Glenn Situation Could Be Resolved Today
Posted: July 23, 2008 @ 1:46 am
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the Cowboys and WR Terry Glenn may resolve his situation today, either finding a common ground that will keep the veteran on the roster or release him.
I was put on alert yesterday that news could be forthcoming shortly but the team and Glenn clearly could not work something out. I was told by a source that “Glenn is better than any player available on the street,” suggesting that anybody pining for a Jeremy Shockey-like trade to fill the Cowboys #2 spot will be sorely disappointed.
– I was also told that the Brett Favre situation could heat up in the next few days. One source maintains that Tampa Bay remains the most likely landing place, because they appear willing to give Green Bay the first-day pick the Packers seek in exchange for Favre.

Rafael/Raul,
Will the radio shows be available as a podcast or download for your foreign readers?
How is the knee? Is he better in his current condition than any player on the street? I want him to be. He has always been such an underrated player. Great speed, quickness and hands.
SmegzOr,
We’re planning on that. We’ll let you know later this week.
I think Glenn might be released. Doesn’t sound like he wants to sign and I don’t think Dallas will budge. As much as I like Terry Glenn as a player I think he’s out of line and I agree with Jerry Jones on this one. Jones gave Glenn a bonus before the start of last year that was about $5 Million and he got 0 Starts and 0 Catches for it. Why should he throw another $1.7 Million at him? The $500, 000 settlement in the event of injury to the same knee seems more than fair to me.
Glenn should sign the waiver or be released.
Miles Austin; you’ll never ever get an opportunity better than this…
This Terry Glen thing is a real pain for me, here is a guy who got like Luke said $5MM for basically nothing last year. I believe he should sign his 500K contract deal and be real happy and go out a prove me wrong. I would like nothing better than to see TO, Witten, Glenn and company all on the field together but come on man fair is fair you got paid last year for NOTHING.
SIGN THE DEAL !!!!!!!!!!!!
I think a Glenn release or trade would be a blessing in disquise.
The worst case would be for Glenn to play and play well 1/2 the season, then go on and off the injury list the rest of the season. That would retard the development of his replacement and we would once again be a weaker team at the end than the beginning.
We need to develop our offense around the players likely to be available at playoff time. I recall reading (maybe here) the coaches speculated that Crayton was affected by Glenn’s return, a possible reason for his poor play. No one is making excuses, but that had to bother him, perhaps unconsciously.
I see that we’ve agrgeed to terms with Walden. A 4 year deal. Scandrick also signed a 4 year deal.
I’m surprised those guys didnt get 3 year deals because that would allow them to be a restricted free agent (”RFA”). My understanding is that a 4 year deal precludes them from becoming RFAs, which is only available after a 3rd year. After 4, you become an UFA. So in essense, Walden and Scandrick lose the ability to become a RFA and instead get locked into the terms of this rookie deal for their 4th year in the league. Usually, 2nd day draft picks will only do 3 year deals so they can get more money in year 4 as an RFA.
Surprising the team was able to get them to agree to those terms.
Ridge, good for the Cowboys, but I thought those terms were dictated by the round you were drafted in. Not sure about that.
Raf, now that you have ESPN credentials, does this mean that for NFL coverage, technically, you have replaced Sean Salisbury?
Congratulations on the opportunity. I have no doubt that you’ll be successful and continue to impress a growing audience. I’m looking forward to your coverage and continuing to support you and Raul.
I’m just excited. The draft, mini camp, training camp, pre-season, opening day… it’s like an eight month tease. I want to see some Cowboys football!
If Crayton went into the tank because he was pouting about Glenn then I want that POS Crayton OUTTA here right now.
Burm, no one said he went in the tank, rather that his demotion after playing well the entire season, could have affected him (as it could anyone). Nothing conscience or sinister, simply human nature doing its thing.
Tex would like to see Glenn gone as well. These young kids need a chance and Terry is one of few remaining Parcells moles who need to weeded out.
If Glenn ends up playing can anyone honestly imagine him not getting injured at some point this season? I can’t.
It’s not your money. Why do you guys care that he got $5MM? He signed a contract, same contract that Jerry Jones signed. It works one way for Ellis and the opposite way for Terry Glenn? Ellis shouldn’t break his contract and Glenn should?
Joey,
I could care less about the money unless it affects our ability to gain the players we need.
I am concerned that Glenn will not last the entire season. If he cannot, that will force a backup onto the field, one who has not had the season to grow into the job. I am also concerned that Romo and whomever that receiver is, will not have had the opportunity to develop any chemisty.
