7:46 — The Cowboys select Martellus Bennett. Thank you very much. I’m available for children’s parties and trips to Vegas.

7:42 — The Packers take CB Patrick Lee

The Cowboys are in the on-deck circle.

7:40 — The Colts finally make a pick — C Mike Pollack

7:34 — The Bucs take Dexter Jackson

7:27 — The Dolphins pick Chad Henne

7:24 — The Packers pick Brian Brohm. More proof that Brett Favre will not be coming back.

7:20 — The Ravens pick Ray Rice

7:16 — The Titans pick Jason Jones

7:10 — The Steelers pick Limas Sweed

Notes: Biggest smoke screen of the day — that Chad Henne and Brian Brohm were big time bait. Both are still on the board 52 picks in.

7:06 — Jacksonville trades up and gets Quentin Groves.

Top players available: Chad Henne, Jamaal Charles, Limas Sweed, DeSean Jackson, Brian Brohm, Quentin Groves, Malcolm Kelly, Tyrell Johnson, Fred Davis, Kevin Smith, Martellus Bennett, Dan Connor, Anthony Collins, Justin King, DaJuan Morgan, Marcus Harrison, Oneil Cousins, Bryan Kehl

7:01 — The Redskins pick Malcolm Kelly

6:57 — The Cards take Calais Campbell

6:53 — The Eagles pick DeSean Jackson

6:47 — The Redskins pick TE Fred Davis

6:45 — The Eagles finally make a pick — DT Trevor Laws

6:42 — The Bengals take WR Jerome Simpson. The consensus board has fallen completely apart the last dozen picks.

Top players available: Chad Henne, Jamaal Charles, Limas Sweed, DeSean Jackson, Brian Brohm, Quentin Groves, Malcolm Kelly, Tyrell Johnson, Fred Davis, Kevin Smith, Martellus Bennett,

6:36 — The Lions take Jordan Dizon. Be happy you don’t have to hold Matt Millen’s press conference tonight.

6:29 — The Bears take RB Matt Forte. The Lions misery continues. This is another player Detroit liked.

6:24 — The Vikings move up to pick 43 and take Tyrell Johnson. D’oh squared. What are the Eagles doing? Do they not like any of the players picked so far? Do they think their roster is so set they don’t need a pick in the top 35 two years in a row?

6:23 — The Broncos take Eddie Royal. What does that say about DeSean Jackson that somebody with his game trumps him?

6:21 — Got Chris Berman muzzled. Ahhhh!

Top players available: Chad Henne, DeSean Jackson, Brian Brohm, Quentin Groves, Malcolm Kelly, Tyrell Johnson.

6:17 — The Bills take James Hardy

6:12 — New Orleans takes Tracy Porter

6:08 — Half a loaf. Jerry Jones is on the NFL Network but the audio in the joint is still with ESPN. One step at a time…

6:07 — Catching up — Seahawks take TE John Carlson; The Saints take OG Chilo Rachal.

6:04 — just asked the manager to switch to the NFL Network. ESPN has gone to their happy talk and has missed two picks. I hate this. I just hate this. Plus, Chris Berman’s voice can make my spine bend. That network’s sell-by date passed a long time ago.

5:54 — Falcons take Curtis Lofton

Note: Drafts I like so far. I’m happy with Dallas’ picks but the top early prize goes to K.C. Glenn Dorsey, Branden Albert and Brandon Flowers is a good start to a draft.

5:51 — The Packers take WR Jordy Nelson. The WR run is turbocharged. This is the first pick that makes me say “D’oh!”

5:47 — The Chiefs take Brandon Flowers. This is fast. This is fun.

5:43 — The Redskins take Devin Thomas. The WR run is officially on.

5:40 — The Rams start the WR run by taking Donnie Avery. Raise your hands if you thought Donnie Avery would be the 1st WR off the board.

5:37 — The Dolphins get it started by taking DE Phillip Merling

I guess I can’t complain about not taking a Wr with our first when nobody else did either. But I have high hopes for the second round–Doucett, Sweed, Hardy anyone?

    Good that we waited.

Gotta say that I think Jones is the perfect fit in our system if we get the barbarian signed. Come on guys we’ve got our home run hitter at RB and our Packman insurance policy! What more do you want?!?

The biggest D’oh for me is Houston’s pick of D. Brown (OT).

    Reeeeeaaaach.

You’d have thought that was a pick by the Bills.

What do you think about the new pace of the draft?

    CaptainComeback on April 26th, 2008 5:58 pm

The order the WR’s are being taken in is crazy.
This is exactly why I said don’t take a WR until the 3rd or 4th. There are no clear cut top 3.

    Bring me Tyrell Johnson

    jake on April 26th, 2008 5:58 pm

i would really like jj to trade up and take de sean jackson. You have to be a great player to even make it to a premier college as a 5-9 receiver. He has overcome that obsticle all his life, and is now a 2nd round receiver. I like him a lot more than bigger wr’s because he’s had to work harder and prove a lot more to get here. Plus we need a deep threat

If Jerry really loves somebody he should jump up and take them. I’m all for it. Screw quanity of picks, I want people JJ believes can play. I would love a speedy slot WR like Royal or Desan.

  15. 15
    jake on April 26th, 2008 6:03 pm

Or might we go with another CB, like justin king? Before pacman, all of us were talking about 2 CB’s, and if henry is moving to saftey, makes a good case for drafting without pacman in mind

  16. 16

    Jake,
Maybe a safety with good coverage skills…are there any left? I admit I havent really followed them since I was hoping for a good WR and RB

    AFCowboy on April 26th, 2008 6:20 pm

    Fellas,

I have loved the debate all day long, but now my two cents is merited.

