Romo-commotion

Posted: August 6, 2008 @ 6:23 pm

He’s hiding in plain sight again.

Every day, the Cowboys defense sends blitzers at Tony Romo.  Sometimes, a single linebacker comes up the middle.  At other times, both inside backers will twist.  In other instances, the defense will overload a side and overwhelm the line from the left or the right.  Or bring a safety.  Or bring a cornerback.

And on every play, at least one guy will break free.

It simply does not matter.  Tony Romo has been feeling the pressure and finding the man that pressure leaves open:  the back releasing on a hot read;  the tight end who cuts his route short to take the quick pass;  the receiver adjusting into a slant, or stop, or fade or smoke route.

Romo finds them.  What’s more, Romo completes the pass to them.

As impressive as Terrell Owens has looked,  as dominant as Flozell Adams has been at left tackle, as deep as the secondary now looks, the biggest reason to believe in the 2008 Cowboys is the mental sharpness and consistency Tony Romo has displayed the last thirteen days.

The Dallas defenders are good, yet I can count on the fingers of one hand the times they’ve sacked him.  They force incompletions now and then and they’ve even picked him a handful of times.

Never, however, have they flustered him.  And that fact should leave Cowboys fans everywhere calm.

This is great to hear but i’m sure the offense knows that some type of heavy blitz is comming and WRs and RBs are running their short routes.

Either way I can’t wait to see this D on the field. The O will entertain, but the D will give you victory.

You know I was looking at DC.com’s little blog they have going, and I can without a shadow of a doubt say that we have the BEST and biggest cowboy fans on this site. Even though you have some crazy opinions now and then, some of the comments on that site are ridiculous.

This site without a doubt has the best articles, the best writer, and the biggest, most diehard Dallas fans on the net. Its amazing to me how much better this site is with less then alot of sites are with every bell and whistle in site.

I doubt there is any team site that is this in depth, even when nothing is going on, then this one.

Thanks Raf and Raul for all of your hard work this year.

    Great stuff guys!

Just waiting for Saturday evening. Just found out the NFL Network will have the Dallas/Denver game on next week. Great. I really want to see our younger DBs and our new TE. Why stop there. What about our new RBs. I’m stoked, and ready at last, for some football. Has Adam Jones been cleared to play in preseason?

    RAF,
Thanks for your response about Deon Anderson.
I’m glad you feel confident they’ll keep him, and since you’re there I assume you think he’s playing well enough to deserve a spot too.

Because I didn’t say it in my post, but although I really want him on our roster, that was assuming he was blocking well and catching the ball well.
If he’s not not going to be a GOOD FB we could let him go. But he showed a lot of promise last year.

    well cowboys fans,
here is some interesting notes from skin’s world.

Apparently Jim Zorn is looking at implementing some new uniform color schemes (no new colors, just differenet uniform color combinations).

Well skins fans are in a huff b/c they dont want dallas to come up here and be able to play in their white jerseys.

dont they know romo is a trend breaker?

Just finished watching hard knocks, and I have to say that 6 ball punt catching trick that “Pac” & Crayton pulled off is pretty damn impressive…
Some good insights into some of the things you don’t see normally, good show.

On Romo, its great to see that he is still improving, and after last season thats saying alot. Won’t be surprised to see him break some of his own records this season. Is it Saturday yet?! I need some football!

Airforcebat2: Very much agreed!!!!! This is the best sports site on the net period!

Raf & Raul, Thank you for all you guys do!!!

What a dud “Hard Knocks” was! OK, I was stoked and loved every minute.

But talking about a zero for insight, I get more on DMN blogs…and that’s truly sad.

Fighter: Remember that show really isn’t about insight, pluuuuuuus you gotta remember not everyone watching the show are fanatics like us.

My dad is a huge Dallas fan, but he doesn’t get online and check updates every day.

Haha, as a matter of fact, he just waits for me to tell him everything thats going on. Matter of fact thats generally what the middle of our conversations consist of.. first about job and mom, the football, then bye.

What is the general opinion of Erik Walden?