These are very real concerns and could be the thing that stops us, if indeed we are stopped.
Raf,
Congrats I have been out of the country and not as active, but the ESPN development is big time.
I had a thought on your prior series about a method for judging cornerbacks. KC Joyner’s metrics are good, but I think another interesting consideration to take into play would be the number or per cent of pass plays thrown away from a given CB. To me, a good indication of a ’shut down corner’ is if a pro team decides that a cover guy is dangerous enough that the OC designs a majority of their offensive plays away from that side.
That is shutting down an area of the field and dictating what an offense can do.
Is it possible to quantify over the course of a season what percent of passes thrown against a defense go to or away from a specific defender? And if the numbers indicate that certain defenders are intentionally avoided, that ‘avoidance factor’ should be taken into consideration as far as rating a CB.
So you’re saying that Glenn should be let go… so that the Cowboys could maybe find a player like Glenn, to pay him the money they’d pay Glenn?
Nice idea Jim. The % targeted would need to weigh the % of plays on the field otherwise part time nickle defenders would have better numbers then full time defenders.
Both YPA and % targeted would more meaining if they could be placed into a team defense context. A starting corner on a great pass defense that is avoided most of the time depite is likely a better corner then a guy who is targeted often in a bad pass defense even if the often targeted defender has a better YAC for a given season.
Nope, he signs the waiver or walks, a reasonable compromise in my mind. Everyone wants him if he is healthy obviously, but Jones among others, believe there is a potential problem.
If he signs the waiver, we work him hard in camp. If he is good, great, if not, we develop a replacement.
The fact that TG got 5$MM last season is irrelevant to whether he is worth his current contract. The team has the right to cut him if they do not think he is worth the money and then he gets the right to sign with who ever wants him. I hear Philly is looking for wide-out help.
I would like for TG to make it to camp and let things play out on the field. If he is healthy enough to play in camp and can perform well in preseason the chance that he contribute through out the season are decent. The team takes the money risk that he get hurt in camp, but gains the information they need to determine if he can play and seem likely to make it through a season. If they have real concerns they can let him go before the first game. Also there is a decent chance that someone loses a WR in camp and would be willing to give a late pick for him.
Trey, exactly.
rha,
Demotion?
What demotion did Crayton receive exactly? I don’t remember Glenn starting in place of Crayton in the play-off game or getting more snaps than Crayton did for that matter.
I don’t think Burm was suggesting Crayton subconsciously dropped that pass or dropped it on purpose to sabotage the team, but rather a guy that insecure and that fragile that he flakes out over a perceived demotion (especially with that big a mouth to boot) is simply a POS.
The team Dr’s must be advising Jones that Glenn’s likelihood of returning to form or remaining uninjured are very low. If jerry thought TG could be what he was 2 yrs ago, I don’t think he would think twice about paying him as expected, so he must be playing the percentages.
It sux for TG and I think it’s bad business for Jones and keeping the aura that Dallas is a great organization that players should want to play for. Both player and owner know that there is a chance for injury when the contract is signed, so why should the contract be altered unless the player is cut? Glenn can easily argue that he took a bullet in the name of the team, possiby ending his career, so why is he going to be doubly punished for his efforts and loyalty?
Gmoney is sick of Tex’s stupid mole comments. If Tex doesn’t like players that Parcel’s brought in here, then 80% of the team needs to go.
Anyone else make note of Luis Castillo’s contract extention in San Diego? Five years, $43.1 mil with $17.5 mil of signing bonus and guarantees. Castillo will get a signing bonus of $6.15 million and roster bonuses of $4.35 million, $4.75 million and $2.25 million for three straight seasons.
He was the same draft class and plays the exact same position as Canty. We now know what the market is saying that position is worth.
Canty’s current cap charge is the $2 mil RFA tender he signed. I wonder what that cap charges are for Castillo’s contract. Sure would be nice to lock up Canty, but thats not exactly chump change for that market contract.
gmoney,
i dont think he is being punished, like you see early in your post, JJ is taking measures to protect himself and the team due to the unique nature of glenn’s situation.
i think most people throw out his 5mil pay last year to check the “feel sorry for glenn” impulse some might have.
the question is, does JJ want him back bad enough to up the 500K offer a little (maybe 750K to 1mil) to get glenn to sign. i wouldnt be shocked if he does.
