Draft Live Blog II

Posted: April 26, 2008 @ 4:12 pm

5:35 — The Giants end the 1st by picking S Kenny Phillips. Come on receivers, keep dropping.

5:29 — The Jets trade up to 30 and take TE Justin Keller. Unless the Giants forego a safety and pick a receiver, the wideouts will all be there starting round two. I’ll move to a new thread after New York picks.

Note II: Dallas trades up to pick 25 and takes CB Mike Jenkins. He was the last of the big four corners on their board. The Texans were sitting at pick 26 and were eyeing cornerbacks. The Cowboys must have feared Houston would have snagged him.

Note: It’s been known for some time that Tennessee wanted a running back. The next two picks after 22 show that Felix Jones would not have been around at 28. The Cowboys obviously love him more than the other backs. We’ll see if that love is justified.

4:50 — Tennessee selects Chris Johnson.

4:42 — The Steelers pick Rashard Mendenhall.

4:37 - The Cowboys select Felix Jones.

Note: Dallas is on the board. I heard earlier today they have a possible deal with Detroit at 28. With Jenkins, Mendenhall and the WRs on the board, might we see a trade here?

4:27 — Washington trades with Atlanta who picks Sam Baker.

Note: Mike Jenkins is still on the board, as is Rashard Mendenhall and the WRs. This improves Dallas’ chances of a trade down with 22.

4:19 — The Bucs take Aqib Talib.

4:11 — The Panthers jump way up and take Jeff Otah.

Damm what a waste of of a pick. All that talent still on the board. I think I like him more than Mendenhall.

I guess they lied when they said Pacman would have no impact. Jenkins was a steal.

Crazy pick. We coulda easily had him at number 28. Jenkins is gone, Mendenhall is gone, Thomas is gone. We now gotta trade down at number 28. I hope Mendenhall is a bust, so we don’t look totally stupid.

    Bluecheese & others,

“Felix Jones. Dumb move. Coulda had Mendenhall.”

We already have a Mendenhall. Didn’t think MBIII was so hard to forget. We need a change of pace, quick back. Not a workhorse. We don’t need two workhorses.

  35. 35
    Chandus on April 26th, 2008 4:49 pm

I don’t think so, Pittsburgh took Mendenhall and Tennessee, Houston and San Diego have RB high on their boards.

That our team took Jones ahead of Mendenhall talks high of their confidence on him.

  36. 36

it looks like my post did not hit. rafael, how much money do you need to increase bandwidth, go to training camp, etc. As supporters, we should get some sort of budget to be able to provide you with enough funding to overcome these bandwidth, etc. issues.

  37. 37
    torchinDefense on April 26th, 2008 4:50 pm

Felix Jones is a good pick.. now deal with it. I think JJ is thinking Cason is on par with Jenkins and the need at RB is more important since we are aquiring Pacman.

I just heard that TN tied to trade up with Dallas to draft Felix Jones - TN was afraid that Pitt would draft Jones - I guess Jerry said no thanks.

I look for a trade down with pick 28 unless Jenkins is still on the board.

I am hoping we get WR Avery in round 2.

  44. 44

I like the fact that we addressed both RB and CB in the 1st round. Those were our greatest needs and we got two quality players. I’m not sure I would have traded up to get Jenkins; I would have preferred they traded down to get a guy like Cason and grab another pick in the process, but I can’t complain.

Some of y’all stop talking that crazy talk about Felix being a bad pick.

Can’t you see that we had the first in a run of RBs that followed?

Felix was Jason Garrett’s favorite over Mendenhall and speedy Johnson.

Maybe you’ll back off when you’ve seen we bagged Jenkins.

I think our crew knows what it’s doing (better than us).

  95. 95

  96. 96

Fighter the draft has just shown that Felix wouldnt have been there at 28. We got both picks. Im not worried about a 5th and a 7th. We really have done well in the first.

Mendanhall has some big concerns as well as Felix. Mendenhall couldnt beat out an undrafted free agent. Ask yourself wht the hell is up with that?

Raf predicted we’d pick Felix Jones because our staff likes him, and he brings a great complimentary skill set to our offense. I don’t know enough about him to be thrilled, but it’s a huge compliment and commitment that we picked him when Mendenhall and Johnson were sitting in our lap.

He’ll be a bad ass kick returner and a good receiver out of the backfield.

We knew it would require a few reaches by other teams in the 15-21 range in order to get one of our top CB choices.

Baltimore needing to grab Flacco in the 1st, and Atlanta bending over to get Sam Baker made Jenkins possible for Dallas.

Hopefully we don’t take any more projects like Stanback. Players, not projects.

Garrett had that toy to play with all last year and kept him in track pants.

this draft is really working out for us…lets get a receiver with that 3rd and we’re set.

Im ecstatic now if we can move up in the second or grab Jordy or Connor.

longest a draft has ever gone without a wr taken.ha!

This just goes to show that this draft is not a good draft for WR’s.

    Not a WR taken yet

The fantasy-junkie in me gets obsessed with value. Mendenhall was ranked as high as 7 and in most cases not lower than 12th. To see him there and not snatch him made me temporarily nuts. I do think it is a credible argument that POSSIBLY Jones ends up better than Mendenhall. After all, he was only a one year starter and was below average up until then.