We need Defensive Lineman. Wade is squirming in his seat thinking how he is going to create pressure with the likes of Spears et al.

We are sweet in the defensive backfield. I’m greedy too, so I want more. But, if there is someone who can bring it Justin Tuck style, that is our guy.

  38. 38

With the trade that me made to move up to 25, what are our late round picks?

  42. 42
    CaptainComeback on April 26th, 2008 6:23 pm

Torch, Great at Run Support, Great Speed unlike Roy but so so coverage skills. Teams are in love with him.

Torch I think 61st sucks as well. I don’t want to wait. I wish jerry would trade our 4th and move up in this round and get who they want. We are not the Dolphins we don’t need 9 players to get better. Just a few.

    scout on April 26th, 2008 6:24 pm

    What a great first round.

I told you Dallas would take Felix Jones, and they took him over Mendenahll. I put some of concerns some scouts had about Mendenhall on the blog yesterday. Felix Jones will prove all his doubters wrong. I’ve seen him play many times. What a steal at number 22.

I told you the Titans wanted Felix Jones, and I told you to look for Chris Johnson (to Tennessee) after Dallas took Felix Jones.

    That is exactly what happened.

  46. 46
    scout on April 26th, 2008 6:25 pm

Dallas flat out stole Mike Jenkins. To get a 4.38 CB at pick 25 is a steal. He could play safety and corner.

  47. 47
    vegascowboy on April 26th, 2008 6:25 pm

    Jake,
HAS is the key word…Jason Garrett wants a good FB so I’m thinking we keep two FBs possibly 3 TEs this year…thanks for the insight.

  63. 63

  68. 68
    jake on April 26th, 2008 6:35 pm

I think with seattle, they had several teams looking to trade up, and a 5th from dallas wasn’t quite enough. So jerry throws in a 7th to put it over the top. Its questionable, but we got the guy we wanted

  69. 69
    scout on April 26th, 2008 6:36 pm

    Ridgelake,

Mario Manningham may be the best WR in the draft. He is a first round talent. He has slid due to character and intelligence concerns.

DeSean Jackson was being projected in the firt round by many experts.

So, why don’t you get off your high horse.

I called the Felix Jones pick and was called out.

    So, get in line.

  74. 74

well, don’t forget we have some extra picks from the trade with miami, so we still have an extra 3rd, and 1 5th left. I don’t think we have a 4th, we lost that to pacman tennessee trade

  82. 82
    scout on April 26th, 2008 6:44 pm

    VegasCowboy,

Some scouts believe Mendenhall doesn’t have enough lateral movement. They feel he may not be able to avoid hits and change direction fast. He dodged some agility drills, from whay I’ve read, at the combine. A scout said he isn’t sure about Mendenahall’s mental toughness. He was talking about Mendenhall taking a lot of punishment, and he didn’t know if he had the mental toughness to take it.

I’m glad Jerry Jones sees the need for some finesse in this offense. Felix Jones can run between the tackles.

You can either go through the wall, or you can avoid the wall and explode.

Felix Jones will aviod the wall and explode.

Scout, I actually would be fine taking Jackson now.

Manningham is an absolute bonehead. No way in hell would I draft him in the 2nd. Maybe in the 4th. But you said it yourself, “He has slid due to character and intelligence concerns.” Those are pretty big issues.

I just got home from work an hour ago. Man was I surprised!! I was talking to my dad on my cell and walked in to the list of picks scrolling across the screen. I remember seeing Felix Jones name come up at #22 and said to myself “Oh, we knew that was coming”, and then I saw that Mendenhall, a guy I thought we had NO shot at, was taken right after our pick and I yelled “OH NOOOOOOOOOO!!!”. Couldn’t believe it. THEN I saw that we drafted Jenkins with #25 and I flipped out again and yelled “OH YEAH!!!!”.

Just wild man. I don’t have a problem anymore with us drafting Felix Jones, came to terms with that a long time ago, but I do think that I would have gone with Mendenhall. To me it’s not that we should have picked Jenkins at #22 and then Felix at #28 because as Raf said he wouldn’t have been available. It’s that I would have taken Mendenhall, who’s a better back IMO, with #22 and then done what they did for Jenkins.

All in all though there’s NO DOUBT in my mind that we are a better overall team, maybe much better than we were before this draft started.

BTW, I CAN’T BELIEVE THAT DEVIN THOMAS FELL ALL THE WAY TO #34!!! Man, Avery was the 1st WR taken?? Are you freaking kidding me???

I’d pick F Jones over Mendenhall…Mendenhall was a one year wonder at college, F Jones was productive for 3 years. He avged 8+ YPC last year and has the 2nd highest YPC (7.6 YPC) for his career of anybody in NCAA history with 350+ carries. Also he is a hell of a kick returner - returned kicks for 3 years avged 30+ per kick return one year, 28+ last year. big plus for the offense and the kick return game IMO

    donnyposner on April 26th, 2008 7:40 pm

What makes this a not a good draft?

    Dallas’s Number 1 need was a WR.

Now, I’m not saying they should have taken one in the first round, but they could not work out a trade for Roy Williams, Anquan Boldin, or Chad Johnson.

They took a RB where he had little value. He’s an ok RB but you could have taken a complimentary RB later.

The CB is fine allowing Henry to move to FS.

What happens if TO goes down? Seriously.

2nd Round…I look at Martellus Bennett TE

I don’t think they got great value for Fasano & Ayodele, making them need a TE which they could have spent on something else.
