Why the Vagueness on Newman’s Injury?
Posted: October 7, 2008 @ 11:51 pm
The team’s website is reporting tonight that a new MRI indicates Terence Newman has an “abdominal irritation,” and is on a week-to-week review, with “a possible sports hernia.”
Dr. Luis Rios, my partner on “The Sports Doctors” says this is the sports equivalent of fuzzy math.
“What is an abdominal irritation? That’s not a diagnosis. You either have a hernia or you don’t have a hernia. This is what concerns me. The team said in the preseason that he had a groin injury and now they’re saying it’s a hernia. Maybe he had a hernia the whole time…”
Rios isn’t buying the story that maybe he has a hernia. “The doctors have to know one way or another… The diagnosis needs to be confirmed, because time is of the essence. If this is a symptomatic hernia rest won’t cure the problem. Instead, he should consider surgery so he’s back in time for the end of the season.”

Did we hear when this happened?
Was it in practice last week or during the Washington game where he had the worst game that I think he has played in years.
TNew’s injury is fishy.
Now for other things that smell…
Raf,
What of this Nevada/Acorn business? Someone had to drag the Cowboys good name into the political fray?
At least we are better suited to deal with him being out this year compared to last year - with Jones, Jenkins and Scandrick.
But we do need Newman healthy in time for the playoffs.
get the surgery now so we have him for the stretch run.
I think the DBs will benefit from the experience gained. I hope it isn’t too painful.
What is the recovery time for this surgery?
starstruck,
I know that ACORN is a political football. I don’t know much about them beyond that but I do a little bit about canvassing. I had my cell phone stolen by a canvasser several years ago. The organization was a reputable one but they had hired a lot of people for short term, low-paying jobs and they had not vetted this volunteer. They were embarrassed and bought me a new phone ASAP.
The impression I got reading that story is that some volunteer didn’t want to hit the pavement but wanted to get paid and just filled out some forms with player names, turned them in and got caught.
But I have no way of knowing. And really, what do the Cowboys have to do with this? Just shows the idiot canvasser liked them — or maybe didn’t like them. Oh well.
Back to the sports diagnoses. I also recall Anthony Spencer had a “bone bruise” which is another fuzzy, catchall term and was supposed to be day to day and then had his knee scoped for a loose body about a week and a half after the original diagnosis.
I don’t get why teams give the cloak and dagger. If he really has an injury announce it and treat it.
uh oh
what happens when henry gets his yearly injury as well?
our hope lies in pac…good thing he has security with him wherever he goes
A bone bruise isn’t really a catch-all term.
I understand bruises are soft tissue injuries. You break blood vessels and the pooled blood causes the discoloration.
Bones are fractured or broken. Yeah, you can get bone bruises, when the bone suffers an impact and does not break, but the doc was complaining about this in the summer, that the *term* bone bruise is often used as a catchall. For instance, Spencer was originally diagnosed with a “bone bruise” which was later changed to floating cartilage that needed to be scoped.
Those injuries are not similar. That’s his point.
Maybe Newman is suffering from a broken heart? No wait, maybe with all his new millions he broke the bank? We know for sure he had broken concentration against Santana Moss. Newman’s had a tough break with injuries lately. He’s hoping he catches a break real soon (Newman would probably drop it though).
Broke.
Broke.
Break.
I just broke my break.
Vagueness is an under appreciated word (much like unappreciated is under appreciated) and my thanks to you for using it. It can be a tricky one to spell sometimes (late at night brain frazzled, delirious etc) but when you get it right oh how sweet it is!! The V, the U hiding behind the G, and of course the NESS. Simply brilliant, the written word can be such a beautiful thing.
I mean think about it. What would vagueness be without the U and first E. I’d tell you what it would be, it would be vagness. Vagness.
And then the heading would be: “Why the vagness on Newman’s injury?”.
And we’d be inundated with childish jokes about how the vagness of Newman’s injury is because he’s a wuss. And nobody wants that.
Whoops, I got edited by the boss. He changed the word I originally used to Wuss. It ruined my punchline but you can probably guess what it was. It was close to wussy.
Luke - go to bed and sleep it off.
