Blog Merger

Posted: November 11, 2008 @ 9:38 am

The AFL and NFL merged in 1966, ending the rancor and player stashing that existed between the leagues and ushering the Super Bowl era.

I can’t say if I’m going to play Tex Schramm or Lamar Hunt in this scenario, or even that you’re about to get the Super Bowl of Cowboys blogs, but  I can report that a blog merger has been in the works for some time and this Friday, Raul and I will join forces with Dave Halprin at Blogging the Boys.com.

The merger will bring together the two biggest, longest-standing Cowboys blogs and offer readers the biggest and best Cowboys blogging experience.

We’ll keep posting here through Friday but starting Saturday, you’ll find Raul and me and our story archive at http://www.bloggingtheboys.com.

You will have to re-register but I’m assuming many of you are already readers of both sites.

If you’re not, make the move with us and join the fun.

    Hope the merger works well.

I have come to depend on this space for my “insider” knowledge.

I am still amazed this has been up since the mid 90s.

Good work to date, I will go check out bTB.com

Whoa, I have been a registered member to both of your sites and will be interested in how this plays out. Your two sites are not the same in how you cover the team but the support is about the same; this should be interesting and hopefully a good move. If you do not mind me asking raf, what brought about this merger?

Rafael Vela on November 11th, 2008 10:17 am

    cowboy78,

    Several things.

one, the sports net business is undergoing rapid consolidation. Newspapers are slowly dying and a lot of sports writers are getting pink slipped. The pickings in the sports field are going to be radically different in a year than they are now. Notice the huge changes in personnel and staffing at places like espn.com the last few months? That’s why.

There’s also a lot of venture capital flowing into sports blog networks. BleacherReport recently got a $3.5M line of credit. SBNation, where we’re headed, got $7M in venture capital.

This is typical of new media growth. Initially you have lots of new players, then at some early point the big money comes in and the field shakes out. As Nate Silver of 538.com said last week, talking about the political polling site explosion, the field can probably only handle about four or five sites. The key is making sure you’re with one of those four.

It’s about stability, and wanting to be one one of those four or so sports blog boats.

I wish you all the best over there. I like Halprin’s writing but am not the biggest fan of the rest of the blog. I don’t post much over there. Hope it works out.

A couple threads back you mentioned B.J. Raji from Boston College. I watched part of the game against Notre Dame just to eyeball him. He looked really active. He’d be a great addition.

I assume Raf you were just talking about seniors?? I recorded the Alabama game so I could watch Cody the big NT. He’d gotten a lot of press earlier in the year but I was underwhelmed. Didn’t seem to get off his blocks very well. In fact, he was getting blocked a lot of the time by just one guy. I’ll keep watching ’cause he’s played a lot better before his injury.

  10. 10
Rafael Vela on November 11th, 2008 11:56 am

    kam,

I’m looking at seniors only right now.

And I figure if there really was a big time NT who came out early, it’s because he’s rated as a 1st or very early 2nd rounder, so he would be beyond Dallas.

    Whatever became of Posner?

  13. 13
    kameleon_o on November 11th, 2008 12:12 pm

Good point Raf. We’ve got to start projecting who’s going to be available to us at the middle/end of the 2nd round. Scout’s Inc. has Raji ranked as their #4 DT and NFLDraftCountdown has him as their #2 senior right now. If he keeps playing well even Raji might not fall to the 2nd.

NFLDraftCountdown only has 3 CB’s projected to go in the 1st round right now. We know that’s probably not going to happen. Once all these juniors declare I’ll bet guys like Raji fall.

I’m also looking at safeties right now. I was watching the Alabama game to get a look at Cody but the guy I noticed the most was FS Rashad Johnson. Looked active and had 2 picks. Would like to get a true FS and move Hamlin to SS where I think he would be a better player.

    Raf, Congrats on the merge!

I signed up, haven’t read any posts yet, but I’m looking forward to having my horizons expanded by increasing the Cowboys info input!

Do you, or they have any tips for site navigation? ie, leaving comments, etc?

    Thanks

  15. 15
    cowboy78 on November 11th, 2008 12:38 pm

Jim, the site provides the member the ability to post their own take on things in regards to the boys. You can attach pictures, polls, etc to your post and discuss with other members. If you use an article from another site you need to provide a link and do not copy the entire article just the main points. Also no profanity or personal attacks, if you must insert a cuss then use the handy $%#$* as a censor. I may have missed a few things but those are the main points.

