Source: The Questions Are On Offense
Posted: July 2, 2008 @ 4:29 pm
I talked to a source who broke down the issues facing the team less than a month before training camp. Although the offense ranked 2nd overall in points, averaging just more than four touchdowns per game, I was told the organization sees its biggest questions on the offensive side of the ball. Some key points:
BSR: What are the biggest concerns on each side of the ball?
– The defense looks solid. I think the secondary looks strong, the linebackers look strong and the line looks solid. In the secondary, Terence Newman is solid, Adam Jones is solid. I think Anthony Henry didn’t look like he was 100% in the mini-camps, but he should be fine.
I think one of the rookie corners will be in the mix, though I’m not sure if it will be the one [Mike Jenkins] or the five [Orlando Scandrick]. One will be in the lineup this year and the other will be inactive. We won’t really know until they put on the pads at Oxnard.
I’ll add that I think the secondary will be improved with Dave Campo running that unit. They appeared to be better fundamentally. Nothing against the last coach [Todd Bowles] but I think Campo is an exceptional teacher and the guys know he’s got their backs.
BSR: So you don’t see an overhaul positon wise? I’m of the belief that they’ll stick with Ken Hamlin at the free and limit Roy Williams’ reps, getting him off the field when they’re in nickel and dime sets.
– Absolutely. Teams find guys like that. I also think the team is playing Hamlin right. Make him do it more than one year. If he plays well again, then you think about something long term.
BSR: What about the offensive side of the ball? Where are the weak links there?
– There are a few questions there. I think the team wants to get a better sense of its offensive line depth. They have Pat McQuistan going into his third year and Doug Free entering his second year and they moved James Marten to guard. They’ll give their starters some time but you may see the young guys going two and three quarters in some games so the team can get a really good look at them against top competition.
I also have some questions about backup quarterback. Brad Johnson is a smart guy but when he’s in there the ball goes sideways a lot. I think he’s here for 2008 but I’m sure the team has an eye out for another prospect beyond this year. 95% of the teams in this league are cooked if they lose their starting QB but if Tony Romo missed any significant time I think the Cowboys are an 8-8 team without him.
Without question, the biggest issue is at wide receiver. The team isn’t panicking yet, but I do think they have some worries about the #2 position. The offense stopped scoring touchdowns when Terrell Owens got hurt last year. Patrick Crayton is okay but he’s more of a #3 than a #2.
The team was looking for a young receiver before who could become a number one and could not find a fit.
I think they might need a little luck to fill that this year. It gets harder to fill holes once camp begins.
BSR: I know the Tom Landry Cowboys often filled holes with trades for veteran receivers. Lance Alworth, Billy Parks, guys like that. Might Dallas look at a veteran who’s dependable, in the way Keenan McCardell was for the Chargers a few years ago? And does this explain the Joe Horn rumors?
– My understanding is that Horn’s agent was given permission to shop him. The Cowboys have not called Atlanta.
BSR: So this is likely his agent trying to drum up interest?
– Yes, but if you asked me would I take Terry Glenn with nicks or Joe Horn, I’d take Glenn.
BSR: If the team can’t fill this need via trade, does this mean they’ll turn more to a guy like Felix Jones as a receiver?
– I think Jason Garrett is a guy who wants to open things up and get the ball down the field. I think one of the bigger questions is: how fast can Felix Jones learn what’s going on? He has to be a blocker, a catcher and a runner.
He’s got the potential to be a matchup problem, because he’s an explosive player, and because Dallas has T.O. and Jason Witten and Marion Barber, who can play every down, and they’re legitimate weapons, so defense can’t just lock in on him. But they will if he’s not clear on his responsibilities. It’s going to be interesting to track him in the one-on-one drills in camp, to see how he does against linebackers. Will they rag doll him, or will be be able to stay square and hold his ground?
If he doesn’t picks things up fast enough he’s Reggie Bush, a guy you draw up special plays for. And he has to be better than that. If all he can do is run special plays just for him, defenses will clue in very quickly that he’s in the game to get the ball.

