Cowboys @ Browns: Pick 45

Posted: September 6, 2008 @ 2:34 pm

Now, the immediate question: who do the Dallas Cowboys put on their active and inactive roster tomorrow?

Special teams tells the tale.

Special teams (3) — Folk, McBriar, Ladouceur. No questions here.

Offense (21)

  • QBs - 2: Romo, Johnson
  • RBs - 3: Barber, Jones, Choice
  • FB - 1: Anderson
  • TEs - 3: Witten, Curtis, Bennett
  • WRs - 4: Owens, Crayton, Stanback and the newly promoted Mike Jefferson
  • OL - 8: Adams, Procter, Gurode, Davis, Colombo, McQuistan, Free, Berger

Dallas might only keep 7 here and the last player is up for grabs. Procter can backup at C, and McQuistan can back up at LG and RT. Free is the LT reserve. Montrae Holland would be on this list but I’m not sure he’s ready to play yet. Berger gets the nod instead, though Dallas could go with just Free and McQuistan if they need another coverage guy (more on this in a minute). McQuistan joins Procter in the middle of the kickoff return wedge, so he’s a definite.

Defense (21)

  • DL - 6: Ratliff, Spears, Canty, Johnson, Hatcher, Bowen
  • LB - 6: Ware, Thomas, James, Ellis, Carpenter, Rogers

This unit is thin because of injuries. Anthony Spencer is a loss but Kevin Burnett might be an even bigger one since he’s one of the core guys, along with Bobby Carpenter, Justin Rogers, Pat Watkins and Keith Davis who play on every unit except field goals and extra points.

  • S - 4: Hamlin, Williams, Watkins, Davis, (Brown?)
  • CB - 5: Jones, Henry, Scandrick, Ball, Jenkins

I have nine DBs here but the injuries to Burnett, Miles Austin and Sam Hurd could have all ten playing tomorrow, with the Cowboys maybe going with seven OL. Were Terence Newman healthy I think the Cowboys would deactivate Jenkins and use Ball as a gunner, but I don’t think they’ll deactivate Jenkins and leave themselves with only three dependable CBs. They could deactivate Ball, but their punt coverage depth on the edge would be suspect.

Terence Newman is listed as 50/50 but if he didn’t practice the last two days, I’m guessing he’s not playing. It think a setback with his groin injury is too risky. If he tries to come back before he’s fully healed and aggravates his groin tear he’s out another month.

Inactive - 8: the first seven are fairly easy, given the injury report:

  1. Miles Austin,
  2. Sam Hurd,
  3. Kevin Burnett,
  4. Anthony Spencer,
  5. Montrae Holland,
  6. Terence Newman,
  7. Kyle Kosier

The final inactive will be either Joe Berger, Courtney Brown or Alan Ball.

Update:  It appears that Kevin Burnett will play, which is a boon for Dallas’ special teams and nickel package.  That increases the chances that two of the guys from the Berger/Brown/Ball trio won’t play.

He’s not on the injury report and I’m a bit surprised. But if can play that’s great. That would likely put Brown or Ball on the sidelines, but again, Newman’s health will dictate a lot.

I read on Rotoworld today that it looked like Newman was going to be inactive, but you know what, thats why Dallas grabbed all that CB depth.

It sounds like Jamal lewis will be out which will be a very serendipitous occurance if Burnett is indeed out. I think the rest of the boys can handle a depleted browns team. We will need spencer burnett and newman next week so I am glad they will al seemingly get another week to heal up.

Tex is getting tired or China Doll Newman. The over-rated CB is oft-injured, and when healthy, the big plays just don’t get made. Terrance is more hype than performance and that has to change.

Not a surprise to see Jefferson back-he seemed like a decent prospect-I still can’t believe no other teams snatched him up.

Although there’s no doubt we’ve got the more talented team, I really think this game is going to be close and come down to who can score in the 4th. We’re on the road, and it’s the first game, which can always be shaky.
But also, I think Cleveland, injuries or not, provides some matchup problems for us, and sometimes it comes down to matchups, not just overall talent. We need Ware to provide pressure, but they’ve got a very good LT. Spencer being out hurts us. The passing game is strong for them, and our secondary can not be expected to be ready. We’re counting too much on rookies at RB, TE, and DB, and mistakes will happen.
The Cowboys have advantages, but so do they-I hope the Boys don’t continue the habit of slow starts like last year, because the crowd and the Browns will pick it up if they sense an upset!

I see an uncomfortable, squirming 4 qtrs. with a 3 or 4 point win-lots of FG’s, I hope Folk’s got his mojo workiing (talk about another guy who deserves a reworked contract!) 26-23.