    StillHateTheGiants on November 11th, 2008 12:42 pm

Congrats on the merger and your new partner should say a huge thanks for getting the biggest/best early Christmas present anyone could hope for. There’s not a better writer about the Cowboys than Raf.

We’ve had our childish moments here (myself included) but I really hope the crowd over there doesn’t change the dialogue we have here. This is the only blog I’ve ever looked at regularly that is 99 civil and people generally post from informed opinions. Frankly, that part makes me nervous. Other than that, I’m all in.

  17. 17
    cowboy78 on November 11th, 2008 12:44 pm

One of the things that I like about the site is that if you are logged in you can see if any new comments have been made and it gives you an indicator to let you know where the new comments are.

  18. 18
    cowboy78 on November 11th, 2008 12:50 pm

Stillhate, having been to both sites, I do not see much difference in either site as far as how the comments go. The BTB site is not the DMN blog, it has its share of doom & gloom, optimists & homers, and people in between. Grizz has done a good job of keeping from getting out of hand.

  19. 19
    cly on November 11th, 2008 1:15 pm

I do read both sites and I think this might be a case where the new site will equal the sum of the two parts. There seems to be more frequent new articles on BTB, some of which are worth reading - what they are missing is the depth of analysis that Rafael provides.

Any chance Raul will write articles? I was surprised he doesn’t here. I originally found theboysblog via e-mail posts on the Dallas Cowboys mailing list that Danny Smith administers. I always looked forward to posts from both Raul and Rafael on that list.

Congrats Raf and Raul, I’m sure the merger will be a successful one for both of you. I’ve been a reader of the other blog and find it an excellent repository of the news stories on the Boys. And the Wade press conference summaries are great. I have never posted there, however, as I find the discussion here the best around. Hopefully, that aspect will carry over there.

Check out the current poll in nfl.com. It’s asking which QB will finish with the most TDs. Romo currently has 14, and he hasn’t played three games. Brees has the most (21).
Are the posters there as good as the posters here?

  25. 25
    joey2zs on November 11th, 2008 4:53 pm

CLY, I think you mean greater than the sum of two parts (1+1=3, for example). The equal of the sum of two parts (1+1=2), means that two parts come together and you get nothing extra.
Greater than the sum of two parts = synergy.

  26. 26
    bbanzai on November 11th, 2008 4:54 pm

when you said, “two biggest, longest-standing Cowboys blogs”

you should have said “”two biggest, longest-standing, and _best_ Cowboys blogs”

This is a great move, for everyone, but mostly the readers. They have been the best at regular updates and latest news, presser summaries, etc. you’ve alway been the best at analysis. It’s like putting together the best play-by-play man with the best color guy.

I also like their page layout a bit better, particularly the more robust comments & fanpost features.

    It’s really a win-win.

Wow, did I really just say “win-win”, sigh… Oh well, good luck discovering your synergies while developing a new pardig’em.

  27. 27
    cly on November 11th, 2008 5:09 pm

    Joey2zs,

No, I stated it the way I meant. There is a potential that the combined blog could be less than the sum of the parts based on publishing less useful information and analysis (e.g., Raf kills an article he is writing because Grizz is writing something similar). In this case, we pretty much get 1+1=2, because there isn’t much overlap in style between the two sets of sources.

  28. 28
    joey2zs on November 11th, 2008 5:23 pm

Good grief, I used to live 2 blocks from the HQ of sports blog nation in Old Town Alexandria. And, I do for a network of travel web sites what i’d prefer to do for a network of sports sites. But, we just got $15mm in funding, so, there… bleah!

Frankly, I prefer this community, but, I’ll roll with the flow. I hope you got some equity, Raf, if that thing goes public or gets bought out, which I’m sure it will. The internet has not nearly shaken out yet, and it’s not close to being clear who the winners will be (I mean, except for Google, of course).

  29. 29
    joey2zs on November 11th, 2008 5:40 pm

Ha! Scratch that comment about you getting equity in that company…
“SB Nation is a sports startup that was started by Jim Bankoff, former AOL EVP of Consumer and Publisher Services. Bankoff is also a Senior Advisor with Providence Equity Partners. Bankoff was one of the AOL execs that pushed for the development of TMZ.com.

Although it is not known exactly how much SB Nation has raised, TechCrunch pegs it at around the “mid-seven-figure sum.” The funding was provided by Accel, Allen & Co., and several other angel investors. The other angel investors include Ted Leonsis (former AOL Vice Chairman and Washington Capitals owner), Brent Jones (former San Francisco 49ers player and MD of Northgate Capital), Dan Rosenweig, Jeff Weiner, and other executives from Providence Equity Partners.

