A Sneak Peek at ‘08

Posted: May 29, 2008 @ 9:16 am

I was a guest on The PigskinPodcast last night.  You can hear the interview here.

I don’t normally speak this fast, but I was told we were going to squeeze a lot into ten minutes.

It’s not so much that you are talking fast - it’s that either your phone or the pigskin’s people production quality sucks eggs and makes you sound like marlon brando as don corleone with a wad of cotton in your mouth …

Since I posted this on last blog while Raf was posting this new one:

So now Glenn is not wanted as a Cowboy?

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3416853

Jerry can be one tough son of a gun. If Glenn signs the waiver and gets hurt, the Cowboys are off the hook for his cap space?

Why piss off a guy whom the Cowboys said they were counting on?

I still think June 1 will be very interesting. There should be some cuts and surprise FA pick ups.

As far as sending Ellis for Taylor, no way! Taylor may still be a better athlete, but Ellis fits our scheme better and is a couple years younger AND is not planning to be a Hollywood star unless they are planning on making a movie about Fozzy Bear.

Raf, you sounded fine. The audio production was not great (not your fault). Great analysis as always!

Greg Ellis is being a bitch again…(Says the DMN Cowboys blog), now he’s whining about not getting enough playing time/reps in these OTAs. He’s afraid Spencer is going to take his spot this year and start over him. I mean seriously here…the guy had 12 sacks last season and went the probowl. On top of that he just got $2mil restructuring deal last year. And he’s still worried about his role on the team? I would trade him for Jason Taylor in a heartbeat…

So I pitched in 25$ last night for the training camp fund. I will pitch in another 25 next month. Last year I did not pitch in and I felt guilty because the analysis and info was awesome. I also hated it that Raf only got to stay for half the camp. Lets do a great job this year and raise alot of money. We have a long way to go the amazon site says we have about 700 bucks and the goal is 5000.

Raul, I know you have alot on your plate but it would be awesome if we could get updates on how much we have raised and how much we need. Maybe if you all posted more threads like the last one, asking for donations and giving us an update of how far we have gone and how much more we need to go.

Becho, I agree with you. It would be very nice if we could get an update on how much has been raised and how much is needed to cover camp costs, etc.

The last couple of years, Taylor has been used as a hybrid DE/LB. Under Saban, they lined him up all over the field. He can ABSOLUTELY thrive in our scheme, with very little adjustment.

Seems like the perfect “my headache for your headache” trade that would work for both teams. Parcells doesn’t like the example Taylor is setting for his young team? Trade him for Ellis, who is a pro’s pro, by all accounts. Re-do his deal and make him happy, and he will shut his mouth and be a mentor and give them a good pass rush. They have the cap-space to do it.

Dallas would get a better player that could put them over the top and rid themselves of Ellis’ bitching. Seems to make too much sense to me. I believe we even have a relationship with the braintrust over there.

Why are so many people contemplating a trade for taylor. He is already planning his retirement. I dont understand it for a second.

Wait… since when is Taylor a better OLB than Ellis? This is nonsense.

We are not trading for Jason Taylor, that’s just wacky talk.

Not sure how much leverage Greg Ellis has, given Anthony Spencer’s (apparent) rapid maturing process.

Plus, we now have a secret pass rush weapon. Eric Walden.

    Becho/Ridgelake:

I’ll see what I can do. The Amazon meter only shows what’s been donated through Amazon Honor System. We’ve also received donations through Paypal as well as received checks from people in the mail.

Once centralized meter would be nice. I’ll see what I can do, but only after I get the new look ironed out.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Hello, I agree with peco-s slim about jason taylor. That will never happen for one jason taylor was married to zach thomas sister, and they were getting a divorce. zach came to dallas to get away from jason taylor. I remember hearing about the problems they were having last year. Zach couldn’t wait to get away from taylor..It was reported last year about taylor and zach’s sister on espn as always

    Thanks.

Excellent job, Dr. V! Cogent, insightful and you keep your passion for the Boys separate from your analysis. Makes your opinion that much more credible, and I should think those guys on the Podcast had to be very happy with what you gave them.

    Thanks Raul.

I also dont understand the sentiment to trade Ellis for Taylor. Ellis is the perfect mentor for Ware and Spencer. He is the consumate “wily veteran” who knows all the tricks. Taylor isnt without knowledge either, but he’s definitely relied more on athleticism than Ellis.

Nope, give me the guy who WANTS to play football. Not the guy who wants to go to Hollywood. Yes, Greg is whining. He always does. He just loves to play football and sees that slipping away from him. He’s hungry. This is guy I want.

We know Ellis is going to bitch and moan. But we know he’s going to do his best to mentor the young guys. And he’s going to do his best to win football games. He’s a very productive player. He should be for a couple more years or so.

    miamicowboys5,

I doubt Zach Thomas came to Dallas to get away from JT. Zach came to Dallas to get his ring. JT is a very good 4-3 end and 3-4 olb but I see Ellis having more value than JT at this point. Ellis may complain but he isn’t trying to be Sir Dance Alot.

Tuna would absolutely love that trade but it just wont happen. Most Vets do not want to be part of a rebuilding process which is going on in Miami.

    Raul,
Thank you for all your efforts.

    BTW,
I hate the trade for Taylor, he does not have much experience as an OLB, has no experience in our system, is overpriced, and he is on his way out. Greg is going to complain, oh well, boo hoo. As long as he keeps doing what he is doing (mentoring and performing well) then let him be grumpy.

I heard someone on the radio today talking about Greg Ellis - I am really getting sick of his act. Anyway, they asked if Dallas could trade Ellis and a 3rd round pick to Miami for Jason Taylor. I wonder if Big Bill would be interested??

Rafael Vela on May 29th, 2008 9:29 pm

    Ah, Greg Ellis.

I’ve made my peace with him. He whines and he plays. What I don’t understand is why he’s so eager to leave a sure Super Bowl contender. He’ll never have a better shot at a ring.

As for the Taylor for Ellis rumors, cost is the only thing that could stop this in my mind.

And I must say I’m amused at the people taking shots at Taylor saying he’s not Ellis. The guy was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in ‘06. How many of those does Greg Ellis have on his mantle?

Are there actual Ellis for Taylor rumors? I really just pulled that out of my butt yesterday after reading an article about Taylor.
    Seemed like an interesting idea.

Got something to say?