The “leader of men” guy tried to clear what’s left of his name on here back at the end of the last thread. and yes, i know it is succinct not succint.
Luke,
I think it’s more likely that Newman was trying to cover one of the game’s fastest wideouts while dealing with a hernia, but we won’t know for sure until we get the MRI back on his bank.
Raf, whats with the GayCowboyCentral.com add? Speaking of which, I wish the home game touchdowns wouldn’t be followed by those 2 guys dressed like cowboys with huge cowboy flags, running back and forth in the inzone. It looks, well, gay. Whatever happened to the old funny guy with the six shooters? I liked him better. T-new injured. Crap!
Anyone else going to the Arizona game? This will be my first regular season NFL game. Yeah! Can’t wait.
Raf
I might have a little info to shine some light on it. I heard someone on either The Ticket or ESPN radio say that the MRI revealed a “weakening in the lower abdominal wall”. He said that this is typical with someone who has a nagging groin injury because of the way in which that person will favor that side of their body when walking/running. I suppose that it could lead to a hernia?? He said that’s why it’s unlikely Newman will see the field until he’s 100%.

Crazy Ray died
Newman’s only really had injuries in 2 years. He didn’t miss much of the season last year either.
I find it ridiculous that a player can have one bad game and some of you act like he is now a horrible player.
So we’ll call Newman “overrated” and say he sucks until he makes a play?
The week before he played great against Green Bay.. but one game will erase an entire good career.
Luke ~ pass the pipe over this way when you’re done with it…
Newman injured, again. Good thing we drafted a couple db’s this year; looks like we’ll need them to step up.
I’m glad we moved on from the last thread - everybody must have their period this week.
I love this comment by Wade Phillips,
Newman sat out Sunday’s game after popping up on the injury report Friday afternoon as questionable (groin). Did he aggravate the injury he originally suffered the first week of training camp?
“I don’t know,” Phillips said. “You’d have to ask him.”
That’s why they pay him the big bucks, especially after his last game.
Pacman is getting better. I want to see more of Scandrick. He may be our Vasher.
Scandrick aint no Vasher…..let’s just hope Pacman, Henry and Jenkins can cover his spot. Someone should also tell all of them to turn for the ball when the receivers turn their heads…. maybe, just maybe then they’ll intercept a couple and teams would be a little bit more afraid of throwing against us. Shmucks!.
Slide,
That explanation sounds plausible. I hope it’s just a weakening and not a full-on hernia– that could take 10 weeks or more to come back from.
This is disappointing news, but it makes me very grateful for the additions of Pacman, Jenkins, and Scandrick, who seemed like luxuries at the time.
I hate the injury vagueness too. I think WP is just trying to copy the Pats. Hasn’t the NFL tried to make teams be more forthcoming about injuries.
Ha! Luke you are the man I am gonna go out on a limb and say, probably much to afb’s chagrin that we will be better for this injury. The kids look fine and will only get better due to Newmans Vagness, yup i said it. I didn’t see a dominating performance this weekend but i also didn’t see anyone getting burned on double move for 50 yard completions. Newman is currently appearing to be quite the vag and while no one doubts his ability when healthy he is a giant hindrance to this defense when trying to grit it out. He deserves the chance to get healthy and our defense deserves to not be hamstrung by his playing at far less than 100%.This is exactly why some of us were so vociferously calling for then defending our Db picks over wr picks. We will be fine the next game will be a test but the st louis game should be a clinic. Lets all remember to breathe.
If Newman was hurt and can’t play, then why was he on the field doing the Ole! matador routine with every player in burgundy?
Plausible scenario:
Williams and Newman are out of the secondary and the defensive line can’t get pressure. That, folks, may mean 3rd place in the NFC and possibly no playoffs. 3rd place and no playoffs will ratchet up the media pressure on Big D to unheard of proportions, and almost certainly means TO melts the f down and Phillips gets fired. A TO meltdown and coaching change slams closed the near term window on the Super Bowl.

I don’t totally disagree with you stoproyce.
I never think having the “kids”, who are in their early 20’s and not waht I would call kids at all, getting more experience is a bad thing.
I think if Newman was healthy, you couldn’t say that him not being in there is better. I don’t think you can honestly say that the team is better without their #1 corner.