1st!!!
I’m such and idiot. This is the second article that I was seeing BSR and was thinking that Raf was quoting some other article. I think Romo is the most valuable player on the team. That is, he is the most critical to success and we cannot afford to lose him.
The offense will be fine, coordinated by the brilliant mind of Jason Garrett. On they other side of the ball lies the weak link… Brian Stewart. He’s no Dave Campo, no Dom Capers, and his most relevant experience was as the assistant secondary coach in San Diego. The kid is in way over his head.
And, even though he’s nothing more than Phillip’s secretary here in Dallas, the hebetudinous and unqualified Stewart shouldn’t hold the title of Defensive Coordinator. That is an insult, and a drain on the rest of the staff.
Having the beleaguered Brian Stewart in the mix for another year, botching up the schemes and calls, is Tex’s biggest concern heading to the ‘Nard.
So, the ‘Tard is heading to the ‘Nard.
Yawn. Meet Tex’s new schtick. Same as the old schtick. Pick a designated whipping boy and never let up. Never mind that it contradicts itself. After all, how can the offense be in great hands if the ‘07 weak link Romo is still there? How, Tex, how?
Wade Phillips calls all the defensive plays. Did so last year, and will do so this year.
Of course, knowing that would mean actually paying attention to the way things run.
Doesn’t Drew Henson have a massage to give you or something?
Oh Tex… I knew you wouldn’t let me down.
So let me get this straight, Stewart… who I don’t even know calls the defensive plays, that might be Phillips, took a Dallas Cowboys squad that had pretty much the EXACT same defensive players from the year prior and went from 13th total defense to 9th is an insult?
He botched up schemes and calls?
When did this take place, and how would you even know this?
This goes beyond your usual rants, this time you just made something up.
Of course they could always have Troy Aikman come in, shake people by the helmet and will the defense to become the best… right? : )
Damn Raf…..
Did not expect that.
By the way that is a great article dude, good stuff.
I guess Jerry better watch the next season of “So you think you can coach?” for a new Defensive Coordinator…no football, no Tiger, talk about dog days of summer…
classic keys,
JJ can host a show similar to the one with trump looking to hire someone. guess all we’ll get this year is hard knocks, but maybe next year.
It would be nice to see Dallas sign a quality veteran QB. There are some B Grade signal callers wanting a chance at a starting job, maybe after it becomes clear that not all of them are going to get that chance this year Dallas will be able to sign one who offers better insurance then Brad Johnson.
The other news I would like to hear before training camp is T Glen reaching a deal with Jones and showing up for the first day of camp.
I am looking forward to training camp in three weeks. I am taking time off and going to 6 days of practices and the two preseason game walk throughs. I am working to get tickets to the SD game. I wished they were playing SD in game 3 instead of the first preseason game.
I wonder if Jerry added a bonus to Glenn’s injury clause for playing a certain number of games if that would allow Glenn to be contented (not dissimilar to the Ellis situation). That way, if he plays and plays well it is well worth the extra 1/2 million-Million and if he doesn’t then he will take the pay cut.
On defense the cowboys have 10 players with Pro Bowl potential.
I am not suggesting that all will make the Pro Bowl or play at that level this season, but I do think they have that potential. I list Pro Bowl potential with a PB.
Chris Canty PB
Tank Johnson PB
Jay Ratliff PB
D Ware PB
Z.Thomas PB
B.James PB
Greg Ellis PB
T. New PB
Adam Jones PB
Ken Hamlin PB
An argument can even be made for A. Henry & Kevin Burnett.
QUESTION for KC Joyner.
Do you think that the changes happening in sports media will put pressure on writers from traditional media like newspapers to write more of a teams company line? Will they present real news or team and corporate BS?
Trey,
There are a few people going to training camp practices and I know a few would also like to go to that San Diego pre season game. If you find any tickets available, please pass along the info. Much appreciated.
Our roster looks good at RB and some combination of Deon Anderson, Ronnie Cruz, Tony Curtis, and Martellus Bennett should be able to handle FB duties at a decent level.
