Third Round Live Blogging

10:50 — The Cowboys trade with the Raiders at pick 104.

10:46 — The Titans take Oneal Cousins at 99. Dallas is up.

10:44 — The Falcons take S Thomas DeCoud. Dallas is on deck.

10:41 — The Bengals take WR Andre Caldwell at pick 97.

10:39 — The Redskins take G Chad Rinehart.

10:36 — The Giants take Mario Manningham at the 95th spot. Four compensatory picks and Dallas is back on the clock.

10:23 — Dallas trades down with the Detroit Lions, who pick 111th The Cowboys get the Lions ‘09 4th rounder for moving down 19 spots.

10:21 — The Packers select Jermichael Finley. Dallas is on the clock.

10:16 — The Bears take DT Marcus Harrison at 90

10:12 — The Texans take Steve Slaton at pick 89. Dallas is just three picks away.

9:54 — The Chiefs take S DaJuan Morgan. Dallas is ten picks away.

9:51 — The Cardinals take Early Doucet with the 81st pick.

9:48 — The Eagles take LB Bryan Smith at pick 80; the Texans take Antwan Molden one pick prior.

The NFL Network just showed Commissioner Roger Goodell hanging out in the gallery, shaking hands and taking photos with fans. Great P.R. move on his part. When has a commissioner ever made himself accessable to fans? It’s a small gesture but this can change his reputation if he does this with regularity.

Note: The teams are averaging about 3 minutes per pick. We’re at pick 75. Dallas picks 92nd and 100th, so we’re about 45-50 minutes away from their next selection. Dallas has only three picks today so I don’t think we’ll see a trade up.

9:34 — Big names flying off the board: Dan Connor goes to Carolina and Reggie Smith to the 49ers.

9:32 — the Chiefs claim Jamaal Charles at 73. Their great draft continues.

And we’re off. Actually the league got off before I got up, but the Cowboys are still around 20 picks away.

Thus far, ten picks in:

9:31 - Charles Godfrey and Earl Bennett are gone.

    From last thread:

Bears are Vanderbilt North. Hillenmeyer and now two picks with Williams and Bennett. The Bucs used to stock Vanderbilt players, now it looks like the Bears do. Usually pretty coachable/smart players.

Raf I trusted you and your source and Im 2.5 out of 3 on my picks yesterday. When you 1st mentioned the TE I looked him up and was impressed. Everyone has their microscope on and want to see what he will do this year but with Curtis on the roster its not neccessary to rush him.

I didnt want Felix but I have to say if Garrett is the Golden child/ Genius that we percieve him to be then giving him weapons to stretch out the offense in directions is probably the right thing to do. Lets give him a chance to be as creative as we think he is. If you think he is a Walsh/Holmgren/Martz type of talent then turn him loose. We should have the D to allow some growing pains.

Let the rest of the NFC east load up on pass catchers, we got the horses to cover and the pass rushers to go with it.

My only question about Felix is this: Can he block?

Doucet and Caldwell still on the board at pick 81. I’m crossing my fingers for Doucet to make it 12 more picks.

  8. 8
    UnconventionalWisdom on April 27th, 2008 9:51 am

I wuld think the Titans would take Doucett before we pick. But they seem to have the same WR phobia the Cowboys do.

KC jist took the safety Morgan. A darkhorse pick for us in my mind.

  14. 14

Then the Chiefs took the best safety left on the board–Morgan.

  17. 17

What should have happened is Arizona trading Boldin to us for Barber and them taking Doucet and more importantly us taking Mendenhall and Charles in the second.

Raf, I’ve got to give you your props…you called it weeks ago on Bennett. Personally, I hated the way we traded away a TE for a 4th only to pick another one in the 2nd, but your ability to prognosticate is very very impressive.

Dallas has only 3 picks today. Lets think about how many roster spots are realistically open.

    Possible needs:

    NT
    Interior Oline
    Safety
    ILB
    FB

We could use an upgrade at WR. But at this point, are any of these guys going to be better than whats on the roster? I doubt it. The more I think about it, the more I expect 93 and 100 will be One of those first 3 spots mentioned. The 6th rounder will probably be the FB.

  22. 22
    Thor on April 27th, 2008 10:00 am

Right now I would think the Cowboys would look to draft a NT and a G with the next two picks.

I really want them to take the FB out of Arkansas, but given that they took Bennett yesterday, I don’t think that will happen.

  29. 29

Kameleon (Post 37 from previous thread):

    Re - Rashard Mendenhall

Do you think the Cowboys will be better off or worse off without Marion Barber? We got into a similar debate on these boards re: Flozell Adams and Terrence Newman.

Contracts are contracts, but these guys are Cowboys. They will be resigned. We don’t want to trade in Marion Barber, a proven NFL commodity, for an unproven rookie if we don’t have to. Same thing goes for Flozell Adams (fortunately we resigned him before free agency started) and same goes for Newman.

Barber will come down with his asking price and Jerry will move up.

  33. 33
    Sam on April 27th, 2008 10:08 am

Another option could be Reggie Smith, safety.

One thing is for certain, it isn’t going to be WR. I’ve said it along, there is no room on the roster for another WR. This tells me they expect Glenn to be ready to go and that they believe Stanback can be a player.

  34. 34
    CaptainComeback on April 27th, 2008 10:08 am

    sgtcwby on April 27th, 2008 10:09 am

I really think we need to take Mario Manningham with the 3rd pick. A DT can be picked up with our 4th rounder.