For those who suggest crayton will be pissed. Keep in mind he only got “promoted” when the number 2 WR went down with an injury. Thus, if the number 2 guy comes back, crayton falls into place at number 3. No one will view it as a demotion.
crayton has already been humbled IMO (by a drop, not by TG). he will also get plenty of playing time as a #3 WR.
he’ll be fine.
ridgelake,
thats likely what it will take to sign canty then. i still pull the trigger on that one more sooner than later.
young studs on the dline is a good thing.
anyone see what mcnabb is saying about his team’s chances this year? i hope dallas beats the sh!t out of them this year. i wished they played this sunday. he said philly should have beat dallas the first game and philly is favorite to win nfc this year. hahahahahahahahaha. it must be the painkillers.
Bringing in “Bill Parcells Guys” like Keyshawn, Richie Anderson, Jason Ferguson, Bledsoe, Vinny, and Terry Glenn was a mistake in the first place… Valley Ranch needs to be completely cleansed of the Tuna stench. Get rid of Terry Glenn tomorrow, let him roll down to Miami with the rest of those turncoats. Addition by subtraction.
Does anyone else here miss Antonio Bryant? That was a big Parcells mistake…
david,
bryant was on the team already when BP arrived.
i’d say dumping him was a good move, vice a mistake.
maxdoubt,
its good to see mcnabb is brimming over with confidence.
PFT is reporting, along w/ESPN apparently, that philly recently called GB to sound out acquiring farve.
Guess philly isnt as confident as mcnabb.
tashard choice is locked up, terms not disclosed.
The team and Glenn should split the difference and work it out. I agree with JJones but $500,000 is a little lowball.
Offer $800 and see if he takes . Otherwise, let him go.
Jarhead -
Yeah I know Bryant was drafted before Parcells. I just happen to think that Tuna played his usual mindgames with a talented young receiver and shipped him out at the first opportunity.
Bryant pretty much had the second best rookie season ever by a Cowboys wide receiver, and who can ever forget the 26 yard pass he caught from Quincy Carter with like 2 seconds left to put them in FG position to beat the Giants in that classic MNF game in 2003. Bryant was a big-play receiver for the Cowboys, and Parcells was so desperate to get rid of him we got Quincy Morgan in return. Quincy Morgan!
I know Bryant was a bit of a headcase but so was T.O. and those with decent memories will remember that Terry Glenn was once too. Recall that Mr. Glenn was suspended for most of the Patriots 2001 Super Bowl season. I think Glenn wasn’t even invited to receive his ring with the rest of the team.
Bryant ended up having over a 1000 yards with the Browns in 2005 with Trent Dilfer as his QB and averaged over 18 yards a catch with the 49ers and Alex Smith throwing to him. That’s almost as bad as your QBs being Quincy Carter and Chad Hutchinson!
I see the Bucs have signed Bryant to the league minimum. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the young (27 years old) and rested (he missed the whole 2007 season because no team would sign him) receiver have a decent year. All he has is Joey Galloway in front of him. Wait a minute…who got rid of Mr. Three-Straight-Thousand-Yard-Seasons? Oh yeah…
David,
comparing bryant to TO is a bit of a reach. if he was so good for the browns, why isnt he still playing for them? if he was so good for the 9ers, why isnt he still palying for them? would they not have kept him, in spite of his issues?
i wouldnt have minded seeing galloway stay, but i think TG filled that gap well. unfortunately he wrecked his knee, so i guess we’ll see what the young guys have to offer.
I hear what you’re saying, Jarhead. And I never meant to imply that Bryant was or ever will be a superstar of T.O.’s ability. But they have both been considered problem children, typical prima donna WRs.
I think the Browns and Bryant couldn’t come to terms on money, shocker. And there’s no question Bryant’s attitude probably cost him a roster spot with the 49ers and the entire 2007 season. I just like speculating, what if the Cowboys had never traded Bryant in a huff? I bet they still would have tried to get T.O. But maybe they would have eventually gotten rid of Bryant anyway, since Glenn was doing so well in 2005-06. Hey it’s still the slow time of year.
not for long. i predict things will pick up very soon, like tomorrow.
wait until a reporter sticks a mike in ellis’ face tomorrow on the tarmac in cali. wait until everyone talks about pacman (ummm, adam)and his training camp with dallas.
the roller coaster departs tomorrow, and dont plan on getting off until 2009.
David, I think Bryant falls into that “total f-up that needs to totally crash” and maybe never make it back. You gave some impressive numbers the guy put up……..but NOBODY would take him last year. Is that a small hint what a mess he is? Some of those train wrecks figure it out and take advantage of all the chances they’re given (let’s hope A Jones does). Some never do. At the point in his career he was traded, I doubt there is anything Dallas could have done.