Anyone interested in Najeh Davenport released by the Steelers as a big back? I believe he has played both RB and FB but despite his large size is more of a RB then FB. Could he contribute at FB? Hes not old so, he isnt exactly a progress stopper. The question is, is he better than what we have.
He has impressed me at various times, to tell you the truth.
Heres his info:
College: Miami (FL) Rookie Yr: 2002
Ht., Wt.: 6′1″, 247
Contract Status: Active
NFL Exp.: 6
107 -499- 4.7AVG. 5tds (2007)
Possible additional questions for either “the scout” or KC Joyner
1. Whats your opinion of the QBs that are either available or expected to be available? Is there someone that could beat out Johnson for the Number 2? (other than Tex’s boy Drew Henson, who we all know would have been an ALL-World Hall of Famer if he was ever given the chance…..Oh, he was given a chance………of then, well Brian Stewart..yea Brian Stewart)
On Tex
For some odd reason, I have liked Tex more then most. I cant say why for sure, but its kinda like watching Idiocracy or Airplane or Scary Movie.
For the first time however, I have to ask Tex why a man with such keen intelligence and a super evaluating eye….a man of men, a man who made millions in the oil business, has yet to back himself with the most tiny bit of credibility. Montecito? Really. I live nearby. Invite me. Nextdoor neighbors with Troy Aikman? Call your buddy and have him do a podcast with Rafael. Sure. Sure he is busy. Good excuse but doesnt allow you to back your sh#t. You made millions in the oil business?
If so, you have much much more then me, but don’t even stretch my wallet on the camp fund even though they could have doubled their profit for every dollar you gave.
Still, all I can do is laugh. Like a joke that isnt funny at all and yet you laugh anyway. Id sincerely sincerely like to think you have a true basis and just a very odd view of things, but without you even once backing up a single word….I doubt there is a single person alive that even contemplates taking you seriously which is entirely cool if its your goal.
It would just be nice, Tex, to get your real thoughts once in awhile.
The Santa Barbara hills are on fire, and Brian Stewart should NOT be the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys. That is an insult to every man/ woman who worked his/her way up the ladder, and never jumped from assistant secondary coach to “defensive coordinator”. Dave Campo is more qualified than B-Stew. Loose Bowles is more qualified than the beleaguered Mr. Stewart. Let’s call a spade a spade - the Cowboys going into the 2008 season with the inexperienced Brian Stewart as the figure head for this defense is like taking a knife to a gun fight. Stewart must go.
D Wac,
On one hand, I think you answered your own question by pointing out that Najeh is used primarily as a runner more than he is as a true fullback. On the other hand, in terms of bang for your buck, he has certainly given that when he has been able to stay healthy* or hasn’t coughed up the ball**.
* = In his first 4 years, he missed 25 games.
** = He’s fumbled 10 times on 450 some odd career touches. To be fair, 4 of those came in his 2nd year, and besides as limited as his touches would be with us, he might only cough up the ball once all year. You just wouldn’t want that hiccup to occur at the wrong time.
While you can never have enough weapons, having a guy like Najeh and not being able to get him 5-8 carries and/or touches per game would almost seem like a wasted opportunity. Especially when compared to fancy little “scatbacks” like a Reggie Bush who need special packages and gimmick plays grandfathered into the game to give them a chance to succeed, Davenport is very effective as a back-up runner. All that being said, he’s really a luxury who would be no higher than 3 on the depth chart as a back-up running back and unless he’s a ferocious blocker unbeknownst to me, his real value as a fullback would be as an extra receiving threat from time to time.
Of course, you really can’t bring up the man known as “Dookie” without mentioning that he gives the term turd a whole new meaning. Also, he’s the kind of class act who manned up and struck the mother of his son. But at the end of the day, isn’t taking a *ahem* squat in a stranger’s closet nothing more than cheeky hijinks especially when compared to All-American antics like inciting a riot that leaves a man paralyzed?
