Memo to Felix: Better Shake, Same Ball Security

Posted: June 19, 2008 @ 10:44 pm

Early reports from Valley Ranch suggest that Felix Jones could upgrade the running back platoon, offering better hands, speed and shake than the departed Julius Jones.

Before we can put the new Jones on a pedestal, we should give the older Jones his credit for some impressive statistics:

  • In the last two years of the Julius/Marion plantoon, the duo lost just one fumble.
  • In their three years together, Jones and Barber lost only three fumbles.
  • Neither fumbled last year. In fact, Marion Barber has never lost a fumble in his career.

Cowboys fans are a fickle bunch, Felix. We’ll love every slinky-like move you make — so long as you hang onto the football. If you don’t, you’ll hear yourself linked with names like Tyson Thompson and Curvin Richards.

And nobody wants that.

Yeah our backs have been remarkably safe. One or two fumbles won’t hurt us or Felix’s rep if he’s playing well but over 3 or 4 and it starts to become an issue for us usually. Can’t wait to see Jones on the field though, he just look so fluid. Should be great fun to watch.

    From discussion on previous thread;

    Woooo hoooo….

Fighter a Jeffersonian? Jefferson was against standing armies and navy’s saying there were threats to liberty, but you’re pro military aren’t you? Jefferson only supports a Federal Government with greatly restrained powers. I could be wrong but that doesn’t seem like you Fighter, haven’t I heard you defend the Bush administration, they’re hardly restrained in fact they’ve granted themselves unprecedented powers.

Fighter, who has previously defended the Federal Reserve, a true Jeffersonian?

“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies . . . If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] . . . will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered . . . The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.” — Thomas Jefferson — The Debate Over The Recharter Of The Bank Bill, (1809)

“I sincerely believe that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies, and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity under the name of funding is but swindling futurity on a large scale.” Thomas Jefferson to John Taylor, 1816.

Let’s see; the Federal Reserve System was implemented and activated under very sly circumstances in 1913 and any relationship to gold was dropped in the 1970’s, and now you’re bankrupt (and it’s much worse the government/media is telling you). Oh and it’s not Federal it’s Private, they don’t use Reserves they Print the money, and it’s really a Syndicate. Instead of its deliberately deceptive name it should really be called; The Private Printing Syndicate. Don’t feel lonesome in you misery though, those Bankers basically have control over everyone’s money not just America’s.

Larry – didn’t want to disappoint you! Anyway, you shouldn’t be blogging here, shouldn’t you be off killing/dieing for Israel! Gotta make sure you protect Israel at all costs right? Ummm why? Have you ever really thought about your subservience to Israel and why? No, you’ll just revert to your brainwashed state and scream antisemitism.

Birdness – Another country with a better tax situation? America’s ranked 20th in this category (out of 159) by The State of World Liberty Project. In individual freedom America’s ranked 19th and economic freedom is ranked 6th. All up they rank America at #8 overall in their final average. Number 8 is very respectable but the idea that some of you spout that America is light years ahead of the rest of the world and the only beacon of hope in an otherwise dark universe is just silly kids stuff, grow up. There’s plenty of countries around the world that do just fine without you and plenty who would do better if you left them alone.

Birdness – clean water? Most of America has fluoridated water. Unfortunately they’re poisoning us here in Australia too. Ahh, nothing says freedom like mass forced ‘medication’.

And once and for all people; please please please please, let go of the left/right dichotomy it has become almost completely meaningless in modern politics, the alleged left/right differences are almost all completely trivial and as they debate them ad nauseam they all silently agree on one thing; that government should get bigger and bigger. And as government gets bigger you’ll get less and less freedom, as government gets bigger your country will become increasingly poorer, those who are paying attention will know this is already happening.

So, you want a simple dichotomy so you can break complex things down and just pick a side and cheer for it blindly like your football team?? Ok here’s a better one for you; Authoritarian or Libertarian. Which one are you. It’s easy to say ‘I love freedom’ but how do you really feel?

Looks like Luke erroneously pasted in text intended for a political blog.

This here is the Cowboys blog, and we’re talking some Felix.

and while I wish the subject would find its proper forum I am glad that people can engage in discourse on any subject here that’s beyond the crayon scribblings I see at a lot of other places.

    Football, people. Football.

    Ok Raf I’m done haha,

it’s the slow time of year…

Saw some short clips of Felix running routes and catching balls, man he looked like a receiver. I think he’s gonna catch plenty of passes this year.

Pecos, how can you be talking Felix if haven’t said anything about him? My post may be in the wrong place but yours is pointless :)

Raf, I’m sure the only reason you put up this post was to end the political discussions. Sorry it didn’t last long!
I will honor your wishes, but let Luke know I did post on the last thread in response to #2 above.

I mentioned before that Barber has been excellent in this area-and also posted that Tashard Choice had zero (that I can find) fumbles-
    zero!-
despite huge carry totals, including almost 300 carries last year.

    Good hands.

    Larry,

Just checked Felix’s carries/fumbles – 386 carries and 0 fumbles? Both Jones and Choice never fumbled in college? Can that be right or are we getting faulty facts here?

    Luke. on June 20th, 2008 12:36 am

Just checked Darren McFadden’s totals and ESPN has him with Zero fumbles as well. I’m pretty sure he had some fumble problems last year and it was debated here around draft time. I think ESPN, even though they have a Fumble column in their stats, are obviously not tracking it.

McFadden had more then a dozen fumbles last year. Suspicious that BSPN has him with none.

This is going to be a LONG freaking month until training camp starts. At least with OTAs and Mini-Camps we had something to chew on. This is going to suck big ones until Oxnard.

    Raf,

Since Felix is such a good reciver and can play the slot, is there any chance he forces one of the developmental recievers off the roster to save a spot? Maybe the Cowboys keep five recievers instead of six because of Jones’ (and even Witten’s) versatility?

Just providing some historical perspective here…Tony Dorsett fumbled 84 times in his 11 years with Dallas (almost as many fumbles in his career as touchdowns - 85), with a season-high of 12 in ‘78 and ‘84. Emmitt Smith fumbled 55 times in his 13 years with the Cowboys, including three seasons with just one fumble per (’94,’97,’01), with a season-high of 8 fumbles in 1991.

Interestingly, Dorsett and Emmitt each threw their only option TD passes once they left the team, in Denver and Arizona, respectively.

“Maybe the Cowboys keep five recievers instead of six because of Jones”

I thought the Boys usually kept 5. Glenn was given a pass but last year adding Stanback should have booted somebody.

Here is my thought about Julius Jones’ Not Fumbling the football…

His first year, he showed lots of elusiveness running with the ball, and the results were remarkable…

Somehow the following years he got much more bulkier (running stiff) and was holding the ball with two hands all the time while running, which took away his elusiveness and became more like a robot. I think parcel put the fear of God in him and he became so concern with not fumbling (hence running with both hands on the ball) that it took away from his game.

I would’ve rather JJ fumble few times and continued his first year trend. Just IMHO.

P.S. Sorry Raf, just a little response to the Australian guy.

America might have been ranked lower than many countries in various categories.. But it always ranks number one choice for anyone from any country to live in.

that’s because countries like Dubai (who are among those topping the U.S.) are quoted as stating the American model is their inspiration of commerce and capitalism as well, HOWEVER …. Americans no longer teach their own in public education about their own commerce system and spew rhetoric that wreaks of socialism and marxism. You read our founding fathers and you don’t find a desire for a small military you find a desire for a SMALL government … one that would never force any private hard working contractor to build homes with mandatory solar panels …. society should own government, you want the government to own society.

P.S. many words NOT capitalized intentionally…
