Who Are the Best Cover Corners — 3 Year Averages

Posted: July 11, 2008 @ 6:00 pm

In part two of the series using K.C. Joyner’s YPA metrics for cornerbacks, I look at the best three year averages for cornerbacks who qualified for ratings in any of the Scientific Football Annuals from 2004 through 2007.

The pool expanded when the threshold was lowered from four to three years. 39 CBs qualified for rankings in the first instance and 64 in this group. Many of the names carry over from the first list, though there are some surprises.

Player-team YPA Avg.
1T. Shawn Springs - Washington 6.0
1T. Deshea Townsend - Pittsburgh 6.0
4T. Ken Lucas - Carolina 6.1
4T. Rod Hood - Arizona 6.1
5. Terence Newman - Dallas 6.3
6. Leigh Bodden - Detroit 6.4
10T. Champ Bailey - Denver 6.5
10T. Fred Smoot - Washington 6.5
10T. Quentin Jammer - San Diego 6.5
10T. Charles Woodson - Green Bay 6.5

Some of the usual suspects are here. Shawn Springs, Deshea Townsend, Ken Lucas, Terence Newman, Quentin Jammer, Fred Smoot and Charles Woodson carry over from the first list.

The must-discussed Champ Bailey shows up, with the more recent weighting increasing the value of his All-World 2006 season.

Who, however, are Rod Hood and Leigh Bodden? Hood was Philly’s nickel back, putting up standout numbers his last two years with the Eagles. They let him go and the Cards are happy to have him. His ‘07 YPA and his three year averages are better than any put up by the better known and much better paid Eagles trio of Sheldon Brown, Lito Sheppard and Asante Samuel.

Bodden may be a guy who helps Matt Millen hang on another year. He had stellar ‘05 and ‘06 YPAs for Cleveland. His average dropped a bit in ‘07 but his picks jumped to six. The Lions snapped him up in free agency and may have gotten a value signing.

Just missing the list: Charles Tillman of Chicago with a 6.6 average YPA and Oakland’s Nnamdi Asomugha, with a 6.7.

Next: Are YPAs like SATs?

so i am not sold on adam jones. yeah i think he is good but we can not assume he will be good. he had a decent first year. a good second year and a Pro Bowl level 2nd half of the year in that second year. but that does not insure everything. It looks good that be will play well but it is not a sure shot.

Jones showed steady improvement and he has a lot of reasons to really perform well now. As long as he stays out of trouble he will be a big plus for us.

    Becho,

Really the only thing Adam Jones has to be is better the Jaques Reeves. When you look at it, will he be at least 4th round value? If so, which I would be suprised if he isn’t, then Dallas has still upgraded their cornerbacks. Remember he was the #1 corner in Tennessee, he’ll be the #2 at best and possibly swap out with Henry alot. Jones won’t be a bad corner, he is too physically gifted to be horrible. Even still, thats why Dallas got a first round corner, and excellent value in Orlando Scandrick in the fifth. Dallas should have the most intimidating Dime and Nickel packages in the NFL.

I remember when we were on the clock at pick 5 in 2002, some people were expecting us to draft Jammer. He even worked out here. He didn’t pick up the game right away, but he seems to be doing OK now.
I remember we traded down and still got Roy. Who did we get for that trade?

    Counter,

That column was so stupid, it wasn’t worth leaving a post on that blog. It’s amazing how haters can be consumed by someone else’s success. On a golf blog to boot. Hopefully Romo will be pissing that guy off through February.

    ym,

Didn’t we get like a 5th round pick from the Chiefs or something to trade back a couple of spots?? I don’t think whoever we drafted with that pick, if we kept it, is still around now. We’ve only got Roy and Gurode left from that draft.

I was never, and am still not, a big fan of Jammer. He’s a decent CB but that’s about it. Made more for the days when you could actually touch the WR. Plus, I think he went right before our pick anyway so we couldn’t have gotten him. The Chiefs draft DT Ryan Sims with that pick and I think they cut him last year.

You look at the top 10 of that draft and now its kind of hard to see much there. Julius Peppers had about 4 really great years but has pretty much disapeared. Outside of that the top 10 stank; #11 Freeny could be argued to have been better then any of the top 10.
Of that whole first rd you only got about 5 guys that really seem to have been worth it.

There’s a post over on the Ranch that adds much more depth to the analysis than just YPA.
    http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=112&f=1786&t=2671390

Note that two of the best guys under that better analysis are Terence Newman and Adam Jones. Henry isn’t in the same ballpark as those two.

This guy Leigh Bodden is no joke. Apparently Chad Johnson said he was the toughest corner he faced in ‘05. He held Chad to 2 catches and 22 yards.
Quentin was drafted at #5 and we had #6. That could be why we traded down. I do remember Quentin had a good game against the Patriots and Colts last year in the playoffs. Of course back then, Roy was called the best athelete in the draft.

Got something to say?