Regarding our current WR’s, I have to believe the coaching staff sees more than we do in the young group. They just went through another draft and FA period without adding big name talent. One or more of the youngsters must be doing something right.
stillhate,
i still hate the giants too.
just in case you’re wondering…
wait, let me double check……..
nope, still hate em.
StillHate…you are probably right. It’d be cool though if Bryant could screw his head on right and make the Bucs and have a decent year - especially if Favre is his QB.
Bryant reminded me of that 2002 draft. I remember being pretty excited about it, all the pundits as I recall graded it high. And after the 2002 season it seemed like one of the team’s best since the Jimmy Johnson days - Roy Willams had a great rookie year, Bryant was impressive, Andre Gurode was an up-and-comer, Derek Ross had five ints. Even Pete Hunter and Tyson Walter saw some playing time and had the possibility of being contributors down the road. I even had high hopes for fullback Jamar Martin!
Shows what I know…Now only Gurode is playing up to expectations.
Anyone else see the quote from PCryton about Romo not being a workhorse in the weightroom, at SPNews?
It sounds like a bit tongue-in-cheek, but like he also means it.
“As long as he’s playing the way he does on Sundays, I guess it’s OK. But it sure hasn’t taken him long to take advantage of the benefits that come from being a star quarterback.”
Kind of bugs me. I assumed he was working out in the offseason as well as working on skills.
Hard for us to know how much truth there is in here.

Hey check this out guys…
Does anyone else thing that McNabb sounds a little idiotic in this?
We shoulda beat Dallas that first game? Ummm and why is that? Whats funny is he said the same thing about the Giants and the Redskins…
Its like where most QB’s will say, “yeah we need to get better, we let some games get away from us.” He acts like he’s never made a mistake and that everyone of those games he should have won.
Seriously… you can’t say you should have won a game that you lost by double digits. RIdiculous.
Realist… I’m sure he was just picking.
Relist Larry,
Crayton needs to look at himself first before he makes any kind of comment about any other player. That being said someone else here said the Romo looked soft in the mid section at a recent golf event.
Airforce,
no McNabb is right if the Eagles had scored one more touchdown and gone for the extra 30 point conversion they would have been right in that first game
What it sounds to me like is Crayton- who right now should SHUT his mouth since he dogged it when it mattered- is digging himself into a hole with his QB. Real smart move.
David: you really do not get it? You have joined tex in his idiotic hate all Parcells moves. And its pretty sad. As was pointed out- NO ONE wants Bryant- NO ONE. Does that not give you a hint? He was NEVER all that good. So what he got 1000 yds in a season. Means nothing. And clearly it means nothing to just about every GM in the NFL. Or he would have a lot more interest. When a guy is on his 4th team in 6 years its time to maybe think that it is mostly HIS fault.
Regarding Crayton’s dig that was no doubt in jest:
Romo’s never been a chiseled specimen. I’m sure I’ve seen him called short and probably even doughy in the midsection during last regular season whenever they’d show him warming up before the game. Who cares?
Besides, that’s all we need, Romo blowing out his shoulder trying to set a personal bench press record. Hey, Chunky Soup’s got huge arms…..and chronic shoulder problems. Wonder if there’s any connection?
If we wanted a champion powerlifter, we could always go hunt down former colossal 9er bust Jim Druckenmiller. As I recall, there was a real big deal made when he came out of college about all his Virginia Tech lifting records. He’s probably some meathead personal trainer or strength coach or something just as Ryan Leaf is an assistant at some community college.
I sure hope former small college quarterback Crayton isn’t a jealous little botch deep inside. I was watching NFL Network’s team preview of Dallas the other night and they showed it again and somehow Crayton even looked more wide open. Open enough to gain about 60 or 70 yards as Alvin Harper famously did once upon a time.
Funny, I used to side with McNabb during the debate with TO. Now, I’m starting to believe he is just a delusional idiot. To be fair, McNabb watched the same game I did because he sure as hell wasn’t playing it.
Saw Eric Parker got released. Would he add anything to our roster, if Glenn got released?
Here’s to some Cowboy tipping this fall…
By Joel HammondJHammond@pigskinpodcast.com Let’s get this out of the way now: I’ve never been a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Whether it was my uncles’ obnoxious ways of supporting them when the family all still lived in the same……