Joey,
Anything could happen. I don’t know if you can guarantee a TO meltdown either.
That seems like alot of assumptions on your part. Plus even if Wade was fired, Garrett would become the head coach. Wouldn’t be that big of a staff change.
Phillips is the in-house 3-4 guru. If he leaves, then the D gets an overhaul.
Thats probably one of the more negative points of view I’ve ever seen.. it could happen but jesus that would be one of the worst scenarios ever.
This is still a good football team. They went 13-3 last year, so its not like they can’t win against anyone.
Yeah, its not there isn’t other 3-4 coordinators out there though.
Yeah, those are wild assumptions. I doubt they’ll come to pass, but they are more possible today than I thought they were before the Redskins game.
We’re 5 games in. The D is what it is. It’s all starters in the front 7, and we’re seeing fundamental problems week after week. The secondary is inexperienced and patchworked and nothing vaguely, remotely, nearly resembling what I thought they’d be in terms of ability or execution.
blah like*
Eh,
I don’t know how you would say “patchworked”. I mean there isn’t a corner on the team that is worse then Nate Jones or Jaques Reeves.
Young. Sure. But this is a team that won 13 games last year with a defense that was pretty much the same.
It might mean that Dallas has to score more. I don’t know. Washington and NY will lose some games. Does everyone agree on that?
I don’t necessarly agree that the D is what it is. Or I’ll optimistically say I hope it isn’t. The defense is right now a good D. I’ve seen defenses get better throughout the course of a season, hell they got better throughout last season.
I honestly think Dallas goes 12-4. Or even 11-5 would get them into at least a wildcard.
4-1 is a pretty good record.
As good as the NFC East is, I just don’t think that Dallas won’t win an NFC East game again this year.
I’m not worried about the Defense because of 2 reasons:
- I believe in the coverage schemes, they use off coverage because that’s what Wade likes to use (keep the play in front of you and you can see when the ball’s in the air and make a play) and he’s also using some press too. The problem has been execution, there have been a lot of mistakes and a small improvement in execution would be a huge improvement in stats.
- I believe that defensive stats are overrated. In the last thread Charb compared the Cowboys and Titans Defenses, well, another point against such comparison is that you can’t compare both Offenses… Against the Cowboys you need to take more chances and be more productive and that affects the totals for the Cowboys Defense, especially when they have execution problems.
I do think that the team has some yellow flags and they need to work on them before those turn red:
- It’s good that Romo’s eyes aren’t all over his intended receiver all the time and that at times he barely looks in the direction of his real target, he’s taking a risk there and it’s going to cost him more interceptions, he needs to pay more attention to the coverage schemes.
- Speed continues to give troubles to the OLine, they can dominate speedy lineman in several plays, but those guys will make them look bad in several others… There’s still too much contact before the line of scrimmage on running plays…
- Crayton isn’t making a push to keep the number 2 role and if he keeps up he’s going to be pushed back by another player that hasn’t looked much better (Austin or Hurd).
- Barber and Jones keep bouncing most carries outside, the Redskins have been the only team capable of stopping them (they would have been in position to stop Felix had he been given the chance, they didn’t gave the running game a chance with a lot of 7 and 8 man fronts), I wouldn’t be willing to bet on them being the only team by the end of the season… They look a bit predictable to me.
- Ratliff is the only guy playing up to his potential in a consistent basis along the DLine. Canty, Spears, Tank and Bowen have looked great, good, average and bad… They’re a question mark.
- I know that the injury problems for Spencer haven’t been of help, but they need to work on the rushing LBs, this team rushes 1 or 2 LBs in close to 80% of the snaps but teams have been able to predict and pick the ILBs when they rush, there’s been only one play in which Thomas could rush through the OLine and rush the passer into an incompletion. Once.
I already talked about mistakes in coverage and I know that I’m nitpicking in some of what I’ve said.
Raf,
The ACORN thing was just one of those Leonard Cohen moments for me, if you remember that. Two worlds colliding that I’d prefer not come together. The Cowboys names mentioned in the same breathe of debate/campaign coverage. I heard it on FOX News in the background, and for a moment I thought I was tuned in to ESPN—the horror. So, it was like a double-whammy. I sought you out for guidance and more reasonable things and you came through. Thanks.