Arrrr………He’d be a nice insurance policy in the backfield but given his capacity for turdacious behavior and the fact that he’d be taking carries away from Tashard Choice and hastening our 4th round pick’s development, why bother? As far as I know, he’s just a big running back and has never been used primarily as a true fullback.
I am afraid Tex has his new shtick and we are fanning the flame, the Tony Romo gag has run its course.
Raf, its articles like this that make this the best Cowboy site on the net. Bravo!
That’s a great article, Raf. All the actual football talk is refreshing. And ‘Tard to the Nard’ … I like it. Maybe Tex can shoepolish that slogan on his Dodge Caravan for the road trip.
The mystery source brings up something that concerns me - Brad Johnson. When a team only takes 2 active QBs into the season, it tells me two things. That they are totally convinced the back-up could do the job if called upon. And that both guys should be able to remain healthy. I’m no sold on either point. Johnson was a very good QB in his day. However, the last time he played well in significant playing time was 2002. And oh yeah, he’ll be 40 this season. Neither of those ‘nuggets’ (sorry, I still have madmick’s Najeh Davenport story in my head) inspire confidence. I don’t see us leaving camp with more than 2 QBs, so I guess we will just need to cross our fingers and/or pray that Romo is the picture of health in 2008.
Oh Tex… you are a piece of work…
On QB, with all the speculation about Brett Favre coming back, I think we should trade for him. At least he would get a chance to win at Texas Stadium.
I couldn’t agree more about backup QB we need to be actively praying this is not out achillies heel.I wonder what Culpepper has left and how cheap he’d be,dude was freaking mvp four years ago and is relatively young still.Sounds like we may have dodged a bullet by missing out on Talib. Apparently he was involved in a brawl at the rookie symposium of all places.
Donny i’d would definately say negative to picking up dookie. Tashard Choice is a freaking stud and anything that interferes with his development would be a complete shame. There is actually a great video of him up on nfl .com from the rookie symposium yesterday seems like besides being a sparkplug he has a solid head on his shoulders. Our Rb stable is sick ,no worries there.
“Davenport is very effective as a back-up runner. All that being said, he’s really a luxury who would be no higher than 3 on the depth chart ”
So Choice becomes a wasted pick?
LOL.
Tex:
“That is an insult to every man/ woman who worked his/her way up the ladder, and never jumped from assistant secondary coach to “defensive coordinator”. Dave Campo is more qualified than B-Stew.”
Incredible, you just continue to build on the image that we already had of you….
Do you know that Dave Campo also jumped from being secondary coach to defensive coordinator?
Yeah, what can we expect of the village idiot?
“The team isn’t panicking yet, but I do think they have some worries about the #2 position”
Former first round picks Chris ‘Little Pacman’ Henry and Koren ‘I’m parched’ Robinson are both available and most likely better than a nicked Terry Glenn.
TCB -
I nearly spit my drink out on your shoe polish line. Nice.
Raf - articles like this make this the best site out there and are the reason you have such dedicated readers. They also make my small donation to the camp fund a pleasure to part with.
I’m excited about Felix Jones, and I think he’s going to have a lot of “Wow” plays (thanks Jerry), but I’m also really looking forward to seeing Choice play. I think he’s going to be a really solid back and a great all around back up / fill in player. Great value again on a mid round skill player.
Without any statistics to back me up, I feel like Crayton is a better slot or #3 guy. Does anybody (Raf or KC) have stats from 05-06 to compare to 07 production? I know he had bigger numbers last year, but did he really perform any better? You get the feeling that the hope is Austin or Stanback will be able to take the #2 slot and push Crayton back to the slot.
Now that we know Owens is here for a while, if Austin or Stanback can jump Crayton, I really don’t see the team getting an outside #2. With their development and Romo spreading the ball, I just don’t think it will be easy to find a great production / cost value in the spot outside of internal development.
Chris Henry has been suspended indefinately. The #2 wr position should barely be a concern compared to the #2 qb spot. I don’t know much about Robinson but the fact that he’s still walking the streets and isn’t at the very least a camp bodie doesn’t bode well for him.