SB Nation is short for SportsBlogs Nation. About 150 team sites are linked together by local writers within the SB Nation network. All of these bloggers share in advertising revenue. SB Nation sites combined receive about 2 million unique visitors per month.”

Um… those dudes don’t negotiate silly deals. All the upside will land in their pockets, I’m sure.
Interesting, the 2 million uniques a month is just wrong, and I don’t get the $7mm investment. $7mm is a ton of operating capital for an outfit like SB Nation. It’s probably more than the company will gross for the next 3 years, especially given the soft economy.
Also, what’s interesting is that SB Nation doesn’t even have an ad sales force. It’s outsourced to Federated Media, which means that SB Nation only earns probably $0.50 on every dollar of advertising earned.

Good move for Raf, and for those of us who mostly just show up to read Raf’s stuff and occasionally include a smartass comment or two.

But some of you regular posters here are about to become small fish in a big pond. Yep, this is how the legend of Tex finally goes, not with a bang but a whimper. This little online community and it’s big personalities/mouths (Donny Posner, rha, joey2zs…) won’t last over there where the plethora of articles/fanposts/fanshots make carrying on a real dialogue rather unlikely.

So I guess this is goodbye. Some of you I’ll actually miss hearing from (casual, cash, slide, squid, Tim Wilson) and arguing with. It was fun while it lasted, see you at the Super Bowl. (or at least that perpetual dream that lives on regardless of any connection to reality…)

Not good for Tex or his handle.

That kid on the other site is the Brian Stewart of bloggers - way too green and inexperienced to be of any value. The once anonymous and now public host is annoying, too cocky, and inarticulate… much like the beleaguered BStew. The Cowboys should have pushed Stewart aside for Dom Capers, and Tex feels the same way about this partnership - its backwards, upside-down, and just plain wrong. Regurgitation of news is not why Tex made the jump to BSR from the well-branded Boys Blog.

Fire Brian Stewart, kick Dave Halprin to the curb, and please put a fork in Brad Johnson.

as a matter of fact..this sparked an idea - maybe our Boys could try this “merger” thing on for size - specifically i’m thinking maybe we could merge with the Baltimore Ravens and get that defense that we’ve been trying to build for the last umpteen years or so…with our O and their D we’d be in pretty good shape I’d say…the Dallas Cowbirds would truly then be a force to be reckoned with

    Change is almost always uncomfortable.

I have really appreciated the effort Rafael and Raul have put into blogging when it was only a hobby and a dream for a long time. I have put about 20 minutes of thought into this transition and I am sure they have spent hundreds of hours considering their options. If this change gives them a better chance to reach their goals then I am all for it.

I really like the features at the new site. They give multiple ways to spin off side discussions without missing the point of the original story as often happens here.

I too worry that the dialog level is a lot lower at the new site. As Rafael’s survey pointed out this site had an unusual demographic for a sports blog. It had a high average income and a high education level. It also had a low tolerance for dribble. I have decided that I am going to give the new site a real shot and try and contribute. If the dialog is good, then we can continue all the fun there. If it proves to be frustrating then I will always remain a reader of Rafael’s work.

PS. Tex, You can always take on the name Tex, instead of Tex. I found that my handle Trey is taken by a Boston Celtic fan, so I just added a comma to my name. If you keep your star we will know who you are. Heck just keep bashing B Stewart and we will know which Tex is the Montecito mogul.

  52. 52
    Tex on November 12th, 2008 6:09 pm

Quite a coup for the beleaguered Dave Halprin to get such in-depth content. The kid is, and always will be, an imitator without substance. Halprin should serve his “Joon the Intern” duties before being promoted to editor of a long URL. Tough to swallow - much like Dave Campo, who’s forgotten more about NFL defense than BStew would attest to know, taking order’s from the unqualified Defensive Coordinator. And during Redskin week none-the-less… troubling for Tex.

  53. 53
    Trey on November 12th, 2008 6:19 pm

I meant your hat, not star.

Anyway, just add something disparaging about BStew to your tagline on the new site that way you can repeat the same mantra over and over without having to retype it. Technology is grand; it can automate the process of you repeating yourself.

    His keyboard’s now covered
    His mouse has been bronzed
    His monitor’s weeping
    But his modem’s not on.

