4th Round Live Blogging

Posted: April 27, 2008 @ 10:56 am

12:45 — The Morning News guys are still begging Rashard Mendenhall to take them back, even though he’s in Pittsburgh now.  One of them says Choice would not have been needed had Dallas drafted Super Rashard yesterday.

What ever.  The Cowboys always carry three backs.  Marion Barber was the only back on their roster on Friday. (Alonzo Coleman doesn’t count as an NFL running back.)   They were going to draft another back today even with Felix Jones.  Jerry said they were going to take another back today in his after draft presser yesterday.   It’s on the team web site. (scroll down to short shorts)

Why are those guys acting surprised?

12:00 — The Cowboys select RB Tashard Choice. My 4th rounder comes through.

11:53 — Dallas on deck again. Seattle takes Red Bryant one spot ahead of Dallas’ pick. D’oh!

11:22 — The Cowboys trade again! With the Browns! The Cowboys get Cleveland’s 3rd in ‘09. Not bad. Dallas now has an extra 3rd and 4th next year. Preparing a package for a veteran?

11:19 — The Bears are on the clock. Dallas is on deck - again.

11:02 — The Browns trade up into Dallas’ spot and take ILB Beau Bell. Dallas now picks at 111 and 122.

Dallas gets Cleveland’s 5th, replacing the pick lost in the Mike Jenkins’ deal. Looking for compensation from the Raiders trade down.

10:55 — The Packers are picking at 102. The Cowboys are two spots away.

I’ve changed my mind. We don’t need another WR or anything like that. We need to draft CB Orlando Scandrick. We need to have at least 10 dang CB’s on the team for when the Giants and Redskins come to town. I can see Manning drooling right now when Burress, Toomer, Shockey, Smith, and Manningham get lined up. If we have 10 DB’s we can put at least 2 on each WR. That’ll show em!!!

Ed Werder just said that they didn’t draft Mendenhall because he couldn’t beat out Pierre Thomas a year ago. His work ethic was questionable as a backup.

ANOTHER GODDANGED TRADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fire the torches up and get the mob headed on the way to Valley Ranch.

This is ridiculous. I already know what he’s thinking. Oh, a 4th round pick probably can’t make the team. Then why pick anyone?? Bring em in and let them compete for jobs. We’ve got a good team but it’s not so great that some of our rotational guys can’t be beat out. There’s some dang good players that were still on the board and we let them just go by.

I just read on the DMN blog that MB3 hasn’t been working out with his teammates??? And that he may hold out because we drafted a RB?? His agent says it’s not true but now I’m wondering. I hate to belabor the point but if Mendenhall had been the pick then MB3 would have WAY less leverage.

BTW, the Chiefs are having a HELL of a draft this year. After years of sucking at it.

BTW 2, what’s up with all the CPU usage crap?? It’s happening after every post I make.

Jerry should just trade all the picks every year. That way, at some draft in the future, we will have like a 100 picks.

Jerry thinks “wheeling and dealing” is an end in itself, not a means to an end. He seems to get too cute at some point in every draft. I haven’t given up hope yet, but this is starting to get a little ridiculous.

  58. 58
    Becho on April 27th, 2008 11:42 am

They must have a NT they like more than Bryant, they keep passing on him.

I am very bumbed about passing on Manningham, I wanted him in the late 2nd.

  59. 59
    scout on April 27th, 2008 11:42 am

Passing on Manningham was frustrating. Dallas needs a young WR, and he could be the steal of the draft AT THE END OF ROUND 3. If he gets his head on, he could be a pro bowl player some day. Now, we get to play him twice a year.

Chris Carter doesn’t know what he is talking about. Carter was a bust in Philadelphia. Manningham ran a low time of 4.38 at his pro day. He was a second team All-American. He runs good routes, he has good hands, he gets separation at the line and in the open field. Go look at his stats. He needs mental focus all the time. Listening to Carter, you would think he was a no name player.