You are right we are better with our #1 if he’s healthy. If he’s not and is on the opposing teams best reciever then, not so much.I am not even sure he’s our #1 anymore. It’s not that i am trying to be a hater or anything but since that contract i haven’t seen much of our vaunted #1. I’d go so far to say that A.Jones is our #1.Newman has yet to show anything since becoming paid like it.The D will get better. The crucible of the nfc east will break some and strengthen others, luckily our depth has us positioned at least to be okay. I believe three teams will make it and I do think some of the shine will come off our divisional opponents much as it has rubbed off of us. Adversity can build character or reveal softness .I guess we will find out which it will be soon enough.
Chandus,
They might have been able to slow Felix down, but its kind of hard to tell when you don’t give the guy a chance.
I agree with you totally on Pat. The #2 WR for this team needs to step up. Alvin Harper wasn’t a great WR but he was somene that would make you pay for paying too much attention to Irvin.
Defenses can’t doubleteam everyone, which means that sometimes as the #2 WR you need to get seperation. If Dallas has to trade for a #2 wideout then so be it.
Ed Werder said that he has no doubt that if Roy Williams is available for a decent price he’ll become a Cowboy before the deadline. He said Jerry loves Williams.
And what the hell happened on the last thread? I keep on missing these heated debates. Hurry, someone make a derogatory comment about Obama/McCain
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Jets-locker-room-is-87-stinkier-since-Brett-Fav?urn=nfl,113469
Your Obama is so fat…
Like Ed is saying anything earth shaking.
I’m not opposed to getting Williams, though I wrote about not getting either him or Boldin. My reasoning is simple.
Point one: Get then if they come for a #1 *at most*. Nothing more. Not another pick, not a pick and a player.
Point two: they would need a contract more in line with Terry Glenn’s than T.O.’s.
I’m thinking point two is actually the harder part to work out than part one, though the Lions’ price may have gone down since Matt Millen left.
Gee, Dallas only tried very, very hard to get Williams before the draft. Ed Werder, master of the obvious. That’s why they’re “the worldwide leader” and getting into fights with the local press.
Rafael:
Yeah an it’s impressive and telling that what Millen wanted in return for Williams was nothing else but a 1st Round pick and Demarcus Ware…
That made me wonder: “I know that Matt Millen isn’t still in charge because of his team record and because how he evaluates talent… Now I know that he isn’t still up there because he’s a good negotiator… Why is he in there?”
And now he isn’t. I wouldn’t be willing to trust a Ford patriarch led team…
On Newman’s injury. I’m not a doctor, but I do have a lot of experience with unusual diagnoses.
It is entirely possible that the doctors DONT know whats causing the pain. And MRIs are hardly the beautiful, clear, crisp picture we make them out to be. They are very inexact and often don’t reveal much of anything. It really depends on the type of tissue thats damaged and how much inflamation its causing.
Add in the fact that the injury location may be different from the pain location (more common than you might think), and it would not surprise me to hear that they don’t know what his problem is.
A 1st round pick and Demarcus Ware?? Really? That’s hilarious.
“Newman was trying to cover one of the game’s fastest wideouts”
Come on, Tnew got schooled by a double move. Fortunately the ball was under thrown and he recovered to save a TD - it happens.
No arguments there, Birdness. But that was one play. Moss had eight receptions for 145, and they weren’t all on double moves. No way do I believe Newman was healthy enough to play competitively, because a healthy Newman has the speed to stay on Moss’s hip better than that.
he got schooled on that double move twice he was not right as is evidenced by the recent reports. He’s out and we will have to make due with A.Jones,Henry and the rookies. We will be better for this injury.
Well, the DMN blog idiots are at it again. Romo isn’t vocal enough to be a leader. They won’t win unless Romo or someone on the offense starts yelling at everyone between series. Doomed without leadership.
Um, what happened to Eli and the Giants when the vocal ‘leader’ left the team last year?
I know they have stupid arguements and ‘points’ every day, but come on. Really? The no Romo yelling = no Romo winning crap again?