And somewhere a cougar, lies crying in dread
“I knew Tex was crazy, but I’ll miss his big head”
The talk of his riches, the notes on his fame
The constant reminders of successes he claimed

    The forthright downgrading
    Of Stewart and Tony
The way that he cheesed off…
    AFB, Slide and Donny

    He rankled those easy
    To frustrate with words
    He chewed them up weekly
    Like cows with their curds

    How homers did howl
    When Tex won the day
    He’d seen the wreck coming
    Tex knew from the Nard
    Wade coached at Camp Cupcake
When they should have hit hard

    Tex was right about Stewart
    but wrong about Drew
    His hat’s off for Landry
    And for Jimmy too
    Parcells he called Doubtfire
    And doubtless Tex knew

Tex doubted the Tuna was in Dallas to stay
And gloated no end when Bill slithered away
    Good riddance said Tex
Take “your guys” and their toys
Tex never did trust that lot with his Boys

Of Romo Tex said that the man could play well
‘Till the playoffs were here when his jitters would tell
It brought back the memories of D. White post-Roger
When the Cowboys were always bridesmaids at the alter

Still Romo might win one, Tex thought by and by
If he’d focus on football, not play the “wise guy”
That jury’s still out but I suspect that Tex knew
Romo was just a tad better than Drew

    B. Johnson was cooked, or so Tex did say
And again he looked like a savant on that day
When Johnson threw footballs without any pop
They’d head down the field 10 yards and then stop

Old Tex, he had warned you,
    If you’d listened to him
    But you were too proud…
Till Tex wiped off your grin.

    He proved he was right
    And blog experts were wrong
    He knew that this team
was half weak and half strong
    That defense was suspect
    And special teams too
    That Wade and B. Stewart
    had nary a clue

    A secret some missed
    as they ranted at Tex
    He played them like banjos
    He mowed them like weeds
    He gave them the rope
But they climbed their own trees

    Tex haters went wild
    when he merely suggested
    That this team’s lungs
    are, ughm, slightly congested

    So spare a last thought
for the Man known as Tex
    An American original…

    Oklahoma,

Well done mate, thanks, a fitting end to the last thread of the BlueAndSilverReport.

One wonders if the same conversations, characters and personalities, some of which were developed and debated over years, will be lost in the merger. I’m still deciding whether I’ll go over or not, things are going to start getting busier for me soon and now might be a good time to cut back on some recreational activities that chew too much time, being a blog regular falls into that category. I will probably go over and give it a go but don’t know how long I’ll last. I’m a bit disappointed ‘we’, as in Raf, Raul and all us many regulars (but crucially not too many) don’t have ‘our own’ blog anymore. I know it’s not our blog, it’s Raf’s and Raul’s, but I felt like it was a friends house rather than a sports news room, Raf and Raul get all the credit for creating that environment by talking to us and not at us, and for setting up an environment that had high standards but also accepted wide variety and exercised patience in dealing with the occasional debates that delved far beyond sports and even became heated often letting us resolve it ourselves without resorting to extreme measures like banning people. It never felt like I was visiting a soulless corporate entity like a lot of other sports sites (the DMN Blog for example) but rather a friends site. While we all started reading here for Raf’s articles the reason for me (and probably many others) to keep coming back was the conversations and the personalities, here’s hoping it carries over, and if it doesn’t it was fun while it lasted. So cheers to everybody from TheBoysBlog and BlueAndSilverReport who I’ve celebrated, commiserated, argued and laughed with.

I definitely have to echo the comments/concerns with the new site, in the sense of this was a pretty small community, and you could carry on conversations for a long time (too long?!) if you wanted to.

Over there, there are so many posts, and there’s not a chance to get a real discussion going, at least from what I’ve seen so far.
Some of us could bring that over, but for me, I’m west coast and was always chiming in late, so it’d be difficult.

I will miss this site and this community.

I’ll probably migrate over, but I don’t think I will have the same interest in the comments. A very good level of discussion here, with good humour, and remarkably few hissyfits.

    Oklahoma- Very clever, very creative.

I like the new site, and I hope all of you guys migrate over there too. It’s a little different, yes, but then Blue and Silver Report was a bit different than the Boys Blog.

The way I see it is, you still have Raf and Raul, there should still be the same interesting posters (assuming you all migrate over) and there will be more articles to read and new knuckleheads to get to know and comment with.

The party just got bigger, and fortunately, everyone there is a Cowboys fan.

So, like the Colonel said to Private Joker, in Full Metal Jacket - “Then how about getting with the program? Why don’t you jump on the team and come on in for the big win?”

    Luke. on November 13th, 2008 3:15 am

    Jim,

Yeah but Gunnery Sergeant Hartman was also killed by one of his recruits who didn’t want to “get with the program” and “come on in for the win”. Let’s hope nothing like that happens…

Haha, someone stole Tex’s name. If Tex really had all that money wouldn’t he just buy it back???