I am curious. Do you guys like Jenkins better than Cason? I am really conflicted on that one. I like Jenkins speed, but it is hard to argue with consistent performance in games. That is what I typically value the most, and that goes to Cason.

    CaptainComeback on April 26th, 2008 5:22 pm

Wait for a WR!!!! Wait, Wait Wait!!!!
You can get one in the third or fourth.

    Take a safety. Tyrell.

    Kenny will be gone.

    jman55 on April 26th, 2008 5:22 pm

I’ve got no problem with either picks. We got one of the top 4 CBs and a 1st round caliber speed RB. Let’s see how the Jones/Mendenhall debate looks after 2 or 3 years. Outcomes of a draft can’t really be judged without a few years passing.

I bet johnson goes before Phillips at safety

Tighthead, You need to take a look a Cowboy History and you will see we are a franchise that has a very deep tradition of projects. We have done a good job of big hits. This is also one of our oldest traditions.

Don’t anybody else like Henry from Indiana? I hope he will be around at 61.

  131. 131
    Tighthead on April 26th, 2008 5:25 pm

We could use depth at TE, ILB and NT.

Maybe we could make a deal with the Dolphins…

  132. 132
    pecos_slim on April 26th, 2008 5:27 pm

You mean Hardy from Indiana. I think he is a bit of a project and may not mature fast enough for our taste. But he is a physical beast.

  133. 133
    UnconventionalWisdom on April 26th, 2008 5:28 pm

We should move up in the second round for a WR

  134. 134
    Tighthead on April 26th, 2008 5:29 pm

    I don’t need a history lesson.

We need help at too many positions.

Darren Studstill was a great project, as was Kendall Watkins in the second round - the big TE we were going to move to G. He couldn’t even play TE. Darren Benson. The LB to FB experiments. Bucky Richardson at HB.

    Thanks teach.

TE off the board before any WR, This draft is crazy.

  136. 136
    jake on April 26th, 2008 5:30 pm

great job jerry… With a team full of talent, our 6th and 7th rounders probably won’t make the team, so lets use those picks to trade up and get the guys we really want! I expect a trade in the second round for our 6th round pick and maybe our other 5th

  137. 137
    CaptainComeback on April 26th, 2008 5:30 pm

Why move up for a WR we can get one in the 3rd or 4th. Let’s take the safety next. Phillips, Johnson or Morgan. My guess ithe G’s are about to take Phillips

  138. 138
    pecos_slim on April 26th, 2008 5:30 pm

Unless we are planning on jettisoning Hamlin after this year, I think we should turn our attention to LB or WR next. I think Safety may be farther down our list, since our CB lineup just became the best in the NFL this week.

  139. 139
    Squidlo97 on April 26th, 2008 5:30 pm

I like the WRs in this group. I think many will make good players. I think its the fear of the bust.

Slim yeah I meant Hardy. I loved watching him last year. 6′ 9″.

    Tighthead on April 26th, 2008 5:31 pm

Jake - you make a good point there.

Sadly, I go nuts for having lots of picks. It doesn’t really make sense, but I like to have more guys to get excited about, even if they are long shots.

  142. 142
    jake on April 26th, 2008 5:32 pm

we do not need a LB! we got rid of ayodele for a couple reasons! Let carpenter, and burnett prove they are who we drafted them to be. We have too many already. We still need a saftey, OL, WR, and possibly a qb to groom as a backup

  143. 143
    pecos_slim on April 26th, 2008 5:32 pm

    Isn’t Hardy a 7-footer?

    :-)

  144. 144
    pecos_slim on April 26th, 2008 5:33 pm

We need a LB to replace Zack in 1-2 years, and Carpenter won’t be on the team after 2008.

  145. 145
    jake on April 26th, 2008 5:34 pm

pecos - its year 3 for bobby, he played hurt most of last year. Lets give him a chance to prove himself, he was a 1st round pick ater all. He hasn’t gotten a real chance to prove himself. Maybe you’ll be eating your words next march

can we get sweed with our 2nd?

  147. 147

We may need someone to replace Zach after 1-2 games.

  148. 148

There goes kenny phillips, guess, tyrell johnson is left at safety

Jake, I would savor the chance to eat my words on my Bobby C prediction. I really like the guy, and hope he can break out, but I’m just sayin’…

  150. 150
    jake on April 26th, 2008 5:37 pm

    tighthead-
you’re right, we do need someone to replace zach here pretty soon, but wouldn’t that be burnett or carpenter’s job? LB’s usually take 3 or 4 years to develop anyway. unless you’re a freak like ware or merriman.

  151. 151
    Squidlo97 on April 26th, 2008 5:37 pm

No Wrs in 1st round. Has this ever happened before?

  152. 152
    torchinDefense on April 26th, 2008 5:37 pm

Safety might be out of the question.

hard pressed to see Tyrell Johnson there at #61..

  154. 154
    Tighthead on April 26th, 2008 5:40 pm

I would think Burnett jake. Not sure if Jacob Rogers is in the long term picture.

I kind of like Carpenter, but I don’t think he belongs in our system. He could do well as a 4-3 OLB.

  155. 155
    Tighthead on April 26th, 2008 5:42 pm

Or whatever the name of that ILB is - got him confused with he who should not be mentioned.

    Justin?