I thought it was a throw away draft pick; someone we could have had as an UFA. But with some of Raf’s commentary, I think he could be a diamond in the rough.

Does he have the athletic ability to become a force in this league with the coaching we have? He also benefits from having three guys in Ware, Spencer and Ellis that can give him an example (OK not Ellis’ whining) of how to perform at a high level.

    Raul/Raf,

Is there somewhere specific on the site that we can look for a link to listen to a podcast of Tuesday’s Sports Doctor’s Radio show with Raf, Luis and Drew Pearson?

I wanted to call into the show today, but I got so wrapped up in the details of what K.C. was saying, I forgot my question. Great show and I echo the sentiments above that this is the best DC site period.
    Thx.

    Gmoney,

Raul put it up this morning but we pulled it down because it plays at different speeds on different browsers. It sounds fine on his but sounds like the Chipmunks on mine. We’ll put it back up once we figure out what caused this.

    Fighter,

    RE: Hard Knocks:
If they bogged into details and insight, (1) it would be boring for the casual fan - which most people actually are and (2) it might give the opposition some advantage that the team doesn’t want to give.

It’s all about the stories and the personalities behind the team and camp. I thought it was cool to see inside some meetings and get to see some personalities we previously wouldn’t know about. Tank seems surprisingly vocal. In general, I laughed out loud several times.
I thought they made Coach Phillips look a little goofy. I didn’t like seeing Pacman involved in “Hi-jinks” (only because it can only lead to bigger and darker things), not sure how I feel about Dave Campo getting pranked by his guys and although I see the humor, I didn’t think the banana microphones made them look particularly good.
However, all in all, as a Cowboy fan, worth the watch.

BTW: Insight is left to the BlueandSilverreport!

Jarhead (and anyone else who is interested):

The Redskin uni thing is no small matter. Just last week I heard a really interesting story told by Mr. Cowboy, Bob Lilly, on Sports Radio 1310 the Ticket’s morning show.

Lilly said that in the days when he played, most teams wore their colored jersey’s at home. The Cowboys wore a Blue Jersey at home back then. However, being dark colored and a slightly different material, the jersey was hotter than the road “whites”. Dallas seemed to lose more when they wore those Jersey’s and they became known as the Bad Luck Blues. When George Allen was coaching the Skins, he wanted to play a mental game with the boys, so he decided to have his team wear their white jersey’s at home and force Dallas to wear their Bad Luck Blues when they played up in Washington. This caused a stir on the issue and the detail about the colored jersey’s being hotter became public knowledge. Soon thereafter, most teams started wearing their whites at home, forcing the visitors to wear their dark jersey’s for the advantage it created on the field.

So if Zorn wants the Skins to wear their colors at home, (1) he’s not a student of the games history, (2) he’s messing with a tradition that was started by the Skin’s themselves and (3) he could be giving his opponents an advantage (not to mention the psychological advantage I think it really would give Dallas).

So would Pennington be an upgrade over Brad Johnson? At first blush, I thought yes. But the more I think about it, the more I don’t think so. BJ has been here for 2 years, everyone knows him, he knows the system. The knock on him is his arm strength and his age. Pennington’s knock is arm strength. And he’s 32 with multiple surgeries on his throwing shoulder.

Pennington will likely land somewhere after he’s cut to make room for Farve. But I don’t think it will be here.

Sorry for the somewhat off-topic post, but I thought you DirecTV subs out there might appreciate hearing about this. They just started offering NFL remotes today - my Cowboys remote is on the way!

    Image:
    https://www.directv.com/images/assets/productcatalog/09-remotes/NFL/dallas_cowboys.gif

    Ordering page:
    https://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/mydirectv/cep/myProgrammingRemoteControls.jsp

The ordering page is kinda messed up, it only lists a bunch of $30 remotes. I had to go through the list one by one and add them to the cart and then remove them until I got the right one. When I found it, it was the 14th one down on the list. Hopefully they have that glitch fixed before any of you who might be interested get there to order.

Got something to say?