Thanks for all the work guys. I haven’t checked the other site out before so I will go register now.

Adapt and overcome or die. Change is inevitable. Good luck.

    Luke, Post 57…

I concur with your assessment. This place (Blog) is like going home.. as oppose to your neighbors house… Don’t get me wrong, Grizz is cool but it is not Raf or Raul…! and what made it so special are all you fellows.. which felt like a kinship among us all. We’ll see.

    Raf, Raul,
Hope you kept all our emails just in case you decide to… you know…!

I have just been overcome by sadness, while reading all your posts. This place, and the old BoysBlog, was indeed just like home. Although I did sign up, I don’t really know much about the new site.

I’ll have to get familiar with it, and I will look for all of you there. I am still onepaniolo. Thankfully, it wasn’t taken.

I hope to see you all there!

    Luke’s Girl Says:
Hello Everyone! I have been enjoying getting to know you all through Luke and more importantly getting to know the Dallas Cowboys (having been born in MN now living in AUS).
I am uber bummed to hear about the merger, so just in case Luke doesn’t persist with the new site, I wanted to tell you all I have had a great time listening to your debates, hearing your jokes and being filled in on the background of the players.
I especially enjoy Tex’s dry witty humour and Oklahoma’s tributes to it.
    A sad day indeed…..
My favourite players are Marion the Barbarian and the Romo/Owen’s combo.

Here’s hoping they have a huge game against the Redskins!

Madam. May I compliment you in your selection of Luke. You have chosen with care and caution, and your discernment has been repaid with the companionship of an upstanding gentleman and a scholar. Your’s is a highly regarded man who can fight his own corner, yet extends a hand to those he has fairly bested, a respectful thought for foes he has vanquished.

The blog circus has now left town, bustling and boisterous with its bright lights, elaborate sets and glint of gold. It is but a rump stock of old timers left to haunt this blog, for the dwindling minutes we have left. When the last lantern falters the darkness will extinguish the final twilight of a more simple but a satisfying age. Aided by the archive, a few will remember for a season though even less will care. Until the last of us has at last been laid low, un-recollected, and the desolation is completed.

In coming days Luke will need you more than ever. Bear firmly his reliance upon you. In silence look deeper into his eyes and throw an extra portion on his barbie. Your quiet, resolute support will make the difference and see him through all upheaval I am sure. The world changes, progress reaches remotest outback. John Boy grows up and moves to the city and Walton’s Mountain is forever altered by the script for a new era.

Take care of yourself ma’am. Keep an eye out for the awful spectre of Huntsman Spiders and the rogue and salty crocs ever spying ever smiling at river’s edge. And never let it be said that the dour element in the noble Minnesotan heritage - forged in the ice of winter and fed by the legacy of Bergman and Strindberg - won out over the irrepressible Aussie spirit of the Koala Brothers.

[Oklahoma walks over to the vintage record player and queues up Songs of the West (Norman Luboff Choir, 1955). He carefully sets the needle on Bury Me Not on the Lone Prarie, to be followed by The Red River Valley and Poor Lonesome Cowboy. Oklahoma returns to his rough hewn rocker and sits down...resolute, alone and contented.]

    Luke’s Girl:
Mr. Oklahoma, I am very touched by your words of welcome and will endeavor to be the calming influence on Luke in the coming days. Your compliments/observations of his character were surprisingly accurate and I often wake up and marvel at my choice :)

Luke was also flattered by your post, and we both enjoy your poetic narratives. Will we see you on the new blog? We had a look earlier today and Tex has sent them into a spin with only two comments! It was hilarious :D

Still, Luke wonders if that place will be as conducive to creating the characters and in depth conversions we enjoyed here.

Anyway look like this will be the end of our blog and thus our conversation :’( If we do not see you over there, we wish you all the best and luck in your future.

P.s. When Luke’s megabytes come back we look forward to downloading the songs and having a listen.

    Take care Oklahoma,
    Oli and Luke.

  86. 86
    Tighthead on January 2nd, 2009 1:42 pm

That Terry guy ruins the new site. There can be no reasoned discussion of Romo without his fanboy comments and +1/-1 barrage. If Romo is mentioned, he is there with his advocacy immediately.

We had a much tidier group over here.

  87. 87
    Tighthead on December 14th, 2009 6:54 pm

I understand it was business, but the merger was a terrible move. A number of very good posters didn’t make the jump, and the established group there is really lacking and often juvenile.

I hope that it was the right $$$ move at least. You guys were first class here and I wish you the best.

Got something to say?