If those two NT prospects come off the board before we pick, Jerry Jones will be second guessed. I see several teams picking ahead of us which might jump on Bryant or Rubin. It is past time for them to come off the board.

Picking Felix Jones over Mendenahall was a smart and sound move. Felix Jones isn’t a “backup” running back. I have never seen such a great player get smashed like this. It is ridiculous.

Why is Dallas the only team trading down every time they get on the clock?

  60. 60
    UnconventionalWisdom on April 27th, 2008 11:43 am

Hawkins at WR actually interests me. Burtin from Kentucky too.
And if you think you’re frustrated about what we’re doing at WR, people are going to skewer the Titans for failing to get VY a decent receiver.

  61. 61
Adam McCloskey on April 27th, 2008 11:43 am

Look at what the essential outcome of the wheelings and dealings.

Gone: A 3rd, Anthony Fasano, Akin Ayodele.

Arrived: Pacman Jones, a 3 and a 4 for next year.

I think that’s how it works out, I left my TI-85 at work, so I can’t be sure.

But what are we complaining about?

Marshall Faulk loves him. He said he has great vision, sees the crease, gets small, hits the crease very fast and explodes.

Mayock loves Felix Jones as well.

  66. 66
Adam McCloskey on April 27th, 2008 11:46 am

Last year after the CLE trade, I immediately thought we’d get D-Mac and Manningham in the first.

So I liked him. I could even over look the potheadedness, the slow combine time, and the SIX on the Wonderlic… However, Manningham didn’t show up to his interview with Jerry at the combine.

At that point, he was off the board.

  67. 67
    Becho on April 27th, 2008 11:46 am

  71. 71
    scout on April 27th, 2008 11:52 am

By 2009, Felix Jones can be at least a 20 carry guy. This notion that he is made of glass or isn’t tough enough to run between the tackles is ridiculous.

He doesn’t go down easily. He avoids people in the second level and gets big plays. When his space closes, he lowers his shoulders and gets what he can.

  72. 72
    Squidlo97 on April 27th, 2008 11:52 am

We dont really have a backup, we have half of a rotation. Though it wont be half and half(not dairy product) till Felix(the Rb not cat) gets more up to speed(quickness not drugs) on blocking and the playbook.

We needed a RB to replace TT last year. It was painfully obvious early on that only MB3 was sticking around. Drafting two RBs in the first four rounds is evidence of poor roster planning.

Still need another CB, WR, a safety, maybe a NT, ILB….we can pick them up next year, again one year too late.

Jerry is working on a trade for a Veteran WR. Yesterday, when describing Anthony Henry, he called him “Chris.”

Slip of the tongue, or are we signing him, or trading for his former teammate, Ocho Cinco?

This would explain the reluctance to draft a WR.

The selection of Tashard Choice may mean a trade of MBIII?

How would a staight up trade with the Bengals sound?

    MBIII for Ocho Cinco?

    With the Lions?

    MBIII for Roy Williams?

    Hmmm……

There is still Okam to pick as a 3-4 NT, if he lasts till the next Dallas selection. Carl Nicks and Tony Hills are both still on the board too. It might be worth a sixth rd pick to take a flyer on Tommy Blake since he is Dallas area prospect and Jerry is in the reclamation business.

Could Barber be put in a package for Chad Johnson. They need a running back.

With all the weapons coming into the division, some of them are bound to hit.

Dallas better hope they can pull Chad Johnson out of the Jungle. They are hurting at WR behind Owens and Crayton.

Man, I wanted Rubin or Bryant. There is no way Rubin lasts until our next pick. Harrison was good, too, but he was a big character risk.

I’m tired of Brandon Jacobs falling forward for three and four yards.

It sure would be nice to have someone like Ahmad Bradshaw on the roster, with a full year of seasoning. Tyson T should have been given a ham sandwich and a bus ticket in August. We are replacing him at least a year too late, especially when you consider that it was 50-50 before last season started that JJ was gone. An entire year’s roster spot wasted.