Stop-I’m at the point where I won’t even acknowledge those posts anymore-we need to all put T on ‘extinction’, a behavioral psych. technique of ignoring unwanted behavior, thereby not rewarding it with attention.

    “Serendipitous” — nice word!

Easy AFB, he just meant he is greater than newman in weight

I dont buy this Newman stuff, they said he was practicing ten days ago, and not a peep, even said he had a great practice one of the days, things are not lining up, the falsified report, yada yada yada.

I can hear Troy tomorrow, Terence Newman will start today, cant wait, I just dont understand if it is a smoke screen, why they are going through this much crap, we are better than them, even without newman.

I am extremely excited to see Felix return KOs, Eatman wont shutup about it, and he even predicted Felix will take back the first one to the house. I hope he is right, I also hope we get the ball first, that way the defense doesnt go right back out there. Thats the only downside of Returns for touchdowns, especially if they come after a long drive.

    From the last thread, thanks.

Hey Raf. Will the game online chat be activated tomorrow??

I just don’t understand this thing with Newman. Like Tony said, first he’s practicing and looks good and then he’s probably going to be inactive. I don’t know WTF is going on with him.

  29. 29
    David on September 6th, 2008 10:57 pm

Come on, Tex, you can’t be serious. Newman started every game from 2003-2006 and while he did miss five games last year, he had 4 ints and at least three of those were HUGE plays (70 yard return against Buffalo, game winner against Redskins and 51 yard TD on Thanksgiving). Hardly a “China Doll.” Was Deion a wuss when he missed a combined 10 games from 1997-1999? You must be just trying to get our gander up. Or is it dander?

A little over 16 hours until either Felix Jones or Joshua Cribbs returns the opening kickoff for a touchdown…

Tex really likes to get everyones goad. Works everytime. Well, here is my response to him. Without name calling, everyone has their right to an opinion. Some are intelligent, thought through ideas or thoughts. Some are not thought out and rash, emotional opinions.

Guess which is your opinion Tex?

Don’t worry, you only have one to choose from so it can’t be that hard.

    THEAIRFORCEBAT2 on September 6th, 2008 11:14 pm

I agree torchin. For some of you who are new, this is him all year long. I think AFCowboy said it best, Tex is a board troll.. he says things that are going to get people going. It used to be me quite a bit.

  32. 32
    Martyn on September 6th, 2008 11:22 pm

    Kam

I’ve said it before and will say it again. Newman should sit until he feels 100%. In my mind it makes no sense to send a guy out there if he’s coming off an injury like this and isn’t all the way back.

However, I’m not sure how long he’s been practicing for or if he’s taken part in team drills.

  33. 33

Merry Christmas everybody! Our season has begun. The Captain is back! I’ve only posted once since I had a shit fit when we gave Mariano Rivera..I mean MB3 all that money. But let’s let by gones be by gones. We’ve all had likes and dislikes this off season. Wether you threw up when drafted Bennett instead of taking a WR. Or jabbed a phillips head screwdriver into you liver when we decided to gamble on Adam Jones, it’s all in the past now. We are all on this site for a reason. One reason. The reason starts today. This season comes down to one simple thing. Heart.

    Go Boys!

Don’t try and throw Henry in with Newman now.

Finally, didn’t he make his first Pro Bowl last year?

Injury prone or not, (and he isn’t) I don’t want him on the field until he is 100%. Its a long season, and we will need to finish strong. It bothers me that they’re even going to play Stanback with his hurt sholder. But I guess they don’t have much choice there. They do have a choice with T-new. :diecle:

    madmick on September 7th, 2008 11:39 am

I can’t see the offense not scoring 31, and that’s not even factoring in a pick-six or even more scoring opportunities set up if Anderson has an outright stinker or is forced to go big on every possession in a shoot-out resulting in a handful of picks.

Listen to Chris Berman on ESPN and he’s already given the Patriots a winning record, the division, and probably going to have the best record in the AFC. Ditka looked at him and said, “What do you mean the division?? They haven’t even played yet.”

  56. 56
    THEAIRFORCEBAT2 on September 7th, 2008 11:50 am

Berman is senile. He would be ok if he knew anything about the NFL.

I don’t know that Ditka’s in a position to give anyone a disbelieving stare considering his Super Bowl pick was the Titans over the Giants. I never thought Berman was funny and he’s also been blatantly anti-Cowboys and a rampant 9ers groupie.

Strahan did pick Dallas to win the whole thing on Fox’s pre-game show. That reminds me of my favorite moment from any of the pre-game shows courtesy of Sterling Sharpe in his 1st year working for ESPN in ‘95 on opening day: “The Green Bay Packers win the Super Bowl………when the Cowboys move to Canada!”

  60. 60
