People Try to Steal Our Stuff, Part One

Pay attention, Pillage People:

GALVESTON — Seven newspaper companies and a wire service filed a lawsuit Friday in federal court to stop island-based Police News Publishing company from using their articles in its print and online publications.

The plaintiffs claim that Breck Porter, whose five or so publications include Galveston Police News, infringed on their copyrights by publishing “complete, unedited copies of stories” reported by their newspapers and news services.

Plaintiffs in the lawsuit are The Daily News and The Brazosport Facts; the Houston Chronicle, Beaumont Enterprise, and San Antonio Express-News, which all are Hearst Corp. newspapers; The Baytown Sun; Bay City Newspapers; and The Associated Press.

Porter said he was shocked to learn of the lawsuit, with which he had not been served. He said he had always tried to resolve complaints from newspapers and others about how he republished their work.

The lawsuit, filed in the Houston division of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, argues that the plaintiffs have tried to work with Porter without success to curtail what court papers call “wholesale misappropriation” of their original news content.

The plaintiffs say they have asked Porter to link to their Web sites instead of copying the entire text of their articles onto his Web sites

This, ladies and gentlemen, is why I’m so adamant that people link to stories they quote and that they not cut and paste copyrighted material whole from other sites.

And now back to our regularly scheduled offseason.

Newspapers are really scrambling to get rid of these blogs, because if they keep growing the way that they do. People won’t want to buy the paper every morning.

I mean seriously, you read the internet for you news now and use the paper for a crossword or a sudoku.

Zak, you can find sudoku online, or download a sudoku program superior to anything in the paper. Even that is a loser for them.

Having said that, I still buy the paper, because it is a lot easier to skip through and find what I want without all the annoying popups.

Newspapers need to realize that they are DIEING. And if they do not find what the people want to have they will be DEAD. This is just a stupid head in the sand, pull the covers over my head reaction by people who do not get it.

Hmmm…strangely quiet in this new space… Hey, did you guys here that TO is threatening to hold out of the upcoming minicamp unless Jerry gives him an extension? Apparently Rosenhaus let something slip about all the young talent the Cowboys have at WR is threatening TO’s longterm future in Dallas. And unconfirmed sources report that Rosenhaus might be using TO’s weight as leverage in the MBIII negotiations…

(heh, heh, heh, maybe that will get ‘em talking)

Considering how little warning there was about this switch it should be no surprise that a lot of regulars are not here.

    Rafael,

I’m sure you get a lot of this yourself.

Cowboyszone.com already has your Cowboys/Giants pass rush article on their blog…but of course at least they linked their source and then posted the article.

If you just type in the web address it automatically changes it to a link — as long as you use the entire address, such as http://www.blueandsilverreport.com.

gosh….. soooooooooo slow. not even any new topics. how bout koren robinson??? would come cheap. is a decent deep threat. might be worth a look-see at minimum.. no ones sayin we have to sign the guy. although he would be yet another troubled player added to the cowboys roster

Tex wants to know what happened, and why? Transparency from the start is always the best policy.

Is Koren Robinson a deep threat? I always thought he was a possession guy….Anyway wasnt he picked with one of the 1st rounders Dallas forked over for Galloway?

You can also put your cursor in the url window on your screen, should be the window that shows the address your in now as http://www.blueandsilverreport.com/2008/05/10/people-try-to-steal-our-stuff-part-one/

I think if you left click twice it will highlight the entire url, then if you right click it, you have the option to copy.

Once you’ve copied it, you can come here and right click again and paste. Voila!

    I hope this helps.

Raf, what about if you take a paragraph or sentence from another site, but reference the site and author, similar to a footnote in a written paper. That isn’t pillaging is it?

    kameleon_o on May 11th, 2008 4:56 pm

This is a very serious subject. So serious that I cut and pasted the whole article and put it onto another forum to warn people. LOL

I can understand if it’s a pay site. You have to pay for their content and they don’t want you to pass it out so to speak, but I don’t understand the problem with posting someone’s work if you 1) Post the link to the original website, and 2) Give full attribution to whoever wrote it. That way everyone’s getting what they want.

Tex wants to know what happened, and why? Transparency from the start is always the best policy.

Raul thinks that since it was a sudden and unannounced move that there’s probably a reason why it hasn’t been posted.

Raul also believes that the reason will be told once we’re able to.

Tex and the truth. Novel concept.

  24. 24
    Tex on May 11th, 2008 10:25 pm

Transparency and immediate response. Two core values that have served Tex well.

If Romo had said… “I erred by running off to Cancun the week of a playoff game instead of picking up the tab for a team dinner,” he would have gained much needed credibility with the fans and his teammates. Instead he’s Bill Buckner, and the only QB in the NFC East never to have win a playoff game.

Come out quickly with a response and shoot straight with your constituency, even if it sucks.

  25. 25
    Chandus on May 11th, 2008 10:51 pm

Oh, the Washington QB has won a playoff game? When? In your dreams? In the same dream that also included Henson as a champion?

Got something to say?