What’s everybody think about Chris Simms as a backup (if he becomes available)? Would he sign as a backup, and would he have to sign a Glenn type injury waver in case his spleen gets blowed up again?
There just aren’t a lot of options out there for backup QB’s. I’m not saying we have to replace Johnson, but isn’t it great to be back to wondering about the long term status of the BACKUP QB?!
I was thinking the same thing but i do think his spleen was completely removed. I think he’d be happy to have a job.
Brian Stewart was “promoted” to Defensive Coordinator because he was the only one who was allowed to come over from San Diego, where he was assistant secondary coach. The Chargers secondary was awful under B Stewart, ranking 28th of 32 teams against the pass.
The unqualified coach, didn’t earn the promotion like Campo and millions of other hard-working American, he got the job by default.
Brian Stewart made a bold, yet regrettable, prediction at the beginning of his first season as Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator. He took one look at his defense during training camp and proclaimed: “I feel it should be the best defense in the NFL.” The Cowboys didn’t quite live up to expectations, finishing ninth in the league.
Jerry Jones was upset with defensive coordinator Brian Stewart after Stewart made the defensive linemen run sprints, without warming up, that left Jason Hatcher with a strained left hamstring.
Tex says… Stewart should never have gotten the job as defensive coordinator, and Jerry should have fired him last year in the ‘Nard when he almost ruined Hatcher. The time to fire the beleaguered “D Coordinator” is now.
Off-topic:
I read an article the other day on a site called coldhardfootballfacts.com in which they ranked the 32 franchises on an all-time basis. They’ve done an excellent job at taking into consideration all the factors neccessary to rank the teams. http://www.coldhardfootballfacts.com/Articles/11_2260_A_CHFF_epic%3A_all-time_franchise_rankings.html
It listed the teams all-time winning percentage as one of the criteria. Dallas ranked 2nd behind Miami. The top ten looked like this:
Miami Dolphins .580
Dallas Cowboys .578
Chicago Bears .577
Oakland Raiders .560
Green Bay Packers .557
Minnesota Vikings .549
New York Giants .544
Jacksonville Jaguars .543
San Francisco 49ers .542
Cleveland Browns .540
I wondered what it would take to overtake Miami for the winningest team of all time. A few quick calculator clicks told me the answer … 2 games. Considering how bad Miami looks, this could happen as soon as the second week of the season. But for sure, this distinction should belong to the Cowboys by sesason’s end. Chicago is lurking however, as they are only 1 game behind Dallas and 2.5 games behind Miami. Oakland is 15.5 games behind Chicago and not a threat anytime soon.
(For calculation purposes, the authors are counting a tie as half a win.)
Birdness,
Yes, I believe I mentioned Dookie would indeed “hasten the development of our 4th-round pick” so I agree in effect Choice would basically be a wasted pick if he and Dookie split carries at the 3. I guess my main point in all that rambling is since Dookie’s never been a true fullback, he wouldn’t be an upgrade at that position so the only point in having him on the roster would be if we ran the ball 40-45 times a game or if for some reason, we wanted to give Choice competition for the 3 spot which would make no sense. I probably should’ve made that clearer. No need for the Duke of Dookie when he probably wouldn’t even get on the field in half the games.
Of all the gloom-and-doom things to worry about, Romo going down isn’t even remotely on my radar. Although, given how talented the running back surplus and defensive units are stacking up, maybe it should be a little more pressing priority to get a better bus driver or guy with a little more live arm just in case Romo dinged something on his throwing arm and had to miss 2 weeks to a month at some point.
I don’t know if the game has passed Johnson by as much as it has (say) Kerry Collins, but I’d like to think there’s a younger alternative out there somewhere. Chris Simms might actually be better suited at being a back-up where he’s only asked to occasionally come in and perform in a couple of games and play well enough to possibly get himself another chance somewhere else down the road. Plus, if he were to come in, sign a 2 or 3-year deal and play well for a handful of games at some point, it could net us a draft pick (a 3rd-rounder?) from a QB-starved team willing to take the chance that he’s finally found his game.