Cowboys line was awesome when the runners had vision and were patient behind their blockers.

Julius was very bad at that. These two picks at RB and MBIII display great vision, which I think may be the most important indicator of success, given how the cowboys offense is run.

I think Cricket will be a good FB though, I haven’t written him off. I think rookies especially at spots like his just get injured until they get stronger and better technique.

    maplesyrup,

Our system REQUIRES two players. Right now we have F. Jones and M. Barber. If one of them gets hurt who plays?

    Answer: T. Choice.

Frankly it was a solid, solid pick.

Now, I don’t agree with trading down so much and to me missing out on Bryant was asinine. But given that he was gone Choice was good.

IMO our biggest needs of the day were RB (yes, still) and NT.

We could still use an OLB, a C/G, another DB, and a developmental QB.

Obviously WR is a need but what are you going to get in the last 3 rounds that will fill a need?

  123. 123
    jevans1729 on April 27th, 2008 12:35 pm

    Scout

Jerry Jones said initially that he did not believe the WRs in this draft were better than the ones he had. This included Manningham I guess. Pacman was another case entirely. We NEEDED corners and Pacman was available for a cheap price.

I, for one think Jerry is doing a good job. He gets Pacman and Tashard Choice for 2 #4s. He just protected his team and salary cap from MBIII enormous demands. He gets Pacman and Jenkins and protects himself from Newman leaving. He has added extra picks for next year that can be used in a trade for a FA wide receiver or to replace other players if needed. He also gets a beast of a tightend and Felix Jones to help in the running game and return game which were areas of need. What do you want from the guy?

  124. 124
    scout on April 27th, 2008 12:38 pm

You know, the Colts worked out Manningham. Marvin Harrison’s knee is a big question mark.

Tony Dungy is a pretty fair guy. If he passed on a talent like Manningham late in the third round, especially with all the Big Ten players they draft, Manningmam must really have serious problems.

I know I’ve said this so much that people are sick of it but of all the RB’s at the Senior Bowl, IMO Choice was the best. I was VERY impressed with him. I really do think he has starting ability. I like the picks and I think Jerry gets bashed unfairly. How many owners have the success he has had since getting the Cowboys.

He gets no credit for the Dallas 90’s dynasty. He gets all the blame for the hits that team took when the salary cap took effect. Now he gets no credit for helping Dallas become an elite team once again. I, for one, am grateful we have a proactive owner interested in fiedling the best team he can. He also puts his money where his mouth is.

Dallas is 13-3 and talented. You complainers can’t be satisfied! Throughout the NFL’s history, very few teams have nailed an entire draft class - when you do, you’re lucky.

How many people would retract their complaints if Jerry packaged some of next year’s picks to get a Roy Williams type WR?

We’ve just added 3 CB’s to our roster in Scandrick, Adam Jones, and Jenkins who all run in the 4.3’s. Youth, speed, and ability. Henry’s the slowest DB on the team behind Roy now.

    CB1 - Newman
    CB2 - A. Jones
    CB3 - Jenkins
    CB4 - Scandrick or Ball

    SS - Hamlin
    FS - Henry

    That’s our dime package.

Depth - Williams, C. Brown, Watkins, Ogelsby

Gentlemen, we now have the deepest and most talented defenisve backfield in the NFL (assuming a reinstated Jones and a healthy Henry).

Now, before you strain your fingers bitching on the blog, keep in mind that depth is critical to us becase two of our top four DBs are huge risks. Jones could be gone at any time and Henry is the definition of “injury prone”.

Jerry was very wise to get us insurance. He focused on positions where rookies have an excellent chance of making an immediate impact (RB, and CB).

He avoided a muddled wide receiver field, which is also a position where players are notorious for contributing little their first two season.

Clearly we need a WR in a bad way, but it is also clear that we didn’t see anyone here that blew us over.