The facts of the matter is we don’t know if we will pick up a Vet WR or if any of our back up WR will step up and give T.O. some help. Mario could be that guy. He messed up yes, but he would be a steal at this point in the draft.

  38. 38
    AustonianAggie7 on April 27th, 2008 10:11 am

My problem with Henne & Manningham is that the wideouts there only seemed to run 4 routes.

  39. 39
    Squidlo97 on April 27th, 2008 10:11 am

When Im playing Gm and Im determining whether I want a guy I think interms of his hit/bust potential. things you like and dont like. Mendall hall is a guy I wasnt sold on any more than Felix. Both had measurables and production from big time programs. They certainly both deservered to be 1st rounders.

My only fault with Felix wasnt his talent but the amount of use out of a 1st rounder. Hey that franchise back territory not suppliment/ compliment. We always talk about putting these guys in space but when did we put Julius in space. I also wanted a WR more.

My problem with Mendanhall was though he looks great in shorts and certainly looks like a franchise back, he couldnt beat out an undrafted FA. Franchise backs start early unless another FranchiseBack is on the roster. They also say he doesnt like contact. I dont have a problem with a back running out of bounds but running between the tackles you cant be afraid or looking to avoid collisions. This is a bigger problem than compliment back.

We will know the truth about Mendenhall by week 10. Pitt will find out quickly if this is the case because they play smash mouth. Their fan base will be all over him.

    Vandy,

I have no idea what’s going to happen with Barber. I like him but don’t want to pay him top 5 money to do it. Felix Jones is a great player but IMO, he’s not Mendenhall. I’d rather have the guy who can start someday over the guy who I have more questions about. My whole objection to Felix has ALWAYS been about whether or not you draft a complementary back in the 1st round.

    Squid,

The best way to determine whether or not Mendenhall liked contact or not is just to watch the film. Who made more contact, Felix or Mendenhall?? I don’t know what happened the year before with Mendenhall but I do know that against a lot of great teams he carried the load and showed that he can be a starter in this league. I’m happy with Jones but I would have taken Mendenhall. I’ll be honest about that.

The Giants and the Deadskins are coming loaded for Bear. Our offense passing wise might be getting left behind a little. Giants have Burress, Steve Smith, Shockey, and now Manningham. Deadskins have Cooley, Santana Moss, Devin Thomas, and Malcolm Kelley. I just think we’ve fell behind a little now although not one of these multiple receiving threats is as good as TO. Good thing we’ve got 4 good CB’s on the team. We’re going to need them.

I don’t think we are going to get any “WOW” players for the rest of the draft. Most likely be rotational, fillers. I really want a WR, but I just don’t see anybody I like that is left….

The war room is thinking OL or WR with the first 4th rounder pick because of value. I can still see us picking up Bryant though.

    Caldwell is gone to Cinci.

If not Caldwell or Bryant, I guess DT Moore is no slouch…

Hitzges keeps saying we might like the WR from Kentucky–Burton. He came for a visit apparently.

I see a TE or a LB in our future here.

    Squidlo97 on April 27th, 2008 10:45 am

I just keep reminding myself that for all of that flash, championships are won by the better Defense. I hope this neglect of WRs is because of optimism for Stanbach. Is optimism a plan?

If it’s a TE I am completely shutting it off, I will be officially disgusted

No. Apparently Jerry wanted to move up to get WR Hardy in te second (from DMN blog).

    kameleon_o on April 27th, 2008 10:47 am

Why take a WR with 1st round ability when you can potentially get a future practice squad offensive lineman?? In 3 years or so we might need to replace Bradie James so we might as well draft his LB replacement. Here weeeeee gooooooo!!!

    Sam on April 27th, 2008 10:47 am

OK, here are my guesses for the #100 pick:

    OL–McGlynn
    OL–Schuening
    NT–Moore
    NT–Bryant
    FB–Hillis

    Squid,

Optimism can be a plan if the guy had ever done anything besides just model a jersey on the sideline. I refuse to even think about Stadbeck until I actually see him play WR once. Ugh…..

You WR guys realize if we draft one, we’re going to have to cut one of the ones on our team right? We have 6 receivers now, so who are we going to draft in the 4th round thats going to beat out Hurd or Austin?

    kameleon_o on April 27th, 2008 10:56 am

    K Hondo,

Have Austin or Hurd shown ANYTHING that makes you think they can’t be beat out?? Especially Austin. The guy has bricks for hands. A rookie WR doesn’t even necessarily even need to beat out Austin or Hurd. He just needs to be about even with them. The rookie will be cheaper for one thing and this is how you make your team better. Like Parcells said, you churn the bottom of your roster. Austin and Hurd aren’t guaranteed a dang thing. Bring in a good prospect and let them compete. There’s no law that says that ’cause they’re on our roster now they have to always be on our roster.

BTW, I’m not mad at you or anybody. Just frustrated.

  140. 140
    kameleon_o on April 27th, 2008 11:02 am

I’ve changed my mind. We don’t need another WR or anything like that. We need to draft CB Orlando Scandrick. We need to have at least 10 dang CB’s on the team for when the Giants and Redskins come to town. I can see Manning drooling right now when Burress, Toomer, Shockey, Smith, and Manningham get lined up. If we have 10 DB’s we can put at least 2 on each WR. That’ll show em!!!