As far as Simms goes, he did play well enough to put the Bucs in position to win a play-off game and he made a sick throw that should’ve been a TD late in that game against the Redskins but his receiver dropped the ball. Of course, he sucked out loud before rupturing his spleen the following season with a 1 TD and 7 INT in 2 ½ games. So who knows what he is or what he’s capable of being? I’d say the odds of him ever realizing his potential are slightly better than Matt Leinart; not all that good. I mean this is the same guy who had Major Applewhite breathing down his neck at Texas and who he never totally made Longhorn nation forget. But if there’s any sense that Johnson is as obsolete as Kerry Collins, I’d probably rather have a young gun as Simms as the back-up.
I don’t know about Culpepper. He seems cooked to me. Is it because his bad wheel was still jelly last year? Is his bad wheel finally totally healed by now? Aside from those two, who else is even out there?
While it says a lot about how talented the team surrounding Romo is that we think we still have a legit shot at winning it all with any passer who has any gas whatsoever left in the tank, I think it’s a bit too much of a Doomsday scenario to ever agonize over who the back-up QB is.
You got to hate it when Tex has half a point.
He gets more millage out of incomplete truths then a Soviet propaganda minister.
Tex is correct.
Brian Stewart did not earn the DC position.
Then again, Stew is not the DC…Wade is. Wade is the Defensive Coordinator. He designed the scheme. He tells the coaches how to teach. He calls the plays.
Stewart is simply the assistant…a guy that earned that right with SOB in SD.
Once again, Tex is much ado about so very little. You have to wonder if he ever has any real insight. Seems like a tabloid-reading, conspiracy-loving, ignorant sycophant if you ask me.
Tex needs to lay off the sauce.
“Jerry should have fired him last year in the ‘Nard when he almost ruined Hatcher….”
Kind of hard to fire a guy in California when training camp is in San Antonio. :0
And what retired oilman speaks of “the ‘Nard.”
Next, Tex will tell us of his time back in the day “in the ‘Nam.’” Admit it Tex, you’re 15 years old.
You;’re comedy gold, Tex. And like Oliver Stone, you’re not trying to be funny.
How do you know that Brian Stewart if he did not earn his job? He is not the first coach to get a bump to coordinator after a short stay as a position coach. We do not know he was adding alot of insight in the film study or planning sessions. Yes his SD pass defense numbers were not good, but they had a huge whole at RCB and they almost always were holding onto a lead and no one could run on them. Those SD defense saw a lot of pass attempts and made their fair share of turnovers with modest secondary talent. They also netted a lot of wins.
It’s just too easy to sit here from the outside and say someone did not deserve his job. The fact that Tex is making his case on is that the fans cannot see see any major contributions from our defensive coordinator. Not every guys contribution is obvious to outsiders.
Normally defensive coodinator is a high profile position; but in this case the head coach is the high profile guy on that side of the ball. I would find it problematic that I could not tell you B Stewarts contributions if last years defense had under perfomed, which it did not. The defense perfomed fairly well if you consider who are third corner was, Roy Williams still starts at SS and both starting corners fought through injuries.
This year the team has a lot more talent in the secondary and some of the young players are really comming into their own. If this defense is less then very good then we need to start looking for a whiping boy.
I have grown almost immune to Tex’s stupidity.
THE best thing about Tex is if you call him out on something that he can’t fight, he totally ignores it.
I’m still waiting on the reason why Troy Aikman didn’t win a super bowl every year he was a Cowboy.
Remember the “Troy would grab their helmet and will them to victory” speech?
He’s just something else. He’s so knee deep in crap that he has to wear a rubber suit.
At his most juvenile Tex is the sophomore who unduly delights in the heated expulsion of acrid gas in a crowded elevator. It’s not enough to cut loose, he has to fan his fetid flame in the direction of all and sundry. At times he is equal parts Cruella de Vil and Eddie Haskell. Having previewed his 2008 theme I fear the stench will get worse, and can only hope his latest rhetorical flatulence is not expelled with too much frequency. A little Eau Deu Tex goes a powerful long way. That said it is “refreshing” to note the new and calmer reaction to Tex on the part of some bloggers whom Tex formerly drove to a crazed state - akin to the reaction of the Chief Inspector to Clouseau.
