even play TE. Darren Benson. The LB to FB experiments. Bucky Richardson at HB.
Thanks teach.
TE off the board before any WR, This draft is crazy.
great job jerry… With a team full of talent, our 6th and 7th rounders probably won’t make the team, so lets use those picks to trade up and get the guys we really want! I expect a trade in the second round for our 6th round pick and maybe our other 5th
Why move up for a WR we can get one in the 3rd or 4th. Let’s take the safety next. Phillips, Johnson or Morgan. My guess ithe G’s are about to take Phillips
Unless we are planning on jettisoning Hamlin after this year, I think we should turn our attention to LB or WR next. I think Safety may be farther down our list, since our CB lineup just became the best in the NFL this week.
I like the WRs in this group. I think many will make good players. I think its the fear of the bust.
Slim yeah I meant Hardy. I loved watching him last year. 6′ 9″.
Jake - you make a good point there.
Sadly, I go nuts for having lots of picks. It doesn’t really make sense, but I like to have more guys to get excited about, even if they are long shots.
we do not need a LB! we got rid of ayodele for a couple reasons! Let carpenter, and burnett prove they are who we drafted them to be. We have too many already. We still need a saftey, OL, WR, and possibly a qb to groom as a backup
Isn’t Hardy a 7-footer?
:-)
We need a LB to replace Zack in 1-2 years, and Carpenter won’t be on the team after 2008.
pecos - its year 3 for bobby, he played hurt most of last year. Lets give him a chance to prove himself, he was a 1st round pick ater all. He hasn’t gotten a real chance to prove himself. Maybe you’ll be eating your words next march
can we get sweed with our 2nd?
We may need someone to replace Zach after 1-2 games.
There goes kenny phillips, guess, tyrell johnson is left at safety
Jake, I would savor the chance to eat my words on my Bobby C prediction. I really like the guy, and hope he can break out, but I’m just sayin’…
tighthead-
you’re right, we do need someone to replace zach here pretty soon, but wouldn’t that be burnett or carpenter’s job? LB’s usually take 3 or 4 years to develop anyway. unless you’re a freak like ware or merriman.
No Wrs in 1st round. Has this ever happened before?
Safety might be out of the question.
hard pressed to see Tyrell Johnson there at #61..
No WR’s in the first round last happened in 1990
I would think Burnett jake. Not sure if Jacob Rogers is in the long term picture.
I kind of like Carpenter, but I don’t think he belongs in our system. He could do well as a 4-3 OLB.
Or whatever the name of that ILB is - got him confused with he who should not be mentioned.
Justin?
Now isn’t that wacky. Donnie Avery is the 1st WR selected in the 2008 draft (HOU). Wow.
Rams select Avery.
yeah justin,…. by the way a new thread has just been opened.
crazy.
Here goes the run on WR
Squid,
According to Tirico on espn, 1990 was the last year that no wideouts were taken in the first round.