As to the veracity of his much ballyhooed back-story, Tex may well breeze into the Nard in a Maserati with Troy riding shotgun. Alternatively he could be the 50-year old who pops his ‘78 Schwinn Varsity off the Greyhound before grabbing a Slurpee and corndog on the way to camp…hoping to get Spagnola’s autograph.
I love how people are waxing poetic on Tex now. I am getting the whiffs of Eau de Tex from here.
“As to the veracity of his much ballyhooed back-story, Tex may well breeze into the Nard in a Maserati with Troy riding shotgun. I know which one I’d bet on.
So when does his rants count as “too dumb for words” as the disclaimer mentions (or used to mention)?
In other news, the guy who plays Bozo the Clown just died, I guess Tex has a job opening he’s qualified for.
On topic, I think the D’s only weak spot is safety, Hamlin is good, but everyone else there is a question mark. I think the team should settle for nothing less than top 5 defense this year. Due to that, and the hopefully resurgent running game, we should be able to win games any which way we want. Now if we can just get the coverage units on special teams to work.
I have to say that I agree with the article. Our team is stacked but WR is an issue. I’ve been saying since TO went down last year. Crayton is not a legit #2. Hurd & Austin are barely #3’s. For all you that believe in these guys, keep believing. I think they can get by as long as TO stays healthy. But when it comes down to BIG games, facing top tier corners, they will not get open. Even if they are better than last year. We need a #2 dammit. Period. Where’s Alvin Harper when you need him? Heck, he wasn’t all that but he came up big in big games. How about that 92 playoff game against the 49ers? Crayton is a slotman, Hurd is too for that matter and Austin is really the only hope for stretching of the field. Stanback isn’t going to do squat this year. I hope I eat my words but he’s still way to green. Glenn? That’s not even funny at this point.

Chris Simms lifetime stats:
TD-INT 12-17
Passing yards 3,087
Avg. 6.3
QB Rating 71.2
I don’t particularly thrilled with our current # 14, but I am not sure if Simms is the answer to backup Romo.
JC56:
Didn’t Simms lost the whole spleen? He was splenectomized didn’t he?
I’ve always found Tex’s opinions amusing and sometimes they have a grain of truth in them. He definitely adds something to this blog, if only by riling everyone up which is most likely his intention.
Stewart did upset Jerry last year, but is Mr. Jones running practices?
So anyway, Happy Fourth of July. Here’s my list of most Patriotic Cowboys:
5) Cliff Harris - Had his 1970 rookie season interrupted by a stint in the army
4) Bob Hayes - Won two Gold Medals for his country
3) Chad Hennings - Air Force Academy graduate and Outland Trophy winner, flew an A-10 Warthog (also known as Thunderbolt) in Desert Storm
2) Roger Staubach - Naval Academy graduate who served in Vietnam. Also known as Captain America.
1) Tom Landry - Flew 30 combat missions over Germany in WWII. Had to crash-land his B-17 Flying Fortress. A great American.
God bless these Cowboys, and God bess America.
Here’s what NFL.com says about Mike Jenkins:
Compares To: CARLOS ROGERS-Washington…Like Rogers, there is no questioning Jenkins’ speed — he can stay with any receiver on deep routes. However, like Rogers, he is not a good tackler and tends to shy away from lending run support. Jenkins has some hip stiffness that is evident in transition and marginal hands to make the interception. He will bite on pump fakes and doesn’t have great ball anticipation skills. He might be a better fit at free safety, as his best assets are his quickness, making plays in front of him and generating a good press. Quite a few publications list him as the best cornerback prospect for the 2008 NFL Draft. If he is indeed the best, NFL receivers could be salivating. He is a fine athlete, but isn’t ready to star at the next level.
I haven’t watched him play, but if people are saying that he’d be a better free safety, I have some cocerns.
